  • Last minute tours to Montenegro

Behind the romantic and exotic name Montenegro hides a familiar Slavic soul - Montenegro. Small and friendly, this country is always popular primarily among fans of budget and environmentally friendly holidays. And its similarity with Crimea (though sometimes not with the best sides of the peninsula, for example, its hotel base) makes Montenegro homely and cozy.

Montenegro is chosen by unpretentious tourists who value relaxation alone with nature. Lovers of peace and quiet, families with children and those who do not want to spend all their savings on vacation will be pleased with their trip to the country: prices in Montenegro are quite affordable. In addition, a truly warm welcome awaits nudists in the country, for whom there are special beaches and coastal complexes.

Regions and resorts of Montenegro

Montenegro is very compact - in less than a day you can drive from one end of the country to the other by car.

Budva Riviera is the tourist center of Montenegro with sandy beaches, impressive architecture and entertainment for every taste. The main resort of this area is Budva, one of the most venerable cities on the Adriatic. Becici, which is 3 km from Budva, is very popular. The city is famous for its 2 km long pebble beach. Petrovac is a place in a bay with a red-pebble beach and a whole collection of ancient monuments. Sveti Stefan is the most prestigious Montenegrin resort, built up with fashionable hotels. In the 15th century, a fortress was built here to protect the city from pirates. In the mid-20th century, it turned into a chic city-hotel where Hollywood stars like to relax.

Other resorts of the Budva Riviera: Rafailovichi, Milocer, Przno, Bar, Sutomore.

The Hercegnovskaya Riviera is located in the north of the Adriatic Sea. The largest resort in the area, Herceg Novi, is ideal for a family holiday. There is stunning nature and good boarding houses - many come to Herceg Novi to improve their health. Another popular resort on the Gergegov Riviera is Tivat. For most tourists, this is where Montenegro begins - one of the international airports is located here. The city cannot boast of ancient architecture and rich history. Guests are attracted by the mild climate, good beaches and developed infrastructure. During peak season, Tivat can be too crowded.

The Ulcinj Riviera is famous for its good and at the same time very affordable hotels, always sunny weather and basalt beaches. There are only 2 resorts here: Ulcinj itself and the picturesque island of Ada Boyana - one of the most famous holiday destinations for naturists.

Two small ski resorts of Montenegro: Zabljak and Kolasin. It won't be boring in the Zabljak resort even in summer. Tourists here are offered a full range of activities: from hiking tours and summer rafting to horse riding and paragliding.

A complete list of cities in the country can be found on the page Cities and resorts of Montenegro.

Cuisine and restaurants

Montenegrin eateries can be safely divided into 2 categories: “local” taverns and tourist restaurants. The first ones serve traditional Montenegrin food, cook deliciously and are not greedy - the portions in such establishments are simply huge. Secondly, the plates are smaller, the food is worse, but there is a wonderful view from the terrace. Needless to say, you can get acquainted with the traditional cuisine of Montenegro in those very simple family taverns. They are located in non-tourist areas, away from the beach. The owners, as a rule, cook themselves and serve the best chorba (fish soup made from several types of fish) and mixed meso (cold meat) in the area. A hearty lunch will cost about 35-50 EUR for two.

Beach establishments usually have good fish dishes and Italian food. In general, Italian restaurants are very popular in Montenegro, and the pizza in them is usually no worse than in Italy itself. In addition to pizzerias, Chinese and Thai establishments are common.

Montenegrin wines, although little known on international markets, deserve attention. The calling card of local winemaking is the tart Montenegrin “Vranac”, as well as “Krstac”, “Chardonnay” and “Sauvignon”. The highest quality strong drink is “Krunak” (grape vodka).

Entertainment and attractions of Montenegro

An attentive and inquisitive tourist will be able to find a considerable number of interesting sights in Montenegro. After a visit to Montenegro, everyone will certainly have a photograph of the island of St. Stephen (the calling card of the country) and the Ostrog monastery in their album. There will be beautiful views from both the Bay of Kotor and the Kotor observation deck. Other ancient cities of Montenegro - Budva, Herceg Novi, Ulcinj or the former capital Cetinje - are also generous with ancient buildings, churches and monasteries.

