The knife and the law: to help tourists. How to carry a knife on a plane? Is it possible to bring a knife on a plane?

Many of us, preparing for a long-awaited vacation and packing our bags, anticipating a pleasant time traveling, without hesitation, put our favorite knives in our luggage. These cutting tools have long become a part of us, and without them many feel at least uncomfortable. As one of the ardent fans of Spiderco products once said: “Without my Spider on my belt, I feel completely naked.” And this is a completely natural and understandable feeling. But when getting ready to travel, especially when traveling abroad, you should know how legal your knife will be in the country where you are going. Otherwise, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise and a ruined vacation. Not to mention the fact that you risk easily losing your spicy pet.

In this article, we will try to highlight the legality of blade products in various countries of the world. We hope you find this information useful!

Russia

Let's start, of course, with Russia, after all, most of our compatriots spend their holidays without leaving the country.

Everything is simple here: what is allowed in your hometown (town, village) is not prohibited anywhere in the Russian Federation. And everything that does not belong to the category of “edged weapons” can be freely transported, carried, and stored. Of course, you should behave wisely: do not appear in public places with a machete at the ready, do not unsheath impressive hunting knives, do not entertain yourself by demonstratively clicking an automatic folder in a cafe. Such demonstrations, at a minimum, attract the attention of law enforcement officials. Transport your knives in bags or backpacks, sheathed, packed (of course, the EDC folder can hang on a belt or pocket, and that's fine) to your vacation spot.

Those who intend to visit should be especially concerned about the legality of transporting knives. Kaliningrad region, due to its geographical location. If you are heading to the Kaliningrad region by sea on a Russian ship, then there is nothing particularly to worry about - carry any legal knives in your luggage. If you are planning a flight, then your knife must be checked in as baggage, and you must have with you a document confirming that the knife is not a bladed weapon. Otherwise, according to the law, the knife can be confiscated and stored in a special storage facility, with subsequent return to the passenger. In practice, the knife may simply be confiscated, and you will never see it again.

You can also theoretically carry a knife certified for this procedure, for example by the Transportation Security Administration, as a folding knife in your carry-on luggage. Why do we write “theoretically”? Because in theory, yes, this knife is allowed to be carried in hand luggage, it has the appropriate certificate. But not all airlines will approve of having this cutting tool on board an airliner. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, you should first contact the airline, outline the essence of your question (the possibility of carrying a knife in hand luggage) and obtain prior permission. And, of course, have a certificate for the knife with you. Difficult, troublesome? Yes, but there is no other way. And remember: the above applies to any flights, in any direction.

And finally, the third way to get to the Kaliningrad region is by land transport. In this case, you will have to cross the territory of Lithuania. To do this, you will need, at a minimum, a transit visa (or “Schengen”), and the knives you carry must comply with Lithuanian law. In Lithuania, folding automatic knives with a blade length of more than 85 mm, a double-edged blade and a blade width of less than 14% of the blade length are prohibited. Also in this country, brass knuckles (including those that are part of a knife) are prohibited. As for other types and sizes of knives, in Lithuania the law is quite loyal to such bladed products - perhaps because in this country it is allowed to store and carry firearms, both smooth-bore and rifled.

CIS countries

Ukraine- the closest neighbor, which until recently had quite loyal laws regarding knives. Previously, GOST standards were in force in this country, according to which knives were divided into “civilian cutting tools” and edged weapons. Carrying, manufacturing, repairing and selling edged weapons was punishable in accordance with Part 2. Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. There is no Law on Weapons in Ukraine, and this further confuses the situation with the legality of knives. At the present time, due to the political situation in Ukraine and strained relations with Russia, transporting any, even the most harmless knives into this country is becoming a very risky and unpredictable business. Just like the trip itself.

Belarus. In Belarus, there is a Weapons Law that regulates their circulation, and GOSTs that classify knives as legal and as edged weapons. Russian and Belarusian GOSTs are very similar in this regard. For example, the same automatic folding knives with a blade up to 90 mm are legal in Belarus.

Moldova. In this country there is no law regulating and limiting the circulation and use of bladed weapons. You can transport any bladed product.

Latvia- the acquisition, storage, sale of any bladed product is permitted. But carrying edged weapons is prohibited, and there are no clear standards and definitions of which knife is “cold” and which is not. There is only a very vague general characteristic - “an object specifically designed to destroy or damage living or inanimate objects using muscular force or mechanical devices.” That is, almost any knife can be classified as a bladed weapon based on the fact of its use as such. Without the use of this kind of knife, the knife will be considered as a household knife.

