The city can also be reached by train, which comes from Munich and Vienna.

From the capital of Austria, the train takes about 4 hours and a train ticket will cost 50 euros. How to get there

For an independent traveler, there is no more important and at the same time interesting activity than planning a route. I admit, I really love this stage. So, it turned out that you can arrive from Moscow to Klagenfurt in the following ways:

Of course, there is also a bus service. The bus stop is located directly 40 - 50 meters from the main exit of the airport terminal. The bus fare is 2 EUR, which can be paid directly to the driver upon boarding, payment bank cards also available. If you take a taxi at a special terminal stand, the cost will be about 12 - 14 EUR.

By train

Personally, I chose this method. And here's why: I made the decision to go to Klagenfurt quite spontaneously and was getting ready under slight time pressure. Accordingly, I was unable to buy cheap plane tickets, and the current price to Alpe Adria did not make me happy at all. Moreover, it is Railway will allow you to quickly cross almost the whole of Austria and at the same time make a quick inspection of it. As a result, I created a combined route of plane and train, which allowed me to significantly reduce my travel budget. Below I will analyze it in a little more detail.

It was there that I stocked up on groceries and, of course, did not miss breakfast at the hotel - fortunately they fed me like slaughter. Below is a list of products with prices for reference. Beaches. Which ones are better

First of all, it should be noted that this is a city beach. You can easily get to it, for example, by bicycle. The distance from the city center is very small (about two kilometers). It is located just outside the territory of the Europapark. There is an entrance fee to the beach, and the area is fenced and guarded. The fee seemed quite reasonable to me - about 12 EUR per adult. So you won’t find any drunks, beggars or homeless people here. What captivated me about Strandbad beach was its infrastructure.

There is really everything you need on site. And even more. For example, in addition to the traditional beach infrastructure - changing rooms, beach showers, equipped diving boards, sun loungers, sun umbrellas, etc., there are several charming beach cafes, which in class and service are more reminiscent of restaurants. Possibility to order a professional massage therapist and children's inflatable water playgrounds in a specially equipped lounger. Everything is done very beautifully and stylishly. I will also note the presence of several diving boards. Real cool springboards 1 meter, 3 meters and 5 meters high, with a throwing board. Local youth perform impressive somersaults into the water from them in a way that will take your breath away. It seems that the Klagenfurt sports school eats its bread for good reason. For those who like to “turn into a seal” there is also complete order - there is both a sand strip for sunbathing and several piers jutting into the lake, covered with polished wood.

All services are provided by local, uniformed Austrian staff who are fluent in English. Everything is super civilized and, it should be noted, not at all expensive. There are a lot of locations around the beach that will attract your attention, so Strandbad beach can without any stretch be called the center summer holiday in Carinthia. Personally, I really liked it. Here you can spend the whole day with the whole family from morning until evening. And believe me, it won’t be boring, everyone will be able to have a good rest.

Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?

Of course, Catholic places of worship predominate in Klagenfurt. They are the ones that tourists like more than others. The reason for this, of course, is their Gothic architecture and rich interior decoration. Most are located in the city center. I will recommend to compulsory visit the most important and significant of them.

Dom zu klagenfurt- Klagenfurt Catholic Cathedral of Saints and Paul, this is a classic of Catholicism. A building with history and an active cathedral at the same time. It was built in the Romanesque style and, of course, is not striking in appearance. Don't expect too much from it - after all, we are talking about the most Austrian province. And it is far from the luxurious giants of the capital. However, the inside is nice and I thought it was quite atmospheric.

Museums. Which ones are worth visiting?

Do you want to waste your time aimlessly and completely uninterestingly? If yes, then you should visit the museums of Klagenfurt. Lord knows - the bathroom of the Hermitage has much greater artistic and historical value than all the museums in Klagenfurt. Taken together, and by the way there are about ten of them. I will highlight the most visited one in a little more detail.

What to see in 1 day

• 10:00 - Neuer Platz square. Located in the city center, it will be an excellent springboard for exploring many of the sights of the old city. This is where the beautiful municipality assignment is located. We can immediately rent a bicycle from the city parking lot.
• 10:30 - Lindwurm fountain. The most important place for memorable selfies, etc. We take a couple of photos and walk around the square. Then we move along Wiesbadenerstrasse to Landhaus Park.
• 12:00 - Princely stone. Just outside Landhaus Park there is a piece of marble column called the Prince's Stone. Entire generations of local rulers were married to the duchy there. Then we move north along Tabakgasse to the Catholic Church.
• 12:30 - Catholic Church Church of St. Egid. The building is notable for its high bell tower and interior decoration. Next we move south along Bahnhoffstrasse to Dom Platz.
• 13:00 - Catholic cathedral saints and Paul. The cathedral is quite large and interesting, in addition, there is church museum Diözesanmuseum. You need to devote about an hour to the whole complex. Here you can return your previously borrowed city bike. We go to the nearby Paulitschgasse bus stop.
• 14:00 - Stift Viktring Abbey. At the stop we take bus number 5316 and go to the Viktring Siebenbürgengasse stop. From here it is a stone's throw to the abbey; the complex of buildings itself is quite large. The place is interesting, there is a lot to take a walk. Allow at least an hour for inspection.
• 15:00 - theme park Minimundus. From the abbey to the park, 4.5 km away, you can easily bike or take a taxi. The miniature park will be quite interesting; it will take at least an hour to explore.
• 16:00 - Europapark. It's right within walking distance. Nice park for easy walks.
• 16:30 - Strandbad beach. It is described in detail in the “Beaches” section. Perfect place.