A must visit, the largest and cleanest in the Balkans, with pelicans and rare karan fish. On small islands there is a complex of monasteries from the 14th-15th centuries - many of them are active and welcome guests. At the top of the Lovcen mountain range is the Mausoleum of Petar Njegos, the ruler and educator of Montenegro.

Holidays and Events

Montenegrins are big fans of festivals. Yes, with dancing, singing and a mountain of food. In addition to traditional public and religious holidays like Christmas and New Year (by the way, the Old New Year is also celebrated here on a grand scale), many large and small festivals take place in different parts of the country. The bulk of the national festivities occur during the summer tourist season.

At the end of July, in the northeast of the country, in Plav, the blueberry festival begins and lasts exactly a week. A large olive fair opens in Tivat at the beginning of August. At the end of the month in Petrovac they overeat on fish, drink wine and say goodbye to the summer. North of Petrovac, in Beran, meanwhile, there is a honey festival. And in the gastronomic village of Njegushi, the end of August is the time for tasting cheese, prosciutto and other delicacies.

Montenegro is proud of its carnivals. The largest ones take place in February and August in Kotor. A little less - in April in Budva.

Almost every month is marked by a couple of cultural events: in April, theatergoers come to Herceg Novi. The international music festival A Tempo takes place in Podgorica around the same time. A traditional television festival is expected in Bar in May. In summer there is an international dance festival in Budva. Cetinje is famous for its 4-day summer jazz festival. Every year Herceg Novi hosts a big film festival and a hip-hop festival. Both events are scheduled for August.

The largest sporting event is the Podgorica Marathon, in which amateur athletes can take part. In winter, several ski festivals are held in Kolasin and Zabljak.

3 things to do in Montenegro

  1. Visit the artificially created island of Bogoroditska Skrpjela, where there is a unique church.
  2. Compare the domestic Mausoleum with the Montenegrin Mausoleum of Prince Petar Njegos, located on the top of Mount Lovcen.
  3. Conquer hunger once and for all in the gastronomic paradise of the village of Njegusi, which is famous for its especially aromatic cheeses and smoked pork hams. There is a monastery of gluttons near the town of Cetinje.

The beach strip of Montenegro occupies only 73 km, which is relatively small compared to neighboring countries. The small size is compensated by the abundance of greenery, stunning views and the pace at which the tourism sector and cities are developing.

The coastal towns of Montenegro have turned into world-famous resorts; even having been there only once, it is impossible not to fall in love with them. The coast can be roughly divided into three parts: northern, central and southern.

Let's look at the main resorts and cities, moving from north to south. The first on our way will be the Hercegnovskaya Riviera, uniting cities located on the shores of the Bay of Kotor.

Herceg Novi – the gates of the bay

This city of Montenegro is often called the country's botanical garden. Every street and courtyard amazes with the abundance of greenery, and there are very rare specimens, for example, eucalyptus trees.

The most interesting plants in the city can be found in the park, where a dozen species of mimosa grow among their tropical counterparts. This tree marked the beginning of the "Mimosa Festival", held annually in winter and lasting a whole month (February).

A significant contribution to the appearance of the city was made by its location on the slope of Mount Orjen. The houses slope down to the sea in terraces, and the winding streets often turn into steps. Local residents sometimes measure the distance to the sea in terms of steps and call Herceg Novi “the city of a thousand steps.”

In the west of the city, one can highlight the resort of Igalo, which is popular as a place for recreation and wellness. The special microclimate has a healing effect; procedures are carried out here using local mineral waters and mud.

The Igalo health complex is considered the largest on the coast of Montenegro. The center's programs are designed to treat most ailments, and the rest of the time you can simply enjoy your vacation.

