Basic rules for carrying baggage on an airplane. New rules for transporting hand luggage and baggage on an airplane in Russia and abroad: general and specific carriage rules for various airlines Airport baggage carriage

What can you take on a plane?

The aircraft has a certain carrying capacity, so baggage weight limits are limited. Norms hand luggage They are also installed in order to freely place things on luggage racks or under the seat. Otherwise, things may interfere with the evacuation of passengers.

Hand luggage is checked in simultaneously with the passenger's check-in for the flight. Check-in at any airport usually begins 2-3 hours before departure and ends 1 hour to 40 minutes before departure. You can find out for sure when check-in for your flight begins and ends at the representative office of the airline from which you purchased your ticket. To plan your trip more accurately, check out how to get to your departure airport on.

Hand luggage- these are things that you can take with you into the cabin. The weight limit for hand luggage is determined by the airline. The weight limit for hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg. Hand luggage may not be included in the ticket fare - it may be charged.

Regardless of whether hand luggage is included in the fare or not, on flights of Russian airlines you can take the following items with you into the cabin:

  • handbag or briefcase;
  • bouquet of flowers;
  • outerwear;
  • baby food for the child during the flight;
  • suit in a suitcase;
  • a cradle/folding stroller when transporting a child (use of the stroller is possible up to the aircraft ramp, then the stroller is transferred for transportation in the luggage and cargo compartment);
  • crutches, a folding wheelchair, having dimensions that allow them to be safely placed in the aircraft cabin on a shelf above the passenger seat or under the seat in front of the passenger seat (when transporting a passenger with limited mobility).

Pobeda Airlines allows the carriage of items from this list if their dimensions and hand luggage in total do not exceed the dimensions of 36x30x27 centimeters. If hand luggage exceeds the specified dimensions, it can be checked in as checked baggage for an additional fee.

The bag that you take with you into the aircraft cabin (carry-on luggage) should not contain knives, scissors (even manicure scissors), medicines (except for life-saving necessary medications), inhalers, aerosols, cosmetics (creams, gels).

Baggage allowance

Baggage- these are the things you check in when checking in for your flight. They will fly in the luggage compartment. Airlines have different weight and number of pieces of luggage. Some airlines have fares where baggage is not included in the ticket price and is paid separately as additional service. These data are indicated in the fare rules of the air ticket. Also, when purchasing an air ticket on Tutu.ru, you can install a filter and select either only tickets with allowed luggage, or without luggage.

If the baggage allowance established by the airline is exceeded, for example, baggage weighs 30 kg with a limit of 23 kg, then such baggage is considered excess baggage and you will need to pay extra for it. There are tariffs that limit luggage not only by weight, but also by space - that is, one person can carry one bag or suitcase for free. If your luggage meets the weight limit but is packed in two bags, you will have to pay for an additional piece of luggage.

Payment rules are set by the airline; most often, you can pay for luggage or hand luggage online on the airline’s website or by calling its contact center, as well as at the airport.

Baby on a plane

A baby on an airplane is also a passenger, so some airlines allow you to carry 10 kg of baggage with him free of charge. All baby bassinets or car seats of any size when transporting a child under 2 years of age, as well as strollers when transporting a child under 11 years of age (inclusive) are carried free of charge in addition to the standard baggage allowance or in addition to hand luggage. The folding stroller can be checked in as luggage.

Carriage of sports equipment

If you are flying with sports equipment (skis, snowboard, surfboard, bicycle), then you must inform the airline about this. Check the conditions for transporting sports equipment on your airline's website. Call or write to representatives of the airline you plan to fly with. When booking an air ticket on our website, we can request for you the service of transporting sports equipment (skiing equipment, golf equipment, surfing, diving, paragliding, bicycle).

This service must be ordered more than 72 hours before flight departure:

  • by calling us at 8-495-587-43-05 (be prepared to provide your reservation, order number or phone number specified when placing your order);
  • sending a letter by email [email protected] or a website indicating the reservation number, order number or phone number specified when placing the order.

It is also necessary to indicate the passenger for whom the service is needed, the dimensions length*width*height and the total weight of the equipment.

The airline will need 24 hours to respond. We will definitely inform you about confirmation or refusal of this service.

At the end of September, a law came into force allowing airlines to sell baggage-free, non-refundable tickets. New rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane have been developed as part of the implementation of changes adopted at the end of September.

What changed?

