Vienna yellow or red bus. City transport in Vienna. day. Mount Kahlenberg and Klosterneuburg Monastery

We have been to the capital of Austria, the city of Vienna, with the whole family several times already. Once we came from Bratislava by train, the second time we flew by plane through Vienna Airport - Vienna-Schwechat.

In both cases, we stayed a day or two at most. But even these short visits left an indelible impression on all family members.

The main thing in this matter is to know the most interesting places in Vienna and not waste the allotted time in this beautiful city.

Video tour of Vienna

Arrival in Vienna:

The best way to get to Vienna is by public transport. On our first trip, we chose the train and got from Bratislava (Slovakia) to Vienna by train in almost 1.5 hours.

And we arrived at Vienna Central Station. At this time, it was just restarting, and there was a lot of construction equipment around.

To speed up our acquaintance with the city, we went to the Vienna Opera. But not to enjoy the tenors’ vocals or listen to a new production. It was here, not far from the Vienna Opera, that the Hop-on - Hop-off circular bus route began.

What is Hop-on Hop-off?

This is a special bus excursion tourist route. Buses constantly run around the ring; while driving, you can take headphones and listen to the tour in your language exactly where you pass.

In addition, you have the right to get off the bus, take a walk around the attraction that you really like and return to any next bus, which again goes around the ring. There are no restrictions on transfers. This format of introduction is convenient for tourists.

note, this option is available to you if you have chosen a day ticket for a day (24 hours) or more, therefore, short routes - 1 or 2 hours will not be available for transfers on the ring.

Similar Hop on Hop off routes operate in almost all major cities and capitals of Europe. We also met in this format in Paris, Budapest, even in Minsk.

There are 4 different route lines offered (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow):

Each route is distinguished by its protection and the presence of distinctive tourist reminders along the excursion.

You may argue that this is not convenient. A real tourist should thoughtfully familiarize himself with all the beauties.

I dare to object. I usually take the Hop-on Hop-off bus straight away to quickly learn and see where all the best spots are, and then slowly explore the highlights. It seems to me that this is the most convenient tool for all tourists.

You can easily recognize your bus stops by special markings in the shape of the letter H on a yellow background.

(PDF format)

The price of a ticket for the route depends on the length of the route - from 13 Euros to 25 Euros. Tickets can be purchased in cash, in Euros, or through a credit card, through a POS terminal from a service employee.

By the way, not far from where you board the bus there is a very piquant attraction :)

I certainly don't mean the famous Vienna Opera, namely the Vienna Opera Toilet with classically decorated booths and chamber music.

If you are already close to the Vienna Opera, do not forget to take a tour to see the most famous venue in Austria inside and from behind the scenes. You can find out the schedule of excursions on the Vienna Opera website - www.wiener-staatsoper.at

Entrance ticket price for the Vienna Opera excursion: adults - 7.50 Euros, children - 3.50 Euros.

Sightseeing video tour of Vienna by Hop-on Hop-off bus

An alternative option for quick travel for tourists around Vienna is the Vienna underground or metro. It's called - Wiener U-Bahn.

You can spot the Vienna Metro by the letter U at the underground entrance to the metro.

The Vienna metro has 5 lines with 104 stations and operates from 5 am to midnight.

Vienna metro prices: One trip costs 2.20 Euro. A 24-hour pass costs 7.60 Euro (I would recommend buying it if you're walking around the city). Travel price for 2 days is 13.30 Euro.

Map - Vienna Metro Scheme

By the way, a ticket for the Vienna Metro is also valid for other types of public transport: buses and trams.

The most famous sights of Vienna:

St. Stephen's Cathedral

This is the oldest Catholic cathedral, is the national symbol of Austria, and symbolizes Vienna. The cathedral is located in the center of the old town on St. Stephen's Square (Stephensplatz).

GPS coordinates of Stephen's Cathedral - 48°12’30.4″N 16°22’20.0″E

To get there by metro, stop “Stephansplatz”.

The history of the Cathedral begins almost a thousand years ago. Leopold IV, together with Reginmar, Bishop of Passau, founded the church in 1137. In the years 1230-1245, the church expanded, and a western “Romanesque” wall appeared.