Estonia According to its Weapons Law, it does not divide non-firearms into bladed weapons and household knives. That is, there is no strict definition. However, there are a number of prohibitions. All automatic knives, bladed products with double-edged sharpening, and knives disguised as other objects are prohibited. There is a restriction on knives with blades longer than 90 mm, but it is very vague and can be interpreted in different ways.

Kazakhstan. In Kazakhstan, there is Government Decree No. 1146 dated November 29, 2007, according to which bladed products are classified as edged weapons or household cutting tools. Briefly: knives with blades up to 90 mm long and a spine thickness up to 2.6 mm are not edged bladed weapons. Daggers that are edged weapons must have blades more than 150 mm long with a butt thickness of 4.0 mm and a blade width of at least 25 mm. Also, this resolution spells out many nuances (presence of a stop or finger grooves, type of installation and its reliability, double-sided sharpening, etc.), according to which a knife can be classified as a bladed weapon or not. We recommend that those traveling to Kazakhstan with their own knives carefully study this resolution.

Far abroad

In many European countries there is such a thing as legal reason, which means that carrying a knife can only be justified by the presence of a reason. This means that you can’t just carry a knife. And you should always be prepared to explain to the police officer why you need the knife. And explain it convincingly. By the way, the explanation “for self-defense” will not be an excuse. Please take this into account. And, of course, you can only carry “civilian” certified knives with you.

Finland- a country that does not have the above requirements! Ride confidently and carry your legal knife with you without fear.

Sweden. In this country it is illegal to carry knives in public places. From the accumulated travel experience of tourists, we can conclude: representatives of the law in Sweden are loyal to small folding knives (EDC) on belts or pockets, so if you have, for example, from Boker in your luggage, you don’t have to worry.

Norway- the homeland of the Vikings, but, alas, not a very loyal country for nyphomaniacs. It is prohibited to own daggers, balisongs, or automatic folding knives here. You should not appear in public places with knives. And to use them for hiking, hunting, fishing and traveling, special permission may be required.

Denmark. It is prohibited to appear in public places or even to have in your own car a folding knife that can be opened with one hand and has a blade lock, regardless of the length and shape of the blade. Fixed vehicles are also banned (public places and cars). Daggers, knives with hidden blades (such as knives in canes), balisongs, and automatic folders are prohibited. Only folding knives with a blade up to 7 cm long that do not have blade locks are considered legal. An example of such a legal knife would be from SOG. For hunting, sports, fishing and other things, you can have folding knives with a blade lock and fixed knives with blades up to 12 cm long, but with special permission from the police. These cutting tools must be transported in packaged form, so that direct access to the knife is excluded. In a car - only in the luggage compartment.

Belgium. Daggers and dagger-type knives, concealed knives (in canes and otherwise disguised), throwing knives, and knives with a Spear-Point blade profile are prohibited in this country. The law does not prohibit the possession of balisongs and automatic folding knives, but the strictness of the Belgian courts does not leave even a shadow of hope for a favorable outcome for the owner of this type of cutting tools, because there were cases when the courts in this country recognized knives from . In Belgium, it is illegal to possess any knife without a valid reason. You should especially avoid appearing with a knife at public events: even a keychain knife without a blade lock can be grounds for arrest and a substantial fine. Transporting knives in Belgium is only permitted in packaged form, without direct access.

Luxembourg. A complete ban on the possession of any bladed weapons, double-edged knives, or throwing knives. Automatic folding knives, balisongs, folders with one-handed opening, folding knives with a blade lock and a blade longer than 7 cm, fixed ones are prohibited. Knives with a blade length of 7 to 9 cm, without a protective stop and with a blade width of at least 14 mm are legal. Hunters can use profile knives, but with special permission. If you are not sure, but still need a knife, put it in your Spyderco luggage.

Austria There are no strict legal restrictions on knives. Only special models, structurally intended exclusively for attack or defense, are illegal. A knife used to commit a crime can also be considered a weapon. In other cases, the law is loyal to knife owners.

Switzerland- a country with a very specific law regarding the legality of knives. In this country, folding knives with an activation mechanism (automatic, semi-automatic, one-handed opening) are prohibited if, when opened, such a knife has a total length of more than 12 cm or is equipped with a blade more than 5 cm in length. Based on the requirements, we select a legal option - for example, from G. Sakai. In addition, the prohibition on possession applies to throwing knives, balisongs and knives classified as Fantasy-Knives. Fixed blades are recognized as weapons and are prohibited if the blade of such a product has a sharp tip and its length is shorter than 30 cm. Exactly shorter! Weapons also include knives with symmetrical blades, double-sided sharpening, with a saw or hooks on the butt.

