Holidays on the coast of Barcelona. Resorts for children are close to Barcelona with a good beach and clean sea. Beach season in Barcelona

Barcelona attracts, first of all, with its varied and numerous attractions.

However, there are also beaches within the city, because the capital of Catalonia is located on the coast of the Mediterranean (Balearic) Sea. Barcelona's beaches may not be the best, but nevertheless, the city offers a great opportunity to combine walking and sightseeing with a beach holiday. And outside the beach season, a walk along the embankments along the beaches can be a great addition to your vacation.

There are 10 beaches within Barcelona, many of which have the Blue Flag award - a sign of the safety and quality of beaches and sea water.

All 10 beaches of Barcelona stretch in a long strip along the east coast of the city, starting from the eastern part.

All beaches are quite wide and sandy. The sand is fine and pleasant to the touch. The color of the sand ranges from light gray to pale golden. The beaches are regularly cleaned and the sand is leveled. Before the start of each beach season, the beaches are prepared for the flow of tourists: they update the infrastructure, repair what needs repair, check the operation of showers and toilets, deliver and add sand.

Along all the beaches there is a beautiful promenade, well equipped and suitable for relaxing, walking and playing some sports. And the beaches themselves have all the necessary infrastructure: sun loungers and parasols, wooden decks and trash cans, toilets and showers, rescue towers, information and medical points, beach cafes and bars. Also, on most beaches there are children's play areas, designated areas for beach football and volleyball, and bicycle parking.

All Barcelona beaches are municipal, which means they are absolutely free. You will have to pay, unless you wish, for the rental of sun loungers and sun umbrellas, as well as beach water activities.

Sant Sebastia beach

Sant Sebastià Beach (Platja de Sant Sebastià / Sant Sebastia beach) is the westernmost beach of Barcelona, and it is also one of the oldest and most popular beaches in the center of Barcelona.

The beach starts from the eastern entrance to the port and runs to Plaza del Mar.

This is the longest beach in the historical center of Barcelona, with a length of 660 meters and an average width of 55 meters.

There is a promenade along the coast, where there are sports clubs with outdoor swimming pools, as well as bars and cafes.

The highlight and calling card of Sant Sebastia beach is the glass sail - the famous 5-star hotel W Barcelona. This hotel has already become one of the symbols of Barcelona. It marks the beginning of the beach strip and the Barceloneta area. The hotel offers views of Barcelona, beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. It features a spa, infinity pool, restaurants, a rooftop bar with panoramic views and luxurious rooms. Link to Hotel W Barcelona...

Near the hotel there is an observation deck (Mirador Mediterráneo W), which offers views of part of the coast of Barcelona.

Sant Miguel Beach

Immediately after the beach of Sant Sebastia, a continuous beach strip follows the beach of Sant Miquel (Platja de Sant Miquel / Sant Miquel beach).

The beach of Sant Miguel is also one of the oldest in the city, sandy, well equipped and wide. It has a length of about 420 meters and an average width of 48 meters. The beach stretches from Plaza del Mar to Almiral Cervera Street.

The promenade of Sant Miguel Beach is one of the busiest promenades in Barcelona.

Barceloneta beach

Behind the beach of Sant Miguel, the most recognizable beach of Barcelona - Barceloneta (Platja de la Barceloneta / Barceloneta beach) originates.

Until recently, this beach gave its name to the coastal strip between San Miguel Beach and the Mall de Marina. When part of this area regained its original name - Somorrostro Beach - Barceloneta Beach became part of the beach strip between the breakwater and the aforementioned San Miguel Beach.

The length of the beach is 422 meters and its average width is 79 meters. This beach is also well equipped and very popular.

Along the beach there is an embankment - Paseo Maritimo street, along which, as always, there are cafes and restaurants.

Behind Barceloneta beach, in a small area, between two piers, there is a sports ground.

Somorrostro Beach

Somorrostro Beach (Platja de Somorrostro / Somorrostro beach) stretches from Espigo del Gaza to the Olympic Port.

The length of the beach is 522 meters and the average width is 114 meters.

Along the beach, above the sea line, there are an abundance of cafes and restaurants, there are also nightclubs, entertainment venues and the Barcelona casino. What distinguishes this beach, and is also its main attraction, is the sculpture “Golden Fish” - a symbol of the 1992 Olympics.

In the eastern part of Somorrostro beach, on the “lower” embankment, a short row of restaurants is lined up where young people prefer to relax. It looks very picturesque.

There are two beautiful hotels near Somorrostro Beach:

Modern 5 star Pullman Barcelona Skipper located just 100 meters from the beach. It offers free Wi-Fi and 2 outdoor swimming pools. The hotel's spacious rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs and DVD players. The highlight of the hotel is that guests can relax on the roof with panoramic views of the city and the sea, where there is an outdoor swimming pool and a seasonal terrace with sun loungers. Hotel link...

