Bed and Breakfast Big Island

The Åland Islands have a long tradition of caring for travelers. Along the old post road there were inns where tired travelers could sleep and refresh themselves. Today's visitors move much faster, and the choice of places to stay along the route is more varied.

Most hotels are in Mariehamn, but some are located in the countryside and archipelago: two four-star hotels on the Åland Islands - Havsvidden in Yeta and Silverskär in Saltvik, as well as several three- and two-star hotels, such as Bastö in Finström, Elvira in Ekerö or Gullviva on Brando. There are plans to build the Smakbyn Hotel in Sunda.

There are some very nice and quaint hotels and bed and breakfasts on the Åland Islands. Among the hotels located in a historical setting is the Hotel Enigheten in the old courthouse and inn of the 18th century in the settlement of Degerby on Vöglö. You can also feel the atmosphere of antiquity combined with modern comfort at the Björnhufvud hotels in Ekerø, Kvarnbo in Saltvik and Amalia in Lemland.

Hotel Kvarnbo, built in the 80s years XIX century, has interesting story. The hotel is located opposite the Saltviks kyrka church, and modern archaeologists believe that there was major center trade during the early Iron Age and the Viking Age in 500-1000 AD. When the future hotel owners Ella and Martin bought an old house his relative, he was in very bad condition.

Today, the main part of the house, with an area of 540 sq.m., has been completely restored. The kitchen, dining room and eight large rooms have been lovingly renovated. The interiors and colors are consistent with the building's era, although it is equipped with all modern amenities - each room has a toilet and shower.

The main idea was that guests would not just spend time here, but could enjoy it. Guests sit and have long conversations in the evenings on the veranda or in the dining room by the fireplace.

Ella is a sommelier and organizes beer, wine and champagne tastings. All equipment is locally produced. The strongest taste experience was caused by tasting the world's oldest champagne, found in the wreck of a ship that sank in Åland waters in 2010.

Ella's other passion is music. Musical events are organized here every summer. Also worth a look is the fully stocked early 20th workshop, which has a bar, pinball and old bicycles that Martin restores.

Although summer is the most favorable season, many people prefer to come to Åland Islands also at other times of the year. The following hotels are open all year round or at least until late autumn:

Hotel PellasGästhem in Lappo Brändø and Hostel JurmoVandrarhem in Jurmo Brändø, Degerby Mat & Café in Vöglö, Hotel Antonsgästhem on the island of Cökar, Hotel Djurviks in Jomala, Hotel GodbyGästhem and Hostel GodbyVandrarhem in Gudby, Nybonds boarding house in Sund, Sandösunds camping in Vårdø , Amalia in Lemdande, Hotel AnderssonsochGranbergs in Eckerø.

Bed and Breakfast hotels are an ideal option for those who prefer not to spend extra money on a room in a regular hotel, but still expect normal conditions of comfort and service.

The Bed and Breakfast (bed and breakfast) or B&B system is very popular in many countries of Western Europe.

This is actually one of the most common types of temporary residence in France.

To refer to Bed and Breakfast hotels, the abbreviation B&B is mainly used. B&B hotels are small, family-run hotels that offer a full level of service plus home-cooked meals.

The UK is considered the founder of the Bed and Breakfast system. It was the representatives of Foggy Albion who were the first to come up with a name for a simple and convenient way accommodation while traveling. However, after several decades the new kind temporary residence migrated throughout European continent, including to France.

In Bed and Breakfast hotels, the guest always has the opportunity to count on a comfortable minimum of services. These services actually consist of sleeping place(bed) and breakfast (breakfast). B&B hotels, as a rule, have a standard classification - from 2 to 5 stars. However, it should be taken into account that most hotels in this system do not have any status at all, but at the same time they do not at all represent homeless shelters.

The Bed and Breakfast system is a type of temporary accommodation in city or country private houses, where breakfast is included in the price. Accommodation in a B&B outside the city costs about 30 euros per person per night and about 40 euros for half board. “Room for the night” - an ordinary bedroom without a TV and with a shared toilet will cost 20 euros. But prices also tend to vary depending on the area and season.

Most B&Bs have simple accommodations, but they have a natural French flair. Typically a B&B offers lunch for around 5 euros and dinner for around 15 euros. In these hotels, coziness, comfort and cleanliness in most cases are much higher than standard. This is due, first of all, to the fact that a unified system for evaluating Bed and Breakfast has not yet been developed.

Home distinctive feature B&B hotels have a management structure and a small number of rooms. In world hotel practice, the main requirement for those hotels that want to be considered a Bed and Breakfast is management. The hotel must be managed exclusively by the owner of the house or members of his family. If a B&B hotel receives professional management management, it is considered only as a mini-hotel or guest house.

The advantages of the Bed and Breakfast system lie not only in the price of the rooms. Often, B&B owners offer their clients a lot of additional services, starting with excursions around sights of Paris and ending with learning crafts. In addition, each B&B is practically an exclusive museum. Here you can see and appreciate not only the design skills of the hotel owners, but also get acquainted with local traditions and rituals.

Embroidery, figurines, tools and cooking style - in many B&B hotels, the way of life shows national identity much more deeply than various educational television programs. Currently, the largest concentration of Bed and Breakfast hotels (Europe) is located in the UK, Spain, Italy, Greece and of course in France. In total, there are over 50 thousand Bed and Breakfast hotels on the planet.

Very often, B&B hotels are located in private houses, the owners of which rent out some rooms only during the favorable season. This method of accommodation at the resort is available, including in Ukraine and Russia. However, it should be taken into account that the comfort and services in Ukrainian and Russian B&B hotels are significantly inferior to their European counterparts, and prices are often even higher.

