Mountain lake near Forte dei Marmi. Forte dei Marmi is a resort in Italy. Holidays and Events

Forte dei Marmio is a small cozy seaside town in eastern Italy in the Tuscan region, in the province of Lucca, on the shores of the Ligurian Sea. There is one big drawback to this wonderful place, which is precisely the reason why you shouldn’t go here - it’s the high cost of the resort (well, expensive or cheap is a relative concept, it all depends on income, but for the average citizen the resort is really expensive), however There are still about a dozen reasons why it’s worth coming here for at least a day or two, strolling along the embankments, swimming in the sea and feeling the spirit of this small Italian town.

And so, Forte dei Marmio is the most luxurious, most comfortable and most expensive resort in Italy. Those who value comfort, chic and service at the highest level will definitely appreciate Forte dei Marmio.

Here you can have a wonderful holiday with children, because the beaches (price per day from 20 to 80 euros) are equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable holiday. There are, of course, several free municipal beaches, but you can’t expect comfort there, because there are so many people there that you can’t even find a place to sit.

Moreover, the town is located in a very picturesque and simply charming place - surrounded by mountains and pine forests. Charming landscapes, mild climate and clean air will conquer anyone. This is probably why (the sea, the Apuan Mountains, the beauty of which is not inferior to the Alps, forests) the resort was chosen by the rich... read more

Another important factor in the development of Forte is the Via di Marina road, along which marble was brought from the quarries to the seaport for further transportation (it is not for nothing that the construction of the road is believed to have been led by Donato Benti, an associate of Michelangelo Buonarotti), and from the port in the opposite direction iron followed the direction.

What to see

Fort Leopold

Fort Leopold © tgregione.it

Of course, Fort Lorraine, or simply “Il Fortino”, is one of the main attractions of Forte dei Marmi. Built in the 18th century. The fortification is located in the very center of the city, in Piazza Garibaldi. It was ordered to be built by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold I from the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, who set himself the task of strengthening the northern section of the coast of his state. A chain of small fortifications was built that maintained communication through light signals. In addition to its defensive function, the fort was also a warehouse for marble; during the fascist period, there was a party headquarters here, and even later a post office. Today the building houses the Museum of Satire and Caricature, which has a large collection of works by artists of the past and present.

The fort is quadrangular and consists of two adjacent buildings. The main building includes premises that were originally created as residential premises and ends with a bell tower. Adjacent to it is a bastion, which, unlike the main building covered with plaster, is constructed in simple brickwork.

Villa Bertelli

Villa Bertelli © vetreriabonini.com

Villa Bertelli is a mansion of the late 19th century, which is located in the Vittoria Apuana district, at Via Mazzini, 200. The villa building was built in 1896 by the Italian company SIPE, specialized in the production of explosives. Initially, the villa had its own pier for shipping mines produced by this company abroad. At the end of the First World War, things went south as demand for mines collapsed and the company was forced into liquidation. The building in Forte dei Marmi was purchased in 1926 by Ilio Bertelli, who turned the mansion into a hotel called Villa Bertelli.

In the thirties the pier was dismantled. The hotel subsequently also closed - this happened in 1971, and for many years the villa remained abandoned, and the park surrounding it fell into disrepair. In the early 2000s. The authorities of Forte dei Marmi bought the building, carried out a full-scale restoration and adapted the villa into an exhibition space. Nowadays, many events organized by the city administration take place here: concerts are held in the summer and at Christmas, exhibitions are constantly held, and the villa with its beautiful park again appears to residents and guests of the city in all its original splendor.

Cycling routes

You can start from the Forte dei Marmi pier and ride along the bike path to the south. Along the way, you can admire the villas and hotels on your left, as well as the beaches, the sea and prestigious establishments like La Capannina (a club opened by the owner of one of the local hotels, Achille Franceschi in 1929) on your right. Once you reach Marina di Pietrasanta, you need to drive through Fiumetto, Tonfano, Pontile and Le Fochette, where the famous discotheque La Bussola is located. Next you need to move towards Lido di Camaiore, not forgetting to stop to enjoy the panorama from Pontile. After 11.5 km you will find yourself in Viareggio, where it is worth noticing the wonderful Liberty style houses on either side of the Franco Coppi cycle path. At the level of the Burlamacca canal the path turns left; Continue on the right and, when you reach the traffic lights at the drawbridge, turn right towards Torre del Lago.

