Jasna - Slovakia's favorite ski resort

Jasna is the most popular ski resort in Slovakia and the main ski resort in the Low Tatras. There are few noisy apres-ski entertainments after skiing in Jasna, and there are no VIP hotels. Why is Jasna so famous in Slovakia and loved in the ski world? The main advantage of Jasna is the versatility of the ski area!

Geography of ski resorts in the Low Tatras

The Low Tatras and their main ski resort Jasna are located in a valley in northern Slovakia near the border with Poland.

The main peak of the Low Tatras is Mount Chopok. On the southern and northern slopes of Chopok there are lift stations and numerous Jasna trails.

The distance of the Low Tatras from Uzhgorod is 260 km. It is only 3-4 hours by bus charter flights, which are organized by tour operators in the winter. Charter flights from Kyiv arrive at the nearest airport in Poprad, 65 km from Jasna.

From the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, to the Low Tatras - 300 km. The closest thermal spa to Jasná, Liptovsky Mikulas, has excellent train connections to Kosice and Bratislava. And Jasna itself lies on the D1 expressway. Thus, it is easy to get to the resort from several directions and by any type of transport.

Features of skiing in the Low Tatras, Slovakia

Jasna is a ski resort that will appeal to everyone who loves skiing: skiers, snowboarders, fans of off-piste freeride skiing and tobogganing. The main difference between Jasna and other Tatra ski resorts is the large number of slopes.

The elevation difference in the Low Tatras ski area is 950 -2024m. Ski area Jasna - 18 trails with a total length of more than 50 km. The slopes are distributed very well: 6 blue slopes for beginners, 7 red slopes and 5 black ones for pros. The ski area is served by 22 lifts!

An interesting highlight of Jasna is the Low Tatras ski-pass. With this pass you can ride on any slopes and use free ski-bus not only in the Low Tatras, but also in the High Tatras - in Tatranska Lomnica, Strebske Pleso or Stary Smokovec. The High Tatras Ski-pass does not have such reverse magical powers. One-day ski-pass for an adult costs from 29€ , a 6-day subscription will cost from 140 €. Children under 6 years old ride free when accompanied by an adult. There are discounts for children 6-12 years old, teenagers (12-18 years old) and seniors over 60.

Jasna, like any ski resort in Slovakia, has rental points (10-12 € per day) and ski schools for adults and children from 3 years old.

Infrastructure of the ski resort Jasna

What should non-skating family members do in Jasna? The infrastructure of the ski resort is designed for a “gurney”.

Although there is a skating rink in Jasna, there are a lot of restaurants and a nightclub, Jasna cannot boast of a large selection of entertainment.

25 km from Jasna is the largest entertainment complex in Slovakia, Tatralandia, with thermal pools, a huge water park, bowling alley, cinema and sports entertainment. You can spend the whole day there (if not a week!), returning to Jasna in the evening to your favorite skaters.

At the entrance to the Low Tatras valley there is the town of Liptovsky Mikulas (30 minutes by regular bus from Jasna) with urban infrastructure, shops, restaurants and festivities.

Not far from Jasna there is a popular thermal resort in Slovakia, Beseneva, with numerous medicinal baths.

The resort town itself hosts many events in winter, starting with a music festival to open the season. Guests can enjoy fun and serious skiing competitions, regular ratrak stage parties, plastic bag racing, X-Drive arena, swimsuit skiing, tastings and gastronomic parties from the resort's restaurants.

Most hotels and apartments in Jasna are located at a distance of 100-400m from the nearest ski lift.

Economical price/quality options:

In our opinion, the best economical accommodation options in the Low Tatras can be considered a hotel Mykulaska Chata 3*(200m from the ski lift, in a tree, there is a bowling alley, a Wellness center and a kolyba), SNP3*(within a radius of 50m there are 2 lift stations, massage room, tennis, billiards, sauna), apartments Penzion Joseph 2* And Vierka 2* When choosing these hotels (and there are many of them in Jasna), we took into account the location, cleanliness of the rooms and the ratio of price to quality of service.

Ski resort Jasna, Slovakia. Through the eyes of a traveler.

