Koh Chang is one of the largest islands in Thailand; its name means “elephant” in Thai. Koh Chang Island is part of national park Moo Ko Chang. The distance from Pattaya to Koh Chang is 250 km.

Koh Chang Island is a beautiful large green island with developed infrastructure, a large number of beaches, and even several waterfalls. It is not as popular as Phuket or Samui... And it’s easier to get from Pattaya to Koh Chang - you don’t need to fly to it, you can get there by bus and ferry. And when you have limited travel time per week, this is an important factor... So, how to get to Koh Chang and how much does it cost?
While in Pattaya, in the central promenade area you will find great amount tents of local travel agencies offering, among various tours and excursions, a bus trip from Pattaya to Koh Chang.
The distance to the island is approximately 250 km. The duration of the trip is from three hours. The bus is coming to Trat pier, then ferry to Koh Chang. What is the price? The cost at agencies varies, one might even say negotiable, and reaches 1000 baht (25 euros) per person one way - this amount includes pick-up at the hotel and the ferry to Koh Chang. We found it for 600 baht (15 euros) per person, a total of 1200 baht (30 euros) for two one way. You don’t need to pay the entire amount at once; you can make an advance payment and pay the bus driver the rest. As it turned out later, the carrier 35 Group Pattaya in its office sells these tickets even 2 times cheaper - for 600 baht (15 euros) for two. Return tickets still cost 300 baht (7.50 euros) if you buy them at the Trat pier.
A day later, at 13:00, a comfortable Toyota minibus for a dozen people with a leather interior and air conditioning picked us up at the hotel. After briefly collecting the rest of the passengers around Pattaya, we headed to Trat. During the trip, which lasted almost 5 hours, we were “covered” several times by tropical downpours, which is why we drove for so long, but we got there without incident... Except for my favorite sunglasses that I forgot in the minibus... Bus Pattaya - Koh Chang reaches the Trat Koh Chang Ferry Pier, from which a ferry departs every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 19:00 to Koh Chang island.

The ferry filled with people and cars floats slowly and for a long time, about 30 minutes... During this time, not so much because of the approaching evening, but because of the approaching next tropical September downpour, it became completely dark. We landed in the pouring rain in pitch darkness.
How to get there next? You can get to your hotel on Koh Chang exclusively by the same pick-up minibuses (songteo) - the price depending on the distance is from 50 to 150 baht (1.25-3.75 euros) per person. Our hotel was the furthest away - on the other end of the island... The trip is very reminiscent of a roller coaster! The pier regularly runs a ferry to Koh Chang. The first flight departs at 6:30, the last at 19:00. The ferry sails across the sea for only half an hour, the cost of the crossing is 100 baht. It takes passengers to either Ao Sapparot or Center Point Pier.
Minibus
To get to Koh Chang, or more precisely to the pier on the mainland, from Pattaya by minibus it will take at least 3.5 hours. Both travel agencies and transport companies organize such trips. They are the ones who sell tickets and provide cars. The big advantage of this method is that minibuses can pick you up right from the hotel, and you don’t need to think in advance about how to get to this or that place.
The journey will cost 300 baht (without ferry). This method is also not expensive, but it is much faster than traveling by bus. The first minibus leaves at 7 am, then at 9, 11 and 13 o'clock. When purchasing a ticket, you can also arrange for a car to take you directly to your hotel on Koh Chang. The cost of such a one-way trip will be approximately 550 baht. You can buy a ticket at any travel agency or at the office of 35 Group Pattaya, which is located on Pattaya Tai Street.
Taxi
The most comfortable way to travel to Koh Chang is by taxi. But at the same time, this is one of the most expensive options. Since you will have to pay from 3 to 5 thousand baht for the road to the pier. The trip will take 3-4 hours. You can catch a taxi right on the street; all the cars are usually bright in color. In this case, the cost of the trip must be agreed upon in advance. Don't be afraid to haggle, as the original price is often very high.
A more convenient option is to order a taxi online on the website. There is no need to negotiate anything here, since such companies usually have fixed rates, or they travel by meter. The most popular pier is Ao Thammachat. Here ferries run every half hour, and you can cross even with a bike or car. Passengers disembark at the Ao Sapparot pier on Koh Chang. Travel time is 25 minutes.
The closest pier to Trat is the Center Point Pier, so most of tuk-tuks from the bus station or airport deliver passengers exactly here. Here, the interval between ferries is 1 hour, and the cost of a one-way trip is 80 baht. Children travel free of charge. There is also a crossing for cars and motorbikes.
