Which resort is closer to Colombo? Colombo and the west coast of sri lanka sri lanka regions

I love Colombo for its contrasts - historical quarters intersect with modern fashionable districts, luxury coexists with poverty. Here, on a small piece of land, the history of European countries and local ancient traditions, the heritage of many cultures are intertwined.

Like the rest of Sri Lanka, Colombo is a great designer. At first, it was very unusual for me to see a leaning shack next to skyscrapers. Or as soon as I took a step away from the wide avenue, I found myself in the bustle of shopping streets, where the voices of the sellers merged into a hum, as if in a large hive.

How to get there

From Moscow, St. Petersburg to Colombo can only be reached by plane. For safety reasons, sea passenger traffic even from neighboring countries was stopped during the civil war that ended in Sri Lanka in 2004. But so far this type of transport has not been restored in the country.

By plane

The only one international Airport Sri Lanka is located 35 kilometers from Colombo. Planes fly here from all over the world, you don't often see so many people and different nationalities - these are tourists, pilgrims, and local residents returning from work from rich Arab countries.

Direct flights from Russia are rare. If it does happen, then the charters from Moscow are part of the tour packages of Russian operators. Mostly tourists from Moscow and St. Petersburg fly by regular flights of one of the Arab airlines (Emirates or its daughter FlyDubai, Etihad, Qatar Airways) with one change (in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, respectively). Other major Russian cities can also be reached by FlyDubai without transit through Moscow.

The cost of tickets varies from 20,000 RUB to 35,000 RUB depending on the city, season and promotions held by airlines. Ticket options can be viewed. Average travel time from Russia to Sri Lanka is about 12-14 hours.

I can say that the services of Bandaranaike Airport are working smoothly. For all the numerous arrivals and departures, everything was smooth and fast - from passport control to baggage claim.

And yet, as practice has shown, in the arrival hall of the airport the most favorable exchange rate for local Sri Lankan rupees.

How to get from the airport to Colombo, I will tell you below.

By bus

The cheapest (only 1 USD (150 LKR)) but relatively time consuming way to get to Colombo is by shuttle bus # 187. It runs 24/7 between Colombo Central Bus Stand and the airport.

Moving on it along toll roads, you can get to the capital in 45 minutes, sometimes due to traffic jams in 1 hour. In an air-conditioned cabin with views of the Colombo countryside, time flies by.

You can find the bus at the exit from the airport - move along the arrival platform to the left.

There are also private buses to the city, but they will cost about 3.2 USD (500 LKR), most likely, the barkers will send you to them. Be guided by the map and the fare.

By car

An alternative way would be to get to Colombo by car. Compared to a bus, it is much more expensive, but more comfortable and often faster.

  • Taxi. The cost of an official taxi from the airport to Colombo depends on the area you need to arrive in. For example, you can get to the Fort area (Colombo 01) for 16 USD (2400 LKR) without air conditioning or 17 USD (2650 LKR) for a car with air conditioning. The taxi stand is located in the arrivals hall. The exact location can be found on the airport map.
  • Knock Knock. This is a possible but highly questionable option. Firstly, it takes a long time, secondly, it is less comfortable than a taxi, and thirdly, it is very expensive - 13 USD (2000 LKR)! And some tuk-tukers scam and take tourists to the neighboring city of Negombo instead of the capital Colombo for this huge amount of money.
  • Car rental. Only the most daring and skillful drivers will risk driving their own car in Sri Lanka. Usually, if rented, it is for long-distance travel. For Colombo, this is not the most convenient option. The city is quite close, and there are serious traffic jams during rush hours. A lot of tuk-tuk, mopeds, buses - all this creates a very stressful environment.

When is the season. When is the best time to go

You can come to Colombo at any time of the year, but keep in mind that during the rainy season - from April to October - it will be hot and humid. Still, the tropical climate makes itself felt. When we walk around the city all day, we feel it on ourselves. The sea breeze from the ocean is no longer here. On the other hand, if you travel by taxi or tuk-tuk, then the time of the year does not matter.

Between November and March, Colombo has relatively dry weather. The air temperature is about + 28-30 ° С, and the ocean temperature fluctuates from +27 to +30 ° С throughout the year.

Colombo in summer

The period is characterized by an increase in humidity, as well as frequent, but short-term showers. It's all the fault of the rainy season, in which the summer falls. All months pass under the influence of monsoons.

Daytime temperature rises to +32 ° С, and night temperature fluctuates around +26 ° С. In summer, what I dislike most of all is the overhanging haze, which makes the atmosphere in the city a bit gloomy.

Colombo in autumn

In September, it often rains - dense and strong, however, short-term. During the autumn months, showers can still occur during the day. Gradually, by November, the weather improves, and the climate becomes drier and warmer.

The air temperature during the day is +30 ° С, at night - +26 ° С. But any whims of the weather are not a hindrance, because in autumn there are major festivals and national holidays that make the atmosphere even hotter.

Colombo in spring

In early spring - in March - the weather is still wonderful, there is practically no rain, but with the onset of April everything changes. Monsoon rains come, the peak of which in spring is in May. And the hottest month of the year is April. The daytime temperature at this time is + 34 ° С, and the nighttime temperature is + 26 ° С.

I think this period is best for a trip to Colombo, as the weather is good and there are not as many tourists as in winter.

Colombo in winter

January is the coldest month in Colombo - + 29-30 ° С during the day and +23 ° С at night.