Some time later, in 1258, the first church burned down. In 1263, a second church, also in the Romanesque style, was built on this very spot and consecrated on April 23. This birthday of the cathedral is still celebrated in Vienna.

The cathedral survived the wars and survived until 1945. Even bombing did not damage it during the war. Only the looters, who began to burn the looted shops, damaged the Cathedral. The fire spread to the Cathedral. All floors and the roof were destroyed. The cathedral was restored again in the 80s, and this continues to this day. The main problem of the restorers is the stone on the outer walls of the cathedral and sculptures that time has not spared. In order to somehow slow down the aging of the cathedral, the stones are replaced with similar ones, robots are carried out with original tools and using ancient technologies.

The most interesting things about the Cathedral:

There are 23 bells in the Cathedral. The largest of them, New Pummerin, weighing 21.3 tons, rings only 11 times only on major holidays. This is the second largest bell in Europe after Cologne.

The largest organ in Austria is located in St. Stephen's Cathedral. The organ includes 125 registers and 10 thousand organ pipes.

If you want to take a quick ride, you can take a cab right next to the Cathedral. There are a lot of them there, you can choose any one.

Hofburg (or in German: Hofburg)

This is the winter residence of the Austrian monarchs, the Habsburgs. Now, the official residence of the President of Austria.

The entire ensemble contains 2600 rooms and has already been mentioned since 1279. Constantly, the ruling dynasties completed construction and added something to the building.

The Hofburg can be easily reached by metro station Herrengasse.

The official website of the Hofburg is www.hofburg-wien.at

GPS coordinates of the Hofburg residence —48°12’23.4″N 16°21’50.3″E

Austrian Parliament Building (Hohes Haus)

This is one of the most popular buildings for tourist photo sessions. The Austrian Parliament building was built in neo-Greek style. The national and federal councils of Austria also meet here.

GPS coordinates of the Austrian Parliament - central entrance - 48°12’28.6″N 16°21’34.3″E

By the way, knowledge itself is available to tourists. You can find out more about possible tours of the Austrian Parliament on the official website - www.parlament.gv.at Ticket price - 5 euros, free for children.

The most famous sculptural group is the sculpture of Pallas Athena in a golden helmet with cupids and a fountain. This is the most central place for tourists to take photos, although the Parliament building itself stretches majestically along the street.

By the way, very close, a 2-minute walk, is the Vienna City Hall.

The Burgomaster's working quarters are located here. The building itself was built in neo-Gothic style

In winter, the Vienna Ice Dream skating rink is filled here ()

Burgtheater(Burgtheater)

By the way, almost opposite the city hall is located Burgtheater(Burgtheater) is a court theater in the Vienna Hofburg, which was established in 1741 by decree of Empress Maria Theresa.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Burgtheater was considered one of the most prestigious theaters in the German-speaking world.

The official website of the theater is www.burgtheater.at

City Park (Stadtpark)

Stadtpark was laid out in 1860; it is notable not only for its greenery and intricate paths, but also for the abundance of monuments and sculptures to outstanding personalities: Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert.

Getting to the city park is very easy - using the Vienna metro - get off at the stop of the same name - Stadtpark

The “golden” monument to Strauss is especially famous, copies of which have already been installed in China, Japan and even Cuba.

In addition, there is a special official Vienna website, where a special section is dedicated to this monument - www.wien.info/en/music-stage-shows/city-of-music/strauss-monument

Let's touch the brilliant music of Strauss together in this video.

Danube Tower (Donauturm)

Wherever you are in Vienna, you can always see this tall tower with a height of 252 meters. The tower itself is located on the banks of the Danube and is one of the popular tourist sites. Its observation decks offer a beautiful panorama of Vienna.

A little history: The tower was built in 1964 according to the design of the architect Hans Lintl during the Vienna Garden Exhibition.

The observation deck is located at an altitude of 150 meters. Get there using 2 high-speed elevators in 35 seconds. If you like thrills, there is a jumping structure on the site.
If you just want to have a comfortable time, you can visit two restaurants: “Panorama” and “Danube Waltz”, which are located on a rotating platform (a full rotation takes 26, 39 and 52 minutes to see the whole of Vienna).

By the way, this is not actually a TV tower. It is not used to transmit a TV signal, but only to transmit cellular signals or VHF radio stations.