Arts Barcelona is a 5-star design hotel overlooking the beach and the Olympic Port. It features an outdoor pool and spa with panoramic city views. The hotel also features contemporary art collections and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Hotel link...

All four of the Barcelona beaches described above are part of the city, they are located closest to the historical part of the city, where the bulk of Barcelona's attractions are concentrated, as well as supermarkets, markets and shopping places.

It is no wonder that this particular part of the Barcelona coast is the most popular and popular, for the same reason, the beaches, especially during the high beach season, are very crowded.

If you decide to visit Barcelona during the beach season, thereby combining walks around the city with a beach holiday, then the ideal place to stay would be the Barceloneta area. That’s right, the beaches and the historical city center will be within walking distance. All accommodation facilities in the Barceloneta area are available.

Behind Somorrostro beach there is a small marina - Port Olímpic. Along the port there is a promenade with an abundance of various cafes and restaurants. A very lively and visited place on the coast of Barcelona.

Nova Icaria Beach

The Nova Icaria beach (Platja de la Nova Icària / Nova Icaria beach) begins right behind the Olympic Port.

An excellent beach - wide, with fine golden sand and very picturesque. It is also well equipped and considered one of the beaches in Barcelona with the widest range of leisure facilities. In the eastern part of the beach there is a children's playground and a ping-pong table, and near the Olympic port there are several volleyball courts.

The beach has a length of about 415 meters and an average width of 81 meters. It stretches from the Olympic Port to the Bogatell breakwater.

Bogatell Beach

Bogatell Beach or Bagatell (Platja de Bogatell / Bogatell beach) - wide, sandy, equipped, with a wonderful promenade suitable for both walking and sports... well, everything is as it should be... - a beautiful beach.

And, to be honest, it seems to us personally: if you came to Barcelona with one goal - a beach holiday, then you should choose accommodation facilities closer to the beaches located east along the coast from the Olympic Port. It is this beach strip that is more comfortable and calm, and therefore more suitable for a beach holiday. Closer to the center it is too noisy, crowded, and somehow dirtier.

Bogatell Beach is 702 meters long and 100 meters wide. The beach stretches from the Bogatell breakwater to the Mar Bella pier. The beach also has places for sports games.

Mar Bella Beach

Mar Bella beach (Platja de la Mar Bella / Mar Bella beach) follows immediately after Bogatell beach and stretches from the Mar Bella pier to the Bac de Roda pier.

This is one of the beaches that resulted from the city's waterfront redevelopment in anticipation of the 1992 Olympic Games.

Wide, sandy, equipped, with a beautiful embankment. The length of the beach is 512 meters, and the average width is 71 meters. Part of the beach is designated as a nudist beach.

Mar Bella beach belongs to the Sant Martí area and is mainly used for its popularity among the residents of the area. In addition, on the beach embankment there is not that abundance of cafes and restaurants; it is a very quiet place.

There is a small sports ground near the beach, and on the beach itself there are several children's play areas. At the western end of the beach there is a marine center with facilities for water sports.

Nova Mar Bella Beach

Nova Mar Bella beach (Platja de la Nova Mar Bella / Nova Mar Bella beach) is adjacent to Mar Bella beach and stretches from the Bac de Roda breakwater to the Selva de Mar breakwater.

Nova Mar Bella beach is sandy and equipped, with a quiet promenade and places for beach sports.

The length of the beach is 420 meters and its average width is 87 meters. This beach, like Mar Bella Beach, is one of the beaches that arose as a result of the reconstruction of the Barcelona promenade before the Olympics. The beach also belongs to the Sant Martí district and is mainly used by residents of this area. It is considered one of the quietest in the city.

Levant Beach

Levant beach or Llevant beach (Platja de Llevant / Llevant beach) is the last and closing chain of beaches in Barcelona.

This beach was completed only in 2006 and was the result of the demolition of the old pier.

The length of the beach is 375 meters and the average width is 74 meters. The beach is also well equipped and has a beach volleyball court.

Behind the Levant beach is the Forum Park (Parc del Forum) - a complex consisting of: areas for sports games, rope rides, as well as places for walking, relaxing and swimming.

Swimming area Forum

On the territory of the Forum Park there is an artificially made swimming area Forum (Zona de banys del Fòrum / Forum bathing area). There is no sand in this place, the platform is concrete, and the descent into the sea is carried out by steps.

The Forum swimming area is 375 meters long and about 30 meters wide.

Compared to typical beaches, this is a rather unconventional swimming area and great care should be taken when approaching the water. It is important to take note of warning signs and notices, as well as any announcements made by security personnel. It is also prohibited to swim beyond the safe areas marked by float lines.

