“Due to the inability to fulfill its obligations to tourists and customers under contracts for the sale of tourism products, Southern Cross Travel LLC is forced to announce the suspension of its activities. The suspension of activities is associated with a strong drop in demand for the tourism product against the backdrop of the bankruptcy of a number of the largest tour operators,” it says in the operator's message.
"For tourists outside Russian Federation"Southern Cross Travel LLC" will provide all possible assistance and moral support for tourist vouchers, including upon returning to their homeland," the message says.
Up to 10 thousand clients of a tour operator may be abroad
Up to 10 thousand clients of the bankrupt tour operator Southern Cross may be abroad. ITAR-TASS was informed about this by Rostourism press secretary Irina Shchegolkova, emphasizing that this is only preliminary information.
“It is already clear that almost no one has paid return tickets. In addition, tourists may have problems with hotels,” said Shchegolkova. She added that on Thursday, September 11, the formation of a register of affected tourists will begin. On Thursday afternoon there will be a meeting of the Turpomosch supervisory board, at which a decision will be made on the evacuation of Southern Cross clients.
Shchegolkova also reported that, according to preliminary information, up to 28 thousand trips to future dates were sold through the bankrupt travel agency.
The company has sold tours until March next year
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian Union of Travel Industry, Irina Tyurina, said that about 5.8 thousand of the company’s tourists are abroad.
“Mostly tourists are in Greece, Italy, China and some other countries,” Tyurina clarified.
About 12.3 thousand more tours, according to her, were purchased for subsequent dates, the depth of sales is until March of next year. Tyurina clarified that not all of these tours are fully paid for.
The tour operator’s financial guarantees are insured by the large company RESO-Garantiya, however, since the amount is only 100 million rubles, most likely, “tourists will only be able to receive part of the compensation,” Tyurina believes.
Tourist Assistance has not yet received any requests from Southern Cross clients.
Clients of the Southern Cross tour operator, which suspended its activities, have not yet contacted Turpomosch, Deputy Director of this association Alexander Osaulenko told ITAR-TASS.
“There have been no requests from their tourists yet. We have not yet seen an official request from the company either. I think we will have all the information tomorrow,” Osaulenko said, adding that Turpomosch was informed of the possible suspension of the tour operator’s activities.