The beaches in the city of Herceg Novi are mostly concrete; sandy and pebble beaches can be easily reached by water. The cost of a ticket for a boat going to the island of Mamula and the Lustica peninsula is about 3 euros, and the sail to them is only 20 minutes.

On the peninsula there is one of the best sandy beaches in the region, Zanjica, nearby the blue cave - a famous natural wonder of Montenegro. Divers dive into sunken ships and underwater caves.

After having plenty of rest by the sea, you can visit the nearby attractions. Right in the center of Herceg Novi there are towers, fortifications and bastions that have been converted into open-air theaters and stages. Large churches were built on two central squares: Archangel Michael and St. Jerome. The city is home to the Savina Monastery with a thousand-year history.

Kotor and Perast – Italian heritage

One of the ancient cities, built during the Roman Empire. However, the greatest influence on the architecture, cuisine and customs of Kotor came from the Venetian Republic, which ruled the city for more than three centuries.

Entering the Old Town, securely covered by fortress walls, you plunge into the atmosphere of medieval Italy: houses, cathedrals and monuments make up a real labyrinth located on the very slope of the mountain.

The entire historical center of the city is included in the UNESCO heritage, as it has survived to our time in the most authentic condition. But once you step outside of this world that has fallen out of time, you find yourself in a fairly modern resort in Montenegro with a beautiful embankment and a port filled with yachts.

Tourists are attracted to Kotor not only by a beach holiday, because there are few beaches, and the water in the bay cannot be compared with the purity of the open Adriatic Sea. But the landscapes of one of the largest bays are so spectacular that you can travel along the coast on foot or by car all day long to see even more breathtaking panoramas.

Despite its miniature size, the city is very popular among politicians and celebrities. Besides the embankment, Perast has only one street and several dozen houses. These dwellings have a certain fame because even if the house is uninhabitable, it is bought for millions. The stars do not skimp when it comes to their peace.

Getting to this city is not so easy. The easiest way to get there from Kotor is by renting a car or boat. You can take a bus that runs between Kotor and Risan, but there is not even a stop in Perast, so disembarkation occurs almost on the fly. It is best to take a tour of the Bay of Kotor, then you will see the most beautiful panoramas of the city and neighboring islands with churches and a monastery.

Tivat – let’s get to know each other better

It is here that the vast majority of flights with vacationers arrive, who immediately leave for other resorts in Montenegro. As a result, everything is remembered as an intermediate milestone on the way to the sea or excursions.

If you still stay and explore the city, you will be amazed at how attractive it is for a beach holiday and rich in attractions. For a long time the city lived its own life, and only in recent decades has its rapid development begun.

One of the best new acquisitions is undoubtedly the new pier - the Porto Montenegro area, to which the most beautiful yachts flock from all over the Adriatic. A huge selection of beaches right in the city, along with a mild climate, availability of entertainment and reasonable prices, definitely deserve attention.

Budva Riviera

The largest, central part of the coast of Montenegro is occupied by the Budva Riviera, consisting of Budva itself and neighboring cities and resorts: Becici, Rafailovici, Sveti Stefan, etc. The main stream of tourists flocks here, and each is attracted by something different.

Young people spend their nights in discos and clubs, admirers of historical and religious monuments devote most of their holidays to excursions to the city’s many attractions, parents bring their children to the cleanest small-pebble and sandy beaches.

Budva is an entertainment center, growing every year under the “onslaught of tourists.” During the season, the streets, beaches and all establishments are crowded. An additional influx of tourists is provided by numerous festivals and concerts.

The advantages of this resort: clean beaches on the coast framed by greenery and mountains, a variety of entertainment at any time of the day or night, delicious international cuisine. And all this at very affordable prices!

Located just 3 km south of bustling Budva, the city will be an excellent holiday solution for families with children. The widest beach is covered with such small pebbles that it looks like sand.

At the same time, the water remains transparent, since the pebbles lie quietly on the bottom without interfering with the view. The entry into the sea is gentle, so you don’t have to worry about the safety of your kids while swimming.

