Victory over Sweden in Northern War demanded from Peter I the urgent development of the conquered territories. The deserted island at the mouth of the Neva attracted the attention of the newly-crowned emperor when he was choosing a location for the future fortress, the core of the new capital. The fortifications were erected according to last word fortification science of that time and would have become a serious obstacle for the enemy. But fate decreed otherwise - the fortress was never attacked, but always served as a prison for state criminals.

    A little history

Peter entrusted the construction of 5 bastions to his comrades - chief foreman Menshikov, Golovkin, Zotov, Trubetskoy, Naryshkin. The 6th, Gosudarev, was to be supervised by Tsarevich Alexei, who later became the first prisoner of the fortress. Peter himself settled nearby in a summer house and daily inspected the progress of construction by boat.

One day, the king was severely scolding careless carpenters, and at that moment a hare, fleeing from the dogs, jumped into his arms. Peter became emotional, pardoned the workers, and ordered the island to be called Hare. This, of course, is a legend, but the monument to the long-eared man stands on a pile sticking out of the water near the Ioannovsky Gate. They say that throwing a coin to the bunny Arseny brings good luck.