Before the new version of the Federal Aviation Rules (FAR) came into force on November 5, the passenger had the right to free transportation at least 10 kg of luggage for both refundable and non-refundable tickets. The air carrier independently determined how these 10 kg would be transported - in hand luggage or in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

Now passengers can carry at least 5 kg of hand luggage per person free of charge on board the aircraft, and the free baggage allowance, if included in the fare, is set at least 10 kg per person. At the same time, at the request of the carrier, the baggage allowance can be increased.

The amendments also establish three types of fares for air tickets: non-refundable ticket without baggage allowance, non-refundable ticket with baggage and return ticket with baggage weighing from 10 to 30 kg. In this case, the weight of luggage of passengers flying together can be summed up, but the total weight of one piece cannot be more than 30 kg.

The changes also expand the list of items carried in excess of the carry-on baggage allowance. Without charging an additional fee, passengers can still transport handbags, men's briefcases, briefcases, outerwear, baby food and strollers, a bouquet of flowers, crutches, walkers, canes, folding wheelchairs that allow them to be safely placed on a shelf above the seat or under the seat in front of the chair. However, if crutches, canes, walkers, or folding wheelchairs cannot be safely placed on a shelf above or below the seat, according to the new rules, they are checked in as checked baggage without charging an additional fee.

However, umbrellas, printed materials for in-flight reading, telephones, cameras, video cameras and laptop computers have disappeared from the list. All gadgets must be stowed in your hand luggage, briefcase, handbag, backpack or pocket to avoid possible conflicts with airline representatives upon boarding.

According to the new rules, a backpack is included in the list of personal items, so it can be taken on board in addition to hand luggage. However, the weight and dimensions of the backpacks are set by the carrier, which is “related to ensuring the safety of passengers on board.” But the carrier has no right to limit briefcases and handbags in size and weight.

Medicines and goods purchased in stores were also added to the list of personal belongings Duty Free. However, the Ministry of Transport has instructed carriers to determine the norms for carrying packages with purchases from Duty Free stores on board.

"Victory"

Now the standard Pobeda fare includes only the flight itself and hand luggage. Passengers can bring into the cabin at no additional cost any items that do not contradict the FAP and are placed in a calibrator, the dimensions of which are 36x30x27 cm. The exception is crutches, a baby cradle, folding wheelchairs - all this can be brought on board without an additional fee.

“We have decided to move away from restrictions on the number and weight of hand luggage on our flights. Passengers will be able to bring into the cabin at no additional cost anything that does not contradict the FAP and fits in a calibrator, the dimensions of which are 36x30x27 cm. Even if you want to carry a 16-kilogram weight , if it fits in the calibrator, then please,” said the carrier’s general director Andrei Kalmykov recently.

At the same time, from November 15, Pobeda stopped the online sale of paid hand luggage with dimensions of 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions and weighing up to 10 kg. Now it is sold only at the airport at a price of 2,000 rubles and only if there is free space on board.

As for checked baggage, it is now paid at the basic rate. At the time of purchasing a ticket or later, but no later than 4 hours before departure, you can buy 1 piece of baggage up to 10 kg and 203 cm in the sum of three dimensions at a special price of 499 rubles. However, this offer is only valid for one passenger per booking. If there are several passengers in one booking and they also want to carry luggage up to 10 kg, then they will have to pay 1 thousand rubles for it at the airport. per seat (15 euros when departing from other countries). Passengers can also purchase in advance the option to carry luggage weighing up to 20 kg. This service costs RUB 1,499. when purchasing on the website or through a call center and 3 thousand rubles (or 45 euros) at the airport. In this case, the additional payment for each 1 kg of excess weight at the airport will cost 500 rubles.

"Aeroflot"

Hand luggage of Aeroflot passengers flying in economy class can occupy one piece and weigh no more than 10 kg. Its dimensions from the end of February 2018 should not exceed: 55 cm in length, 40 cm in width, 25 cm in height. After the new rules for carrying hand luggage came into force, the airline included a backpack in the list of alternatives to a briefcase or handbag, limiting its size to 80 cm in the sum of three dimensions and weighing 5 kg. At the same time, the briefcase and handbag are not limited in size and weight. Items purchased at duty-free shops at the airport must be packed in one sealed plastic bag with dimensions of no more than 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions. This bag may be taken in addition to hand luggage and other personal items.

