Prohibited items for transportation on an airplane. What you can and cannot take on board an airplane in hand luggage. What you can and cannot carry in airplane luggage in Russia

From February 15, 2018, Aeroflot began strictly checking the size, quantity and weight hand luggage. The hand luggage of all passengers is now not only counted and weighed, but also placed in a calibrator - a measuring frame.

Depending on the airport, they may be checked several times: at check-in, before passport control and at the departure gate.

According to the airline's explanations, this measure was introduced due to complaints from passengers that hand luggage was being passed through unchecked and there was not enough space for things on board.

Latest changes to Aeroflot's hand luggage rules in 2018

  • checking the weight, dimensions and amount of hand luggage for all passengers;
  • the dimensions of hand luggage were increased by 5 cm - up to 55x40x25 cm;
  • in hand luggage you can carry musical instruments up to 135 cm in total dimensions and a guitar of any size;
  • a camera, laptop, book and umbrella are now included in the main (and not additional, as was previously the case) hand luggage and are also subject to weighing.

In addition to the main piece of hand luggage weighing 10-15 kg and dimensions 55x40x25 cm, you can carry on board free of charge:

  • a backpack weighing 5 kg and measuring no more than 80 cm in the sum of three dimensions, or a handbag, or a briefcase;
  • one sealed duty free bag measuring no more than 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions;
  • bouquet of flowers;
  • outerwear;
  • baby food for the duration of the flight;
  • suit in a suitcase;
  • a cradle or restraint device for children under 2 years of age or a folding stroller weighing no more than 7 kg and dimensions no more than 42x50x20 cm;
  • medications required during the flight;
  • crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, folding wheelchair.

A laptop, camera, book and folding umbrella now need to be packed inside the main piece of hand luggage. You can put your phone in your pocket. The umbrella cane must be checked in as luggage.

You can put things in the frame on either side, but if the wheels or handle are sticking out, you will have to check them in as luggage (if you exceed the limit, you will have to pay extra). They can check at check-in, before passport control and before the boarding gate.

You can take free of charge in your hand luggage on board Aeroflot:

How many things can you check in for free at Aeroflot?

Aeroflot has a piece luggage system. 1PC or 2PC on a ticket means how many pieces of baggage of a certain weight you can check in. In business class you have two seats - 32 kg each, in Comfort and Economy Premium - two seats of 23 kg, in other Economy fares - one seat 23 kg.

Maximum dimensions for free luggage- 158 cm in the sum of length, width and height. Anything that does not fit in is checked in at excess baggage rates.

Is it possible to add up the weight and size of luggage?

If you are flying with your family, friend or colleague on the same ticket, you can combine the allowed weight of free baggage. That is, a husband and wife have the right to check in suitcases weighing 20 and 26 kilograms instead of two weighing 23 kilograms without additional payment, or distribute the weight in another way. But there is a limitation: each suitcase must be within 32 kg.

For two people, 158 + 158 = 316 cm is the sum of length, width and height. This means that you can check in one bag measuring 203 cm and a second bag measuring 113 cm free of charge in the luggage compartment. A bag larger than 203 cm cannot be shared.

How much does it cost to pay extra for overweight and oversized luggage at the airport?

Baggage that exceeds the free allowance in terms of the number of pieces, weight and dimensions is rented for an additional fee. On flights within Russia you will have to pay from 2,500 to 7,500 rubles, depending on what and how much is exceeded. For example, you will pay 2,500 rubles if you keep within 32 kg. Surcharge on international flights - from 50 to 200 euros. Baggage from 32 to 50 kg and more than 203 cm in the sum of three dimensions can only be transported by agreement with the airline.

In law Order of the Ministry of Transport of Russia dated June 28, 2007 No. 82 (as amended on January 14, 2019) “On approval of the Federal Aviation Rules” General rules air transport passengers, baggage, cargo and requirements for servicing passengers, shippers, consignees" (registered with the Ministry of Justice of Russia on September 27, 2007 No. 10186)
at any Russian airline You can carry up to 5 kg of things on board free of charge. There are carriers that allow you to take 10 or 15 kg.

As a rule, than more expensive ticket, the more things you can carry in the cabin. Typically, for economy class flights, one piece of hand luggage is provided, and for business class flights, two. But here everything depends on the carrier: some companies have their own standards for each fare, route, aircraft, while others have a single standard for everyone.

Dimensions are not specified in the law, so each carrier can set its own rules. Typically, bags with dimensions of 55 × 40 × 20 cm or with the sum of three dimensions equal to 115 cm are allowed on board. Such a suitcase will fit in the overhead luggage rack along with the hand luggage of other passengers.

