Particularly loved by tourists and local residents are:

Banj Beach

Located near the city center. Small pebbles, perfect for a family holiday - gently sloping, the sea here is usually very calm. On the beach and in the immediate surroundings there are many options for water and sports activities for holidaymakers - from tennis courts to paragliding.

Jadrija Beach

It is located outside the city, but with convenient transport links. Small pebbles, the descent into the water is steeper than at Baniya, but quite safe for children. The beach is surrounded by greenery, nearby there are cafes and small shops with everything you need. The beach has been open since 1921 and is known as a quiet place where you can sunbathe and swim in peace. True, there are no sun lounger rentals here.

Solaris Beach

This is the largest sandy beach of Sibenik. Located outside the city (8 km from the city limits), it is one of the best beaches not only in the surrounding area, but throughout Croatia. This four-kilometer beach is part of the Solaris Beach Resort complex. The shore is equipped with sun loungers, and vacationers of any age can enjoy a variety of water activities. Animators are working. After sunset, the beach turns into a walking area. Nearby are discos, bars, restaurants.

Not far from Terranea Beach, located in the suburbs, an annual open-air music festival is held. Terranea offers a magnificent view of the entire bay.

Rezalishte Beach is also famous - gently sloping, small pebbles, with calm water. Thanks to this, it is often chosen for families with small children. It is located not in Sibenik itself, but 6 km from it. This place can be recommended to everyone who loves a relaxing holiday and crystal clear sea.

A convenient transfer is organized to remote beaches - buses run at least once every half hour. Therefore, getting there is easy even for those who come with small children and do not plan to rent a car or taxi.

Photos of the beaches of Sibenik and throughout Croatia are mesmerizing with clean, transparent water. Most of the beaches here have been awarded the international Blue Flag award.

Krka National Park - seven amazingly beautiful, gentle waterfalls, the most interesting of all Croatian rivers - the Krka River, 860 species of plants and many flowers that organize “competitive tournaments” here, incessant songs of 222 species of birds and funny games of ugly, but still cute flying birds mice. And all this against the backdrop of sunny weather that never leaves these places.

The most famous waterfall in the park is Skradinski buk, flying from a height of 45 meters. The purest, foaming water flows through 17 cascades, forming many rather pretty lakes. The waters of the Krka and Cikola rivers merge at the waterfall. By the way, Skradinski Buk is the only waterfall in the bowl of which you are allowed to swim.

You are also allowed to explore dilapidated medieval fortresses, monasteries, Roman aqueducts and other ancient monuments located in the park.

Krka National Park

Krka National Park in Croatia, created in January 1985, is located along the river of the same name.

The river route leads to the sea through incredibly beautiful canyons. The river forms seven waterfalls, the last of which has an average flow of fifty-five cubic meters of water per second.

Krka Park is rich in flora and fauna. It is one of the most valuable ornithological areas in Europe due to the fact that it is home to two hundred and twenty-two species of birds.

You can visit the park either by boat or by car. For lovers of hiking, special walking routes have been developed. All you have to do is choose a method of transportation and go towards beautiful nature.

It is also interesting to visit the only falconry training center in Croatia, where you can feel like a real hunter.

Sibenik Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. James (also known as Sibenik Cathedral) was built over a hundred years. The foundation of the future cathedral was laid on the site of the old church in 1431. The main architect was Juraj Dalmatinets, under whose leadership the bulk of the work was done. Juraj worked on the cathedral until the end of his days - his hands created 74 sculptures that adorn the cathedral today. After Juraj's death, Nikola Florentiets continued the work. He moved away from the Gothic style towards the Tuscan Renaissance, designed the side galleries and erected the dome.

The Cathedral of St. James has survived to this day almost in its original form - it had to be restored only once, after the war in the Balkans.

The City Museum (Gradski Muzej) is located in the building of the Prince's Palace (Kne ei Dvor or Rector’s Palace). This magnificent Baroque palace was built in 1751 by the Eltz family. For a long time the palace remained a princely residence, but after the Second World War it was nationalized. A few years later, the palace was turned into a museum. In addition to rare furniture, the museum exhibited numerous pieces of art, coin collections, painting galleries, ancient documents, coats of arms and seals, and much more. Particular attention should be paid to the treasury of the Franciscan monastery.

In 1991, during the Yugoslav War, the museum building was badly damaged, and many art objects were hastily removed. Restoration work was carried out until 2001.

Main attractions. What to see

Šibenik was first mentioned under its current name in 1066 in the Charter of the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. For some time the city was the residence of the Croatian monarch. Therefore, Sibenik is sometimes called “Krešimirov grad”. It is the oldest city in Croatia on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Between the park and the embankment you can see the statue of King Petar Krešimir IV.

For more than 300 years, Sibenik was under the rule of Venice, then Austria-Hungary, Yugoslavia, and only then became part of Croatia. The city played an important role during the Turkish-Venetian wars and was the western border of Christian civilization. Since then, four beautiful fortresses have remained in Sibenik: St. Michael, St. John, St. Nicholas and Subicevac.