France- a wonderful country with a strict concept of legal reason. Here the police, depending on the situation, decide whether you legally own (use, transport, carry) a knife or not. In principle, in France any knife can be considered prohibited. However, kitchen knives are completely permitted. And if you take a big one with you on a picnic and use it to cut cheese and ham, there won’t be any problems with the law. You should be especially careful when wearing and using knives in France in big cities. Here, separate edicts prohibit the carrying of automatic knives, folders with one-handed opening, daggers and fixed blades with blades longer than 10 cm. Transportation of knives is allowed in packaged form without the possibility of direct access.

England and Ireland- countries that have adopted the Offensive Weapon Act (a law classifying as prohibited any items that can be used as weapons). This “comb” includes not only all knives, but also a number of tools and sharpened objects, not necessarily even iron ones. These items cannot be carried in public places. If you go hiking, fishing or hunting, then you are allowed to take with you a simple folding knife without locking with blades up to 7.6 cm in length. But in this case you will need permission. Naturally, the requirements for safe transportation (without direct access) must be observed. Spyderco produces a folding knife designed specifically for the British audience. This folder is legal in the UK, but be aware of the Offensive Weapon Act!

Scotland- In general, the law on knives is consistent with the UK. But there is a special Act on carrying knives in public places. According to this Act, it is prohibited in Scotland to possess any knife, with the exception of folding pocket knives with a blade of up to three inches in length, or knives used for work, or knives used in religious ceremonies, or knives that are part of a national costume. A folding knife from Spyderco fits the legal requirements.

Netherlands. In large cities of the “land of tulips”, carrying any knives is prohibited. This primarily applies to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. But in other cities, such a ban applies partially: there are zones (usually the city center and crowded places) where carrying knives is not allowed. Folding knives with one-handed opening, automatic folders, and daggers are prohibited in principle. Outside cities, it is allowed to carry folding knives with blades up to 7 cm long. If there is a base (fishing, hiking, etc.), it is allowed to wear fixed blades with a total length of up to 28 cm. Transportation of knives is allowed in packaged form, without the possibility of direct access. If you're going fishing anywhere near Vlissingen or Breda, pack an Emerson backpack. This multi-tool knife can help in various situations and will be completely legal.

Italy also requires knife owners to follow safe transportation rules. In this European country, the attitude towards knives is somewhat paradoxical: daggers, balisongs, automatic knives, throwing knives and other bladed products can be bought freely here in many places. But at the same time, possession of such products is allowed only with permission. Carrying a knife with you in cities is completely prohibited, and it doesn’t matter what size your knife is - a powerful tactical knife from Extrema Ratio or a miniature gentleman’s knife from Fantoni. Also, outside cities, carrying a knife must have a legal justification.

Greece prohibits appearing with a knife at public events. In addition, there are no restrictions prescribed by law, but the legal reason is valid in this country. That is, any police officer may ask what is shining on your belt and why do you need “this”. In any case, we do not recommend traveling to this country with a balisong, automatic folding knife, throwing knives or daggers.

Spain has certain restrictions and prohibitions on certain types of knives. In this country, automatic knives and balisongs, as well as blade products with an aggressive exterior, are prohibited. That is, it is not recommended to bring tactical fixed-wings or charismatic work folders to Spain. In addition, karambits, butcher knives, knives disguised as other objects, and daggers with blades longer than 7 cm are illegal in Spain. Folding knives are legal if their blade length does not exceed 10 cm. Folding knives with one-handed opening are allowed. Owning fixed ones is not prohibited, but only if there is a reason (for wearing). Transportation - only in packaged form without the possibility of direct access. The final decision on the legality of a knife and its carrying is made by the police.

Czech has no restrictions on blade products. It is allowed to purchase, carry and store any knives, daggers, swords and sabers. Formally, only knives disguised as other objects (a knife in a cane, for example) are prohibited.

Slovakia also has no law restricting the possession of bladed products. The exception is hidden, camouflaged melee weapons.

Slovenia is more strict towards knife owners: knives with double-edged blade sharpening are prohibited here. In addition, knives adapted for attack are prohibited: automatic folders, thrust knives, throwing models, knives disguised as other objects. There must be a reason for carrying a knife. Knives must be transported safely (packed). Naturally, if you have a knife clip (for money) from Al Mar in your jacket pocket, it is unlikely to cause complaints from the police.

Germany has a number of prohibitions and restrictions: firstly, there is a Law on bladed weapons, secondly, knives with brass knuckles, automatic knives with a blade more than 8 cm long and with thin blades (width less than 30% of the length), balisongs, butcher knives are prohibited in principle , knives disguised as other objects. In principle, in Germany you can safely carry a folding knife with a non-aggressive exterior, for example, from Cold Steel. The main thing is to convincingly explain on occasion why you need it.