Tour prices:

adults – 7.40 euros

children (6-14 years old) - 5.20 euros Children under 6 years old - admitted free of charge.

That's not all!

We managed to visit the Maritime Museum in Vienna, and of course, the oldest Schönbrunn Zoo in the world!

15 tips for tourists in Vienna

Every big city has its own world fame, its own philosophy, its own “reputation”. Paris is considered the capital of world bohemia. Barcelona is called the city of Gaudi, Valencia is known as the abode of arts and science. Vienna is a city of beautiful architecture, galleries and museums, and music.

The capital of Austria to this day remains imperial in spirit: calm and majestic. But at the same time it is democratic, cozy, and convenient for life. The cleanest water flows in the city water pipes, the streets and parks are well-groomed. For people with limited mobility, a “barrier-free” environment has been created. There is transport adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, and transparent elevators are installed in the buildings. There are no stray animals on the streets, people are polite, helpful and smiling.

Tourists should know about some of the city's features in order to see and learn more and spend less money. Here are some useful tips for visitors to Vienna.

1. Public transport

If you plan to stay in Vienna for more than two days, then you should figure out which travel ticket is more profitable to buy. I wrote about public transport tickets in Vienna and prices.

Please note that the Wochenkarte weekly pass is valid from Monday to Monday. An 8-day climate ticket (8-Tage-Klimakarte) with eight magnetic stripes is designed for 8 trips and is beneficial if you plan to intensively use transport for 6-8 days, or if you come with a family or a company (several people can travel on this ticket , you just need to validate one strip on the ticket for each).

Travel tickets are sold in vending machines near the metro, at train stations, and at Tabak-Trafik kiosks; They apply to all types of transport within the Kernzone.

2. Vienna museums and other attractions

Palace and park ensemble of Laxenburg, photo Corniger

Vienna has many museums of different types, free and paid. Visit (KHM), ; give them the whole day. Prepare in advance, find information about the Habsburg dynasty, read about Maria Theresa, Princess Sissi, Franz Joseph I.

Watch the equestrian ballet of the masters. The snow-white Lipizzaner show can be seen in. Visit, go to wonderful. Don't plan too many experiences, rather plan each day of your stay in Vienna.

Often discounted tickets can be found on these sites:

3. City tours

Start your acquaintance with Vienna with a sightseeing tour.

You can take the yellow Hop on Hop off bus, which has 4 route options. It stops in front of the Opera House (metro). For current and detailed information on schedules, routes and prices, see.

Double-decker sightseeing bus Big Bus Tours Vienna

The red excursion bus Big Bus Tours Vienna offers 2 travel options. Stops at the Vienna Opera. See schedule, routes and ticket prices.

The red bus Red Bus City Tours has 3 routes around Vienna. He stops behind the Opera House. See everything about the trip on it.

You can take a self-guided tour by tram along the circular route. There are 13 Vienna attractions located along it.

There are two ways to get to the Vienna Opera. Tickets can be ordered online and redeemed with a payment card. Keep in mind: Staatsoper is always sold out. It is better to take care of tickets for the most popular performances several months in advance. The cheapest seats are in the upper galleries; more convenient and inexpensive - in the 1st row of the balcony.

If you are tough enough to stand through the entire performance, buy entrance tickets. Standing places are located behind the stalls, almost opposite the stage. Such tickets are sold for all performances of the Vienna Opera before the start. I wrote in detail about the Vienna Opera and buying tickets.

5. To Bratislava

From Vienna to Bratislava by boat on the Danube

From Vienna you can go to Bratislava. However, it is much more interesting to travel along the river on a high-speed catamaran. You can take this cruise during the season from April to November. A trip on a catamaran is slightly more expensive than a train, but it is more fun. At 08:30 – to Bratislava, 18:30 – back. The trip to the capital of Slovakia will take about 1.5 hours. The vessel is comfortable, with good visibility. The catamaran departs from the Schwedenplatz metro station, goes first along the Danube Canal, then along the Danube, past fishermen's huts on stilts, with nets. I wrote about how to get from Vienna to Bratislava by ship.

In Bratislava, take a train ride through the old town, stroll along Plane Tree Square, and try national cuisine.

6. Viennese delicacies

You don't have to order a big and filling one if you're not too hungry. However, it is worth paying tribute to the incomparable.

