The La Grande Hydroelectric Project (known in Canada as the James Bay Project) represents the most ambitious project in Canadian energy history. The La Grande River is located in the north of the Canadian province of Quebec, it is the second largest river in the province, and is typically lowland. The possibility of its hydropower use has been considered since the 1950s; the fundamental decision to implement the project was made in 1971, at which time preparatory work began. The construction of the hydroelectric power station itself began in 1974.

The concept of the complex provides for the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations on the La Grande River, as well as the transfer of part of the flow of three more rivers - Rupert, Eastmain and Caniapisco - to this river. As a result, the average river flow doubles - from 1690 to 3400 m3/s (for comparison, the Angara - 4500 m3/s), which significantly increases electricity generation. Several more hydroelectric power stations are being built along the transfer route. Electricity transmission is carried out via a direct current power line system.

The following stations are located on the La Grande River proper, from bottom to top:
La Grande-1. Construction began in 1989, in operation since 1995. Power - 1436 MW, average annual output - 7.5 billion kWh.
The design is a typical run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station with a relatively low head (27.5 m), in the turbine room there are 12 propeller hydraulic units. The reservoir is relatively small, with an area of ​​70 km2.

Robert-Bourassa And La Grande-2-A. Formally, these are two different hydroelectric power stations, but in fact they use the same retaining hydraulic structures and identical equipment, so in fact they are a single complex. Both stations have underground machine rooms, and approximately the same pressures - 137 and 138.5 m, respectively. Total output - 37.4 billion kWh.

The power of the Robert-Bourassa hydroelectric power station is 5616 MW, 16 radial-axial hydraulic units of 351 MW each. This is the largest hydroelectric power station in Canada. Initially called La Grande-2, later renamed in honor of the Prime Minister of Canada, who decided to implement the project. Built in 1974-1981.
The power of HPP La Grande-2-A is 2106 MW, 6 radial-axial hydraulic units of 351 MW each. Launched in 1992.

The pressure on the hydraulic units is created using a 162 m high rockfill dam blocking the river. In addition to it, the reservoir is formed by another 29 dams. The reservoir itself has a very decent size - an area of ​​2835 km2 (for comparison, the Boguchanskoye Reservoir is 2326 km2). It is interesting that the Canadians did not carry out forest clearance in this or other large reservoirs, due to the economic ineffectiveness of this activity.

The most remarkable structure of the complex is, of course, the coastal spillway carved into the rocks with a capacity of 17,600 m3/s. Canadians very boldly refused to cover it with concrete.

La Grande-3. A very respectable station with a capacity of 2417 MW, 12 radial-axial hydraulic units, a hydroelectric power station building near the dam. A head of 79 m is created by a rockfill dam. The hydraulic units were launched in 1982-84. A large-scale reservoir with an area of ​​2420 km2.

La Grande-4. It is similar to the previous station both structurally and in parameters. Power 2779 MW, 9 radial-axial turbines, head 117 m, rockfill dam. Semi-underground hydroelectric power station building, carved into the rock. The reservoir is smaller, but also respectable - 765 km2.

Now about hydroelectric power plants on runoff transfer routes.
On the route for transferring runoff from the Caniapisko River (and in total 45% of the flow is transferred) 3 hydroelectric power stations were built: Brisay, Laforge-1, Laforge-2.
The basic element of the system is the Canapisco reservoir, formed by two dams and 43 (!) dams.

The reservoir is the largest in the La Grande complex, its area is 4318 km2, its total volume is 58.3 km3. Plays an important regulatory role, providing a significant part of the winter production of the entire complex. The reservoir was formed on the site of an existing lake with an area of ​​470 km2. The shores are very winding, there are many (more than 300) islands. Built in 1974-85.

There is a hydroelectric power station on the reservoir Brisay with a capacity of 469 MW, with two hydraulic units at a head of 37.5 m. Launched in 1993.

From the reservoir, water flows into the LaForge River, a tributary of La Grande. Two hydroelectric power stations were built on it.
The first one is Laforge-1. Power - 878 MW, 6 radial-axial hydraulic units, head - 57 m. Commissioned in 1993-94. Reservoir with an area of ​​1288 km2.

Second - Laforge-2. Power - 319 MW, 2 hydraulic units operating at a head of 27 m. Quite a typical run-of-the-river station with a relatively small reservoir with an area of ​​260 km2. Launched in 1996.

Now let's move on to the transfer of flow from the Eastmain River. Since the late 1980s, La Grande has transferred most of the river's flow through the 950 km2 Opinaca reservoir. Moreover, at first there were no hydroelectric power stations along the route. Later, in 2006, another reservoir was built - Eastmain, with an area of ​​600 km2, and a hydroelectric power station attached to it Eastmain-1 with a capacity of 507 MW (3 hydraulic units, head 63 m).

And finally, about the transfer of the Rupert River flow. We are talking about this, so only brief information. 50% of the river flow is transferred, work began in 2006 and should be completed in 2012. Two hydroelectric power stations are being built on the runoff transfer route: Eastmain-1-A with a capacity of 768 MW and Sarcelle with a capacity of 150 MW.

Further development of the hydropower complex is also possible - to the north there is the Great Whale River, which is very attractive in terms of hydropower, and three more hydroelectric power stations are tentatively planned there. This project has now been postponed, but if necessary, it may well be returned to.

Beach - pool: The hotel, as you already understood, was 100% booked, so the sun loungers on the pool were occupied by cunning people from 7 in the morning, on the beach around 10 in the morning there were no more places - you had to lie stupidly on the sand! This has never happened before in my experience of staying in a hotel in Turkey. The beach is not small, but there really weren’t enough sun loungers, about 200 people were just lying on the sand in the sun.. A bar on the beach from 10 in the morning, food from 12 in the afternoon, they make gozleme there too. Walking distance to the beach is 5 minutes at most, the shuttle runs periodically.

The same thing every day, in the evening on the grill only chicken one day, cutlets one day, burnt dry fish one day. The food is mostly peppery! how can you sprinkle pepper on a regular baked potato - why??? Children and people with stomach problems are not lucky with food there. I’ve been to Turkey so many times (about 10), but this was my first time when I started eating pasta - it’s terrible...! There was never any seafood during our stay. There is no ICE CREAM, NO fresh juice for breakfast. We never got into the ala carte, we came to the reception reception several times - there was no room, and this happened every time. Although we were promised free access to all 3 due to the placement being unsuccessful.
Alcohol: Bars from 10.00-24.00 local shmurdyak naturally. We knew this very well and brought all our strong stuff; during the day we took beer from the bar and locally produced Baileys. There was even champagne - complete darkness. We often heard that vacationers had run out of tequila - ultra is not ultra. For those who did not have time to find the necessary condition before 24.00, they could go down to the restaurant and refuel themselves at the bar there - few people know about this at the hotel.
Cleaning: Finally, this is tin, not cleaning! Here I put 1! I can make the bed myself. This was the end of the cleaning. No one even vacuumed, there were hair ties left from old guests, hair all over the room. Since they took away the bath towels and didn’t put in fresh ones, we called the reception for an hour, begging and waiting for something that a priori should be done first.
How to entertain yourself when you get to this hotel: outside the hotel there are a lot of shops, for shopping lovers there will be something to do, but there are no super-duper clothes there, junk is not for everyone. Basically everything is for men, girls who are fashionistas have nothing to do there.
A 10-minute drive from the hostel is the old town of Side - ruins, an amphitheater, small old streets, very beautiful historical places that I recommend visiting. The fare is $1. There’s also the town of Manavgat nearby - local Turks live there, and again, for variety, you can climb and do some shopping there.