Poland Loyal to nyfomaniacs. There is no law restricting or regulating the turnover of bladed products. It is allowed to carry, store, and purchase knives and daggers of any type, with the exception of products disguised as other items.

Portugal does not strictly regulate the carrying and handling of knives. Nobody will punish you for a folding knife with a blade up to 9 cm. Naturally, appearing in public places with a large fixed frame is, to put it mildly, not welcome.

The German magazine Messermagazin will help sum up the European review “The Knife and the Law”, according to which stilettos, daggers, balisongs, automatic folding knives, butting knives and camouflaged blade products are prohibited in almost all European countries. The magazine also notes that in all European countries, except Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway, Finland and Sweden, a knife found by the police in a car, in an easily accessible place (glove compartment, door pocket, next to or under the seat, etc.) gives grounds for subject to arrest, followed by severe punishment, including imprisonment.

With the onset of the holiday season, many of our compatriots are planning a vacation in neighboring countries of the Middle East. Therefore, information about the legality of knives in Turkey and Israel may be useful.

Israel- a country of contrasts. Here you can freely meet girls with Galil or M-16 in their hands in public transport and, at the same time, according to paragraph 186 of the Israeli Criminal Law, you can easily get up to 5 years in prison for carrying a knife outside your home or place of residence, if not you can prove that carrying a knife was legally justified. The concept of “knife” includes absolutely anything that can be used to stab, cut or injure in some other way. Folding knives with blades longer than 10 cm are strictly prohibited.

IN Turkey you will be able to use and carry small folding knives with blades up to 9 cm. In the cities (tourist centers) of Turkey, it is common to pass through the frame: in this case, you will be asked to put the knife away and will return it when you return. Transportation - packed, in luggage. Some tourists bring larger knives to Turkey and walk around with them quite freely (carrying them on a belt or in a bag). But police representatives may at any time ask why you need such a knife. The solution to the issue depends on the validity of the explanation and a polite tone. Representatives of the law generally do not pay attention to multitools. There are numerous cases of carrying and using small folding knives for peaceful purposes, like those from Buck Knives, without any complaints from law enforcement officers.

Egypt- a ban on carrying any knives. Knives must not be used when diving. Due to such restrictions, divers periodically get into trouble, but the local law is inexorable. Hunters can take a profile knife with them, but only with special permission and not at all free of charge.

New World

In a separate section we will highlight the situation of knife owners in Canada and some North American states (USA). It is simply unrealistic to talk in detail about the legality of knives in the USA within the framework of this article alone, since individual American states, cities, and even just communities have the right to declare their own laws and rules that apply in strictly defined territories and places. Let us only note that the concealed carrying of knives is prohibited almost throughout the United States.

Canada prohibits the possession of folding knives in which the blade can be opened due to a hidden mechanism (automatic folders) or under the influence of gravity. One-handed folding knives are permitted. Concealed carrying of knives is prohibited.

State of Florida, USA. The law regarding the legality of knives in this state is extremely confusing. In general, in Florida, a weapon is any item the use of which can lead to death. An exception is Common Pocket Knives - pocket folding knives. But there is no clear definition of such a knife, and its legality is determined by the court. Carrying a concealed knife is a criminal offense in Florida.

State of California, USA. Balisongs and automatic knives with a blade length of more than 5 cm are prohibited here. An example of a legal California automatic folder is a knife from Pro-Tech. Concealed carrying of knives and carrying that facilitates access and use of a knife (for example, carrying an open folding knife) is also prohibited. Transportation of knives is allowed only in packaged form, excluding direct access. Open carrying of knives is not prohibited. It is allowed to carry folding knives with one-handed opening.

New York State, USA. In New York State, there are two laws regarding the legality of knives: the state law and the New York City law. New York State prohibits the possession of automatic knives, gravity-opening knives, daggers, stilettos, and knives disguised as other objects. New York City prohibits the possession of locking folding knives with blades longer than 10 cm. Fixed blade knives should only be transported when sheathed, packaged and away from immediate access. It is prohibited to carry knives on a belt or pocket, or in any other way that allows quick removal.

Far, far away Australia is infinitely far from Russia in terms of the law on knives. Australia considers a visit by a non-citizen with a knife in their luggage to be an importation. A number of bladed products (including long blades, daggers, switchblades, tactical knives, balisongs, concealed carry knives, pointing knives and so on) are prohibited from import in principle by the Customs Regulations 1956. If you want to bring a knife with you, you will need permission from the Minister of Justice and Customs, and before this permit, obtain another permit from the State Police Department for the right to own a knife (knives). Importing knives without proper documentation is punishable by a fine of up to $275,000 or a prison term of up to 10 years, or both. So be careful.