In general, the winter months from December to February are the high season in Sri Lanka, it is the most comfortable for the human body, which is why many tourists come to Colombo at this time. During this time, long walks around the city are easiest.

Districts. Where is the best place to live

I would like to point out 2 areas in Colombo that are interesting from the point of view of accommodation. In other districts, there are houses of local residents. Although there are hotels, getting from there to the main attractions is very troublesome.

  • 1 - Fort, Galle Free Face, Cinnamon Gardens, Lake Beira. There are mainly expensive luxury hotels, 3-5 * hotels. Price per room - from 65 USD (10,000 LKR) and much higher.
  • 2 - the further from the city center, the lower the prices. For budget accommodation, tourists prefer this area, since prices are not high, and the center can be reached by train. Payment for a room - from 13 USD (2000 LKR) and above.

I will immediately indicate that in every area of Colombo you can find housing for any budget. Even in high-end neighborhoods like Fort or Galle Face Green, there are affordable guest houses or hostels, but of course there are very few of them.

What are the prices for rest

On average, you will need 25 USD (4000 LKR) per day in Colombo. It all depends on where you will eat - in a hotel, in a cafe or cook on your own. Also, shopping and entertainment affect costs.

I can give the following tips on how to save money:

Major attractions. What to watch

A pastime in Colombo has nothing to do with beach vacations and resort excursions. Traveling around the city implies the whole range of interesting things that can be in the capital - museums, temples, monuments, beautiful buildings colonial period and not only.

You can walk around Colombo for more than one day, exploring the main attractions. It is quite possible to do it yourself, without a guide. It is better to move around the city on foot, although you can also take a tuk-tuk or a bus.

By the way, a double-decker tourist bus runs to the points with the main attractions of Colombo, which departs from the Kingsbury Hotel.

Top 5

Be sure to visit the 5 pearls of Colombo:

Beaches. Which is better

Colombo itself is a huge port city. Although it is located on the ocean coast, it is not particularly suitable for swimming. Local residents, and tourists alike, prefer to go to the beach in the suburbs of the metropolis - Mount Lavinia (15 km), Negombo (30 km).

Mount Lavinia Beach

Getting from Colombo to Mount Lavinia is easy.

All buses and trains that run south along the coast pass here. Stop - Mount Lavinia.

Mount Lavinia's huge sandy beach is at your disposal. There is practically no infrastructure, only rare cafes, guest houses on the shore. But the city with restaurants and shops is within walking distance - you can always buy something you need.

In Sri Lanka, it is declared that all beaches are public, but there is a private one at the Grand Hotel, which I recommend using. Sun loungers by the pool and on the beach, cleanliness and order, polite staff and a "bohemian" atmosphere for only 6.5 USD (1000 LKR). Drinks, food in the restaurant and on the terrace at an additional cost.

Beach "Negombo"

There is no longer any bustle of the city, there is more peace and tranquility than in Mount Lavinia. True, "Negombo" is a resort town with surprises. For swimming, it is better to choose a part of the beach in the Lewis Place area, it is somehow cleaned by local hoteliers. Renting a sun lounger costs about 3-4 USD (500-600 LKR).

There is a lot of rubbish and dirt to the north and south of this area, so you will have to look for a place to stay.

Along the coast you can find small clubs for active pastime - windsurfing, sea fishing, diving.

Churches and temples. Which are worth visiting

In multiconfessional Colombo, I met temples of almost all religions in the world. In addition to Buddhism and Hinduism, traditionally practiced by the inhabitants of Sri Lanka, there are Muslim mosques and Catholic temples that have remained in Ceylon since colonial times.

Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple

One of the largest Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka and, in my opinion, the most beautiful and romantic. We give it a special charm by its location - right on the shores of the picturesque Lake Beira. It is not for nothing that newlyweds often arrange photo shoots here, but for all tourists in Gangaramaya, this is a must-have in Colombo.

The temple consists of several parts - including, you can visit the museum, where special offerings are collected: a chair made of elephant tusks, coins, porcelain, rare Buddha statues made of various minerals and precious stones, ancient manuscripts, books and much more.

The temple is open from 6:00 to 18:00. Admission is free, but it is customary to leave a donation of 0.7 USD (100 LKR).

Be sure to remove your shoes before entering the temple. There is also organized paid storage of training in cells - 0.7 USD (100 LKR).

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

Built in the early 20th century, Jamul Alfar is the country's main mosque. Fabulous building! The wall tiles in red and white make it look like a chess palace or some delicious outlandish cake.

The temple is active, open around the clock. If namaz is held, then the entrance to tourists is prohibited. Cover your knees and shoulders. Admission is free and for men only. Shoes are left at the doorstep.

St Lucia's Cathedral

This is the main Catholic temple in Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that only 6 percent of the island's population is Catholic, it is crowded, mainly due to tourists from various European countries. Inside there are statues of saints, including the patroness of the temple. The church is open from 6:00 to 18:30. The entrance is free.

Ganeshan Temple and Kathiresan Kovil

Hindu temples, unusual for our oku - with many figurines of gods - can also be found in Colombo. Sea Street is especially abundant in such objects. In particular, these are the Ganeshan Temple, Old Kathiresan Kovil and New Kathiresan Kovil Katiresan.

They were built according to the strict canons of Hinduism. I advise you to inspect the temples from the outside, tourists do not go inside.