In addition, the list of things carried free by Aeroflot includes: a bouquet of flowers, outerwear, baby food for a child during the flight, a suit in a suitcase, a device for carrying a child, medications, special dietary needs in the amount required for the duration of the flight, crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, folding wheelchairs used by a passenger with disabilities and which can be safely placed in the aircraft cabin. A folding wheelchair is carried in the aircraft cabin if there is space for its safe placement, otherwise it is checked in as baggage without charging an additional fee.

When checking in and/or boarding, the passenger, at the request of the carrier, is required to present hand luggage for weighing, as well as a backpack, cradle, or baby stroller when transporting a child. Carry-on baggage that exceeds the free carry-on baggage allowance established by the carrier is checked in by the passenger as baggage in accordance with the terms of the concluded contract. air transportation passenger.

On the website, the airline has not yet regulated the carriage of backpacks and purchases from Duty Free in excess of the carry-on baggage allowance.

"UTair"

The airline published on November 20 changes to the rules for the carriage of hand luggage. In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, which at UTair is 10 kg and dimensions 55x40x20 cm, passengers can carry a backpack with dimensions no more than 40x25x20 cm and weighing no more than 5 kg or a handbag or briefcase, the size and weight of which are not limited . According to the Light fare, hand luggage is the only free baggage allowance. At the "Standard" and "Flexible" fares, in addition to hand luggage, passengers have the opportunity to check in one piece of luggage up to 23 kg and 203 cm.

As Pavel Permyakov, president of Utair – Passenger Airlines, told the Interfax-Tourism portal, the airline is currently not considering the possibility of introducing tariffs without compulsory baggage allowance. “We have a Light tariff, under which a passenger can carry 10 kg in the cabin, and although we are studying the potential for reducing the cost of this tariff, we do not plan to completely cancel the free baggage allowance,” he said.

NordWind

Red Wings

Under the "Light" fare, the airline allows you to carry only one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg and measuring 55x40x20 cm. Under the "Standard" fare, you can take on board one piece of up to 5 kg as hand luggage, and also check in one piece of baggage up to 23 kg and 203 cm.

Air travel is the fastest, most convenient and reliable way of travel and transportation, allowing a passenger and his luggage to move from one place to another in just a few hours, despite the great distance of these places from each other. However, the specific nature of air travel allows the transportation of people only to those airlines and airports that fully comply with generally accepted international standards of safety measures.

In order for the passenger to be given boarding pass, he must strictly comply with the strictest flight rules, which also include the carriage of baggage on board the aircraft. This is done for the general safety of all passengers and the aircraft.

The presented rules are mandatory for all passengers, regardless of the purpose, nature of the trip or the prestige of the cabin class in which you are flying.

In other words, this is a complex of organizational issues aimed at ensuring comfort and speed of flight. And baggage transportation is one of the most important organizational issues, which must be treated especially responsibly in order to eliminate the occurrence of possible problems.

Airplane baggage allowance for 2019

As for the transportation of baggage, it is worth immediately noting the following: the rules providing for this process do not have a single global standard, so there are variations of them, which are influenced by a number of factors.

First- the country you are flying to, since each state has its own rules and standards. For example, when going to Dubai, under no circumstances should you carry with you (not only in your luggage, but also in your hand luggage and in your pockets) objects and literature of a religious nature that are not related to Islam.

Second— Baggage allowance is affected by the choice of airline. In addition, the class of ticket purchased (e.g., economy or business class) and the type of aircraft affect your baggage allowance.

In order to avoid unnecessary complications and problems when checking in luggage, it is necessary to clarify all of the above points during the process of purchasing tickets. If you have non-standard luggage, you should find out the rules for its transportation in advance.

The first thing you need to do is find out which items and things that you want to take with you can be transported by plane, and which are prohibited.

However, despite differences in some baggage rules, all airlines have general rules luggage transportation, used all over the world.

General baggage allowances on board the aircraft

1 - first you need to make sure that the suitcases or bags that you will check into separate places are in good condition and integrity (the absence of various kinds of cuts and cracks) in order to prevent damage to the items contained in them and adjacent luggage during their transportation.

To be safe, you can wrap your luggage in cellophane film yourself. The same procedure can be performed directly at the airport for a small fee. We recommend doing this! By doing this, you will definitely not stain or tear your suitcase or bag.

2 - each airline has its own rules that set the weight and size of checked baggage and unchecked (carry-on) baggage. If you exceed any of the parameters, you will have to pay extra.

3 - you should remember the list of things that are strictly prohibited from being carried on board the aircraft. Neither in checked luggage nor in hand luggage!