7. Traveling around Austria

If time allows you, take a train to ,. And be sure to visit! It is more convenient to view tickets on the Russian-language version of the site. All tariffs are written there in Russian.

8. Housing and food

A room in a Vienna hotel will be quite expensive, but you can always find discounts on.

It is much more convenient to rent an apartment or a studio apartment online on AirBnb. You will receive all the benefits of independent living and will be able to cook your own meals. By the way, about the apartment for only €50.

It is best to buy products in Merkur or Hofer stores.

9. The most important thing

You can read about the sights of Vienna in my guide. If you have enough persistence and strength, climb the tower

I’m telling you how we traveled for 4 days in Vienna along all the routes of a double-decker excursion bus, and also took a river trip along the Danube. We saw all of Vienna, a little bit of the Vienna Woods. I’m sharing a way to stretch a 3-day ticket into 4 days!

Yellow Vienna Sightseeing sightseeing bus. We started the trip from stop 8 Augarden of the red line, we. We didn't have tickets in hand. We waited for the bus. We bought 2 tickets for 72 hours from the conductor, which included unlimited travel on all routes, a walking tour in English and 1 boat trip. We paid €43 for this pleasure. Without the boat, tickets would cost €29 for 48 hours.

How did we stretch the tickets over 4 days?

As you can see, tickets are not cheap at all. While still at home, I was racking my brains about what to buy: , or just tickets for a double-decker bus. I chose the latter + boat trip.

We extended the 72-hour ticket over 4 days. The first trip was at 18:00, which means the last one should be no later than 18:00 on the fourth day!

1 day – red route Red Line

This is the main route that connects all the others. As usual, we completed the first lap.

We climbed to the 2nd floor. In the evening it was already empty. Let's go with the breeze to the center of Vienna. These days we did not use ordinary city transport at all.

Headphones are provided upon entry. You connect them to the back of the front seat, select the desired language using the numbers, and that’s it – you just enjoy your trip around Vienna from the second floor.

These buses are called "Hop on Hop Off" - this means that you can get on and off at any stop. We saw something interesting, walked around, then caught the next bus. Central routes run very frequently, approximately once every 15 minutes.

And this is a famous one, where they hold classical concerts with dinner.

Standard for Vienna, but unusual for us - girls in dresses on bicycles (and sometimes even in heels!). Cyclists are the main road users in the city. They make disdainful noises or ringing noises when pedestrians walk along their paths.

We pass a stall with popular Viennese fast food - sausages, mustard and buns. When you have no money and want to eat, this is just the thing!

The Vienna State Opera is the keeper of the traditions of classical art, the symbol of musical Vienna, the largest opera house in Austria. The stop here is a little longer than usual. From here it is easy to walk to or to.

OU! Take it easy! We were overtaken by another symbol of Vienna - the famous old red tram.

Stands on Maria Theresa Square. Together with another building identical to it - I confuse them all the time.

We are crossing the Danube Canal for the second time, which means that the circle is coming to an end. Enough for today. We met with Vienna.

Day 2 – boat trip

Our ticket included only 1 trip on the boat, and there were several routes. We decided to ride to the maximum – on route A+B. I don’t quite understand whether it’s possible to get off and then get on the next flight.

First flight at 10:30. We decided to take a walk. The journey from the pier took about 30 minutes. The first step is to exchange the receipt for a full ticket at the ticket office on the 2nd floor, otherwise you will not be allowed on the flight.

There were quite a lot of people. We took a seat on deck 2 on a bench in the shade.

Our cheerful boat cuts through the waves of the Danube Canal.

Soon we will have to cross the floodgates. I remembered my childhood trips with my grandfather along the Kama and Volga. We have many gateways.

On the shore I saw a fast black boat. If you like extreme sports, then ride it along the Danube.

Meanwhile, we are passing the Danube City. The weather is great today!

The Viennese call it the Jubilee Church or - it was founded in the year of the 50th anniversary of the ascension of Franz Joseph to the throne, the temple is located on Mexikoplatz Square. My favorite church in Vienna.

Nice panorama of the Danube city. Visible on the left. We'll go there a little later.