Museums. Which are worth visiting

Like any other capital, Colombo contains many artifacts that tell about the history of the island, its colonial period, as well as the present since the country's independence. In addition, the canvases of Sri Lankan artists will also be interesting, sometimes completely unexpected, and sometimes reflecting an understandable plot, but recreated in a new way.

Opening hours of museums: from 9:00 to 17:00 (Saturday to Thursday, excluding holidays).

Most are located fairly compactly in the central area (see map).

Parks

Sri Lankans are mostly Buddhists, which means that it is very important for them to live in harmony with nature. Despite the fact that civilization in such large metropolis as Colombo is gradually coming, the city has many green areas, alleys, parks and other corners of nature.

Viharamahadevi Park

The Viharamahadevi Park, located in the very center of the city, will help you hide from the bustle and scorching sun. It is impossible to skip it, because many sights, museums, monuments are located in this area.

The park is decorated in a traditional English style. It was originally named after Queen Victoria, and only 10 years after gaining independence, Ceylon was named after the Sinhalese Queen Mother - Viharamahadevi. Quiet, calm place where you can take a walk, sit on a bench or right on the grass. Suitable for families with children. There is a playground with attractions.

At the entrance to the park, an alley with fountains begins, which ends at the feet of a huge statue of Buddha. There are benches, gazebos, open library... The Viharamahadevi park even houses a small botanical garden, where tropical trees, shrubs, orchids, etc. grow. In the center of the park there is a lake that you can swim around by boat.

The entrance is free.

Tourist areas

I advise you to walk around Colombo to plunge into the originality of its districts, to feel that “Colombo is a city of contrasts!”

Fort

Once the port area of Colombo, from where the ships of the British, Dutch, Portuguese, exported spices, gems, wood, etc.

Here are the offices of large companies (1), various financial institutions, stock exchange and banks. In addition, in the Fort area there are the most expensive hotels that amaze with their gloss and scope. I suggest stopping by the Kingsbury Hotel (2) for a cocktail in the bar with great city views.

But the main thing is that in the Fort area you can find the best examples of colonial architecture, because the governors and other protégés of Great Britain settled here in the 19th century. Now these buildings are used as administrative or retail premises. For example, Cargills (3) and Millers stores, Dutch Hospital, the residence of the President of Sri Lanka (4), as well as the former Clock Tower lighthouse (5).

It was a revelation for me that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov lived in the building of the Grand Oriental (6) in 1890. The corresponding memorial plaque says about it. For a small fee, you can visit the museum room, where the furniture, some historical documents and photographs have been preserved.

Pettah

The name of the area is translated as “outside the Fort”. This area is already more colorful with national notes (more Muslim), noisy streets and markets - a real shopping center of the city.

In addition to sightseeing, some shopping can be done in the area. But do not idealize Pettah - there are still a lot of Chinese goods, so you need to choose carefully and bargain well.

What must be done is to buy exotic fruits at the fruit market (1). In the late afternoon, I like to walk around the Floating Market (2) - a colorful place.

Be sure to visit the Jamul Alfar Mosque (3) and the Dutch Museum (4).

Need to go to another city? The main railway station (5) and bus stations (6) are located in the Pettah area.

Cinnamon Gardens and Slave Island

To the south of Pettah, along Lake Beira, there are elite districts. It is already quieter, more spacious, there are many squares.

“Slave Island” (1) is a small area along the lake where slaves lived, brought by the Portuguese to work on cinnamon plantations. Perfect place for a walk along the path to the fantastic temple of Sim Malak (2). It is beautiful both during the day and in the evening, strikingly contrasts against the backdrop of the business district of Colombo with the towers of the World Trade Center. Not far from the temple is the Vihara Mahadevi park (3), which I wrote about above.

Check out the top museums in Colombo - the National Museum (4), the National Art Gallery (5), and more modern attractions such as the New Town Hall (6) and the Independence Memorial Hall ( 7). The area is saturated with the theme of independence - in architecture and names of persons. Festive events are traditionally held at Independence Square (8).

The romantic name "Cinnamon Gardens" (9), unfortunately, is only formally. Yes, earlier there were many such trees, but gradually they were cut down.

Galle Face

This is not a district, but a huge promenade. During the day they play football here, couples sit under umbrellas, admiring the ocean, and in the evening Sri Lankan families get out here for a walk.

Along the promenade there are expensive hotels with a long history, for example, Taj Samudra 5 * (1) and Galle Face Hotel (2), where you can drop in for a cup of tea, or just look at the interiors.

What to see in 1 day

I suggest the following plan to see Colombo in a day:

What to see in the vicinity

Dehiwala Zoological Garden

In the Dehiwala Zoo (10 km from Colombo) you can see tigers, lions, jaguars, reptiles, as well as an elephant show, a butterfly garden, an aquarium and much more. The zoo map can be viewed on.

Oldest in South-East Asia the park strives not only to show animals, but also to instill respect for nature, presenting its fauna in all its glory.

Zoo opening hours: daily from 8:30 to 18:00. Ticket prices: 16 USD (2500 LKR) - adults, 8 USD (1250 LKR) - children.

You can get here by Uber taxi 4.5 USD (700 LKR), by tuk-tuk 3.2 USD (500 LKR), or public transport... Take bus number 176 to the Dehiwala stop. To choose where it is more convenient to board in Colombo, see the route map.

