Tired of lying on the beaches of Tenerife? Then I suggest you take a walk along the picturesque nature reserve, bearing the terrifying name - Hell's Gorge.

In fact, there is nothing scary in this gorge. The name Infierno, which means "Hell" in Spanish, local residents given to him to scare away strangers from the only drinking source on the island.

The popular Barranco del Infierno Natural Park is located in Adeje in the south of Tenerife, just 15 minutes drive from the main southern resorts– Las Americas and Los Cristianos and 10 minutes from Costa Adeje.

The area of the Barranco del Inferno reserve is about 1843 hectares. The steep walls of the gorge belong to mountain ranges Adeje and Teide. The rocky landscapes are beautiful all year round, but are especially impressive in winter. There is a narrow walking path along the gorge; fences have been built for safety. The route itself is considered uncomplicated; there are no sharp changes in elevation. There are several cool lookouts along the route.

The height of the landscape varies smoothly from 100 to 1300 m, so the gorge has several climatic zones, resulting in a variety of surrounding landscapes. During the trek, the path sometimes narrows and sometimes widens - you need to walk carefully. Along the road there are abandoned aqueducts that have been preserved since the colonization of Tenerife.

At the end of the route, at an altitude of 560 m, there is the only waterfall on the island - the source fresh water, spectacularly falling from a vertical stone barrier. In winter, when there is heavy rainfall, it becomes full-flowing and powerful.

We were there in November. The stream is very thin.

In general, the route is not difficult, allocate 2-3 hours for it.

Flora and fauna

The natural park is home to a variety of fauna, many birds - predators, Canary pigeons, partridges, hoopoes. Unique plants grow, some are endemic. Here, compared to the usual desert landscapes of the south of Tenerife, abundant tropical vegetation flourishes. In the thermophilic forest you can find dragon tree, palm trees, many cacti, sub-shrubs, and wild jasmine. At a level above 600 m, the grass cover almost disappears - Canarian pines grow there.

Traces of the past

Once upon a time, the Guanches lived in the gorge: traces of ritual images left by the Indians are preserved on the rock walls. Burials were discovered in the caves - the aborigines hid the mummies of their relatives in underground tombs. The gorge looks picturesque, but not intimidating.

Features of the tourist route

Since the gorge is of particular value to the island, access to it is limited. The only source of fresh water is located here. No more than 300 people can pass through here per day.

Sign up in advance

You need to book your excursion to Hell's Gorge in advance. This can be done on the website barrancodelinfierno.

When booking, you need to enter your details, note the start time and ticket price. You can pay on the natural park website or at the ticket office before the start of the route.

We didn't book anything, we just came and bought a ticket.

Basic Rules

  • children under 5 years old are not allowed;
  • children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult;
  • good shoes;
  • animals are not allowed into the reserve;
  • You must have identification documents with you.

We were asked for our passport number, first and last name. There are a lot of children on the route, some were clearly under 5 years old, so feel free to take the whole family.

Track characteristics

The beginning of the path is located at a level of 350 m. The length of the path laid along the left side of the gorge is 3.2 km in one direction, the elevation changes are about 200 m. You can walk it in about 3 hours - it consists of 7 stages of the path, marked with control points .

What else?

None special equipment Apart from comfortable non-slip shoes and a charged phone, you don’t need to take it to Hell’s Gorge - the route is considered easy. Before the start of the journey, a briefing is carried out; park employees record the tourists who went out on the trail in order to note at the end whether everyone returned safely.

Visiting Barranco del Inferno is allowed in good weather. When there is heavy wind and heavy rain, a storm warning is issued: excursions are cancelled, no one is allowed into the gorge - heavy rain can cause a rockfall, and this is dangerous. In case of unexpected weather changes, park staff inspect the paths and take enhanced safety measures.