At the first traffic light go straight and at the fork turn right into Viale dei Tigli; it is almost five kilometers of a straight alley with trees. About halfway from Viareggio to Torre del Lago is Villa Borbone, one of Viareggio's most impressive historical sites. The building is surrounded by the greenery of the Migliarino-S.Rossore-Massaciuccoli Natural Park; It was built in 1822 as a hunting lodge in the park, the design of which was commissioned by the Duchess of Lucca Maria Luisa of Spain to the architect Lorenzo Nottolini. After visiting the villa and park, continue along Viale dei Tigli towards Torre del Lago.

At the traffic lights at the end of the alley, turn left into Viale Guglielmo Marconi and continue straight towards the mountains, through the city center and the railway tunnel. At the traffic light at the corner with Via Aurelia Sud, go straight again to the pedestrian area near the Villa-Museum of Giacomo Puccini, where the ashes of the famous composer rest. After visiting the villa, we recommend taking a break and enjoying the panorama of the lake that opens from here. In summer you can watch opera performances here as part of the Puccini Festival. You can return to Forte dei Marmi the same way.

Beaches and sea

On the beaches of the northern part of the Tyrrhenian coast you can enjoy a unique panorama: the Apuan Alps protect these places from the winds, so the climate here is very mild both in summer and winter. A long drift of fine sand and a seabed that slopes gently away from the shore make Forte dei Marmi an ideal beach holiday destination for everyone, especially children.

Guests of the city have more than 100 beaches of the highest quality at their disposal, where they can relax and unwind. On the stretch of free beach, on the border with Cinquale, you can still see the dunes, a characteristic element of the local landscape as it was before the tourist boom, which is now protected as part of the Wildlife Foundation oasis. The city is also actively committed to environmental protection, and this work has been recognized with a number of major awards, such as the Blue Flag for the quality of local waters and beach services, as well as the EMAS certificate for the environmental friendliness of services provided to local residents.

The preparatory stage will take about five minutes, and the preparation itself will take about forty. Next, boiled beans are added, which are cooked in this mass for about 30 minutes.

A languid and fragrant August has come into its own. This month is like a dessert before the start of the school and work year, so it should be interesting and useful. Where can you enjoy spending the rest of the summer with your whole family? Hellomonacoshares a travel route tested from personal experience.

Destination - Forte dei Marmi. Available: dad, mom, 3 “different-sized” children, nanny, 2 cats. The road from Monaco to Forte dei Marmi takes us 4 hours (300 km), including one 30-minute stop for a snack, which, you see, is not at all tiring. And here we are in the Fort.

The resort town is located in the Tuscany region on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast. The first mention of the city dates back to the 16th century. It was then that a port was built here, which served for the shipment of marble mined in the nearby Apuan Mountains. Later, at the end of the 18th century, by order of Leopold I, a fortress was erected on the shore, designed to protect the population from raids from the sea. At this time, the current name of the city Forte dei Marmi appeared, meaning “fortress of marble.”

This Italian town became a famous resort in the middle of the last century. At first it attracted the attention of Italian aristocrats, and later it was chosen by wealthy tourists from all over the world, including from Russia. By 2000, Forte dei Marmi had become a favorite holiday destination for Russian businessmen. They bought about 30 percent of the real estate here, and the resort began to be affectionately called “Fortochka”.