In addition to a relaxing holiday, Becici offers active sports. The resort is visited by world stars during the annual beach soccer championship. If you're looking for a relaxing holiday, take a walk along the promenade connecting the two cities and you'll find yourself in the thick of entertainment. You can also get to Budva on a special train that runs along the hotels; a ticket will cost only 1.5–2 euros.

The cities of Montenegro are becoming increasingly popular over time as places of relaxation or solitude. Becici in the south flows into another small town - Rafailovici.

There are many similar small resorts, formerly fishing villages, some are located in secluded bays or hidden by dense groves, like Przno, Sutomore and Petrovac. Moreover, each town in Montenegro is unique and will definitely find its fans.

If anyone has not heard of St. Stephen, they have probably seen him in photographs. This is an island connected by a thin isthmus to the land, where each house has been turned into luxury apartments. This is where eminent guests come to relax away from the bulk of vacationers. Privacy is guaranteed by security, allowing only those who live there to enter Sveti Stefan. Fans of prestigious holidays will also be interested in Milocer.

Bar and Ulcinj

Among other cities in Montenegro, Bar stands out - a city primarily known as a port. It is from here that ferries depart, the bulk of which arrive in the Italian city of Bari.

There are Old and New Bar. There are many historical monuments in the Old, and the New is an excellent place for lovers of shopping and entertainment. Add gardens and olive groves surrounding the city, sandy beaches, and you get a multifaceted resort.

The southern part of the coast of Montenegro consists of the city of Ulcinj itself and the island of Ada Boyana. The latter is especially famous for two things: its nudist beach and the healing properties of its black sand for women.

The city of Ulcinj is quite large by the standards of Montenegrin settlements. It attracts with a rich entertainment program, a long swimming season and attractions.

I would like to pay special attention to the long Big and Small beaches, stretching along the sea. They are covered with pebbles and sand, so everyone will find a convenient entry into the water.

For many, it will be a discovery that there are two ski resorts in Montenegro: Kolasin and Zabljak. Both are located in the north of the country and are constantly developing, catching up to the level of other European ski centers. So whatever type of holiday you prefer, Montenegro will have something to offer!

Montenegro is famous for its hospitality and love of relaxation. Montenegrins even have a special set of rules that say that “All illnesses come from work, don’t die young,” but “If you see that someone is working, do not bother him, if you see that someone is resting, help him.” .
Therefore, it is no wonder that in a glorious country, where everyone is driven by the love of relaxation, you need to spend your vacation. Or give yourself a little respite from business and worries by going to one of the Montenegrin resorts for the weekend. Citizens of Russia and the former CIS countries do not need a visa to Montenegro, and the direct flight takes no more than three hours.

When is the best time to go to Montenegro

Best seasons for holidays in Montenegro:
beginning of May – end of June– many Europeans, low prices. The air warms up to +28 - +30 degrees, and the sea + 18 - +19 degrees. You can already swim on the 20th of May.
until mid-July– great weather and prices for accommodation.
mid-July – end of August- high season. Everything is consistently good: the weather, the sea, and only prices in restaurants increase by 5-10 euros.
September- the Velvet season. The weather is still comfortable and warm, even in early October you can still swim, but the evenings become cool. And, as a result, everything becomes cheaper, from the cost of accommodation to prices in cafes.
By the way, about prices in restaurants. In high season, a trip to a restaurant located on the coast will cost 20-25 euros per person with drinks, if you order meat dishes, with seafood dishes 35 euros. The same menu, but within the city it will be 10-12 euros cheaper.

Montenegro is a fairly easy country to travel on your own, but sometimes buying a tour can save you a little money. There are usually few last-minute offers to Montenegro, it’s a matter of luck. Here are some current offers that are posted on the portal Top Travel Agent:

You will receive several options - an objective picture, after which you will decide to buy tour to Montenegro or book everything yourself.

How to get to Montenegro

Flights in Montenegro are accepted by two international airports located in the capital - Podgorica and the resort town - Tivat. There is a direct flight to Tivat without transfers Montenegro Airlines.

