The Island of Capri is one unique attraction, on 10 square kilometers of which the concentration of beautiful places is simply off the charts. There are few museums, historical sites and other components of the traditional cultural program here, so the list of what to see in Capri will include, for the most part, exclusively natural beauty. You can swim in Capri, but not everywhere - we’ll also talk about this later in the article.

The two largest villages on the island of Capri are Capri and Anacapri, the port is located in the village of Marina Grande in the northern part of the island. From the port to the center of the village of Capri is less than a kilometer.
The bus map for Capri is shown below. It’s not even buses that travel around the island, but minibuses with a capacity of 8-12 people. The cost of the trip when purchasing a ticket from the driver is 2.50 €.

The island itself is mountainous, so the roads are very narrow and winding, like snakes. In this regard, tourists are often advised to prefer walking to a rented car - the island is tiny!
And a note to those who like to relax on the beach - it is precisely because of the mountains and hills that there is a real problem with the beaches. Not only are there only one or two of them, but during the season they are also very crowded.

Boat trip around the island
Since the island's few tourists are a seasonal phenomenon, there are no regular organized tours on or around the island - it would be impossible to attract enough people each time, so all tours are on request. But this is a plus - in return, the port offers boats for rent!
Not to say that this is a completely budget pleasure, but the impressions will definitely last you for a long time. In total, tourists are given a choice of 6 types of boats, each with its own name:
- Lancia – small traditional boat for 1-5 people;
- Gozzo - the same traditional boat, but up to 6 passengers;
- Large Gozzo or Lancia boat for 12 people;
- Dinghy – a modern inflatable motor boat for 6-7 people;
- Speedboat – boat for 6-12 people;
- Luxury Yacht – There will be a minimum of 2 crew members on board depending on the size of the yacht.
All listed vessels can be rented without any boat license. If you are afraid to sail on your own, you can take a guide or book a private excursion.
Such pleasure costs from 70 € for 2 hours (150 € per day) on a Lancia boat. Renting a yacht for the whole day will cost between 800-900 €.
Blue Grotto Capri
Like any self-respecting mountainous island, Capri has a beautiful grotto - this is the first place you should go on a boat rented from the port.
But due to the fact that the cave has a single entrance and there is little light in the cave, the water that flooded its bottom is cast in a rich blue color. The grotto itself is quite small - 60 by 25 mm, and due to the fact that the entrance to it is low, it will not be possible to swim here in stormy weather.
Faraglioni Rocks
Despite the fact that such rocky formations are far from uncommon in nature, for some reason the Faraglioni rocks have become the most recognizable calling card of the island. There are three rocks in total, and the locals gave each name - Stella, Mezzo and Scopolo.
Rock of Scopolo is the only place in the world where these beautiful blue lizards live. Perhaps it was precisely the need to blend in color with the sea and sky that led to the fact that the lizards here acquired such a beautiful color.
Mount Solaro
From here you have the most beautiful views of Capri. A funicular takes everyone up the mountain from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri; the ascent takes only 12 minutes.
Locals nicknamed the mountain Acchiappanuvole, in Russian something like “fog catcher”. The top is often shrouded in a thick blanket of fog, usually in the evenings and especially often in the fall. If you get here in foggy weather, you can simply wander along the walking paths.

Villa San Michele in Anacapri
Once you've been on the boat, it's time to explore the treasures of the island itself. The first is Villa San Michele, which was built here at the beginning of the 20th century by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. Later, in the twilight of his career, he wrote a book named after this truly magical place.
By the way, the book remained practically unknown to the Russian-speaking reader, but in Europe in those years it was published in 40 languages.
The villa itself is maintained in excellent condition to this day and is used as a museum. Around it there are panoramic gardens with exotic flowers.

Gardens of Augustus
The Botanical Garden of Capri was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the German entrepreneur Friedrich Krupp - wealthy Europeans of that time really loved this island very much.
From here you have views of all the iconic places of the island - Mount Solaro, the Faraglioni rocks and the Marina Piccola cove.
The panoramic gardens are home to many rare flowers and plants, and also – attention – a monument to Lenin! In 1968, the Soviet embassy in Italy commissioned a local architect to create a monument that remains in the gardens to this day.