What to see in the area

One of the main attractions of Klagenfurt is considered to be the Hochosterwitz Castle (Burg Hochosterwitz) and deservedly so. It is located approximately 30 kilometers from the center of Klagenfurt. And it is considered the pearl of medieval fortification architecture. If you decide to go to Hochosterwitz, I strongly recommend that you do not worry too much about the road. Don't rush, just take a taxi. On almost free, beautiful roads you will get there quickly and comfortably. The costs will be approximately 20 - 25 EUR, and most importantly, you will not waste a lot of time.

The castle itself is located on a tall rock approximately 150 - 200 meters high. It is in excellent condition - I did not notice any serious signs of damage. During its entire career as a fortification, it was never taken by storm and remained impregnable even in the era of firearms. This is, of course, impressive and is due to the unique location and layout of the fortifications. There are tours inside the castle in German and English languages, many authentic, interesting things related to the life and weapons of past centuries. By and large, this is a full-fledged museum located on the territory of the castle. There is a fee for visiting - there is a certain gradation depending on the size of your group, age, etc. I paid 7 EUR for entry as a regular single visitor. Of course, I advise you to go on foot from the very first gate of the castle, since this is the method that will give you the opportunity to enjoy the art of the architects and fortifiers who created this masterpiece. Take a closer look, take your time, because the numerous traps and defensive devices are worth it. You can also get to the territory using the local funicular, which can easily be called a separate attraction.

Initially, it was intended for disabled people or elderly people who find it difficult to climb up on foot. But the funicular is, of course, a joke. A steel guide on which something like an elevator cabin for a couple of people is installed. After you get into it and it starts moving, it will let you fully feel what “light betrayal” is. If you want to tickle your nerves a little, load up on this thing. The cost of the pleasure is 5 EUR.

Food. What to try

When people talk about Austrian cuisine, they most often mean Wiener schnitzels and meat, coffee and desserts. In this regard, Klagenfurt is a little different. Quite a decent number of cafes and eateries in the city are focused on Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. You can also find a Chinese eatery and a Middle Eastern joint with its inevitable kebabs. The price range is very different - from quite budget to very expensive. But in general, Austria is quite high prices specifically in restaurants, but cafes are quite accessible to mere mortals.

As I said a little earlier, Lake Wörthersee is simply inimitable. And the restaurant, located on a small peninsula, immediately attracts attention. And for good reason. From the second floor terrace, where guests are received, there is an excellent view of the water surface and the mighty snow-capped mountains standing somewhere in the distance. The establishment's staff speaks multiple languages. And the menu will delight you with dishes atypical for Austria. For example, freshly caught trout! Which is caught in the clearest waters of the lake. Stuffed with aromatic herbs and grilled, I was very pleased with it. My compliments to the chef! And despite the fact that this is an expensive establishment. The bill for a full meal of trout, fresh avocado salad and local beer cost me about 60 EUR. In a good way, it is better to book a table in advance, since the restaurant is popular and the hall is almost never empty.

In Klagenfurt it is quite difficult to notice any presence of crime or potential danger. All local residents friendly and quite sociable. The atmosphere in the city gives a complete feeling of calm. But still, there is a fair fly in the ointment in this barrel of honey. In Austria, by European standards, alcohol is quite cheap, and, accordingly, drunks are available. In addition, one day, right in the city center, I came across a group of the most natural drug addicts. Who, shaking and groaning, occupied a couple of benches and tried to “improve their health” with the help of packages of cheap beer. This group included people of both sexes and very different ages. Everyone had a very serious history of drug use. And judging by their appearance, many do not have much time left. So, there was no desire to stay close to them. I hastened to set sail in the other direction. I will give the simplest advice. But they are effective, and that's the main thing.

• Don't leave things unattended. You should not put your bag on the bench and go take a selfie at the monument, because they will easily “attach legs” to the bag.
• You should not take large sums of money with you. Card payments are available almost everywhere.

Two such points are enough - nevertheless, in Klagenfurt there is practically no street crime, even by Austrian standards.