It should be remembered that the area is home to a colony of sea urchins, so to avoid injury to swimmers, it is recommended to wear suitable footwear when swimming.

This site is well equipped for people with disabilities and can be a good alternative to the usual beaches.

Behind the Forum Park there is a pier - Port Forum, behind which there is a small green area and the beach of the same name Platja del Forum, which already belongs to Sant Adrian de Besos.

Beach season in Barcelona

High season The period from May 26 to September 16 is considered. During this time, all public beach services operate from 10:30 to 19:30 hours. Public toilets are open from 10:30 to 21:00.

Mid season The period from March 24 to May 25 and from September 17 to 30 is considered. During this time, rescue towers and medical stations are open from 10:30 to 18:30.

The rest of the year is considered low season and the beaches lack most of the beach infrastructure.

Attention! From year to year, the dates of the beach seasons may change. We recommend checking the information before visiting!

Flags on the beaches of Barcelona

Paying attention to the flags placed on the beaches is very important. They are the ones who inform us about the safety of swimming in sea water. Do not risk your lives and the lives of your loved ones - first of all, when visiting the beach, always look at the color of the flag!

Red flag informs that swimming is prohibited.

Yellow flag- You can swim, but with caution. While this flag is in effect, you need to be especially vigilant about children and the elderly, and also follow the safety rules yourself: do not swim too far, do not dive or play around in the water.

Green flag- the most positive - safe swimming.

Besides architecture, jamon and sangria, Spain has at least 579 more trump cards. This is how many beaches in the country have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award. This means that most of the Spanish coastline is clean, safe and well-maintained.

In the capital of Catalonia, there are 7 of 10 such beaches, and all of them are a priori designated as the best beaches in Barcelona. However, the other 3 are also not lagging behind; earlier, a flag of the color of the sky fluttered over them.

We went through Barcelona's seaside holiday destinations and made our own rating! We did this in 2016 and 2018. The photo was taken in the morning, so there may be many fewer people than during the day :)

Our top starts from San Sebastia beach. But first we will talk about Barceloneta, because... it is the most popular.

Note that for us it is in the LAST position in the ranking of beaches.

You will either fall in love with Barceloneta at first sight, or you will be inflamed with contempt and, after lying on the sand for an hour or two, run to look for another place. 🙂 This is a real city beach in Barcelona, the oldest and most visited. Can we call it one of the top ones? Yes and no:

  • The location is excellent, with a wide beautiful promenade, 20 minutes walk from La Rambla.
  • It has a scattering of cool restaurants, cafes and bars, which in the evenings turn into a center of nightlife.
  • It is cleared of debris daily and the Blue Flag is renewed annually.
  • Meets all the needs of people with limited mobility; there is a special group of volunteers providing assistance with bathing.

There are probably more negative aspects. In Barcelona, Barceloneta Beach is not just famous, but incredibly popular! It attracts both local residents and newly arrived tourists like a magnet. Lying/sitting/standing bodies 20 centimeters apart is a typical situation at the height of the season. By the way, our photo was taken in the morning. Do you see how many people there are already?

Therefore, this is not the cleanest beach in the city. Yes, garbage is collected and removed regularly, but it is unrealistic to cope with so many people of cigarette butts, wrappers, and bottles. In addition, the sea can also be dirty. When we found ourselves in Barceloneta for the first (and last) time, we didn’t decide to go for a swim right away, because... some labels, cigarettes, leaves floated in the water; There were large stones at the entrance.

And it would seem that you have managed to relax, abstract yourself from the hubbub around and finally indulge in the Barcelona sun... when another businessman barks in your ear with an offer of beer or a towel! There are a lot of traders on Barceloneta, and there is no peace from them. In principle, as well as from partially or completely naked people. Spain is a country of free morals. 🙂

In terms of facilities, there are toilets, showers, changing cabins, lockers for storing things (you should try to find the last two items), but their condition is not always impeccable. There are special workout areas where real macho men flex their muscles, there are paths for cyclists and skaters on the embankment (you can rent them on the beach), there is a children's playground and a place for beach volleyball. Wi-Fi is mediocre.

In general, our impressions, like the reviews of most tourists, are as follows: Barceloneta beach is clearly overrated. Rather, this is a place for party people and those who like to be in a crowd. If you come here not to sunbathe, but, say, to sit in a cafe overlooking the sea or take an evening stroll along the embankment, then this is an excellent option.

How to get there:

  • by metro – line L4 to station. Barceloneta + 13 min walk
  • by bus – D20, 59, 45 to the stop. Pg Marítim-Almirall Cervera + 2 min walk

Helpful information:

  • the cost of renting sunbeds and umbrellas is 10€ each;
  • glass of sangria from a nearby bar – 5€

Inexpensive tours to Barcelona can be found online on the largest websites and. They cooperate with 120 trusted tour operators and find the most profitable ones among all available offers. Therefore, you should look for the lowest prices from them.