Over the past ten years, for fans budget travel Guides to Bed and Breakfast hotels are constantly published. There are hundreds of resources on this type of temporary residence on an ongoing basis on the Internet, the most famous of which are agoda.com and booking.com.

Bed and Breakfast Villa des Princes Paris

The Bed and Breakfast Villa des Princes is a popular B&B hotel in the capital, located on the left bank of the Seine.

Bed and Breakfast (B&B) literally translates from English as bed and breakfast, but in essence it is the provision of temporary housing for students, business travelers, tourists and other visitors.

That is, this is one of the varieties hotel business, which, in turn, is divided into several categories.

  • Homestay. Most often, owners want to rent out one or more rooms in their house or apartment in order to receive additional income. They usually don't want too much publicity or advertising. If you have friends who are not averse to “letting in tenants,” you can start organizing a search for clients. In this case, you advertise, communicate with people and receive commissions as an intermediary. Running a B&B with a homestay can bring in a good income, especially if you expand your "accommodation base" and create a reservation system.
  • Private boarding house. If the house is privately owned, the owner and his family live in it, and there are also 4-5 (but not more than 6) guest rooms, then we can talk about a private boarding house. Here it is already necessary to obtain documents of an individual entrepreneur. Such a boarding house, as a rule, has a sign, and for the owners it is a job and their main income.
  • Private hotel - B&B Inn. This category includes private houses with host accommodation, which have 7-10 or more guest rooms. In this case, it is necessary to comply with all laws and government regulations, compliance with regulated fire safety and sanitary control rules. Preferably - a lot of advertising and a beautiful sign. Breakfast in private hotels is usually offered to residents as part of the room price. There is a “family” atmosphere of the house here, but the rooms are located “autonomously” from the owners. Such B&B Inn can be opened in historical center cities, near clinics or universities (depending on who you identify as your potential clients). Clients can be tourists, businessmen, couples, friends and families of students and so on.

What is required for organization

It is clear that you need to purchase everything you need for normal living (bed linen, towels, detergents, Appliances, tables, chairs, bedside tables, cutlery, etc.). But, besides this, if you are going to convert a residential premises into a B&B, carefully look around to see if any repairs or even reconstruction of the premises, interior and exterior are needed.

“Bed and breakfast” (English - bed & breakfast, B&B), that is, translated as “bed and breakfast”, is another accommodation option that is popular in many countries of the world, especially in Europe. Difficulties.net has already examined in detail the features of European hotels and apartment rentals, but now it’s the turn of B&B.

A bed and breakfast is essentially a private mini-hotel owned by one owner (family). This is, as a rule, a private apartment (house) with several rooms in which guests live. At the same time, part of the apartment’s territory has been turned into public space - the living room and kitchen, as well as often a bathroom with toilet, are common to all B&B guests. Basic services in this case can be called the provision of overnight accommodation (“bed”) and breakfast.

Under no circumstances should bed and breakfast be confused with a hostel., which by definition is a dormitory (in most cases you pay to sleep in the same room with other residents; of course, both the kitchen and the bathroom are shared). In a B&B you get your own room and quite often your own bathroom, for less than the price of a hotel room. In addition, the owners of bed and breakfast mini-hotels, as a rule, fight for customers and create a truly homely atmosphere in their apartments.

Pros and cons of Bed & breakfast

It depends on everyone, but for me there are many more advantages than disadvantages to bed and breakfast accommodation, and lately I have increasingly opted for them when traveling around Europe.

Owners list their properties in the same booking systems as hotels (there are also entire websites dedicated to searching just for “bed and breakfast”). Accordingly, you have before your eyes complete information about the conditions of accommodation, services and services, as well as reviews from guests who have already been there.

In the vast majority of cases in Europe, a “bed and breakfast” is a well-renovated apartment (house) prepared specifically for rental. This is a big plus, because, for example, in the case of Airbnb, you may well find yourself in a rather unkempt owner’s apartment, from where only a couple of days ago the owner removed some of his things, deciding to make extra money from tourists. Unlike Airbnb, bed and breakfast does not require a deposit for your stay (at least, I have never seen one).

Breakfast is served at the bed and breakfast in the common dining room by the owners, or you can whip it up yourself by taking the food you are entitled to (since you paid for breakfast) in the refrigerator. In this regard, a bed and breakfast differs little from a standard hotel: usually a choice of tea, coffee, juice, toast, pastries, eggs or sausages. There are a lot of variations here, for example, the owner of your B&B can even send you to the nearest cafe, where you can choose a drink + croissant or something more substantial for a certain amount.

As a rule, B&B owners themselves clean the rooms after the guests leave, or some of them hire someone from outside to clean.

Most the best option– if the B&B you want to book has only 1-2 rooms. There is a good chance that you will be alone during this period, without fellow guests, especially if you are only staying for one or two nights. This means that you will have the entire spacious apartment at your disposal, which gives a completely different feeling than a hotel.

The only downside is the need to “check notes” with the owner of the mini-hotel before your arrival(since he can't sit and wait for you 24 hours like at a 24/7 hotel reception), so in Europe be sure to have his local number handy.

One more moment. Many B&B owners prefer to receive payment for their room in cash (not everyone wants to pay taxes in full, even in Europe), so it’s better to have cash with you.

In general, this is an excellent option at a lower price to get a more spacious and comfortable room than in a hotel, often in the very historical center of European cities, with breakfast and often with a warm welcome from the owners. Still, in a bed and breakfast, the reception of guests is not as intense as in a hotel or hostel, and this type of accommodation itself involves “home hospitality”. Usually the owner will also be happy to tell you about all the interesting things that are around and give you directions around the city.