Why Russians fell in love with “Fortochka”

This is an absolutely serene family retreat. Those who have had enough of playing in Monte Carlo and having fun in Saint-Tropez relax here. Here nothing will disturb your peace on the beach. Although no - it is violated by countless sellers of fake handbags, from Chanel to Birkin, as well as watches - from Rolex to Patek Philippe, and other things. So, if your friend suddenly begins to go out indecently often wearing a new watch, ask if she was recently in Forte dei Marmi, and everything will fall into place. But this is not the only reason why the “window” is valued. Journalist and socialite Bozena Rynska spoke in one of her articles about why Russians fell in love with Forte: “First of all, this is a children’s resort, and you can ride bikes there. Whether an important oligarch or a dwarf, everyone rents bicycles and travels exclusively on them. Among the “features” of Forte are three-wheeled bicycles for adults. It’s very convenient: you put the child in the basket and roll it around - it’s safe and fun, the child is happy!

The second and most important thing is the sandy beach, which is a haven for the cub. You can’t dig holes on the beaches of Monaco and you can’t build sand castles...” I would like to add that, indeed, 20 kilometers of perfect sand will not leave you and your children indifferent. The beaches of Forte are considered one of the best in Italy: they are well equipped and picturesque. To the south of the resort is the sandy beach of Twiga, 6 kilometers to the north is the beach of Marina Dei Ronchi. There are also sports bases at sea that are well equipped and ready to accommodate sailing enthusiasts of all skill levels. In favorable weather conditions, surfers will not be left without pleasure. But the sea here, as they say, is not for everyone. Firstly, it is small, which is a definite plus for parents with small children, but not very convenient for adults. You have to walk for about 10 minutes to immerse your body in the water. Many never make it - they splash in the shallow water with their children. Secondly, it is not as transparent and not at all azure (due to the sandy bottom) as we are used to seeing on the French Riviera. However, this is only a visual effect - the sea is clean, you can swim.

Russian-speaking vacationers prefer to stay on Bagno Annetta beach. There, in addition to traditional tents with sun loungers, there is an excellent swimming pool and a restaurant with very tasty cuisine. You can take your child to a mini-club, where he will be entertained by animators all day long. However, if you do not really miss Russian speech, then I do not recommend dropping anchor in Annetta. All neighboring beaches are similar to each other, and for lunch you can go to any restaurant. There are also mini clubs on many beaches.

Another entertainment by the sea is massage. It is done by Chinese women for 30 euros per hour right on the beach. There are many masseuses, so you won’t be left without one. But the quality is different. If you are lucky with a good masseuse, it is better to agree with her immediately for the entire period of your vacation.

Forte is famous not only for its sea and beach, but also for its air. The great Caesar himself came here in search of a suitable climate to relieve his asthma. They say that the local pine forests have created a miracle. That’s why we choose Forte dei Marmi as our permanent place of residence.

What to see

The main attraction of the resort is the remains of that ancient fort (Fortino). Nearby there is the original Museum of Caricature and Satire, which you can safely plan a couple of hours to visit. The Museo della Satira e della Caricatura contains a rich collection of the history of satire and caricature from around the world, including original sketches by medieval and modern artists, a library of 2,500 volumes, and a rich video and multimedia archive. Along with the permanent exhibition, modern exhibitions are also held here. Museum address: Piazza Garibaldi.

It will also be interesting to take a walk to the old marble warehouse. This is one of the earliest buildings in the Fort and dates back to 1618.

The open-air theater Torre del Lago and, part-time, the villa of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini, will leave you with an indelible impression. This theater hosts the Giacomo Festival once a year.

Every Sunday the center turns into a grand market where you can buy homemade cheeses and Italian wines, as well as clothes, decent cashmere, shoes and a variety of souvenirs. Another city square, Piazza Dante, becomes a center for antiques trading on the second weekend of every month. At this market you can sometimes find interesting items for your home. The food market is open every day in Piazza Donatori di Organi (covered market). Opening hours: 7:00 – 20:00.

Where to eat?

In Italy there is no such problem at all - in almost any restaurant chosen at random you will be given a decent welcome. But still, some are worth mentioning separately. The most democratic and delicious place is the Bocconcino/Al Bocconcino restaurant. Super-thin crust pizza, pasta, risotto, mussels and traditional seafood fritto misto are beyond praise.