In conclusion, one piece of advice: if you are going to visit some countries of the world and are not sure that our knife will be legal in this country, take the time to cover this issue, consult with experts and study local legislation. This way you can avoid troubles on your trip.

To help ensure the safety of travelers, airports and airlines around the world have implemented rules that limit the ability of certain items to be carried in carry-on baggage on board an aircraft. These restrictions were tightened after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, when on September 11, 2001, suicide bombers were used to threaten the lives of passengers on two planes.

Knives that are not edged weapons, but can be classified as dangerous objects

All these items can be carried exclusively in luggage, just do not forget to cover or pack them well first.

What kind of knife can be confiscated from luggage?

A knife whose blade is longer than 10 centimeters must be accompanied by special permitting documentation indicating the purpose of this item. You need to obtain such documentation where you purchased it. If you were given a knife and there is no official accompanying document, then, unfortunately, you will have to refuse the gift. Even if you pack it in a suitcase, airport workers may well remove such a knife from your luggage. What knives can be carried on an airplane?

Penknife

Sometimes you are even allowed to take a pocket knife with you into the cabin, but only on condition that its blade is not longer than 6 cm. However, in this case, when boarding, you will have to answer additional questions, explaining why exactly you need a pocket knife in the cabin airplane. This may result in more scrutiny of your luggage and delays before boarding. If you want to avoid problems, just pack yours in a suitcase and check it in as luggage. There will be no claims from the inspection service against you.

Is it permissible to transport bladed weapons by air?

Of course, this is permitted, provided that it has a completely peaceful purpose. For example, you go hunting or on an expedition, transport antiques or art objects, play a corresponding sport and rush to a competition. In other words, you have serious reasons and official confirmation in the form of relevant documentation.

What items are considered melee weapons?

Not every knife longer than 10 cm will be considered a bladed weapon. There are clear differences between weapons and knives for household and utility purposes. These features are determined by law. There are certain criteria - blade length, thickness, lock or stop, and others. Here is an approximate list of bladed weapons that require special permission to be carried in aircraft baggage:

  • Finnish knife;
  • dagger;
  • officer's dagger;
  • bayonet;
  • sword;
  • saber;
  • sword;
  • scimitar;

There are also other types of bladed weapons similar to the above.

What rules apply when transporting bladed weapons on airplanes?

Which Rules for carrying knives on an airplane? Edged weapons can be dangerous for both passengers and crew members, therefore they are registered separately as special cargo. There is a special legal procedure when preparing documents for edged weapons. According to the rules, such special cargo must be stored separately during the flight. The owner and other passengers should not have free access to weapons on the plane. Crew members are also not allowed to touch it during the flight.

During transportation, edged weapons are usually placed in a special metal container, which must be sealed. For this purpose, a special compartment is provided in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

What actions should the owner of a bladed weapon take in order to transport it safely on an airplane?

There are strict rules that must be followed, and then the airline and airport employees will not have any complaints against the owner of the bladed weapon. These are the rules:

  1. It is necessary to have a special permit for a weapon, which determines its purpose. For example, permission to exhibit or collect, to store, carry, etc.
  2. If the owner of a weapon intends to visit another country, then it is necessary to obtain a special export permit.
  3. Documents indicating that the owner of the weapon plans to take part, for example, in sporting competitions, hunting, an exhibition, artistic performance, etc. will greatly facilitate the procedure for passing inspection at the airport.
  4. When booking a ticket, you must immediately warn the airline staff that you intend to bring bladed weapons on the plane.
  5. As soon as you arrive at the airport, immediately notify the security service and the police that you have a bladed weapon. Accompanied by a law enforcement representative, go to a special room to register and deposit the special cargo for storage.
  6. During the transfer of weapons for storage, you must personally supervise the execution of documents, reconciliation of the data in the weapons permit and the contents of the special cargo.
  7. Be sure to sign the document indicating the acceptance and transfer of the weapon for storage. Usually such an act is drawn up in triplicate. You must keep one of them.
  8. Upon arrival, present the certificate of storage of weapons and your documents to airport employees to receive your special cargo.
  9. If there is a transfer or transfer flight, then know that special cargo cannot be processed immediately to the final destination. As soon as you leave the plane, a weapon will be issued to you at the transfer airport. The procedure for registering and depositing special cargo must be completed before each boarding of the plane.
  10. The weapon must be sheathed.

What kind of knife can be carried into the cabin of an airplane without being noticed during security?

First of all, you need to think about whether you will need a knife in the cabin of the plane, and not create unnecessary problems for yourself.