  • The beach of San Sebastia is well maintained: it truly deserves the Blue Flag. The sand is fine and pleasant, without any debris. Thanks to its location - in a cozy bay - the water in the sea is clean and bright.
  • The territory is wide and long (only Bogatell is longer), so it copes with the constant flow of vacationers - there is enough space for everyone.
  • It is quiet and peaceful here: merchants do not bother you. Even this quality alone makes San Sebastia worthy of the category of the best beaches in Spain!
  • Most of the audience are local (adequate) residents. Everyone does their own thing - sunbathing, swimming, playing sports. The atmosphere is light and truly relaxing.
  • The location is convenient, less than a kilometer from Barceloneta; Not far away is the famous Barcelona Aquarium. Easily recognizable by the W Barcelona sail hotel.
  • For those who like to bask in the sun topless, there is a separate area.

There is nothing to complain about in the level of equipment. All conditions have been created for a comfortable stay by the sea, except that there is a lack of safes for valuables and, possibly, entertainment. There is plenty of room for children to play, while adults can surf the Internet or go to a surfing and swimming school.

How to get there:

  • by bus – V15, 39 to the stop. Pg Joan De Borbó - Pl Del Mar + 2 min walk

Helpful information:

  • umbrella and sun lounger rental – standard 10€

We got here by pure chance, getting off at the Barceloneta metro station and turning off the road leading to the beach of the same name. And honestly, this place was like a balm for our beach heartstrings, tormented by the horrors of the first day.

San Miguel is located between Barceloneta and San Sebastia and therefore “absorbed” several negative aspects from the first and, fortunately, a lot of advantages from the second.

  • The sand is impeccably clean, the sea is turquoise and it is very comfortable to enter it. The beach, by the way, shares one Blue Flag with San Sebastia.
  • It is also located in the center, in a nice area. On the way from the metro, you can admire the yachts, boats, and boats of any degree of luxury moored in the harbor.
  • Good organization of a standard set of services on the beach; there are also bike rentals and a couple of interesting restaurants

Among the points with a minus sign are the crowd of tourists and loud-voiced (but rare) massage gurus. However, compared to Barceloneta, even this situation is much better here!

Since there are few bars on site, the beach is relatively quiet. By the way, tourist advice suggests that it is worth going to San Miguel with children. Shallow water and sufficient space for making Easter cakes make it easier to relax with a child.

How to get there:

  • by metro – line L4 to station. Barceloneta +12 min walk
  • by bus – V15, 39 to the stop. Pg Joan De Borbó-Almirall Aixada + 5 min walk
by bus – 45 to the stop. Almirall Cervera + 5 min walk

Helpful information:

  • sun loungers with umbrellas and here for 10€

It is 700 meters of sandy strip, equipped to the highest level. Renovated for the 1992 Olympics, Bogatell Beach in Barcelona is considered one of the world's premier seaside destinations for several reasons.

  • The beach is cleaned daily, and the less massive flow of tourists affects the amount of garbage left behind.
  • The sea water is cleaner. Until the waves come :)
  • Bogatel regularly receives the Blue Flag award, i.e. confirms compliance with quality standards year after year.
  • Adapted to any category of tourists: from lazy lovers of sunbathing to restless kids.
  • Has all the conditions for people with disabilities

Bogatell is one of the most popular non-tourist beaches in Barcelona. Due to the distance from the center, as can be seen on the map, people do not have the patience to get to the location. But finding a free seat at noon is still difficult. Reviews from tourists note that the atmosphere is friendly, calm, and there are no annoying cola and massage vendors.

The entrance to the sea is smooth. Showers, toilets, drinking fountains and lockers for valuables are of course available. Tanned Catalan lifeguards monitor the situation from their towers and shout at particularly angry swimmers behind the buoys through a loudspeaker.

For fans of sports and outdoor games, there are basketball hoops, volleyball nets, ping-pong tables, and even an area for kicking a ball. For children there is a playground. We also took care of the couch potatoes: you can rent a sun lounger and an umbrella, buy a mojito at the nearest bar and post photos from the scene on Instagram - the Wi-Fi is excellent.

How to get there:

  • by metro – line L4 to station. Llacuna + 15 minutes walk
  • by bus – H16 to the stop. Pg Calvell - Rambla Del Poblenou + 7 min walk
by bus – 59 to the stop. Cementiri De L'Est - Carmen Amaya + 9 min walk

Helpful information:

  • price for renting an umbrella or sun lounger – 8-10€

For the first time, conditions for a beach holiday were created in Barcelona in second halfXX century. At that time, trips to the sea took a lot of time, since the city had not yet grown to its current size and public transport in the coastal area was poorly developed.