In the old part of the city there are many churches, old noble castles and ordinary Dalmatian stone houses that are several centuries old. The city walls have also been preserved. One of the most interesting attractions is the medieval monastery garden. The famous Croatian basketball player Drazen Petrovic was born in Sibenik.

Cathedral of St. James

Croatian Republic Square (Trg Republike Hrvatske). Entrance - 15 kuna (previously free). This is the main attraction of the city; the cathedral is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Construction began in 1431, but ended only in 1536 due to constant Turkish wars. Several architects worked on the cathedral and built it entirely of stone in the 15th - 16th centuries. His style can be attributed to both Gothic and Renaissance styles. The close-fitting stone slabs of the cathedral roof were damaged during the shelling of Šibenik by Serbian armed forces in 1991. The roof has since been restored. There is a beautiful font here that is a must see. It is built only from stone, without any cementitious substances. It is also worth paying attention to two human heads carved from stone 72 on the facade of the building. These are images of unknown people: ordinary passers-by, sailors, merchants and peasants who lived in Sibenik at the time the cathedral was built. The statues of Adam and Eve are also very curious: Adam covers his chest with his hands, and Eve covers her stomach.

Palih omladinaca 2 (near the cathedral), ☎ +385 98 341 175. Entrance - 10 kn. "Bunari", which literally means "wells", is a complex of reservoirs built in the 15th century to supply water to the city. They have now been drained and converted into a museum, gallery and cafe. There are seven sections: treasures of Sibenik, food and drinks, shipwrecks, people from the past, etc. The cafe often hosts concerts, comedy shows, etc. A very interesting place.

Medieval monastery in the gardens of St. Lawrence

Sv. Lovre (exit Don Krste Stošića street, and at the sixth turn go right), ☎ +385 22 212 515‎ ( [email protected]). Every day from 8.00 to 23.00. Entrance - 15 kn, guide services are included in the price. A rare medieval monastery garden, restored in 2007 by Dragutin Kiš, who won the Millennium Flora Award in 2000. He received his first award at a school garden competition in Croatia. A wide variety of plants grow in the monastery garden, especially those used for medicine or as seasonings. There is a quiet cafe here where you can calmly enjoy the view of the old part of Šibenik and the sea, the atmosphere and the smell of the sea.

  • Sibenik Aquarium, Stube Petra Kaera 1b, ☎ +385 22 410 258. 10.00 - 22.00. Entrance - 4 - 5 euros.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

  • The olive oil and dates here are of high quality, so you can also bring them home as a souvenir.
  • There are also antique fairs in the city, pay attention to this. If you come to Šibenik at the end of September, you will go to the medieval festival, where you can buy literally everything related to the Middle Ages.
  • You can go to the Dalmare shopping center. It is located on the southern outskirts of the city on the way to. There are stores of many European chains, a large Konzum supermarket and a 24-hour McDonald's here.

How to get around the city

Everything in the city is within walking distance. From the bus station to the old part of the city it is just a five-minute walk. All the sights can be seen during a walk; the farthest one will only take half an hour to walk.

If you come by car, there is a large parking lot in the central Polyana square. There are also 700 parking spaces near the city's northern border. If you want to go to the outskirts of the city (for example, to the Dalmare shopping center), you can take the bus. Bus service in Šibenik is provided by one public and three private companies.

Transport rental

During non-high tourist season, you can negotiate a lower price by contacting the company in advance. This way you will get more benefits than if you book online. Local companies usually offer cars cheaper than international ones. You can compare prices from different rental companies.

City Sibenik (Sibenik) located in Croatia, on the coast, slightly north of Split. Here the Krka River flows into the Adriatic Sea. The old town of Sibenik is one continuous attraction, when you wander through the streets as if you were walking through a museum...

Sibenik on the map:

We have been to Sibenik twice: and on vacation in 2016. The city was just celebrating its 950th anniversary (the first mention in chronicles happened in 1066). I couldn’t finish this post for a long time because I had to sort through another million photos. By the way, the photos turned out better from the first trip. Either it’s the camera, or the lack of children who are sick of their mother’s “photographer syndrome”...

City wells

City wells have been preserved on the streets (now, of course, they are no longer in use):

Here's another one (sign above the store :)

Streets of Sibenik

It’s great that in European cities you can often find signs or even entire posters telling about the history of a particular place:

In general, the entire center (as in other tourist cities) is simply covered with cafes and shops, through which you often have to literally push your way, and in the evenings there are also crowds of idly wandering city guests :). It’s probably more interesting to walk through such ancient towns in winter... or at least early in the morning.

Although in the evenings Sibenik is very beautiful under the light of the lanterns!

When the heat has already subsided and the stone pavements still retain warmth, you can sit right on the steps and watch cartoons from the animation festival, which takes place in Sibenik every year in the first half of summer.