Food. What to try

Sri Lankan cuisine overlaps with Indian, Arabic, New Zealand. The dish is based on spices, rice, flour, coconut. Curry is very popular in this country. Meat, side dishes, poultry and fish are served with it.

I will list what I love from national dishes:

  • Kottu - a mixture of chopped dough, vegetables, cheese, meat of your choice
  • String hoppers - thin nest-shaped rice noodles
  • Hoppers - not to be confused with String Hoppes! these are local pancakes made with coconut milk and rice flour

You can read more information about local dishes.

In Colombo, for no particular reason, I am in no hurry to run to an expensive restaurant. I prefer street food. It is there that the dishes are the freshest, as they are prepared in front of your eyes. At the same time, food will cost between USD 1-2 (155-310 LKR). In restaurants, the price tag is much higher.

Budget

Not expensive - from 2 to 4 USD (from 300 to 700 LKR) you can eat your fill in the following establishments:

  • Hotel De Pilawoos
  • Life food
  • Curry Pot
  • The chaat kade
  • Majestic city

Middle level

In these cafes and restaurants, lunch or dinner will cost around 3.5-10 USD (500-1500 LKR):

  • Curry leaf
  • Graze Kitchen
  • Chutneys At Cinnamon Grand Colombo
  • Barefoot Garden Cafe
  • Sky lounge

Expensive

The average bill in restaurants will be from 6.5 to 20 USD (from 1000 to 3000 LKR):

  • The lagoon
  • Gallery Cafe
  • Ministry of Crab
  • The Ocean at Hotel Kingsbury
  • Sea spray

Holidays

Since people of different faiths live in Colombo, religious holidays are held in the city quite often. They are accompanied by colorful fireworks, costumed processions with drummers and dancers - this is what attracts tourists to Colombo. Fairs are open throughout the city.

Made the greatest impression on me Vesak Poya (Buddha's Birthday)... On this day, millions of lights were lit in the city: these are original home garlands, and huge lamps that are specially prepared for the holiday. The culmination of the evening was a ship that sailed across Lake Beira in a twinkling of iridescent lights, delighting both tourists and locals.

Safety. What to watch out for

To make your vacation pass without stress and loss, I advise you to observe the following points:

  • In general, the city is not criminal, but still I do not recommend walking at night, especially on the beach.
  • Be vigilant in crowds, especially around markets and train stations. As in other large cities in Colombo pickpockets can wield.
  • When purchasing gemstones or jewelry, be sure to ask for a certificate. It will be at least some kind of guarantee of the quality of the goods, and most importantly, it will help to avoid customs problems on the way back.

In general, read about the safety rules in Sri Lanka.

Things to do

In addition to visiting attractions, walking around the city, shopping, you can also find other entertainments in Colombo. For example, enjoy a massage at the spa or do yoga.

Spa salons

In Sri Lanka, as a country that carries Ayurvedic knowledge, health and spa centers are especially popular. If you have enough time, I recommend visiting at least one of:

  • Spa Ceylon
  • ExSerendib Ayurveda Cure & Therapy
  • Amber Spa
  • Azmaara Spa

Cleanliness, respect, procedures at a high professional level, specialists with diplomas, and most importantly, the effect is soothing and relaxing, or invigorating and positive, depending on the chosen procedure. Of course, one should not expect a cure from serious illnesses from them, but it is possible to restore strength, calm the mind, and have a good rest.

The cost of procedures starts from 20 USD (3000 LKR).

In addition to a large range of spa services, the centers also have a beautician offering to do manicure, pedicure, etc. In addition, there are shops in the salons where you can buy Ayurvedic creams, shampoos, scrubs, etc. I must say right away that they are more expensive there than in shopping malls (eg Spa Ceylon), but finding them is not always easy. Some brands of spa cosmetics are exclusive and are only sold in the salon.

Yoga

Of course, yoga is widespread in Sri Lanka, however, classes are considered more elite and are expensive (especially for local residents). Basically, they are engaged in self-knowledge in special retreat centers, which are located on the sea along the entire coast of the island. But there are also several yoga centers in Colombo:

  • The om space
  • Prana Lounge Holistic Health & Yoga Center

The last of the listed is located closest to the central part of the city. The cost of 1 lesson is 5-7 USD (800-1000 LKR). Opening hours: 8: 00-20: 00.

Shopping and shops

The concept of “shopping” is a stretch to apply to Sri Lanka, but Colombo is perhaps the only city in the country where there are shopping malls and shops.

List of stores, noteworthy:

In stores, you can buy high-quality cotton and leather goods, jewelry inexpensive by Russian standards, as well as spa cosmetics, Ayurvedic ointments and creams. But the main thing is spices and Ceylon tea. Oddly enough, it is very difficult to buy good tea in the supermarket, because locals drink FBOP - fine and strong tea. And for our taste, OP is better, in extreme cases - BOP.

In Sri Lanka, clothes of all famous world brands are produced. Products in which there is a small defect should be destroyed, but by some miracle they can be found in the markets, in private stores, however, the label will be cut on them, but the quality is excellent, and the flaw can be almost invisible, or it can be easily eliminated. For example, to alter the buttons.

Shop hours: from 10:00 to 20:00, except weekends and holidays (often on Sundays they only open until 15:00). ODEL is focused on tourists, so it works all days of the week, including holidays.