PRICE COMPARISON FOR AIR TICKETS TO TIVAT

Both airports on the coast are easily accessible by taxi. From Tivat airport to Budva the cost of a taxi ride is about 20 euros. From Podgorica to Budva, a taxi will cost from 30 to 50 euros, depending on the company chosen. The most profitable option in Tivat Red Taxi(tel: 068 - 0 - 19729) - landing 50 euro cents, kilometer - 80 euro cents, in Podgorica - Red line(tel: 068 - 0 - 19714) - the cost of a trip from the airport to Budva is 30 euros, to Ulcinj - 45 euros.
If you plan not to sit in one place, but to travel around Montenegro and beyond, for example to Dubrovnik, it is profitable to rent a car. The average rental cost per day is 40 euros; many car rental companies take a cash deposit from 150 to 300 euros.

Features of a beach holiday in Montenegro

In Montenegro, all beaches are considered municipal, which means free access to the sea, but you will have to pay from 5 to 7 euros for sun loungers and umbrellas. The exception is the most beautiful Montenegrin beach - Queen's Beach, only guests can relax on it Villa Milocer. Two more beaches are “partially” accessible to vacationers in Montenegro: King's Beach, where you can sunbathe only if you must rent a sun lounger and an umbrella for 75 euros per day, as well as east beach on the island of Sveti Stefan, where those who want to swim will have to pay 50 euros for two sun loungers and an umbrella, otherwise they simply will not be allowed to soak up the beach.
But the cost of a sun lounger on the beach for the price of a daily stay in a hotel is not at all a reason to be upset. There are many beaches in Montenegro and, as mentioned above, they are free for everyone and you can choose to your taste: from the shores of Croatia to the Bay of Kotor - Duke-Nova Riviera with rocky beaches, the middle part of the Montenegrin coast - Budva Riviera with a pebble coast, and the southern part of Montenegro, from the city Ulcinj – “Big Beach” with gray volcanic sand, 13 kilometers long.

The westernmost resort is Igalo. It is of interest primarily to those who want to improve their health. On the territory there is a medical institute named after. In 1957, the island was chosen by artists Peter Lubarba and Milo Milunovic, who bought the island’s lands from the fishermen who inhabited it and opened a city-hotel on Sveti Stefan. Since then, the island has become synonymous with luxury holidays: pink sand, warm waters and perfectly preserved medieval architecture have enchanted everyone who has visited Sveti Stefan. Sophia Loren, Sylvester Stallone, Kirk Douglas, Willie Brant, Claudia Fischer loved to relax on the island, and even Leonid Brezhnev did not deny himself the pleasure of hiding from prying eyes among the luxury of the Montenegrin resort.

