In Baku by train. Train schedule: Baku-Pass. Suburban rail service

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (Azerbaycan Demir Yollari, Azerbaijan Railways) was established in 2009 on the basis of the Azerbaijan Railway. The subsidiary CJSC Nakhichevan Railway serves a section of the road in the autonomous republic of the same name. The national railway operator has 100% state capital. In 2015, a new stage of development began. Until 2022, they plan to invest $5 billion in the reconstruction, electrification and creation of modern infrastructure. A complete renewal of the rolling stock (freight, passenger, locomotive) will be carried out.

Azerbaijan is actively integrating into the international economic community, which requires the active development of communication routes. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars highway has been launched, and trains to Istanbul will begin running in 2018. The North-South project is being implemented, which will connect Iran, the Russian Federation and Northern Europe. The TRACECA transport corridor will connect Europe, the Caucasus and Asia.

The railway came to Azerbaijan in 1880. Its history is directly related to the development of oil production. The first section from Baku to Sumgayit was only 20 km long. Today, the total length of railway tracks is 2910 km, 1241 of which are electrified. 802 km of roads are double track. There are 176 stations (including freight stations).

Suburban rail service

Due to the low profitability of transportation, commuter trains are not very common throughout the country. Local residents mainly use personal transport, buses and taxis. Active suburban traffic remained on the Baku-Yalama section and near Ganja. All days (except Saturday) the Baku-Shirvan-Hajikabul train runs. The electric trains used are ER2, made during the Soviet era. The most expensive ticket for a commuter train costs 18 manats*.

Note! Suburban trains to Baku depart not from the central station, but from other stations within the city (Kishly, Khirdalan, Khatai, Bilejari).

Since August 11, 2009, the movement of commuter trains on the Absheron Peninsula has been reduced to a minimum. Some of the tracks were dismantled and the structures were demolished. At the beginning of 2018, a large-scale reconstruction of the Baku Suburban Railway (length 107 km) began, which is planned to be completed by September.

Note! Due to construction work, the commuter train schedule often changes.

Modernization will improve the connection of the city center with Sumgayit and the villages of Subanchi, Zabrat, Pirmagi, Goradil, Saray, Kurdakhani. The intensity and speed of train traffic will increase.

On October 30, 2017, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line (in the future Istanbul) was officially opened.

Stadler Rail Group vehicles reach a speed of 160 km/h and move on tracks of different widths (equipped with sliding wheels). 30 carriages of 1st class (double compartments with shower and toilet), 2nd class (four-berth compartments and compartments for disabled people), and dining cars were purchased. The train is capable of being on autonomous power for 24 hours in the event of a locomotive breakdown. The journey will take 18 hours.

Note! The movement of passenger trains on the route Baku - Tbilisi - Kars will begin in September 2018.

The nearest plans include the launch of electric trains between Dagestan and Azerbaijan. And the construction of a railway to the Shahdag ski resort in the Gusar region in order to increase the tourist flow from Russia.

Luxury Express trains to Mingachevir and Astara have been canceled due to unprofitability. Only Express 607/608 runs from Baku to Ganja.

Additional services on trains

Traveling on a branded train allows you to choose the type of food, receive a hygiene kit and newspapers.

All carriages are no older than 12 years old and are equipped with modern air conditioning equipment and dry closets. The conductors were trained according to special programs. The upper seats are covered, with the exception of the upper side reserved seats. The dining car offers an expanded range of dishes. The presence of a TV depends on the car model. There are a huge number of negative reviews from travelers about the trains of AZD JSC on the Internet. They relate to old rolling stock, non-working air conditioners, attempts by conductors to charge for services included in the ticket price, and windows closed in the heat. But in recent years the situation has changed radically. In addition to technical modernization, much attention is paid to improving the professional qualities of train crews. Azerbaijan Railways has set itself the goal of providing passengers with safety and high quality services at affordable prices in the near future.

*prices are current as of July 2018

The outside of the carriage is not new, but inside it is clear that it has been upgraded. All the soft parts are covered with dark green leatherette, which made me very happy. The socket was above one lower place. That's enough for us. But I would like more. Overall, the inside of the carriage is clean and fresh. Toilet paper and soap were present in the toilets. One of the toilets was bio. The two conductors practically did not speak Russian. This is a minus. And so, everything was wonderful.

Although the guides were not particularly affectionate, they did everything they could for cleanliness and order. It was very stuffy during the stops, which were quite long, especially at the border. The air conditioner or fan only operates while driving. It's difficult on a train like this in this heat.

The compartment was clean, but in the carriage, especially in the toilets, the conductors cleaned only before the border, one of the toilets, even though it was bio-type, was closed by the conductors at night, toilet paper in the far toilet from the conductors very rarely appeared, we were on the road for almost 28 hours, we didn’t have enough drinking water, the conductors didn’t have it either to even buy it, I don’t know whether there is a restaurant carriage or not, they didn’t offer food from the restaurant in the carriage, in general, the ticket price and quality of service are very inconsistent

The train is very old. The rails for the top shelves are simply two straps that attach parallel to the shelves. No one fell, of course, but the fall insurance is so-so. The conductor spoke to me (Russian) in a condescending manner. Maybe this is a form of communication, I don’t mind, but the Moscow-Baku train is a very colorful place. On the verge of a foul.