You can buy groceries at the following supermarkets: Food City and Keells Super. These are 2 competitors, the assortment in stores is approximately similar, including in terms of prices.

Bars. Where to go

In Colombo, nightlife is actively developing with its bars, nightclubs, casinos. In many ways, bars are nightclubs with a disco. They are usually open at large luxury hotels. Let's mark the best of them.

Sky lounge

Located in the exquisite Kingsbury Hotel. One of the most remarkable nightlife spots in the city. In addition to interesting cocktails, as well as high-quality imported alcohol, you can have a full dinner here - try the chef's dishes. Average bill per person - from 10 USD (1500 LKR).

Inn on the Green

Such establishments are not often found in Colombo. You can describe it as a classic British pub. Located at the Inn on the Green, the bar offers a British-era atmosphere and English cuisine. Wooden interiors and darkened lights result in a comfortable ambience, highlighted by music ranging from pop and other genres. On average, 20 USD (3000 LKR) is left here.

Molly "s Pub

The only Irish pub in Colombo is named after the song "Sweet Molly Malone". All the traditions of a real pub are observed here: friendly owners, live music, a cozy atmosphere and delicious Irish delicacies. Average check - 20 USD (3000 LKR).

Curve

A trendy lange bar with a purple and silver decorative theme. The bar offers acknowledged snacks as well as a wide selection of drinks. On the stage of the establishment you can meet performers of neo-jazz or soul music. In addition, the bar has a whiskey area called The Vault, where drinkers can choose from a solid collection. One of the main advantages is the sustained balance between the atmosphere of nightlife and romantic privacy. Average check - 30 USD (5000 LKR).

ON14

The bar is located on the 14th floor of the OZO hotel, located almost on the oceanfront. A very fashionable place where many people strive to go. Best views the ocean opens precisely from the roof of the hotel, i.e. from this bar. Rather, the style of the establishment can be described as a Lounge. There is a pool right on the territory of the bar (on the 14th floor!). In addition, the bartenders offer both classic and completely unique signature cocktails. Per person is usually left 25 USD (4000 LKR).

Clubs and nightlife

Casino

One of the main elements of Colombo nightlife. And there are many gambling establishments in the capital of Sri Lanka. Please note that they only work for foreigners. Local residents are prohibited from playing at the legislative level.

Only foreign citizens who have reached the age of 18 are allowed in the casino. You will be asked for a passport to check at the entrance. The dress code is not strict: beachwear and sportswear should be avoided. In the evening, tuxedos and dresses are recommended.

The most classic place that rivals European and American casinos is Bally's.

Inside you are greeted by a huge room with 30 tables, a free buffet, live European music. They play poker, blackjack, baccarat, roulette. All information is duplicated in English and Chinese. Also in the city you can find other casinos with sonorous names: Bellagio, Stardust, MGM.

Night clubs

Rhythm and Blues is a prominent representative of Colombo nightclubs. He is one of the best clubs in the city. An interesting interior, a varied menu of drinks and snacks, and, most importantly, excellent music make it attractive for both local youth and tourists.

Club working hours: from 20:00 to 8:00, daily, except Sunday; on Sunday - from 20:00 to 00:00. Average check - 20 USD (3000 LKR).

How to get around the city

It is better to walk in the tourist areas. But if time in Colombo is limited, then use transport to get around. In particular, the most common type is the tuk-tuk (three-wheeled auto rickshaw). Also, online services for ordering a taxi are actively developed in the metropolis. And, of course, the cheapest way to travel will be buses, the network of which is very developed in the city. Moreover, there are both state and private. In general, public transport in Sri Lanka is very affordable.

The cherry on top of the transport cake in Colombo is the double-decker tourist bus, which runs on three routes (2 day and 1 night). Due to the appearance of such a bus in 2010, you can get acquainted with all the main attractions of the city in 3-4 hours. Find out prices and departure times.

Taxi. What features exist

Online Taxi

In the large metropolis of Colombo, 2 online taxi ordering services are actively developed:

Moreover, in Pickme you can order tuk-tuks and even minivans. And Uber is different in that you can pay for the trip in cash, and also deviate a little from the planned route (of course, for an additional fee).

The prices are approximately the same. For example, with the Pickme service, it will cost 2 USD (315 LKR) to get from the Fort to the Independence Square by car, and 7 USD (1100 LKR) by minivan (10 people). And with Uber - from 2 to 3 USD (from 300 to 500 LKR), depending on the class of the car.

Knock Knock

A convenient alternative to taxis are tuk-tuk, masterly maneuvering in any traffic jam. You can catch one anywhere in the city. There are both private and state-owned SLTDAs (Tourist Friendly Tuk Tuks).

Choose a tuk-tuk with the inscription “taxi-meter”, then the payment will go according to the meter. If there is no counter, be sure to negotiate the amount in advance, and even bargain. Average cost of 1 km - 0.3 USD (50 LKR).

Traveling in a tuk-tuk is less comfortable than in a taxi, and the number of people you can take on board is only 2.

Trams

Trams are planned to be launched in Colombo by 2019. While we are waiting.

Buses

Colombo has a well-developed city bus network. Moreover, both public (SLTB) and private runs. There are practically no differences in the fare, perhaps private ones are newer and more comfortable. You cannot find cheaper transport in Colombo - for 0.15 USD (20 LKR) you can travel the whole city.