Very good restaurants are located on the beach Osteria Del Mare and Gilda - a charming, cozy place for dinner with excellent cuisine. Restaurant La Barca is one of the oldest places in Forte dei Marmi. It dates back to 1906, when Captain Leo Tacchella moored his ship here, on which he transported wine from the island of Elba to Forte dei Marmi. Bistro/Bistrot on the shore is very popular among our compatriots. But, either we were unlucky, or we chose the wrong dishes, but in the end we were there once and decided not to return.

After dinner, traditional entertainment is a trip to the carousel, which operates from 7 pm until late at night. For entertainment, children are offered pony rides, go-karts, slot machines and a breeze carousel. In general, not Disneyland, but quite acceptable for children under 10 years old. Enterprising Italians upgraded the 20-year-old attractions: they hung a squirrel tail from each one, and now the main children's fun comes down to catching the tail, which is deftly manipulated by a specially trained “carousel operator.” This causes complete delight in children, especially since the tail torn off from a squirrel gets one free circle.

And while the kids are riding the carousel, moms have another form of entertainment - shopping! Fortunately, shops in Fort, unlike Monaco, are open from 17.00 to 24.00. Russian clients are loved here and are carefully offered water, coffee or champagne - they are courted, as they say. In Forte, of course, all the main brand stores are represented, but there are also many local Italian ones, where you can bargain until you drop, if that’s what you like.

As mentioned above, the most popular activity among tourists in the Fort is cycling. The city infrastructure is designed in such a way that most of the central streets are closed to vehicles. Bicycles can be rented at almost every hotel or small tent in the city. The choice of two-wheeled models is wide - there are also special child seats. A drive or walk along the promenade past the central street Piazza Marconi to Lago di Porta will be a magnificent and vibrant adventure on a fresh holiday. Fans of long bicycle rides can take a fascinating mini-trip to neighboring Petrosante - a town of sculptors and marble, located at the foot of the mountain. Here, in the Marina di Carra area, the famous Carrara marble is mined. The famous grotto of Michelangelo is also located there, in which the great genius found a suitable solid piece for his David.

After riding a bike, breathing in the pine forests and building hundreds of sand figures, get behind the wheel and go on a trip to nearby cities. Our plans include the following destinations: Pisa, Sienna, Montecatini, Florence and Portovenere. Fortunately, they are all within an hour’s reach from Forte. But we'll talk about this next weekend.

The Italian resort of Forte dei Marmi is one of the most exclusive and fashionable places in the country, the secular capital of Versilia, the Italian Monte Carlo. An atmosphere of true luxury and exceptional comfort reigns here. Since the 19th century. This is where the aristocratic public and the business elite gather to bask on golden sandy beaches, enjoy the picturesque landscapes, discuss business and indulge in fashionable entertainment.

Business card

Forte dei Marmi is located on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city in this place originated in the distant 16th century. At first it was a small military garrison, which quickly became a fortified fort thanks to the mining and trade of the famous Apuan marble. Beautiful and high-quality stone was then in great demand in Italy, where architecture and sculpture flourished. Translated, Forte dei Marmi means “Fortress of Marble”.

The resort history of the town began in the 19th century, when a fashion for seaside holidays arose among the Italian nobility. In Forte dei Marmi, infrastructure immediately began to expand. The local beauty of the local landscapes and the magnificent mild climate attracted the powers that be: representatives of noble families, large industrialists and financiers, cultural figures and even royalty from all over Europe. They built their magnificent villas here, surrounded by pine groves, and spent the entire summer season here, indulging in bliss on the sun-drenched beaches.

Nowadays, according to established tradition, there is no trace of mass tourism in Forte dei Marmi. Natural landscapes have been preserved in their original form and are only slightly decorated with flowering flower beds, parks and shady alleys. It is customary to travel around the resort by bicycle. More than 2,500 households in Forte dei Marmi belong to Russians.

The cost of all services in Forte dei Marmi is quite high compared to other resorts in Italy and, perhaps, comparable to prices in Monaco, which is only 3 hours away from here.

History and modernity

Forte dai Marmi is the secular capital of the Tyrrhenian coast, the Italian Monte Carlo, a symbol of respectable holidays. The resort history of this town began in the 19th century, when the Italian aristocracy and business elite drew attention to it.