You can also take a handbag, briefcase or backpack with things in excess of the norm. It is assumed that you will place them under the seat in front, so the permitted weight and dimensions may be less than for carry-on luggage. For example, up to 3 kg and no more than 80 cm in the sum of three dimensions.

Carefully read the rules on the company’s website: if the weight of free excess baggage is not indicated there, check this on the website or by phone.

Also, instead of an additional bag, briefcase or backpack, you can take for free:

  • bouquet of flowers;
  • outerwear;
  • baby food for the child during the flight;
  • suit in a suitcase (check weight and dimensions);
  • a device for carrying a child (cradle, chair, stroller) - provided that you are flying with a child and can fit these things on a shelf or under the seat;
  • medications, special dietary needs in the amount required for the duration of the flight;
  • crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, a folding wheelchair, if you can fit them in the cabin on a shelf or under the seat;
  • goods from Duty Free, if they are suitable in weight and dimensions and are sealed in a sealed bag (check weight and dimensions).

The basic rule: what you are going to take into the cabin must fit on a shelf or under the seat. Ask the carrier in advance how much excess hand luggage he will allow you to carry.

How to check hand luggage at the airport

If your hand luggage looks bulky, it will be weighed at the airport and the dimensions will be checked using a special frame. This is a plastic container or two walls that your suitcase should fit into. In this case, everything should fit in, including handles and wheels.

How much baggage can you carry on a plane?

Major carriers have established rules for the carriage of baggage on an airplane, which stipulate requirements for the size of checked luggage. The cargo is individually registered for each passenger. It is important to know the weight standards, which can vary greatly depending on the type of vessel and the specific air carrier. It is better to check the permitted dimensions on the company’s website.

In addition to weight, there is a quantitative assessment. For example, a bicycle will be regarded as one piece of luggage, and its dimensions and weight are not important. Some companies offer gradation by class, i.e. The more expensive the ticket, the more free cargo you can carry. If the suitcase exceeds the permissible limit, the excess can be paid separately. The rules for transporting baggage on an airplane contain a list of acceptable items that can be carried on the plane:

  • electronic gadgets: telephone, laptop, smartphone, camera;
  • money and documents;
  • warm clothes;
  • set of medicines;
  • inflatable pillow;
  • wet wipes;
  • food (you should not take highly crumbly and perishable foods).

Rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane

Items allowed to be carried on board are called hand luggage. The size of such luggage must not exceed the norm established by the airline's rules. A pressing question is how much does baggage cost on an airplane and whether it is necessary to pay separately for hand luggage. If the cargo carried on board does not exceed 10 kg, then no additional fee is charged for such baggage. As a rule, the price for reloading varies from 30 to 70 euros. Payment of the entire cost of excess volume can be made at the front desk.

There is a list of things that a passenger can put in the cabin for free:

  • women's handbag, briefcase;
  • cane;
  • wheelchair, crutches;
  • bouquet of flowers;
  • umbrella;
  • outerwear;
  • baby bassinet;
  • printed publications.

All these items do not need to be separately weighed and labeled. Regarding the transportation of oversized and non-standard items, for example, musical instruments, sports equipment, you should check with the carrier's airline managers in advance. In addition, you can take baby food on your flight, which you will need during the flight to feed your baby.

What not to take on a plane

Airplane baggage rules contain a list of prohibited items. An exception in many companies is the transportation of Duty Free store products: perfume, alcohol, cigarettes, drinks. All products must be sealed and packaged in the store itself or on board. Here is a small list of what is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage on an airplane:

  • manicure scissors, knives;
  • corkscrews;
  • blades, razors.
  • the new rule excludes any type of liquid (even water) if its volume exceeds 100 ml;
  • You also need to hand in cosmetics - creams, mascara;
  • You cannot carry weapons or their imitation with you;
  • jewelry and fragile items;
  • alcohol;
  • all types of gases.

Dimensions of hand luggage on an airplane

The dimensions of baggage carried on board are limited by the carrier's rules. The permissible dimensions for carrying luggage are the same in many countries. However, it is worth learning about all the nuances in advance so that during the inspection you do not lose your favorite items. Weight Limit hand luggage on an airplane cannot exceed 5 kg. For first and business class passengers, the norm is 7 kilograms (maximum).

Preparing for air travel involves packing suitcases and bags for the trip. Large ones will be called baggage and will fly in the luggage compartment of the plane. Baggage weight is limited and usually ranges from 20 kg to 23 kg. You will have to pay extra for excess weight. You will learn more about what you should not take on a plane in this article.

What is hand luggage?

But a small suitcase or bag with a length of 55 cm, a width of up to 20 cm and no higher than 40 cm will be called hand luggage. The dimensions of hand luggage are called the sum of three dimensions, which should not be more than 115 cm. The maximum weight of hand luggage is also limited. Each airline sets its own weight limits for hand luggage. Most airlines limit this weight to 6-8 kg. But Aeroflot allows 10 kg, but Royal Airlines allows hand luggage up to 12 kg.