To get on the bus, wait for him at the bus stop, or vote on the road. And be ready to fly into it like a bullet. The fare is paid at the entrance to the conductor. Stops are possible on demand, for this pull the rope with a bell, which is located under the ceiling.

Transport rental

A liter of gasoline in Colombo - 0.6 USD (95 LKR). Compared to European ones, Sri Lankan gas stations look rather shabby, but I didn't even figure out how to use the dispenser the first time. Fortunately, at many gas stations there is a gas station who will help to do everything and the money is paid to him.

Having once tried to drive a rented car around the city, I realized that this is a troublesome business - I have to look for parking places, and on the streets, except for large avenues, there are practically no pockets. Among the undoubted advantages is the air conditioner, which is very important in the midday heat.

There are both local and international car rental companies in Colombo. The cost of a simple car, for example, Suzuki Alto for a month - 300 USD (45,000 LKR), for a week - 100 USD (15,000 LKR). You can see the options. Price for a car with a driver - 30 USD (4,500 LKR) per day + petrol.

As exotic, try to rent a tuk-tuk. It is easy to operate, and the price is less - 18 USD (2700 LKR) per day. You must leave a deposit of 150 USD (23,000 USD).

Mandatory requirement to you - the presence of international rights of category B.

Colombo - holidays with children

Be sure to go to the Dehiwala Zoological Garden. Playgrounds, slides can be found in any city, but such a variety of fauna, only here.

High school students may be interested in visiting the National Museum, which houses various artifacts of ancient times, as well as items from the era of great discoveries.

If we talk about the beach, then with your children go to Mount Lavinia, where in the vast expanses you can organize a picnic, sunbathe, swim.

Hey! Nice hotels in Colombo Is not only a place where you can relax and spend the night near Colombo airport after a flight to Sri Lanka. Bandaranaike Airport is the main international airport in Sri Lanka, so almost all tourists spend some time here waiting for a return flight from the resorts and beaches of Ceylon. Finding a comfortable hotel in Colombo close to the airport is very important during any independent travel, especially when there is a clear plan or route, as we had.

It does not hurt to have a firm hotel reservation for the first night in Sri Lanka and when traveling spontaneously to this exotic country when there is no exact travel schedule. Moreover, the Bandaranaike airport is located near the very big city Sri Lanka Colombo, where many consider it necessary to call, as well as next to resort town Negombo, on the beaches of which you can spend a couple of days if you wish.

Therefore, today I will share with you my selection of the best rated and reviewed hotels in Colombo, which are worth keeping in mind when traveling to Sri Lanka. Also, my article will be useful to those travelers who still want to just spend the night in a good hotel near Colombo airport after arriving in Sri Lanka or before leaving home.

I'll start with a little explanation of why it is so important to book a good hotel near Colombo Airport in advance:

  • As a rule, the beginning of a trip to Sri Lanka completely depends on the flight schedule of the aircraft, or rather on the time of its arrival in Ceylon.
  • Very often tourists arrive in Colombo at night, having made one or two transfers before, and at the same time they are already very tired.

Agree, the best solution in this case, when fatigue has already accumulated after the flight, will be to go to the hotel and get a good night's sleep before you start to conquer Sri Lanka. The same decision will be relevant for returning home, when your planes take off early in the morning, it is easier to first rest and then arrive at the airport on an organized transfer from the hotel. Therefore, it is very important to know in advance about where to spend the night in Colombo and book a suitable hotel for yourself.

Hotels near the railway station may be needed for those who start their travels with a tour of Colombo or arrive in the evening, and then prefer to take a ride. This is a very exotic, unforgettable way to experience the culture of Sri Lanka. Travelers should keep in mind that the country's main railway station, Fort Colombo, is located in the center of Colombo city.

Hikkaduwa is a "mecca" for divers and young lovers of nightclub life. This is one of the most popular resorts on the island with a well-developed tourist infrastructure and a magnificent wide beach. Unawatuna is a small fishing village located in a beautiful blue lagoon on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, protected from the monsoons by a double coral reef.

In 2004, the Discovery Channel ranked Unawatuna Beach among the top ten in the world.

Swimming here is pleasant and safe, as the sea is only six meters deep and the water temperature is high throughout the year. But this resort is mainly chosen by people looking for privacy and a relaxing holiday, rather than chic hotels and nightclubs. The main thing here is beach vacation... Children usually don't come here with children, as the hotel infrastructure is very poorly developed.

Divers will be able to see beautiful reefs in Unawatuna with beautiful colorful fish and sea turtles, as well as sunken ships, one of which is the British steamer "Rangoon", which was wrecked 100 years ago. Eco-tourism is very developed in Unawatuna, as there are many hiking trails in the tropical jungle and the beautiful Kottawa Rainforest Sanctuary is located nearby. Also nearby is the stone temple of Yatagala Rajamaha Vihara, which was built 2300 years ago. And just 5 kilometers away is the ancient Galle Fort.

Colombo- This is the unofficial capital of Sri Lanka (official Sri Jayawardenepura-Kotte). The city is located on the west coast near the mouth of the Kelani River, where the President's residence is located. This millionaire city has long become the de facto capital of the island for the inhabitants of Sri Lanka.