Just walk around the island
Capri is ideal for those who simply want a quiet, relaxed holiday in a relaxed atmosphere. There are no large museums or similar noisy tourist places on the island, but you can stroll around the narrow streets to your heart’s content, admire the handicrafts of local craftsmen and sunbathe on the local beaches, which will be discussed further.
Beaches of Capri
The island of Capri is a large rock in the middle of the sea, so those who prefer sandy beaches are unlikely to be happy. Without exception, all suitable places for swimming in Capri are rocky slopes, some flat, some steep. But the shores will delight vacationers with the clearest water of a rich turquoise color.
Marina Piccola
This is a small free beach in the bay of the same name. Swimming here is a pleasure, but there is practically nowhere to lie down and sunbathe. But there is a little trick - you can have lunch at a cafe on the shore and use the sun loungers on the terrace for free.
Marina Grande
If you don’t want to go far from the villages, then you can go for sunbathing in the port of Marina Grande, or rather on the beach fenced off from the port. Despite the constant movement of watercraft near the beach itself, for some reason the water always remains incredibly clean. You can sunbathe on free sun loungers.
Palazzo a Mare
This beach near Marina Grande can be reached by boat or on foot. This is a relatively flat pebble beach, and here you can stretch out on the beach right next to the water.
Faraglioni(Luigi di Faraglioni)
One of the Faraglioni rocks is still connected to the island by a thin strip of land, which has a tiny private beach. You can get here by shuttle boat, which sails from the Marina Piccola bay. The same boat takes tourists back in the evening.
Beach at the Punta Carena lighthouse (Lido del Faro)
One of the few places where you can safely go into the water around Anacapri. The place is hardly suitable for families with children - the water is very deep, and they go down there along a ladder coming from the main terrace. The beach is free.

Located in the Punta Carena lighthouse area, Hotel Da Gelsomina has a large outdoor pool, bar and sea views. The peculiarity is that the pool is open not only to hotel guests, but also to anyone interested.

One of the most prestigious resorts in the world was called “the town of sweet idleness” in ancient times. People come here to bask on the snow-white beaches and have fun to the fullest. Climate and weather
The mild Mediterranean climate, which has healing properties, contributes to an excellent holiday: the temperature in the high season (from April to September) fluctuates between 22-28 o C, and no one suffers from the sweltering heat. In addition, it has a beneficial effect on the respiratory system, and the lack of rain brings people suffering from lung diseases here. The resort, bathed in sunshine all year round, has a wonderful collection of attractions that need to be talked about.
Two communities in a resort
There are only two cities on the island - Capri, where Maxim Gorky once lived, and Anacapri. The first one is often chosen by young people who love noisy parties and shopping lovers. This is a real tourist center with shops, restaurants and hotels.
And the second community, more like a village than a city, is preferred by older people who prefer a relaxing holiday. The small settlements are connected by the Phoenician Stairs, carved into the rock in ancient times. Its length is more than one and a half kilometers, and the climb takes at least an hour. Tourists visiting Anacapri must take a cable car to the highest point of the resort - Mount Solaro, from where fantastically beautiful landscapes of the island of Capri (Italy) open up.
What to see at the prestigious resort?
The miniature island, whose area does not exceed 10 km2, can be walked around lengthwise and crosswise during your stay on it. But despite this, it is rich in historical monuments. The multifaceted island of Capri (Italy), whose attractions attract tourists from all over the world, boasts unique structures left over from ancient times: these are the ancient baths of Tiberius and the wonderful Villa of Iovis, located on Mount Monte Tiberio.
Blue Grotto
Of course, the main attraction of the majestic island of Capri in Italy is nature, and the miraculous masterpieces of the resort arouse great interest among vacationers, who note the amazingly clear sea, the sandy bottom of which can be seen at a depth of ten meters. One of the most popular tourist sites is the Blue Grotto, which got its name due to the color of the sea water. It is impossible to get into it during a storm, so all excursions are carried out exclusively in calm, sunny weather. The unofficial symbol of the Italian pearl is a beautiful cave located on the very Ancient legends say that it was this grotto that was chosen by the sirens, whom the courageous Odysseus was so afraid of.
The sunlight that breaks through is reflected from the snow-white bottom, and the sea water, due to a natural depression in the rock, acquires shades of the rich blue color that gives the attraction its name.
Stone giants of the Faraglioni
The wonderful island of Capri (Italy) is rightfully proud of another natural monument, photos of which evoke an irresistible desire to visit the resort area created for recreation. The mysterious limestone reefs of the Faraglioni protrude from the depths of the sea and are a unique element of the island landscape. Creative people contemplating unusual beauty have been drawing their inspiration here for several centuries.
Stone colossi, more than 100 meters high, rise like gigantic obelisks above the sea, and in one of them, wind, water and time have carved a stone arch through which tourist boats inevitably sail. We must warn you that there are no budget hotels on the island of Capri (Italy). The world-class tourist center is an elite holiday destination, and the high level of service at the prestigious resort is legendary. Some hotels are only open in the summer, while others operate all year round.