The building with golden spherical domes, a tall chimney tower and colorful walls houses. As you can see, the style of the architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser can be seen here. He did not immediately agree to work on this project. As an avid advocate of the environment, Hundertwasser believed that garbage should not be burned, but rather recycled as much as possible and benefited from it. Vienna mayor Helmut Zilck had to assure that the heat from burning garbage would be used to heat enterprises and housing. The architect was also promised the strictest compliance with environmental safety measures at the new enterprise.

A very strange European habit is not to swim in rivers. The Viennese bring barges, fill them with chlorinated water and swim. But the green water in the Danube will be more pleasant and definitely less harmful. I don't understand them.

After a 4-hour cruise we headed to the center on a red line bus.

We walked around Schönbrunn Park for so long that we completely forgot about the bus schedule. The last bus leaves at 18:55.

Remember I told you how it’s possible? I ordered a taxi through the Uber app. I had a free trip there for €10 promo code q46rh81kue.

Mercedes Vita minibus arrived :-)

Day 3. Mount Kahlenberg and Klosterneuburg Monastery

Today we ride on the Green Line. Pay attention to the schedule. Buses run once an hour. And between the 1st and 2nd flight there is a 2 hour break. 10 minutes to stop. This is enough to run and take a photo. We decided to take a walk and got stuck for 2 hours. This time is too much! There's not much to do here.

On the outskirts of the Vienna district of Döbling there are two mountains - two neighboring peaks of almost the same height: Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg. We're on the second one now.

The Josefskirche Church in the memory of the Viennese is associated with the significant event of 1683. The Polish governor Jan Sobieski liberated Vienna, which was languishing under the siege of a 200,000-strong Turkish army. Sobieski launched his attack from Mount Kahlenberg, having previously celebrated mass in the mountain temple. At the entrance portal of the church there is a plaque confirming the historical fact. We met many Poles in the church.

484 meters – height of Kahlenberg; The TV tower rises 165 m above the mountain.

The place is touristic, so the number of people here is appropriate.

Wait another hour and a half for the next bus. We had a romantic snack in a cafe with a gorgeous panorama of Vienna.

Having nothing else to do, we went to the very top of Mount Kahlenberg - there is a TV tower and the Stefaniewarte tower. From this place you can’t see anything, no panorama. Let's move on...

Klosterneuburg is a suburb of Vienna, located at the very Vienna Woods and at the foot of the Leopoldsberg mountain. We only had an hour to explore the monastery. The place is very beautiful and well maintained. And what peace and tranquility there is here. A tour of the monastery is paid, but you can walk around and through some buildings for free. 1 hour is very little!

Satisfied that we somehow managed to catch the bus, we headed to the center of Vienna. On the way, you can stop by the heuriger in Grinzing and drink some wine.

On the Ringstrasse boulevard ring, all possible architectural styles will parade in front of you: the imperial residence of the Hofburg and the palaces of the “new aristocrats” of the 19th century, the “twin museums” - the history of art and natural history, the Parliament and the City Hall, the state...

An interesting and educational tour of Vienna for connoisseurs. During this short trip you will see all the main attractions of the Austrian capital.

On the Ringstrasse boulevard ring, all possible architectural styles will parade in front of you: the imperial residence of the Hofburg and the palaces of the “new aristocrats” of the 19th century, the “twin museums” - the history of art and natural history, the Parliament and the City Hall, the State Opera in Vienna, the Imperial Burgtheater, as well as the Baroque Karlskirche and the Viennese Secession - witnesses to the history and glory of the Danube Monarchy.

Next, the tour follows the embankment of the Danube Canal in Vienna, where one of the most original residential buildings in Europe is hidden - the so-called Hundertwasserhaus, created by the Austrian artist and architectural dissident Friedensreich Hundertwasser. To the side of the historical center lies the Prater Park, beloved by everyone who lives in Vienna, over whose crowns the red carriages of the Riesenrad Ferris wheel have floated, swaying and creaking with old wood, for more than a hundred years. The excursion will continue on the northern bank of the Danube - albeit beautiful, but, alas, not at all blue. UNO-City lives its own dynamic life - with the UN headquarters and skyscrapers reflecting the Danube waves.

The last point on the excursion route will be the former summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty - the Schönbrunn palace complex with its beautiful park, where you will have the opportunity to stay and independently explore the palace from the inside, visit the zoo and other attractions of Schönbrunn.