If you still cannot do without a knife, then you can take with you a plastic one, with which you can cut food, but you will not be able to damage any hard surface or injure a person. A ceramic knife is also suitable, since it cannot be detected during a hand luggage search at the detector. However, during a personal search this item may still be confiscated from you.

A folding knife - a plastic Card Sharp card, as well as a multitool card, are prohibited in the aircraft cabin. However, this small item can be placed in a wallet or purse and kept with you. Sometimes hidden little cutters are built into other items, such as ballpoint pens and lipstick tubes. This may also be a suitable option. Such an item can only be found on you during a personal search.

In general, it’s still not worth the risk; it’s better to be a law-abiding citizen. After all, the flight will last only a few hours.

Standards and regulations for the transportation of hand luggage and baggage, as well as items and various means, were revised by the international transport organization after the events of September 11, 2001. Changes have been made according to which passengers are prohibited from transporting piercing and cutting objects. But what if you need to bring, for example, a Swiss Army knife as a gift? What transportation rules do air carriers have? Let's take a closer look.

Requirements for transporting knives on an airplane

Not all types of bladed weapons are prohibited from being transported on board an aircraft. Restrictions are placed on knives whose blade length exceeds 8 cm and width exceeds 12.5 cm. It is also prohibited to transport edged weapons with a fixed blade and a shaped handle.

But it is worth considering that not all knives with a blade larger than 10 cm are classified as edged weapons. This is specified in regulations and legislation. Edged weapons include:

  • officer's dagger;
  • dagger;
  • Finnish and hunting knives;
  • bayonet, sword, saber;
  • scimitar, broadsword, etc.

So is it possible to carry a knife on a plane? Yes, but there are certain restrictions for this. Firstly, the passenger must have permission to carry and store bladed weapons. It is received from the appropriate authorities. Secondly, you will need a special permit to transport a knife. It is especially important to take this into account when traveling on international flights. Thirdly, if a passenger is going to participate in competitions using bladed weapons, he will also need certain documents.

Next, the passenger must warn the airline that he plans to transport bladed weapons. It is better to do this when booking your ticket. Before checking in for a flight, you must notify the security service about the import or export of bladed weapons. If this is not done, certain problems may arise during inspection. The passenger's knife may be confiscated and removed from the flight.

When preparing documents for the transportation or storage of edged weapons, you must carefully check all the entered data. It is worth considering that knives are transported in special cases. The act of transferring weapons for storage is drawn up in triplicate. One of them remains with the passenger. You will need it upon arrival at your destination. Only on this basis will the tourist be given his bladed weapon.

Important! If a passenger is flying with transfers, it will not be possible to arrange transportation of such special cargo to the final destination of the trip.

As soon as the tourist leaves the aircraft, he needs to pick up the bladed weapon, and only then hand it back. At the same time, all necessary documents are drawn up again, and an audit is carried out.

What kind of knife can be carried in hand luggage?

Several types of knives can be carried in the aircraft cabin. These include keychain knives. They are foldable, do not have a lock, and their blade length does not exceed 6 cm. You are also allowed to take a pocket knife with you. The length of its blade can reach 6 cm, but no more. Otherwise, it will be confiscated during inspection and sent to a storage room until the tourist arrives back.

Advice! You should learn about the rules for transporting such cargo in the cabin of an airliner on the website of the selected air carrier. Or call the hotline.

If you still need a knife while traveling, it is better to take a plastic one. He cannot harm other passengers. But at the same time they can cut something.

What kind of knife can be carried in luggage?

Since there are restrictions on transporting certain types of weapons in hand luggage, many tourists try to carry them in the cargo hold. So is it possible to carry a knife in airplane luggage? Or are certain prohibitions established in this case too?

I would like to immediately note that modern models of folding knives are strictly prohibited for transportation on board an aircraft. These include a knife in the form of a plastic card. It is usually placed in a purse or pocket. But during inspection such an item will be confiscated.

Knife card

Many people try to hide a ceramic knife in their luggage. Detectors don't see it. But during inspection it will also be confiscated. As for a kitchen knife, if its blade does not exceed 6 cm, it may be allowed to be carried in the cabin of an airliner. But as a rule, such an item is transported only in luggage, so as not to harm the safety of other passengers. A hunting knife will also be sent to the cargo hold.

If the knife was purchased in the host country as a gift, transportation will not be limited. Only in this case the passenger needs to provide documents for the purchase. And the knife itself must be packaged appropriately - in a case.

What type of knife requires a special permit?