But everything can be different: here we will tell you about things that you won’t need to spend a lot of money on. The proximity of Capri to and makes the island a very convenient place to spend time at least for one day. High Rocks is one of the symbols. This is the name of three massive rocks near the island, which can be reached by boat.

Each of the three rocks has its own name. The closest one to the island is called Saetta, the middle one is Scopolo. Azure Grotto Capri
The famous Azure Grotto of Capri has been known since the time of Emperor Tiberius, who built a road to it from his villa.
Its incredible azure color brought it fame and name: in good weather, it seems as if the water in the sea is illuminated from within, and you can see myriads of silver fish. You can get inside by a small boat that can accommodate no more than 4 people. The height of the entrance is only a meter, so when swimming inside the cave, you need to bend down very much. At the entrance to the grotto, especially during peak season, you can sometimes wait an hour waiting in line: you will be offered sunscreen, a hat and water. The boat tour lasts about 5 minutes, but swimming and diving inside is prohibited.
Mount Solaro in Capri
Mount Solaro, 589m high, is the ideal place to enjoy views of the island at its foot and of distant Naples and Salerno across a stretch of dazzling sea.
Many species of birds nest here, including the pilgrim falcon, and in general the island offers typical Mediterranean flora and fauna.
The best time for this is spring, when the air is filled with the aromas of freesias and wisterias. On the mountain it is worth visiting the Hermitage of St. Mary (Eremo di Santa Maria) - in the past a place of retreat for monks, the Barbarossa fortress (Castello di Barbarossa), supposedly built in the 11th century. and withstood the siege of the Turkish admiral Cairo ad-din in 1535.
Villa Jovis in Capri
Villa Jovis was dedicated to Jupiter by Emperor Tiberius - it is one of the brightest examples of Roman architecture preserved on the Mediterranean coast. This is not the only villa built by the emperor on Capri, but it is definitely one of the most elegant - 7 sq. m. km on the cape at the eastern end of the island.
From here you have views of Ischia and Procida, the Gulf of Salerno and the Cilento coast. The villa was built in the 1st century. and the emperor spent 12 years on it, controlling the destinies of the Empire from the island.
Today it is possible to visit what remains of it: in the center there are large reservoirs for rainwater, and around it there are a series of buildings for the emperor, army and servants, as well as the throne room. The villa was plundered during the Bourbon era and restored in 1932 thanks to the intervention of Amedeo Maiuri, director of the Archaeological Museum of Naples (Museo Archeologico di Napoli).
Capri Square
Piazza Umberto I is the center of social life in Capri, better known as simply the Square.
People come here to drink coffee, chat and admire the gorgeous panorama from the terrace. Until the end of the last century, there were market stalls on the square, but now it is a symbol of luxurious life, where the cream of the city’s society and tourists gather at tables on the cobblestone street.
The main streets radiate from the Square and one of them, Camerelle, is replete with boutiques of the world's most famous brands. Take a break in the Square and visit the Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio, a small museum housing some 20,000 archaeological finds from the island.
Anacapri
At the foot of Mount Solaro, a 15-minute bus ride from the Square, is Anacapri - the largest commune of the island, a whirlwind of colorful streets and alleys, squares and beaches.
It is from here that the cable car goes to the top of Mount Solaro, and Pagliaro Street leads to the Cote d'Azur Grotto. If you love wildlife and want to see a magnificent view of the sun setting into the sea, you need to climb Cape Carena (Punta Carena) and its famous Lighthouse (Faro), the tallest in Italy after the Genoese one.
Anacapri also has one of the most beautiful churches in the Neapolitan Baroque style - the Church of St. Michael the Archangel (Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo), where the floor is paved with glazed tiles depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. Another attraction that cannot be missed is the Red House (Casa Rossa), the former home of American Colonel John Makoven. Nowadays there are collected paintings depicting island of Capri and Anacapri, written in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as archaeological finds from the Cote d'Azur Grotto.
