Train description

Trains ran regularly between Sukhumi and Moscow until 1992, when services ceased due to the war between the Abkhazians and Georgians. After its end, Abkhazia took a long time to come to its senses; its economic and political state was in a deep crisis. The railroad tracks were abandoned and fell into disrepair.

The first train again ran along this road after its major repairs, in the fall of 2004. At first there were only two trailer cars that were part of the Moscow-Adler train. But then the obvious demand for the route prompted the management of Russian Railways to launch a full-fledged train 305C Moscow - Sukhum.

Feedback from passengers was mostly positive, which is why the flight still exists. Two or four trains of ten to fifteen cars each run along it, depending on the season. You can buy tickets for seats of different categories: SV, reserved seat or compartment. The movement is year-round. From May to the end of October the train runs daily, the rest of the year on odd dates.

Passengers cross the border without disembarking from the carriages. On the Russian side, customs control takes place at the Veselaya station and lasts an hour, on the Abkhaz side - at the Tsandrypsh station and lasts half an hour. The train is equipped with dry closets and air conditioning.

Prices

Ticket prices are determined by seasonal coefficients and may change over time by decision of Russian Railways management. As of January 2018, the price of a ticket for the Moscow - Sukhum train is: SV around 9,500 rubles, compartment - from 4,700 rubles, seats in a reserved seat - about 3,000 rubles. Prices must be clarified on the Russian Railways website or directly at the box office upon purchase.

Advantages

  • There is no alternative. You can get from the capital to Abkhazia without a transfer only by train 305C Moscow - Sukhum. Reviews from people who drove their own cars are very mixed and often sad. After all, this is due to the inevitability of traveling almost 1,800 kilometers by car in the summer, with children, along serpentine roads, spending up to several hours at the border, and beingware of Caucasian reckless drivers and greedy traffic cops. Planes do not fly to Abkhazia. The bus from Moscow runs haphazardly and the journey takes almost 30 hours.
  • Easy border crossing. The inspection and verification of documents takes place quite quickly and without leaving the carriage.
  • Polite guides.
  • Air conditioning and dry closets. These are the most important attributes of a trip to the south in the summer; without them, stuffiness and along the sea can turn the trip into flour.
  • Convenient schedule. Departure from Moscow in the evening, there is time to settle in and have dinner before bed. The train arrives in Sukhum in the morning, the vacationer will easily have time to find accommodation or stay in an already booked accommodation, go to the beach, and take a walk around the city.

Flaws

We cannot ignore the shortcomings of the Moscow - Sukhumi train. Reviews from dissatisfied passengers are a subjective thing, as are laudatory ratings. But a person who decides to go along this route better be prepared in advance for such possible inconveniences as:

  • Not very new linen and shabby condition of the carriages. But this is a matter of chance; the train includes both relatively old and new cars.
  • Sometimes air conditioning systems break down. At the border, air conditioning is turned off throughout the train.
  • High prices in the restaurant, but this is already the norm for trains.
  • Lots of noisy companies and restless children. On the one hand, the disadvantage is obvious, but on the other hand, it is inevitable. After all, family trips to the south are often made purely for the sake of the health and joy of the children.

The history of railway communication in Abkhazia dates back to the 30s of the last century. In 1940, the first section from Enguri station to Sukhum, along with a branch line to Tkuarchal, was opened, and in 1942 the construction of railway tracks from Sukhum to Adler was completed.

From this time on, direct railway communication began to operate along the entire Black Sea branch, which in 1949 became part of the Transcaucasian Railway.

The modern history of railway communication in Abkhazia begins in 2002. It was this year that an electric train was launched on the Sukhum – Sochi route.

With the help of Russian companies, massive restoration of railway tracks began in 2004. During the repairs, the movement of electric trains to Sochi was suspended.

On September 10, 2004, after the completion of repair work, the first long-distance train from Sukhum to Moscow traveled by rail. It was difficult to call it a full-fledged train; these were several cars that at Veseloye station were included in the fast train No. 75/76. Nevertheless, a start had been made.

The Sukhumi railway station project was completed by architects Lola and Levan Mushkudiani. The station was designed in the style characteristic of that time - the Stalinist Empire style.

The railway station and seaport in the city of Sochi were built in the same style. I really love the building of the railway station in Sochi and, in my opinion, if the Sukhumi station is restored, it will not be inferior to the Sochi station.

In the 50s of the last century, Sukhumi Station was considered large and could accommodate up to 1000 passengers at a time. In addition, it had separate waiting rooms for commuter and long-distance trains, and separate exits to the platforms were an innovation at that time and were recommended for use in other cities of the Soviet Union.

The building itself was faced with marble and granite, the windows and doors were made of chestnut, and the floor of the station restaurant was covered with parquet. Unfortunately, little remains of its former greatness. The building is completely abandoned, in some places overgrown with figs and other plants.

In 2016, an attempt was made to reconstruct the station, which began with roof repairs. The building was surrounded by a fence, but due to a lack of funds, repairs were suspended.

At the moment, only railway ticket sales offices located in a building next to the station are functioning.
