Today we will tell you about our bed and breakfast experience. This spring, due to extended May holidays I had a strong desire to go on vacation to Rome. A few years ago we were there, but only 3 days, and for Rome this is nothing. The tickets we bought were already quite expensive, but without transfers.

When we started looking at the hotels that were available for these dates, the only ones left were either decent, but expensive, or relatively affordable, but in terms of reviews and location, very bad.

Therefore, we decided to turn our attention to the so-called B&B, which means Bed and breakfast, i.e. bed and breakfast. I used to think that this was something completely primitive, but in fact, at least now, it turned out to be very decent housing, especially if you choose more expensive ones. True, this is already comparable to a hotel, but the housing itself will be much nicer and better.

We chose not very expensive options. Since we changed the number of our days in Rome, all the rooms in the first B&B ran out, we had to look again and book a second one. Today's story will be about them.

In general, B&Bs usually have few rooms, maybe from one to 6-7. Therefore, you need to book very in advance. Just check that the reservation can be canceled in case of force majeure. So far we have only used booking among the booking sites.

The first bed and breakfast was located near the Vatican. It is called Domus Quiritum and consists of only 3 rooms. It is located in a residential building, apparently a former large apartment converted into a Bed and Breakfast. It's very nice and clean inside. You can use a common refrigerator in which you can store your food. The B&B also provides juices, yoghurts and fruits that you can snack on throughout the day. Breakfast is also included, but of course it’s small – croissant, cookies, coffee, juice. You can also make your own coffee throughout the day using the coffee machine located in the dining room. When we went out for breakfast, we were met by a nice girl with whom we could talk and learn Italian, because... I am interested in this language, I spent my time usefully while eating, trying to reproduce some phrases in Italian and understand what was said to me. The atmosphere is very relaxed, you feel almost like at home, not like in a hotel.

For some, the main disadvantage of staying at a bed and breakfast is that there is no reception as such - that is, no one is at your disposal 24 hours a day. It is necessary to inform in advance your arrival time so that they are waiting for you, since they only serve during breakfast, then no one will be here. You are simply given keys to the front door, the door to the Bed and Breakfast and your room.

The second B&B – Lofts in Rome, in which we had the opportunity to stay this time in Rome, was located near Piazza dei Fiori, in a very popular area. There were 6 rooms in total.

Its main disadvantage was the lack of windows, because... he was in almost a basement. There was an undoubted gain in price, since a hotel in this place, with similar conditions, would have cost us 1.5-2 times more. Breakfast here was larger, in addition to a croissant, it also included a sandwich with ham or cheese, although the quality of the products was worse. There was also free bottled water. You could also use a capsule coffee machine at any time, which, however, periodically broke down and ran out of coffee capsules. There were fruits too. Breakfast can be taken to your room and eaten without speaking Italian.

The room was on two levels, on the first floor there was a bathroom and a kitchen corner - a kettle, a refrigerator, a microwave, a table and a fake window :). On the second floor there is a huge bed, a wardrobe and a TV:

In general, the price-quality ratio, and especially the location, is very good; everything we wanted to see in this part of our stay in Rome was within walking distance. I don't regret that we stayed at this Bed and Breakfast, because we walked a lot and were always close to our accommodation.

Of the above, I liked the first B&B more, but overall I never regretted that we booked non-ordinary hotels this time.

If we talk about family-type hotels, which are also often called mini-hotels or guesthouses (“guest house” - guest house), then there are practically no differences. On the contrary, such hotels and B&Bs have much more in common. This is, as a rule, a “homely” atmosphere, starting with the interiors, often made in the traditional style of the region in which the hotel is located, and ending with the food, often close in essence to what is called “home cooking”. Let us again make a reservation that not everywhere and not always, but often. It is also important to note that such hotels, as a rule, do not have 24-hour reception desks. In practice, this means that you need to discuss in advance with the owners the time when you check in or check out from the hotel so that you don’t find yourself at closed doors upon arrival. After checking in, guests usually receive keys to their room and to the general entrance to the hotel, which are handed over upon departure.

As a matter of fact, this, in our opinion, is the main purely external difference from non-family hotels managed by hired managers. Such hotels most often have a 24-hour reception desk with a permanent receptionist. In these hotels everything is much more standardized and, as many believe, soulless. However, we will probably refrain from making judgments. Both “classic” hotels and bed & breakfasts have their pros and cons, and tourists are different - some prefer a homely environment and the opportunity to communicate directly with the hotel owners, while others are focused on greater isolation and privacy in emotional terms, so to speak. .

When comparing bed and breakfasts and hotels, one cannot help but touch upon the issue of cost of living. As a rule, prices in bed & breakfasts are lower than in hotels geographically located in the same area. For example, if you look at the prices for accommodation in the center of Rome, then almost all the most economical options are B&B.