Island of Capri - beaches
Quite rocky and there are no large sandy beaches, but there are many ledges from which it is good to dive into the charming transparent depths of green and blue. Capri has both wild beaches and equipped ones - with umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, bars and restaurants.
In the port area, Marina Grande, in a rocky bay, the largest beach of the island is open. There is a wild and equipped area. At the opposite end of the island is Marina Piccola, which can be reached on foot or by bus. Lovers of amazing sunsets should visit the Mayak area.
Sightseeing tour around Capri
The best way to enjoy the beauty of the island is to take a boat on a sightseeing tour around the island. They happen quite often, lasting an hour or two. Most of them include a stop at the Cote d'Azur Grotto (for a fee). The voyage starts from Marina Grande and takes us clockwise, passing important points such as Villa Jovis and the High Rocks. Naturally, all this time, the uniquely beautiful landscapes of lush vegetation and dazzling rocks will not escape your gaze.
What to try in Capri
When talking about Capri, one cannot fail to mention the island’s essential products: tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil, salt, oregano, basil. Capri cuisine is simple and at the same time unforgettable. Capri homemade ravioli with cheese and marjoram, linguine with fish sauce, lots of fish and seafood, such as squid with potatoes and mussel soup, as well as Capri almond and cocoa cake and Limoncello liqueur.
Where to spend the night in Capri
Certainly, island of Capri has the reputation of not being the cheapest island, but in the off-season you can spend the night in small bed-and-breakfast hotels at reasonable prices. It is clear that during peak season and in expensive hotels prices are alarmingly high. Prices are also influenced by the view from the windows and proximity to the social places of the island (Square, shopping streets). But overall there is a lot of choice: prices start from around 90 euros per night for a double room with breakfast included.
The island of Capri can easily claim the title of one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Its first eminent connoisseur was the Roman Emperor Tiberius, who spent the last years of his life here. Later, famous writers, artists, musicians, and poets repeatedly praised Capri in their works. Many directors chose this island as the setting for their films.
If the route of your trip to Italy passes through, namely through, it is worth making time to visit island of Capri, which is just a stone's throw from here. A boat trip departing from the port of Naples every hour will take no more than 40 minutes, and even less - only 20 minutes. From Ischia the sea journey will last about 40 minutes.

Marina Grande in Capri is considered the central harbor
The total area of the island of Capri is only about 10 square meters. km, and it is quite possible to walk around it in a day. There are two cities on the island. The eponymous Capri, with a population of 8 thousand people, is considered the capital of the island and is located on the eastern side. The second city, Anacapri, with 7 thousand inhabitants, is located in the west. In addition, the island has two harbors: Marina Grande (central) and Marina Piccola.
Weather and climate
Thanks to the mild climate, moderate temperatures (in the summer months it rarely goes above +25 +29 C) and rare precipitation, tourists visit the island all year round. The best time to travel to Capri is late spring and early autumn, when the sun is not so active and there are relatively few tourists.
Transport in Capri
Upon arrival on the island, tourists are usually dropped off at port Marina Grande, from where you can get to the center by bus or funicular. The latter is located in Piazza della Vittoria, which is a stone's throw from the port itself. The funicular (1907) is equipped with comfortable carriages that will take you to the observation deck located at an altitude of 138 m. The length of the entire route along which the funicular follows is 650 meters. You can also get to the viewpoint by a nice open-top municipal bus or by walking.