What not to pack in your luggage and hand luggage

  • Caustic and corrosive. These include: all types of alkalis, acids; mercury and devices containing it; rechargeable batteries with liquid cells;

Total baggage weight and hand luggage

Things and objects permitted for transportation directly in the passenger cabin of the aircraft are called hand luggage, which is often transported in small bags.

Naturally, the purpose of these restrictive measures is to ensure an adequate level of safety for the aircraft and its passengers throughout the entire flight.

For this reason, most airlines prohibit the carriage of such items in hand luggage as:
  • Knives and long scissors (and sometimes even nail scissors);
  • Corkscrews;
  • Knitting needles;
  • Needles for injections, including hypodermic ones, excluding prescribed cases;
  • Razors, blades and other piercing and cutting instruments and objects.
In addition, there are some restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage, such as:
  • Shampoo;
  • Gel;
  • Perfume;
  • Spray;
  • Mascara;
  • Cream;
  • Water and soft drinks.

According to the rules, it is allowed to transport the listed liquids and substances in hand luggage only in small quantities (up to 100 ml) and exclusively in sealed packages (more accurate data is provided by the specific airline that provides you with services). Exceptions include baby food and liquid medicines, which will be consumed during the flight. Exemptions also include liquids and goods purchased in duty-free shops ( "Duty Free").

As for the weight of luggage and hand luggage, certain limits also apply here. For hand luggage, the weight range ranges from 7 to 15 kg for 1 piece. For luggage, the permissible weight is on average 20–30 kg.

There is also a list of items and things that a passenger has the right to carry with him free of charge in the aircraft cabin, even if they exceed the permissible weight limits (20 kg) for unpaid baggage allowance:

  • Briefcase or handbag;
  • Umbrella;
  • Paper folder;
  • Cane;
  • Bouquet of flowers;
  • Crutches and wheelchair for transporting a passenger with limited mobility;
  • Mobile phone;
  • Outerwear and suit in a suitcase;
  • Printed publications for in-flight reading;
  • Video camera and photo camera;
  • Laptop;
  • Baby cradle for transporting a child.

Items from the list are not marked, weighed or presented for registration.
Regarding the transportation of non-standard and oversized items, such as musical instruments, sports equipment and others not included in any of the lists, you must contact airline representatives in advance.

As can be seen from everything written, carrying luggage is a rather complicated process, and in order to avoid problems, it is better to take care in advance to comply with all measures and requirements.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments. Please check the details of your flight and luggage: flight direction, amount of luggage, etc. We, in turn, will try to answer everyone as soon as possible.

Dear passengers, the rules of transportation were written not to limit your rights, but to ensure that your flight is safe. Don't ignore them!

And finally. It should be remembered that it is better to arrive at check-in 2 hours before departure in order to ensure a good mood and prevent possible difficulties.

Before flying, it is important to study the basic rules and requirements for the size and weight of luggage. Travelers always tend to carry extra items in addition to their checked baggage. It is better to take some valuables with you, but it is important to follow the rules set by the airline. For hand luggage, there are maximum dimensions - the size of a suitcase that can be taken on an airplane must correspond to the parameters specified in the rules.

To prevent the trip from causing discomfort, it is important to purchase in advance a suitcase or bag of the required size for transporting things in the aircraft cabin, guided by the regulatory requirements for regulating transportation in the selected company. The passenger must take into account the following parameters:

  • permissible size of luggage, as well as total weight;
  • number of pieces of baggage (varies depending on the class);
  • a regulatory list of all items that are prohibited from being transported on board an aircraft.

When traveling on international flights, you should always remember that the standard list of permitted and prohibited items carried in the cabin may vary in accordance with additional legal regulations of a particular country. As hand luggage airlines recommend transporting valuable and fragile items, important documents, various digital electronic devices. It is necessary to take care of packaging in advance, which is guaranteed to allow fragile items to be transported safely.

For luggage carried in the cabin, it is important to choose the right bag or suitcase. It should be remembered that the dimensions must fully correspond to the dimensions of the overhead luggage compartment of the aircraft. Detailed compliance with the safety standards established by the airline during the flight guarantees the safety of personal luggage, as well as the safety of passengers. When transporting gadgets, you should place the devices in an additional bag in a special compartment in the suitcase.