Any type of bladed weapon can be transported only on the basis of certain documents: permits to carry and store. When examining such an item, the expert commission makes a decision: to allow or not to allow the transportation of a knife. Conclusions are drawn based on the documents provided. The following parameters of edged weapons are also taken into account:

  • blade material;
  • method of fixing the handle;
  • blade length.

Any type of bladed weapon must be properly packaged. You must be notified in advance about its transportation on board the aircraft. It is also recommended to provide the appropriate documents for the knife a few days before the aircraft departs. You can scan them and send them to the inspection service as a warning, or you can bring them in person.

It is worth considering that many countries have imposed a ban on the export of knives that are of historical and artistic value. A special commission checks the value of such weapons.

Carrying a knife on an airplane

Anyone who uses airline services can, if necessary, quite freely carry with them a product such as a knife. The reason for transportation may be the desire to diversify your household utensils or make an unusual gift for a loved one.

Many people think that such an action would be extremely difficult. But as practice shows, if the passenger adheres to all the specified rules for transporting piercing and cutting products, there will simply be no problems.

Requirements for transporting knives on an airplane

Most airlines prohibit their passengers from carrying sharp objects in the form of hand luggage. All these bans were taken to protect airline passengers. The list of prohibited items includes: various types of scissors, injection needles, pen needles, etc.

What kind of knife can you take on a plane?

Based on the requirements set by the administration of almost every airport, the following types of knives are allowed for transportation as hand luggage:

  • that have a folding shape, but do not have a lock, the blade length of which is less than 6 cm;
  • penknives with a blade size of up to 6 cm. To avoid claims during security checks, any knives you have with you should be checked in as luggage.

What knives can be carried in luggage?

Without consideration, the following are immediately sent to the luggage compartment:

  • intended for hunting;
  • any knives for household needs, the blade of which exceeds 6 cm.

If you want to transport a knife, for example, with a blade length greater than 10 cm, you will need to prepare a special certificate about the intended purpose of the knife for household use.

If the administration of such a document is not enough, and the transported knife is compared with a bladed weapon, it has the right to request additional examination. In this case, it will be confiscated and sent for storage. If the knife or blade is a souvenir or part of national clothing, it may be sent for transportation as luggage or given to crew members for storage.

What type of knife requires a special permit?

Any knife that can be classified as a bladed weapon can only be included in luggage if special documentation is provided for it. When evaluating a knife as a bladed weapon, a member of the expert commission will take into account the material of manufacture, strength and length of the blade.

If you need to translate a knife that belongs to a bladed weapon, you need to comply with several basic requirements. Any bladed weapon, including hunting knives, must be in a case. Even if you have all the necessary documentation for edged weapons, you should notify the airline that was chosen for the flight about this several days before departure. It is advisable to arrive several hours earlier than your scheduled flight.

In many countries, there is a ban on the export of knives that are of historical or artistic value. Before departure, you should familiarize yourself with the rules for importing knives into another country. For example, double-edged objects and folding knives that have a locking mechanism cannot be imported into Cyprus.

Secrets during examination

Although there are formalities when transporting knives by a passenger in the cabin, you can always have one with you. Anyone who wants can take it with them. Such a device is not capable of harming others and is perfect for cutting food.

You can always bring it on board; it does not have metal elements and can only be detected during a personal search. Another option that the metal detector will not respond to is the SwissCard, which is popular nowadays. Outwardly, it is quite ordinary, which can be placed in without any problems. But literally in an instant such a card can become a knife, and it can also be quickly folded back.

For lovers of great originality, we can recommend a small knife that is built into a ballpoint pen or lipstick case. No metal detector can detect such a trick. Problems can only arise with a thorough personal search.

If you want to carry a knife with you on a plane, problems can arise only in the most blatant case of violations of the described rules. It is always worth remembering about additional documents when transporting bladed weapons, and never get into a conflict over transporting penknives and kitchen knives in the luggage compartment.

And of course, you should never take a knife with you into the cabin of an airplane, no matter what its design.

As well as internal requirements.

The rules for transporting weapons apply to the following types of potentially dangerous cargo:

  • any civilian weapons (hunting, sports, collectible, training);
  • air guns and pistols;
  • gas revolvers, pistols;
  • stun guns or stun guns of domestic manufacturers;
  • devices for throwing darts, bows, harpoons, crossbows, catapults;
  • underwater guns;
  • ammunition in original packaging in the permitted quantity;
  • antique weapons;
  • layouts depicting all of the above.

ATTENTION! This list may differ for different airlines; it is better to check it immediately before booking or purchasing a ticket.

Firearms permitted for transportation by air, Pistols, shotguns, revolvers, rifles, and pneumatics are considered.

