How much do Olympic champions receive for a gold medal? How much will their country's athletes be paid? Amount of prize money for Olympic medals. How to live on a well-deserved rest

The winners of the 2018 Olympics and 2018 Paralympics will receive 4 million rubles from the government. A reward of 2.5 million rubles is provided for a silver medal, and 1.7 million rubles for a bronze medal, according to the certificate accompanying the document.

At the same time, the document states that these amounts are equal to the rewards that received, for example, the prize-winners and winners of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in London.

However, they are equal only in ruble equivalent. And the athletes themselves, as you know, are accustomed to counting in dollars and euros, since they earn money at international competitions in hard currency. If we take into account that the dollar exchange rate at the end of 2012 was 31 rubles and 8 kopecks, and the euro was worth 39.95, then the price of Olympic victories is devalued by almost half even at the current exchange rate (57.6 and 68.7). No one knows how much the dollar will be worth at the time of payment of prize money in March-April 2018. Many economists predict a sharp fall in the ruble after the presidential election. That is why the government should motivate Olympians by awarding prize money in dollars. In addition, the government, focusing on 2012 interest rates, actually rejected or did not notice ruble inflation, which amounted to about 40 percent over five years.

The Olympic Games will be held in Pyeongchang from February 9 to 25, 2018, and the Paralympic Games from March 9 to 18, 2018. 102 sets of medals will be awarded at the Olympics, and 80 sets of medals at the Paralympics.

Let us recall that at the end of the Rio Olympics, the record holder for the amount of prize money was Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling, who received a million dollars from the authorities of his country. Ironically, he managed to overtake 22-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, who received no more than 25 thousand dollars from the American government for each gold medal.

Among the most generous towards athletes are Azerbaijan ($510 thousand per victory), Thailand ($310 thousand - but with payments spread over 20 years), the Philippines (237 thousand), and Uzbekistan (200 thousand).

The amount of prize money in Russia is commensurate with the prizes of European athletes (about 50 thousand euros) and much higher than in Ukraine (about 12 thousand dollars).

In addition, payments from the federal government in Russia are far from the only ones for Olympic medalists. Local authorities often donate apartments and cars to Olympians, and also involve wealthy sponsors. As a serious “bonus” for athletes, their inclusion in the lists of deputies at various levels can be considered, which guarantees a comfortable existence after the end of their sports career.

Let's summarize.

The Winter Olympics in Korea are finally behind us. Scandalous. Strangers. There is only good things ahead.

Medalists receive well-deserved prizes and an honest name, and Teleprogramma magazine calculated who earned and how much as a result of their successful performance at the 2018 Olympics.

From the country - millions

Participant in the Olympics is a status. An Olympic winner or medalist is a profession for almost a lifetime. Whatever the fate of Olympic athletes, whether they coach, go into business, politics, or aim for the next Olympics, the very fact of participation in the Games provides the athlete with a certain sports capital. Which, of course, is supported by the material component.

Each country has different gingerbreads. Our government obliged the Ministry of Sports to pay OAR (“Olympic athletes from Russia” - these three shameful letters were used to call our athletes after the formal disqualification of the national team) special bonuses - 4 million rubles for “gold”, 2.5 million each for “silver” and 1.7 million for bronze. What’s especially nice is that the bonuses are summed up if the athlete wins several medals.

According to the order of the government of the Russian Federation dated January 30, 2016, Russian athletes will receive the following monetary bonuses from the state for their achievements at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: for gold - 4 million, for silver - 2.5 million, for bronze - 1 .7 million rubles.

When compared with prizes for achievements at the Winter Games in Sochi, these amounts were fully consistent with those that will be given out for success at the Olympics in Rio.

How much do other states pay?

As for the bonuses that other countries will pay their athletes, in the USA the reward for a gold medal is 25 thousand dollars. In China, they will pay about 50 thousand dollars for gold. In Germany, the winner of the Olympics will be paid about 19.5 thousand dollars. But in Great Britain there is no official prize for winning the Olympics (but advertising contracts in Albion will ensure a comfortable existence for the champion for the rest of his life - Author's note), as well as in Norway, Sweden, Croatia and New Zealand.