Acceptable dimensions of hand luggage

The passenger is solely responsible for the safety of his own belongings packed in luggage. It is also important to take into account the maximum possible dimensional solutions of the suitcase, which, according to accepted airline standards, have the following parameters:

  • the length of luggage should not exceed 55 cm;
  • The height of the hand luggage bag should be no more than 40 cm;
  • The width of the suitcase is no more than 20 cm.

The total value of all dimensions of a suitcase cannot be more than 115 cm. These parameters are a kind of “gold standard” for airlines, but some carriers may establish individual additions to existing standards. General parameters may vary by 3-6 cm, so the passenger must inquire in advance about the permissible size and weight restrictions for the transportation of luggage.

According to flight safety requirements, standard luggage must fit in the main overhead bin.

Important! Low-cost airlines provide special restrictions on the size of luggage and set individual parameters.

Before boarding, airline employees must weigh the suitcase that you can take with you into the cabin, and also check the dimensions using a special frame. If your hand luggage does not meet the required parameters, you must check your items into the main luggage compartment for a fee - the surcharge in this case may be much higher than that provided for standard baggage check-in. Some companies require a fairly high overpayment for “adding” luggage to the main luggage, which can be up to 4,000 rubles.

To avoid unexpected expenses, you must study in advance the requirements provided on the official website of any airline. For carry-on luggage, it is important to purchase a standard suitcase that fits the transportation conditions of most companies.

In addition to the standard regulated piece of hand luggage on the plane, you can take with you an umbrella, flowers, a handbag, outerwear and medicine. Additionally, the passenger has the right to take with him a stroller for a child or a cradle, baby food, as well as a wheelchair, if the dimensions meet the established standards. Foreign airlines allow you to take an additional small bag, laptop or camera free of charge. But these items are also subject to volume restrictions.

In addition to the “dimensional” check, standard hand luggage undergoes mandatory weight control. Each aircraft model has an individual tonnage, which is strictly not recommended to be exceeded.

Allowable weight of baggage in the aircraft cabin

The size of bags that can be taken on board the aircraft is carefully controlled by airline staff. The total weight of hand luggage must comply with the regulated parameters. Items larger than the size limits may be added to general baggage by security staff due to the special requirements of traveling at altitude. It is worth noting that it is not recommended to exceed the volume and weight of luggage; it is better to hand over items whose parameters do not meet the established criteria to the luggage compartment in advance. All this will allow you to avoid additional monetary sanctions.

General luggage weight requirements may depend on the following parameters:

  • regulated requirements of the airline;
  • airplane models;
  • class of purchased air ticket;
  • general flight route.

The standard weight of hand luggage on Russian airlines is 5-10 kg.

In advance, the passenger can always check the total weight of individual luggage at a free check-in counter and, if necessary, transfer excess items to the general compartment. But if a passenger flies only with hand luggage, he does not have the opportunity to check the weight at the check-in counter, so you need to take care in advance to find out the resulting weight “parameters”.

Fairly strict weight control safety measures apply to each air carrier, but each of them sets individual standards. If for Russian carriers restrictions mainly vary up to 5 kg; some foreign companies may allow items with a total weight of up to 12 kg to be transported. (For example, Air company France).

A particularly strict weight control system is provided for low-cost airlines. Hand luggage is checked for compliance with size and weight criteria 3 times: during direct check-in, in the standard security area, and also before the boarding gate. All this is provided for flight safety and comfortable transportation of passengers. The overall dimensions are fully designed to fit the dimensions of the luggage compartment of the upper shelf.

The standard weight of permitted hand luggage is 8-10 kg, but some airlines, for example Thomas Cook, allow items weighing no more than 5 kg to be carried in the cabin, while Iberia sets virtually no special weight restrictions.

Number of pieces in hand luggage

The total number of standard pieces of hand luggage can be set directly by the rules of the airline that carries out the transportation. According to the standard, luggage should not occupy more than one piece of luggage (1 person - one suitcase). Russian airlines Additionally, you are allowed to take an umbrella, a handbag, a folding baby stroller, and a duty-free bag into your hand luggage without taking into account the space it takes up.

Business class passengers can take “2 pieces” of hand luggage with them, but in this case size restrictions and weight controls will apply. For economy class passengers standard rules- one piece of luggage up to 7 kg.

Important! Sometimes an exception is provided if particularly fragile items are carried as hand luggage - a slight excess in size is permissible, subject to a thorough inspection of the property being transported.