Kotor
One of the popular resorts in Montenegro is Kotor. It is located in a picturesque location on the shores of the Bay of Kotor, at the foot of Mount Lovcen. Kotor is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is considered one of the best preserved cities of the Middle Ages.
The mild Mediterranean climate, a large number of sunny days a year, uniquely beautiful nature and many monuments of medieval architecture attract more and more tourists here every year.
Over the 20 centuries of its existence, Kotor changed 20 rulers, survived 4 terrible earthquakes, withstood sieges many times, the plague did not spare it, sailors and captains often did not return from their voyages. However, in spite of everything, churches and palaces were built, works of art were created, books were written.
More than 2000 years ago, an Illyrian settlement arose here. The ancient Romans called it Decoteron. Then the city alternately became part of the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, and the Serbian state. It is located on a triangle of land between the sea, the Shkurda River and Mount St. Ivan, on which he is located Fortress of San Giovanni. The city is divided into Old and New. The new part of Kotor is located near the sea, and the old part is surrounded by fortress walls. The fortress walls began to be built by the Roman Emperor Justinian in the 5th century, but were finally completed by the Venetians. The old city looks like a small labyrinth, but it is difficult to get lost in it. The Venetians left the deepest traces in its development.
Kotor became a thriving center of maritime trade back in the 12th century. under the Serbian king Stefan Nemanja. Things went so well that the city managed to turn into what would now be called a “free economic zone”, i.e. into an independent commune with its own currency and a ruling council of elders. In the XIV century. The Serbian kingdom weakened, and inexorable Turkish troops began to advance from the east. By 1420, Kotor had to surrender to the mercy of its longtime jealous rival, Venice, which had long been trying to find a way to subjugate this overly successful port. Despite the loss of independence, the city continued to flourish under the Venetian authorities. Local aristocratic families grew rich and acquired palaces, many of which have survived to this day, despite numerous earthquakes.
The current Old Town is a typical Mediterranean city with narrow streets and spacious squares, numerous churches and palaces. It acquired its current appearance after the Venetians restored it after a terrible earthquake in the 17th century, which completely destroyed many Adriatic cities, including Kotor and Dubrovnik. The Venetian period is indicated by numerous images of the Venetian lion on the walls and facades of the city.
The entrance to the Old Town is through the city gate Porto Marino. Above them is an inscription that can be translated as “We don’t need someone else’s, but we won’t give up ours either.” The image of the lion is replaced with the date of the city's liberation during World War II. These are already signs of a new time.
Through the gate you immediately get to Armory Square with the Clock Tower and the pillory in front of it. The city tower (early 17th century) also served to monitor the bay in the Middle Ages. It is slightly inclined to the west. This is the result of numerous earthquakes.

What to see:
- The clock on the south side of the tower was installed by the French during their occupation of Kotor at the beginning of the 19th century. In the city, images of lilies are often found on buildings. These are also traces of Napoleonic times. The City Assembly building was used as a theater by the French, which is why it is now often called the Napoleonic Theater.
-
The square also contains Karampana well– a traditional meeting place for city residents.
-
There are seven churches in Kotor: Chapel of Our Lady of Health(it was built by residents who survived the plague epidemic), Church of St. Mary, St. Mary's Cathedral Tryphon(IX century, it contains the relics of St. martyr Tryphon, frescoes of the 15th century are also preserved), the church of St. Luke (XII century), Church of St. Nicholas(early 20th century), Church of St. Anna (XII century), Church of St. Mikhail(IX century).
-
Maritime Museum, Bisanti Palace(XVII century), Pima Palace (XVI century)
- Princely Palace ( VII century)
- Palace of Drago (XV century).

St. Tryphon - patron saint of seafarers of Boka Kotorska. Local legend tells us that in 809, sailors carried his holy relics, returning from a campaign in Asia Minor. A strong storm continued for several days, and they decided to take refuge in the Bay of Kotor. Residents of the city decided that St. Tryphon does not want to leave these places, because... the storm did not stop. Therefore, the wealthy townsman Saracenis bought the relics from the Venetians and placed them in a specially built small church. Later, a monumental cathedral was erected in the city, which was rebuilt several times, but the relics of the holy martyr (a casket with relics and a silver cup with the head of St. Tryphon) always remained in it. There, in the cathedral, there is a sarcophagus in which the honorary citizen of Kotor Andrea Saracenis is buried.
During the terrible earthquake of the 17th century. The cathedral towers collapsed, and debris covered many houses and even the prince's palace. The prince and his family died under them.
In the middle of the 17th century. Orthodox refugees from the Grbalj Peninsula, captured by the Turks, appeared in the city. The Venetian Catholic nobility not only provided them with refuge, but also allowed them to hold Orthodox services in the ancient Church of St. Luke. A second altar was built in this church, and until the beginning of the 19th century. Both Catholic and Orthodox services were held there in parallel.
The sights of Kotor are interesting both from the point of view of the history of architecture and from the point of view of the history of Montenegro. The walk will be instructive, although short - all of them can be viewed from the outside within half an hour. You can also go inside one of the buildings - Gergurin Palace.
The fortification system of Kotor, which protects the city from the sea, is a historical heritage and is under the protection of UNESCO. It is a well-preserved wall 4.5 km long, 20 m high and about 15 m thick.
