The word "Copacabana" has two versions of origin:

Subsequently, another settlement was formed on the coast - a fishing village. Geographically, it was located at the junction of the Atlantic embankment with the fort. Later, the village grew into a small town, but the name of these settlements remained the same - Copacabana. It did not change even after the city merged in 1892.

From the history of the beach itself

The history of the beach line begins in the 18th century. At that time, here, next to the fishermen’s village, there was a very tiny village, rather not even a settlement, but several sheds used by the fishermen. This point was called Sakupenapana.