Colombo is of particular value for tourists, as for many decades it has been of great interest among connoisseurs of exotic unique nature. This city is chosen by fans of sightseeing holidays, since there are few beaches here, and all of them are practically devoid of infrastructure. Mostly in Colombo you will not find inexpensive good hotels as even the cheapest guesthouse will cost you $ 25 per room. In the most expensive hotels, such as Taj Samudra, Hilton, Trans Asia, Lanka Oberoi, you will have to pay from $ 500 per room and above. There are no beach hotels in Colombo and the nearest resort Matsnt Lavinia, where you can sunbathe and swim in the ocean, is located to the south (a couple of kilometers from the city).

Therefore, tourists choose Colombo only as a temporary rest point, which is limited only to sightseeing and shopping trips.

Bentota is the most romantic resort located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, in the Galle region. In addition to beautiful beaches, there are many interesting places such as: turtle sanctuary, Buddhist ruins temple complex 12th century - Galapata Vihara. This resort is known for its palm wine as well aquatic species sports: diving and surfing.

The beach, located on a long sandy spit, is one of the most beautiful in the world, so it is a favorite destination for newlyweds who want to spend the most romantic Honeymoon... Expensive hotels offer the highest level of service, while sparsely crowded beaches offer calm relaxation and comfort. Here, a quiet beach vacation can be combined with an active one. For beginner divers, Bentota is ideal place, since clear water, where there are practically no currents, allows you to see the most beautiful coral reefs and various representatives of flora and fauna Indian Ocean... Many people choose this resort for families with children.

Wadduwa Is a small quiet resort located 35 kilometers from Colombo. There are plantations of coconut palms, rubber and cinnamon. The area produces palm wine and vinegar, as well as coconut fiber products. Beach lovers choose Wadduwa, as there are wonderful sandy beaches, the width of which reaches 60 meters.

Since all hotels are built on the beach far from each other, guests are provided with maximum peace and comfort. This is one of best places for rest and relaxation, as this resort has many spas, wellness centers and other medical institutions offering various Ayurvedic treatments, healing treatments, as well as yoga and meditation. This resort is focused on beach and wellness holidays.

Koggala is located in the south of the island and is perfect for a relaxing holiday. There is a beautiful beach, which is considered one of the best in Sri Lanka, and which stretches for 5 kilometers along the Indian Ocean. The unique nature of Koggala, golden sand on the beaches, coral reefs, a large freshwater lake evergreen rainforests attract tourists from all over the world here.

Active rest on Koggale is intertwined with active and sightseeing. At the resort you can rent a bicycle, a catamaran, a boat for rent, go diving, windsurfing, sailing, boat trips watching whales and dolphins. Holidays with children on Koggala will be interesting and varied. The dry season here lasts from early May to late October.

Kalutara is located in the southwest of Ceylon on the Kalu Ganga River. Previously, it was a center for the trade in various spices and spices, but today it is a modern resort town with great opportunities for various water sports and excellent beach holidays. This resort offers windsurfing, water skiing, kite surfing, spearfishing, diving and more. And also Kalutara offers interesting excursion along the Kalu-Ganga River, which is covered with impenetrable mangrove thickets. A large number of expensive hotels and clubs are located here. This is a great resort for family vacation with kids.

The main historical attraction of the city is a huge round Buddhist temple Kalutara Vihara, erected in 1960 in the south of the city near the bridge. Inside there are 72 paintings depicting the life of Buddha, as well as a large panoramic window from which you can see the entire city and the river.

Halle is the third largest resort city in Sri Lanka, which is located in the southwest of the island and is considered one of the main tourist regions of the country. But meanwhile, beach holidays are underdeveloped here, and the closest regions where you can sunbathe and swim in the ocean are Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa, which are located 5 and 10 kilometers from the city.

Halle is dominated by sightseeing vacation, therefore, most tourists come here for a few days in order to join the culture of the Sri Lankans. The main attraction of the city is a 17th century Dutch fort, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In the very center of the island, among the evergreen vegetation is the beautiful Sigiriya Mountain, on the top of which the city is built. " Lion rock”Is one of the main attractions of Ceylon and is protected by the world organization UNESCO. This city is surrounded by beautiful gardens with fountains and is located as if between the paws, throat and jaws of a lion to which steps lead. If you are in Sri Lanka, then Sigiriya is a must-see. But to do this, you will have to overcome the difficult climb along narrow stairs and go over the suspension bridge over the abyss.

Summing up, we can say that all cities have a certain resort value for tourists.... But the most the best resorts are: southern, western and central cities located on the coast of the Indian Ocean, and, therefore, among them we can name such as: Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa and Wadduwa.

For a relaxing holiday, tourists choose Koggala and Bentota, and those who want to enjoy beach holidays, sports and nightlife to their fullest - Hikkaduwa. Northern and eastern regions cannot boast of a well-developed tourist and hotel infrastructure, so usually visitors make an independent voyage to this part of the country in order to explore the main attractions of the northeast of the island.

Advise which resorts are better to pay attention to if you want to see historical places to be able to swim, and to have restaurants around or a little life to walk in the evening. Huge parties and so on are not of interest, but places like Marawila where the Olenka hotel is located, where there is nothing at all, are also somehow not impressive, because from the hotel to the center of Marawila on a tuktuk there is some way to go.