The following list is usually understood as edged weapons:

  • hunting and Finnish knives;
  • daggers;
  • swords, sabers;
  • bayonets;
  • broadswords, scimitars;
  • dirks;
  • axes of any configuration;
  • brass knuckles, stilettos, nunchucks.

From the point of view of the law, not every knife on an airplane is considered a bladed weapon: unlike a household item, this type of weapon must have a set of characteristics - a certain length and thickness of the blade, the presence of a stop, etc. But airlines rightly consider almost any piercing or cutting object dangerous, which means that its transportation must be carried out in accordance with the general rules.

Pneumatic weapons (pneumatics) are considered to be devices with a muzzle energy exceeding 3 J. They are allowed to be transported according to the rules in force for other types of dangerous goods. If your pneumatic gun has a caliber of more than 4.5 mm and a muzzle energy of more than 7.5 J, you will be asked to provide permission to store and carry it. Cartridges for gas pistols and shotguns and compressed air cans are not allowed for transportation by plane (?).

This is not a weapon, but it can be considered one

Some non-weapon items may, in certain circumstances, be used in its capacity. Taking this into account, it is prohibited to transport them in the aircraft cabin. They do not have to be registered as special cargo, but it is necessary, otherwise they will be confiscated during. This category includes the following items:

  • anything resembling pistols or ammunition in appearance: imitation, props, children's toys, jewelry made from bullets, cartridges or similar items, etc.;
  • sharpened, potentially capable of injuring: scissors, knitting needles, skates, razor blades, elements of a manicure set, skewers, syringes, etc.;
  • blunt, capable of causing serious damage upon impact: baseball bats, hockey sticks, fishing rods, skateboards, etc.

Knives are prohibited for transportation in the aircraft cabin. and check in your luggage with chef's utensils, folding and pocket knives, paper cutters and other cutting items for household use.

Familiarize yourself with the list of prohibited items and the rules for their transportation in advance: your child may be upset if his favorite pistol, even a squirt gun, is taken away from him without being packed in his luggage.

What doesn't belong on board?

Some types of dangerous cargo are prohibited for transportation on board an aircraft, both within the country and for import or export from it. They are generally prohibited from being taken on board an aircraft: It will not be possible to register them as special cargo, check them in as luggage, or carry them in hand luggage. Do not take with you on an air trip:

  • explosive and incendiary ammunition;
  • cartridges for gas guns and pistols;
  • aerosol cans;
  • gas capsules for pneumatics;
  • any explosive devices and their imitation, as well as explosives;
  • signaling devices (sound and light);
  • powder;
  • pyrotechnics;
  • beam weapon.

Some items related to special cargo You can only import or export. It also matters whether the flight is domestic or international. Some categories of citizens in rare cases may be armed in the aircraft cabin (for example, law enforcement officers of certain services during the performance of official duties). It is better to clarify the nuances with a specific airline.

What should a passenger do?

On an airplane, unsafe cargo must be kept separate from its owner and other passengers. When checking in for a flight, it is deposited according to a special procedure and transported as checked baggage (special cargo).

Cold steel and firearms and ammunition from the above list will fly in a special compartment of the luggage compartment, isolated from other types, in a sealed metal box.

An airplane passenger must adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Notify the carrier airline of your intention at the stage of booking a ticket.
  2. Check the availability of all special permits related to the item (for storage and carrying, collecting, exhibiting, etc.). If the flight is planned outside the country, you will have to present an export permit. Documents confirming participation in hunting, exhibitions, and sports competitions will facilitate the registration procedure.
  3. Immediately after arriving at the airport, notify the security service (police) and proceed with its representative to a special room for handing over special cargo.
  4. When transferring weapons, monitor the verification of data in permits and passport data, and the recalculation of ammunition.
  5. Sign certificate of acceptance and transfer of special cargo and take one of three copies for yourself.
  6. At the end of the flight, on the basis of the act and identification card, receive your special cargo from the airport staff.

You should not try to carry prohibited items without permission: this makes such attempts pointless; the potentially dangerous cargo will simply be confiscated by airport employees.

When preparing such luggage for transportation by plane, passengers should consider several important points:

  1. Show up at the airport with at least 1.5 hours before check-in begins (some airlines set a two-hour limit). Please note that there may be a queue at the check-in area if other passengers arrive on the same flight with similar items.
  2. Each unit must be unloaded, disassembled and sheathed (packed); the firearm must also be put on safety.
  3. Ammunition in small quantities (per person no more than 5 kg of gross weight) are packaged separately.
  4. Only factory-made cartridges in special packaging, bag, bandolier are allowed for transportation.
  5. Follow the rules for transporting items on board the aircraft, and your flight will take place without unnecessary hassle and anxiety associated with the possible danger of the cargo.