Or listen to some street concert.

Things to do with kids in Sibenik, about interactive museum “Secrets of Sibenik” and I wrote the terrarium. I will only repeat that there is no abundance of entertainment for children spoiled by various quirks, but you can live :). I really liked the open-air animation festival, more than our children did).

And, of course, it’s not a tourist attraction, but don’t pass it by :). There is only one Italian ice cream shop in the city, where people line up, on Kralja Drzhislava Square 1. Very tasty, with waffle hearts.

On weekend mornings there is a flea market on King Zvonimir Street. I don’t really understand who is interested in such old stuff, but apparently there are fans.

And a little higher, on the road to the fortress of St. Michael, right in the middle of the sidewalk you can see some ruins under glass (probably to appreciate the cultural layer of centuries), something similar was seen in Zadar.

And some more photos of the streets of Sibenik:

Sibenik is one of the most colorful cities in Central Dalmatia. Founded in 1066, it has several very famous historical and cultural monuments - the 31-meter-high Cathedral of St. James, the Fortress of St. Anne, and the “Rector's Palace.” The narrow winding streets of the Old Town, ancient buildings, pavements made of stone polished over centuries have turned this amazing city into an open-air museum.

In general, Šibenik will primarily please those who enjoy “excursion” trips: this is not a resort town. Here you can also hunt small game, go rowing or sail on a yacht; diving enthusiasts will not be disappointed either. Every summer the International Children's Festival is held here and the Organ Summer School is opened.

A little history

The city was founded in 1066 by the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV, and, in addition to being a resort, the city is well known to specialists in European architecture: the Cathedral of this city was built using a method unique for those years, it is assembled from huge stone slabs. The magnificent building combines features characteristic of both the Romanesque style and Gothic motifs. To this day, this cathedral is a unique testimony to the ingenuity of past generations, their creativity and the highest artistic taste. The Cathedral is the semantic center of the city and one of its symbols.

Weather in Sibenik

As a resort, Šibenik is famous for its small pebble, rather wide beaches, mild climate and rich varied vegetation. It is attractive, first of all, for Russian tourists and tourists from European countries. This is understandable: Sibenik has an average of 300 sunny days a year.

The warmest month here is August, and then the water warms up to its highest point - 27 degrees. And the bravest ones open the swimming season in May, when the water temperature reaches 18 degrees. It is interesting to note that even in the coldest months of the year - January and February - the water temperature does not drop below 15 degrees.

All beach hotels are located approximately 6 km from the center of Sibenik. The local beach is sandy.

Spa and treatment

In 2002, in one of the Sibenik hotels Ivan 3* (formerly Millenium Club) a thalassotherapy center was opened, consisting of 6 pools with heated water (from +28 °C to +30 °C). Four pools are with sea water, and two are with fresh water. The center widely uses therapeutic mud.

Hotels and restaurants

There are enough hotels in Sibenik to accommodate everyone on vacation, but it makes sense to book a room, as in any resort in the world, in advance, then the price may be much lower and the variety of offers much wider.

The resort's restaurants and cafes offer first-class cuisine: international, European, Asian and local dishes harmoniously complement each other. Shopping in Sibenik can also be interesting: numerous shops offer not only items from well-known brands, but also products produced in local workshops in small, sometimes just a few pieces, batches.

Entertainment and attractions of Sibenik

St. James Cathedral is a unique white stone cathedral of the 15th century, built from solid stone blocks. Fortress of St. Nicholas, built in the 16th century on a small island to protect the city from the sea. Fortress of St. Anna on the top of the hill above the city. The City Hall building with beautiful arcades, the Franciscan Monastery with the Museum of Medieval Printings, the Church of St. Barbara with a permanent exhibition of medieval ecclesiastical art, the Archbishop's Palace and the Prince's Palace (now the City Museum). Built in the 16th century, the New Church is famous for its unique frescoes, which many tourists from all over the world come to admire.

In the ancient buildings of the city and its straight lines, a specialist will immediately see the influence of Venetian traditions and views on urban planning. Like most cities in Dalmatia, Šibenik looks bright and elegant, the reason for this is the active use of the famous Brac stone for cladding its buildings and streets. This stone is mined in the quarries of the Croatian island of Brac and is famous for its unique shade of white, which seems to be illuminated from within. As you know, the White House in Washington is faced with this stone.

Holidays in Sibenik

Leisure

Resort life in Sibenik is rich and varied. First of all, it is filled with sports and activity. The city's remarkable position - at the same time on the sea, river and lake - allows it to offer a full range of water sports, from diving to rafting. Active beach activities are possible on all beaches in the area: water slides, parasailing, and skiing are available for children and adults. Numerous volleyball courts and well-equipped tennis courts will not leave fans of these sports indifferent. Those interested are also offered such rather exotic entertainment as archery ranges and various aviation programs, which, for example, allow you to view the region from a helicopter.