Pay attention to the Kani Lanka Resort & Spa in Kalutara. Relatively not far from Colombo, outwardly I liked the hotel (we stopped there during an excursion to Galle for fellow travelers). And next to the highway is a huge Buddhist complex. I highly recommend taking a tour with excursions around the center of the island already included - we did so and were very pleased, because from the coast to go, for example, to Kandy very far. In Colombo itself, it is worth including the National Museum in the program, you can briefly stop by the Petta market (not for the nervous), see the Presidential Palace (only outside, you cannot take pictures). A truly stunning place - the Buddhist temple of Kelaniya Rajamaha Vihara, unique painting, pure energy. But the temple is about 20 kilometers from Colombo. My husband and I stayed at Mount Lavini, which is wonderful but not beachfront. But nearby Colombo - restaurants, shops, bustling life. If the second time I go to this coast of Sri Lanka, then to Kani Lanka.

I advise, of course, not maravila, where in fact there is nothing of entertainment, but at the expense of non-gombo, think about it. Negombo is a nearby settlement from the airport (20 minutes by taxi), 40 km from Colombo (1 hour by public transport). This city has a large number of restaurants, cafes with European and local exotic cuisine, hotels, guesthouses with evening animation programs and a large number of souvenir shops with perfectly reasonable prices. If you still want a vibrant nightlife or shopping for the whole day, Colombo is always there.
Negombo is a small, beautiful, very colorful fishing village located on the ocean, where every early morning local fishermen return from night fishing on their exotic catamarans and deliver the freshest, tastiest and cheapest seafood on the island. In addition, Negombo is geographically located on the island, which is very convenient for starting any excursion programs or travel in any direction for any number of days. If you have any questions, please contact, I will be happy to help.

Hi. you can get to sri lanka from moscow only by katkrami, emirates and another company through abu dhabi (I don’t remember the name). but from personal experience I know that Cathars are the cheapest, unless Emirates gives any super special offers (but this does not happen in any airline during the season). I think, or rather I know for sure, after January 14, ticket prices will decrease, tk. the New Year's excitement will take place. when are you going?

Hi. new year tours to all countries are always very expensive. airlines, accordingly, also raise prices during this period. But there is always a way out - you can only buy an air ticket for December 30 to Sri Lanka and on January 13 back to Moscow directly from your chosen airline via the Internet. here, having arrived in sri lanka, you can rent accommodation for this period and choose for yourself excursion tour... and all this will cost you a lot cheaper. if you need help write to me in a personal.

Negombo has a very decent club Dolfin 3. You will not regret it. Food and grounds are great! Before that we rested in Taj ex - one name ..... Take a mixed tour right away. If you are flying in the Emirates - on board, ask for a passenger card. Fill it out and you will receive all the news in the future and follow the discounts. We have already flown an SL for 32 thousand. And we fly with them in the UAE. Very convenient connection with flight 132. There 1.5 hours in Dubai. Back 5 hours, but it is imperceptible. While you walk around the DF and eat for free, do not forget (at the Inf counter they will tell you which cafe. In Colombo, chain stores are not expensive, and things are very decent for any age and weight.

The purpose of this article is to help those who are going to go to Sri Lanka on their own, but do not feel ready for such an adventure. Thoughts about whether or not to go on their own are very often decided in favor of buying a tour. The reason for this, as a rule, is the argument that the arrival in Sri Lanka is too early. Many believe that they will have to wait until dawn at the airport, many are trite to be afraid to plunge into the nightlife of Sri Lanka. I assure you, there is absolutely no one to be afraid of on the island. At least, people should not be afraid for sure, it is better to read the article about snakes in Sri Lanka, much more reason to think about this circumstance, although with sufficient attention from your side, this problem will not concern you in any way. We decided to make a small overview of the hotels closest to the airport. So, if you do not want to go somewhere at night, or your return flight leaves too late, it makes sense to turn your attention to the following hotels. All of them are within 5 km of the Central Exit / Entrance to Bandaranaike International Airport.

(note: First, hotels located, well, very close)

Hotel Goodwood Plaza, Katunayake

The closest hotel, located 700 meters from the airport, can be reached on foot if necessary. Approximate cost per season: from $ 50 per night. Ramada Katunayake Colombo International Airport

Full Moon Garden Hotel, Katunayake

A small hotel with cozy rooms, located opposite the previous hotel, but it costs less than its neighbor, prices per night from $ 50 and more.

Motel Sakura, Katunayake

Located 2 km away from the airport entrance. The rooms are somewhat shabby, but they have everything you need to relax before or after your flight. The cost is less than that of all considered.

Tamarind Tree Hotel

located in the village of Yatiyana, 2.6 km from the airport. Somewhat expensive, costs $ 116 per day. True, it has a good infrastructure, a large swimming pool. Tourists live in it not only for the sake of one night, it has many guests who spend their entire vacation here in rest and relaxation.

The Wallawwa, Kotugoda

At a distance of 3.5 kilometers from the airport, there is a small club hotel completely immersed in tropical greenery, but the cost of this hotel is the largest of all previously announced. The price per night for a room in this hotel ranges from $ 165 and up.

In principle, this is all that Sri Lanka can offer today to those tourists who want to either relax upon arrival, or be a step away, or even walk from the airport, in order to avoid possible problems. If you are going on a beach holiday in Negombo or the Waikkal resort, you will not need an intermediate hotel for an overnight stay, because these resorts are located within a 20 km radius from the airport. In this case, it would be more logical to agree with the hotel representatives to meet you upon arrival, or order a taxi at the counter at the airport. The road to the resort of Negombo or Vaikala from the airport will cost no more than $ 10.