To carry hand luggage, you can use almost anything that is convenient for you, even a plastic bag. But it is best to use small suitcases, sports bags, and backpacks. The main thing is that all this does not go beyond the permissible dimensions. If a suitcase or bag has wheels, then they are also taken into account when determining the permissible size. But the backpack is very convenient because its dimensions can be changed due to the side straps designed to tighten the backpack. The main thing is that the height of the backpack is less than 55 cm.

In economy class, only one piece of hand luggage is allocated, but passengers flying first and business class are entitled to two seats. To reduce the pre-flight screening time, you need to know what you cannot take in your hand luggage on the plane.

Baggage check and stowage

Hand luggage is checked at the check-in counter. This is where weighing and inspection takes place. The passenger goes through the frame, and the items go through the scanner. If necessary, things can be inspected. Unlike luggage, hand luggage is searched in the presence of the passenger. Security services can inspect luggage without the presence of a passenger. There are special forms to check the dimensions of your luggage. If the handbag or suitcase fits into this mold, then the size check is considered passed; if not, then it is already considered luggage. In addition, you are allowed to take a coat or cape, and literature to read during the flight.

In the aircraft cabin, hand luggage is placed on shelves located directly above the passengers' seats. The space on these shelves is limited. This explains the strict requirements for the overall dimensions of hand luggage. If one of the passengers, due to an oversight by the airport services, brings an oversized bag on board the plane and puts it on the luggage rack, then someone will actually have to hold their hand luggage in their hands.

On some planes, hand luggage is stowed under the seat in front, but even there the space is very limited. Therefore, it is important to know what you can and cannot take on a plane.

Prohibited cargo

All companies set rules to which Aeroflot also obeys. Every passenger should know what not to take on a plane.

Weapons and items that can be used as weapons are not allowed on board the aircraft. It is clear that firearms with a set of ammunition for them, bombs and grenades are not just an object of control of the airport security service. This is a reason for decisive action by special forces. Knives, axes, scissors, knitting needles and other piercing and cutting objects can also become weapons under certain circumstances.

Children's toys, which are very similar in appearance to military weapons, are not at all safe, as it would seem: they can sow panic among passengers. Containers containing flammable and other flammable liquids can act as incendiary bombs under certain circumstances. Products containing toxic substances, including insect control sprays, can become chemical weapons. The list can be continued, but all of this is included in the number of items that are prohibited from being carried on board an airplane as hand luggage.

The recent growth of the terrorist threat, including in air transport, forces us to take serious security measures. These measures often create inconvenience for passengers, but this must be accepted. All this is done solely for their own safety. But that's not all that you can't take on a plane. It is prohibited to place products of living origin (tusks, bones, animal skin), meat and dairy products and liquids of chemical origin (shampoos, gels, detergents) in luggage.

You need to take valuables!

You know what not to take on a plane. But it is also important to know what you are allowed to put in your suitcases.

You must take documents, laptops, phones, jewelry, cameras and video cameras with you into the aircraft cabin. That is, everything that is called valuables, you need to have it with you. This will prevent things from getting lost and will keep them in working order.

Medicines: what can you take?

Many people say that you should not take medications on board an airplane. But it is not so.

Of the medications and medicines in the salon, you should definitely take those that you are forced to take at a strictly prescribed time. These may be cardiovascular medications, insulin for diabetics, inhalers for asthmatics and other medications. But to prevent misunderstandings during the inspection, you must have medical documents with you. All other medications that are not required during the flight must simply be sent as checked baggage.

If necessary, you must take baby food with you in the quantities required during the flight. There is no need to take extra. The security service will check what you are carrying in jars and bags for baby food, and may even persistently ask you to try all this yourself right during the control.

Ban on liquid substances

To understand how much liquid you can fit in your carry-on luggage, just imagine a simple picture. You took 10 bottles with a capacity of 100 grams each. Fill them with the liquids you need. Place all vials in a clear plastic container or bag. This is how you will receive 1 liter of liquid, which will be allowed on board the aircraft. More is not possible, but less is possible. If any bottle is incomplete, it will still be counted as full. Liquids should be understood as gels, perfumes, eau de toilette, creams and even toothpaste. It is better that the manufacturer indicate the volume on all these bottles, tubes, bottles and other containers. But if the bottle contains a number greater than 100 ml, then you will have to say goodbye to this bottle.

The list of things that cannot be carried on board an airliner as hand luggage is primarily related to flight safety, concern for protecting the lives of passengers, and preserving their health. Now you know what you can and cannot take on a plane and in your hand luggage.