It is in the summer that two events take place in Klagenfurt that every self-respecting sports fan should know about. More specifically, these are: the Klagenfurt Major beach volleyball world tour stage and the Iron Man triathlon stage. Both competitions are wildly popular, and even if you are far from sports, still go to beach volleyball, for example. Here are a couple of reasons.

In addition to watching beautiful girls running on the white sand, do not forget that the Klagenfurt Major is a competition between the best volleyball pairs in the world. The level of wrestling is very high, competitions take place from July 22 to July 31. Matches take place almost every day from morning until evening. Well, all the entertainment attributes of beach volleyball are available - dancing, cheerleading, music!

Well, of course, the stunning endurance competition - Iron Man Karntern. Triathlon is already a thing only for enthusiasts, of whom there are quite a few year after year. Several thousand of these “crazy people” come to Klagenfurt every year, ready to participate in this incredible endurance test. When they all rush into the water at once, it's impressive. But even more impressive is the finish of these athletes. A few hours later, the athletes, absolutely exhausted, run to the finish line, many of them simply wandering - as if drunk. Some fall, lose consciousness from fatigue, and those who managed to finish are gushing with a whole storm of emotions and absolute happiness. In addition, they are all simple people, absolutely open to communication. You can easily join their crowd, chat and recharge with incredible positivity.

Clubs and nightlife

As evening falls, the coastline of Wörthersee is not deserted. The fact is that not far from the main beach there is a floating stage. Sort of “open air” night club. The design is original, in the style of resort towns (such as, for example). This concert venue can be adapted to almost anything. And all summer long, rock concerts, DJ performances, music festivals and even foam dance parties.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

I was not able to buy any souvenir with local flavor and bright charisma. I don’t know for what reasons, but most souvenirs are typical for any city. In the end, I bought a refrigerator magnet with a picture of the Lindwurm fountain and calmed down. Stupid T-shirts with inscriptions about the absence of kangaroos - ignored.

How to get around the city

There are many European cities that use bicycles for transport. But in none of them did I use the bike with such pleasure as here. I consider this type of transport to be the best for summer in Klagenfurt and the surrounding area. The city itself is not large in size, even taking into account the residential areas and suburbs. There are many bike paths everywhere highest quality- laid separately from automobile, scenic and green roads. The cyclist has priority, city residents and all road users know this. The driving culture in Klagenfurt is excellent. There are a great variety of bike rentals in the city. I didn't pick up the bike at my hotel, but walked around the city and asked around about prices. As a result, I saved a lot of money; I got a slightly “tired” bike for 21 EUR per week. They let me check the condition on the spot, gave me a receipt, and there was also a decent selection of models.

And, of course, buses. This type of transport is the main one in Klagenfurt. The fare is 2 EUR, but there are a couple of tricks that can help save a pretty penny. For example, purchasing a subscription or an hourly ticket. Personally, I always took a ticket from the driver when boarding, the savings are not that great.

As for taxis, in Klagenfurt within the city the need for this type of transport is almost zero, and a trip to the airport will cost about 12 EUR.

The capital of Carinthia, the city of Klagenfurt (Klagenfurt, full name Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Klagenfurt am Wörthersee) lies among the low hills of the south, at the eastern end of Lake Wörthersee (Wörthersee). Founded in the 12th century by the aristocratic family of von Spanheim, Klagenfurt began to grow rapidly following the decrees of Emperor Maximilian I, who in 1518 undertook a major reconstruction of the old part of the city to transform it into a provincial capital. The Italian architect Domenico del'Allio (participated in the construction of the Landhaus in Graz) planned new network streets according to a clear plan, clearly visible even now. The Jesuits turned the city into the spiritual capital of Carinthia by the 17th century, and in 1787 Count von Salm, Bishop of Gurk, moved the diocese here. Like many other Austrian cities, Klagenfurt lost its imposing walls in 1809 under the orders of the victorious Napoleon (their outline can still be traced in the form of a quadrangular ring road) and suffered greatly during the Second World War. But carefully restored, it is still considered one of the most attractive cities in the region.

Attractions

The center of Klagenfurt is quite easy to explore on foot. Its wide streets form a spacious grid around a central Neuer Platz square with the symbol of the city - a sculptural fountain Lindwurm-Brunnen in the form of a mythical animal (16th century, interestingly, its prototype is the skull of a prehistoric rhinoceros, excavated in the vicinity of the city and now kept in the Landmuseum), as well as sculptures of Empress Maria Theresa and some local hero similar to the ancient Hercules.

The Kramergasse starting from here leads north to Alter Platz square- the heart of a vast shopping area where most of the historical buildings cities. The oldest building here is a squat medieval structure Haus zur goldenes Gans at the western end of Alter Platz, whose sloping buttresses were built to withstand the earthquakes that once plagued the area very frequently.