But Azerbaijan will pay the gold medalist of the last Olympic Games - 510 thousand dollars. A silver medal will enrich its owner by 255 thousand dollars, and a bronze medal by 130 thousand. In Thailand, the winner of the Games will receive 314 thousand dollars, and in the Philippines - about 237 thousand dollars. In Kazakhstan, the winner of the Olympic Games will receive 200 thousand dollars from the state. In addition, distinguished Kazakh athletes will receive keys to three-room apartments. 200 thousand dollars will be paid to the gold medalist in Kyrgyzstan.

Italy and Uzbekistan will not spare money for their winners, promising the champions 180 and 150 thousand dollars, respectively. But in Ukraine, the Olympic champions will receive 125 thousand dollars. In addition, Ukrainian winners and runners-up will receive apartments and cars. The prize money in Belarus for a gold medal will be 150 thousand dollars, 75 thousand for silver and 50 thousand for bronze.

It is worth noting that in Thailand and the Philippines the winner does not receive the entire amount. It is paid to him for 20 years in equal monthly installments. That works out to about $1,300 per month in Thailand and about $987 per month in the Philippines.

Awards from regions and sponsors

Government rewards are not the only source of prize money for Olympic medalists. Thus, in Russia, regions of the country also establish their own awards. For example, the authorities of the Omsk region will pay an additional 3 million rubles to gymnast Vera Biryukova for gold in the team all-around in rhythmic gymnastics, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. For silver, athletes from Omsk will be awarded 1.5 million rubles, and for bronze - one million rubles. In addition, all Games participants from this region will receive an additional 100 thousand rubles.

Russian cyclist Olga Zabelinskaya will receive a bonus of 1.5 million rubles from the authorities of the Leningrad region for winning silver. The mayor of Magas (Ingushetia) and the head of the republic Yunus-bek Evkurov will give the Olympic champion in judo in the weight category up to 81 kg Khasan Khalmurzaev an apartment.

In turn, the head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov will present the Akhal-Teke horse to the Dagestan wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulayev for Olympic gold.

And here’s what the Prime Minister of Dagestan Abdusamad Gamidov said about cash prizes and awards to Sadulayev: “There is an Olympic program in Dagestan, which clearly states that the winner of the Olympics and his personal trainer receive 100 thousand dollars from the republic - this is the minimum. Separately, he will be encouraged by the Wrestling Federation of the republic. In addition, he is eagerly awaited with gifts in his native Charodinsky district. Also, some fellow countrymen and a number of sponsors will definitely give him big gifts on their own - this is always customary with us. Sadulayev deserved it. Moreover, he is not just a worthy, courageous athlete, but also a very modest, decent, well-mannered person.”

Speaking of gifts, it is worth noting that at one time the Dagestani businessman, head of the Summa company, Ziyavudin Magomedov, gave Sadulayev a latest model Mercedes-Benz Gelendvagen for winning the European Games in Baku. In addition, Sadulayev's fellow countrymen, brothers Magomed and Akhmed Gadzhiev, presented him with a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 jeep.

After another victory in the USA, the famous Dagestan UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov received a gift in the form of a Mercedes-McLaren car from the co-owner of the Russian company Fight Nights Ziyavudin Magomedov.

For victory at the European Championship, Olympic champion Sagid Murtazaliev, at the expense of the Fund for Support of the Dagestan Freestyle Wrestling Team, awarded the Dagestan freestyle wrestler Abdusalam Gadisov with a foreign car “Toyota Lend Cruiser 200”.

But judoist Beslan Mudranov, who brought Russia the very first gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, will receive a bonus of 2 million rubles from the Krasnodar Territory. Residents of this region will be awarded 1.5 million rubles for second place, and one million rubles for third place.

In addition, Olympic medalists can count on prize money from both personal and team sponsors. At the same time, Olympic winners also usually receive additional fees from the Russian Olympians Support Fund, which is sponsored by famous billionaires. As a rule, the organization gives the winners cars, apartments and other valuable gifts.