What not to take on board an airplane

Flying by plane requires compliance with the rules approved by the air carrier, according to which each airline has a list of items prohibited for flight. This is a security requirement - if prohibited items are carried, security officers may confiscate luggage regardless of value.

You cannot bring flammable or explosive substances, toxic chemicals or lighters on board the aircraft or into the general luggage compartment. You cannot transport unregistered weapons - a detailed inspection will be carried out customs service followed by confiscation.

Additionally, passengers are not allowed to carry:

  • toxic materials;
  • toys that imitate weapons;
  • various ammunition and flammable substances;
  • liquids whose volume exceeds the standard 100 ml (exceptions may include medications and baby food);
  • any piercing or cutting objects;
  • materials that are classified as magnetic;
  • lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh.

You are also not allowed to take pets on board - there is a special luggage compartment for them for safe transportation. Carriage of a pet is carried out for an additional fee. Some household appliances are also prohibited in the aircraft cabin - tweezers, straight razors, scissors, folding knives, knitting needles, nail files.

Quite often, even experienced tourists have a question: what kind of cargo can be carried on an airplane? What weight and dimensions of luggage are allowed? How to save money on a flight, avoid paying for your luggage, or what to do if your backpack is lost. We will consider all these issues in detail in the article.

International transportation rules do not regulate clear standards for baggage transportation (each carrier has the right to independently change the numbers within the established rules, ticket price and aircraft type). Baggage is not always checked out individually for each passenger. There are two transportation systems:

  1. Weight.
  2. Local.

The suitcase must be checked at the counter, after which it is sent to the luggage compartment

Weight system

This principle of transportation is relevant in almost all CIS countries and Asia, as well as with some carriers in the European Union. It allows you to carry free luggage of a certain weight:

  • in economy class, the weight of the suitcase should not exceed twenty kilograms, and its dimensions should not exceed 203 centimeters (meaning the sum of length, height and width);
  • in business class, the weight allowed for transportation reaches 30 kilograms with the same bag dimensions.

If your baggage exceeds any established parameter in at least one point, then the carrier may require you to pay for a second “piece” at the domestic rate.

According to the official rules of air carriers, each child under two years of age is guaranteed free baggage allowance weighing up to 10 kilograms. In this case, the child may not have a separate ticket (flies in the same seat with his parents). Children who are already 12 years old are entitled to an “adult” rate of free cargo transportation.

This system is quite convenient, since the number of your bags is not limited, and when traveling together, the weight adds up. If you both take an economy class ticket, then you have the opportunity to take with you one travel bag weighing 40 kilograms, two bags weighing 15 and 25 kilograms, or three with a total weight of up to 43 kg (don’t forget about the dimensions).

Note: Regular airline customers can receive a bonus from it and increase the weight of transported cargo by 10-15 kilograms.

It is very important to ensure there is no overload. The policies of different airlines may vary greatly on this matter. If you are overweight by a kilogram, some carriers can turn a blind eye to this, while others issue a full invoice for the excess weight (quite considerable). Therefore, be sure to inquire in advance about the rules and regulations for transporting baggage on an airplane: they are usually indicated either in the itinerary receipt or on the company’s website.

Baggage enters the compartment via a transport belt

Place system

The weight system is quite convenient, but it is slowly fading into oblivion and being replaced by a local one. Initially, this system worked in the USA and Canada, now it has spread to South and Central America, Europe, Australia and even Russia (Aeroflot recently switched to it). Here the transported mass is also divided depending on the purchased class:

  • in economy you can take one seat with a bag weighing up to 23 kg;
  • The business has two pieces of luggage weighing 32 kg each (total 64 kg).

Note: When flying to the US and Canada, carriers often provide two cargo seats in economy classes. Check this information in advance.

If you use bonus program carriers, you can get yourself an extra seat.

One of the main features of the seat system is that the weight of the bags is not cumulative. That is, if you are traveling together in economy class and are carrying two bags weighing 25 and 15 kilograms, then you will be forced to pay for an overload of 2 kilograms (this will be considered as third place). Very often, the cost of a third seat is comparable to the cost of half or a whole flight ticket, especially for low-cost airlines. The same situation applies to independent travel- if you have two places of 23 kilograms each, then you will not be able to put two bags of 30 and 10 kilograms on them.

Baggage rules may vary from airline to airline.

Note: Trade unions in many countries prohibit movers from lifting suitcases heavier than 32 kilograms. Having loaded 33 kg, you will not only pay extra for a new place, but also face a serious problem with cargo delivery.