Capri
From Maria Grande, public transport will take you directly to the central square of the capital of Capri - Piazzetta Umberto I, which locals affectionately call “little”, and the famous English novelist Norman Douglas called the smallest in the world. As in any other city, life is always in full swing on the main square: there are many expensive boutiques, cozy cafes and bars, and numerous entertainment programs are held especially for tourists.
The square offers a wonderful view of the Clock Tower and the 14th century palace. Cerio, the snow-white Church of Santo Stefano and the Monastery of San Giacomo from the 14th century, in which Baroque frescoes are well preserved, a shelter for wanderers and other monasteries.
Guests of the island are fascinated by the rich, almost blue color of the sea, the transparency of the water in some places reaches 8-10 m. Numerous turquoise bays and gray stone colossi Faraglioni(Faraglioni), growing straight out of the water, have long become an integral part of the Capri landscape.

And also the white rocks and bright greenery of Mediterranean bushes, vineyards, olives, flowers and herbs that abound on the island.
This is especially noticeable in "Gardens of Emperor Augustus"(Giardini di Augusto) - a public park on the south side of the island. This fabulously beautiful, well-groomed and fragrant garden was laid out in the 19th century by the German steel industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp, who, in addition to steel, was seriously interested in biology.
It was on Krupp’s initiative that one of the longest, winding, and, frankly speaking, dangerous streets of Capri (1350m) was built, which was named after him - Via Krupp. Past the monastery of St. Jacob along it you can walk to the Marina Piccola pier and one of the best beaches on the island.
If you want to take pictures or simply admire the sea views, it is worth walking to Belvedere Cannone, which is reached via Via Madre Serafina, or to Belvedere Tragara along Via Camerella.
Krupp Street is one of the longest, winding, and dangerous streets in Capri.
It cannot be said that the sea is the only thing for which armies of thousands of tourists come to Capri. The island is rich in museums, archaeological sites and historical sites. The museum, named after Ignacio Cerio, tells the entertaining history of the island; The Certosa San Giacomo has preserved valuable archaeological finds; the ruins of Villa Jovis will reveal just how grandiose the imperial residences were. And a unique architectural monument of the last century is the red Villa Malaparte(Villa Malaparte) - was used as a setting for the film “Contempt” with the participation of Brigitte Bardot (1963).
Anacapri
From the seaport of Marina Grande you can walk to Anacapri by climbing 921 steps. Phoenician stairs, carved into the rock by the first settlers of the island (VII-VI centuries BC). According to the experience of local residents, the ascent takes about 1.5 hours of leisurely walking, but the descent, of course, will be much faster - in 40 minutes.
In addition, in Anacapri there is a cable car, which you can use to climb the main peak of the island - Mount Solara, 589 m high, offering a picturesque panorama.
IN Anacapri it is worth visiting the Church of Santa Sofia to see the floor made of majolica slabs depicting a biblical story on the theme “The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise”, made in 1761, as well as frescoes of the 18th-19th centuries, a marble iconostasis inlaid with ornamental stones, and wooden painted altars.
From Anacapri you will reach the Imperial Villa Damecuta, built during the time of Tiberius and abandoned by its inhabitants after the eruption of Vesuvius (ca. 79).
Blue Grotto and Faraglioni
Not far from the imperial villa there is also Blue Grotto(Grotto azzurro), whose length is 56m and width 30m. The grotto is the emblem and symbol of the island of Capri.
Its discoverer in 1826 was the German poet August Kopsch. You can only get to the Blue Grotto by water by boat, and it owes its name to the extraordinary play of colors inside it. Sunlight, passing through the water and reflected in it, creates multi-colored, rainbow-colored lights that illuminate the walls, and objects placed in the water acquire a silvery tint. Statues of Poseidon, Triton and other ancient artifacts of archaeological value were found in the caves of the grotto.
The Blue Grotto was opened in 1826
Three limestone colossi Faraglioni(Faraglioni), rising from the depths of the sea to heights of 111m, 104m and 81m, are locally called the “Sons of Capri”, and they are also the symbol of the island.