Lifetime Scholarship

I would like to note that, in addition to bonuses, all Russian athletes who won gold at the Olympics will receive a lifetime monthly stipend, the amount of which is 32 thousand rubles. It is planned that similar payments will be introduced in relation to silver and bronze medalists of the Olympic Games.

All athletes who win Olympic medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro will not remain in their homeland without various incentives, including financial ones. Only the size of bonus payments varies greatly in different countries. Prize money for the winners of the Olympic Games is not at all an innovation; even in Ancient Greece, the winners of the Olympics enjoyed certain privileges in society: the champions were paid 500 drachmas, they had a full-length marble monument carved out for them, and for the rest of their days they were fed for free in public canteens and allowed to sit in the front rows theaters, for example in Olympic Athens. The ban on monetary rewards for Olympic medals was lifted by the International Olympic Committee in the early 1980s. And from then on, the real race for financial rewards began.

Their size in many countries is constantly increasing, however, at the same time, many economically developed countries of the world, like Great Britain or Norway, do not pay their athletes anything.

How much do they pay for Olympic medals in different countries of the world?

In the USA, since 1984, they have not changed the amount of bonuses for Olympic medals for their athletes, and pay gold medalists only $25 thousand. Therefore, for example, if athletes from the US Olympic swimming team want to make money at the 2016 Games, they will have to win several medals at once , as Michael Phelps successfully does.

Poland

$38 thousand for gold, $25 thousand for silver, $16 thousand for bronze.

Poland's Olympic champions can still count on sponsorship gifts in the form of budget cars, for example the KIA brand. It is worth noting here that in many cases, preparations for the Games are carried out by athletes practically at their own expense.

Belarus

The prize money in Belarus for a gold medal will be 150 thousand dollars, 75 thousand for silver and 50 thousand for bronze. A huge bonus for Olympians is that the costs of preparing for the Games are fully covered by the state, and if they win Olympic medals, athletes can additionally count on an Olympic scholarship, paid over 4 years.

At the London 2012 Games, the Belarusian team won 12 medals, two of them gold.

Russia

In January 2015, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree setting the amount of prize money that Russian athletes will receive for their achievements at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Gold medalists will receive 4 million rubles (~60 thousand dollars), silver medalists - 2.5 million rubles (about $37 thousand), bronze medalists - 1.7 million rubles ($25 thousand).

Let me remind you that at the previous Olympic Games, which were held in London in 2012, the Russian team won 82 awards (24 gold, 25 silver, 33 bronze).

Ukraine

Prize fees for medals at the 2016 Olympics for Ukrainian athletes will be as follows: the winner of the “gold” will receive 125 thousand dollars from the state, $80 thousand for the silver medal and $55 thousand for the bronze award. By the way, despite the very good financial incentives for Olympic medals, most of the athletes from Ukraine compete for other countries after going through the naturalization procedure.

China

Chinese athletes will receive from their Olympic Committee $50,000 for a gold medal, $25,000 for a silver medal, and $15,000 for a bronze medal. By the way, at past Olympics, China did not pay bonuses to athletes for silver and bronze awards, but they were guaranteed lifelong employment in Chinese sports departments or local provinces.

Thailand

The Thai Olympic champion is entitled to $314,000, but it will be paid in monthly installments over 20 years.

Germany and Austria

Such economically developed European countries as Germany and Austria value the gold medals of their Olympic champions at only 20 thousand in dollar equivalent.

UK, Norway, Sweden, Croatia

These countries do not pay their Olympic champions and medalists anything at all. The explanation is simple: the country’s budget goes to the development of children’s and youth sports, as well as to the popularization of a healthy lifestyle among citizens. Well, Olympians are people like everyone else.

Well, do you know how much the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic medals themselves cost?

Gold Medal – $600 (it consists of 1% gold, 92.5% silver and 6.16% copper)

Silver medal – $325 (mostly silver)

Bronze Medal – $3 (97% copper and 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin)

The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be held from August 5 to 21, 2016, the Paralympic Games will be held from September 7 to 18, 2016, and in the meantime, governments of different countries are calculating prize money for their athletes.