The requirements for a suitcase in a seat system are more stringent - the sum of its three sides should not be more than 158 cm.

Oversized luggage

If the cargo you are transporting does not fall within the above parameters, then you will have to register it as oversized. According to the rules for carrying baggage on an airplane, the following are considered oversized:

  1. A suitcase or bag weighing more than 32 kilograms and measuring more than 203 cm.
  2. Various sports equipment (skis, surfboard and snowboard, trekking poles, etc.).
  3. Musical instruments (guitars, trombones, accordions, etc.).
  4. Various climate and household appliances (air conditioners, washing machines, freezers, refrigerators, TVs).

The carriage of any oversized cargo must be discussed in advance with the airline - if you arrive at the airport an hour before boarding and without warning, there is a high probability that it will simply not be accepted.

Note: the airline may refuse to transport you oversized items. There can be many reasons for this - lack of free space, inappropriate type of aircraft (the cargo may simply not fit into the loading hatches).

Oversize space is always paid according to the company's tariffs (it does not fall under the concept of free space). Although some companies allow free transportation of ski equipment in winter, thus luring customers.

Transportation of fragile luggage

Airline policy allows for the carriage of fragile luggage aircraft. To do this, upon delivery, you must declare at the reception that it is fragile. An airport employee will put a special sticker on the suitcase, and the cargo will be delivered to the baggage compartment manually, and not at the elevator. However, the airline does not bear legal responsibility for its integrity. Therefore, it is recommended to take fragile items into the cabin and check them out as hand luggage.

Properly folded luggage will quickly pass inspection

Restrictions

Most airlines prohibit the following substances from being carried in the hold:

  1. Radioactive (note that absolutely all cargo is tested for radioactivity, so if you buy a souvenir and it turns out to be radioactive, you will have serious problems).
  2. Explosives (including cartridges, gunpowder, sparklers, flares, firecrackers, etc.).
  3. Highly flammable (no lighters, refill bottles, gasoline, solvents).
  4. Various gases (self-defense cans and, in some cases, deodorants).
  5. Toxic, oxidizing and poisonous.

It is also prohibited to carry weapons on airplanes (unless there is a special cabinet in the luggage compartment) and dangerous objects that can be used for attack. When transporting weapons, special permits are required, which are issued at customs.

Rules for the carriage of hand luggage

The passenger must distinguish between “baggage” and “hand luggage”. Baggage is a suitcase that is checked in at the airport upon landing. Carry-on luggage is a backpack or bag that you can take with you. The weight of luggage and the weight of baggage on an airplane for one person do not add up.

The following standards exist:

  • In business, luggage dimensions are no more than 115 cm (three dimensions), weight - 15 kg.
  • In economy - 115 cm, 10 kg.

Note: in most cases, you can take additional things with you: a book, a camera, a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet, outerwear, an umbrella, a folding stroller, food for a child, medicine, etc. A full list of these things can be found in the Rules of Transportation of this airline. These items do not add up to the luggage dimensions and weight.

Try to take a little less luggage with you than the airline allows. Sometimes problems can start due to an excess of even 500 grams. Want to avoid trouble? We will tell you a few nuances:

  • before purchasing tickets, study the carrier’s rules regarding luggage (many low-cost airlines do not include it in the ticket price);
  • Once you know how many kilograms you can carry, be sure to weigh your suitcase (this can be done at the nearest post office or on a home scale by picking up the bag);
  • if overloaded, transfer heavy items to hand luggage or simply take them on board (laptop, camera);
  • According to the rules, items in hand luggage must be in plastic bags zipped;
  • if possible, try to register your cargo not as luggage, but as luggage (you will save a lot of time during check-in and will not lose your things).

You can take your laptop with you - it’s not carry-on luggage or luggage

If the cargo is lost

So, you already know how much baggage you can carry on a plane. Now we will explain what to do if your cargo does not arrive at its destination with you. At the airport you must receive it using a tag or receipt - it is issued at the point of departure when passing through the counter. If there is no cargo, then you will have to write a statement to search for it. The airline will have to find it within 3 weeks and return it to you. If the suitcase is still missing or damaged, then a second application for compensation is written. Quite often, carriers (especially from CIS countries) send a refusal - feel free to take it and go to court. As a result, you will be compensated for moral and material damage.

Note: the airline must deliver your cargo by specified address, and not force you to drive after him. This is standard and does not need to be paid separately.