Much has been said above about the fact that there is always a lot of snow in Jasna for almost 5 months of the year. But! Objectively. The climate here is peculiar. This is my second trip to this region and the weather was absolutely the same despite the fact that we went in different months. I don’t exclude that this is my personal luck, but still. So - the lower stations are located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters and it is warm there - about +2. At the top station of Mount Khopok (2,024 m) there is always a strong wind (which blows away all the snow), so much so that the gondolas shake beyond childishness and very often the pass is closed. This means that you may be “lucky” to ski only on one of the slopes of the mountain, and, therefore, in the high season, you will have to stand in queues for the lift.
For myself, I concluded that this is more of a weekend resort (fortunately, it is located very close to the highway) and a lot of weather luck. So first things first.

How to get from Kyiv to the Jasna ski resort by car.

We decided to go to Yasna for 2 days - Saturday and Sunday, December 10 and 11, 2016. Departure from Kyiv at 13:00 on December 9. You can drive through Poland (here it’s a little shorter than 1,035 km) and you don’t have to cross the pass from Lviv to Mukachevo. But there is one big BUT - Polish customs. You can stand here for 4 or 6 hours, and this is not an exaggeration. I don’t know what they are doing there, but I have never met slower customs officers anywhere.

So we decided to go to Uzhgorod and cross the border with Slovakia there. We did not make the whole journey (1,100 km) very quickly, mainly because of the ice on the pass; customs took us, at most, 30 minutes and already at 3 o’clock in the morning we were in Demänovska Dolina. Don't forget to buy a Slovak vignette (road toll) at any gas station - the minimum period for which it is offered is 10 days and costs 10 Euros.

Jasna, ski rental, cost of ski passes, prices in restaurants.

There are several rental points. Some are right under the ski lifts, others are a little lower near the parking lot. The cost differs by 30-40%. At the same time, the quality of skis and boards is almost the same. Ask the hotel if they have an agreement with rentals at discounts. In our case, it saved 10%. Ski rental for two days – 19 Euro per person.
Ski passes – prices in the photo. In our case, two days – 62 Euros + 2 Euros deposit for the card. In Jasna there is a so-called GoPass card, which gives you the opportunity to skip the line, discounts on food in restaurants on the mountain, etc. – read on the resort’s website, it may make sense to use it for a long stay.
Prices in all restaurants on the slopes are approximately the same and not cheap. Standard European (as in Austria, Italy or France - not to be confused with Switzerland). Snack for one – 15-20 Euro.

Jasna, Low Tatras, Slovakia. What I liked.

For two days the weather was sunny with small clouds. The views were simply stunning. Just for these views it’s worth going here for a day or two. The passage from one side of the mountain to the other was open, although the wind was strong. The trails are prepared, well-traveled, many of them are already open and there are not many people at all. For the most part, the trails are not long or difficult. For two days – that’s enough!
There are a sufficient number of different pistes of a good level, reasonable prices for accommodation and rental of ski equipment.

That's probably all!

Trip to the Low Tatras – Jasna. What I didn't like.

The snow is mostly artificial - hard and icy in the morning, wet and a mess by lunchtime. On Khopka, the wind blew away all the snow and the downhill routes are closed, you can ride - but there are a lot of stones. If I hadn’t gone on rental skis, I would have regretted my own. After lunch on Sunday, dense fog settled, the temperature dropped and snow began to fall in the evening. I am sure that since Monday, those who stayed had everything much more fun.

A car trip to the Low Tatras - Jasna ski resort for two days, travel budget.

  • Green card: minimum two weeks – 670 UAH or 24 Euro
  • Gasoline, diesel, gas - who has what - do the math yourself - 2,200 km in both directions. At the same time, it is quite possible to refuel only in Ukraine.
  • Vignette: road toll in Slovakia (I recommend buying it in every country. It’s not expensive, but the fine for not having it, oh how it bites) – 10 Euro.
  • Accommodation: two nights - 58 Euro
  • Ski equipment rental: two days for one - 19 Euro
  • Ski pass: two full days for one adult - 62 Euro
  • Food: here you can eat in restaurants (on average, about 15-20 Euros per person) or buy food in supermarkets - it will be cheaper.

Ski resort Jasna – is it worth going?

In general, I am once again convinced that you need to go skiing in the mountains for a period of 2-3 days in the Alps - in Austria, Italy, France, Switzerland. Yes, a little further, and a little more expensive, but not radically, but always guaranteed 100% pleasure without surprises. As for Jasna, it’s an excellent weekend resort with good views.
