Hand luggage

Hand luggage is a bag, backpack, package or other item that a passenger takes with him.

Utair has two carry-on baggage allowances:

  1. Standard hand luggage measures 40x30x20 cm and weighs 5 kg. Passengers with tickets of any fare can take it with them.
  2. Large hand luggage 55x40x25 cm and weighing 10 kg. In addition to standard hand luggage, passengers with Premium and Business fares can take it on board.

In addition to hand luggage, a passenger can carry a backpack measuring 40x30x20 cm and weighing no more than 5 kg, or a handbag or briefcase, as well as:

  • Bouquet of flowers.
  • Umbrella cane.
  • Outerwear.
  • Baby food for the child during the flight.
  • Suit in a suitcase.
  • A cradle, restraint devices for children under two years of age, a baby stroller and other devices) when transporting a child, which can be placed in the aircraft cabin on a shelf above the passenger seat or under the seat, with dimensions not exceeding 65x40x20 cm. Children's devices are allowed for transportation only with a child.
  • Medicines, special dietary needs in the amount required for the duration of the flight. Medicines in excess of those required during the flight must be checked in luggage.
  • Crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, folding wheelchairs, which can be placed on a shelf above the passenger seat or under the seat.
  • Items from duty free shops at the airport, packed in one sealed plastic bag, weighing no more than 3 kg.

Passengers with the Minimum and Optimum fares can carry musical instruments measuring 40x30x20. To carry a larger instrument, you can purchase an additional piece of hand luggage up to 55x40x25 in size. Passengers with other fares may carry musical instruments in hand luggage only if they fit within the dimensions of 55x40x25 cm.

When boarding, Utair employees can check the size and weight of hand luggage. Dimensions and weight are checked using a measuring frame - hand luggage should fit into it without effort.

If, when landing at the departure airport, it turns out that your hand luggage is larger than the permitted limit, but does not exceed 10 kg and dimensions 55x40x25 cm, you can pay 4,000 ₽ (65 € for foreign flights) and take it with you to the cabin.

Or check it in as baggage and pay 3000 ₽ (50 € for foreign flights). Baggage checked in upon boarding is issued at the airport of arrival in the baggage claim area (with the exception of prams and wheelchairs).

The airline may refuse to transport a passenger's excess luggage if there is not enough time to process payment before boarding. As a rule, the payment procedure takes up to 5 minutes.

Baggage

Baggage is placed in the luggage compartment of the aircraft. Passengers with Optimum and Premium fares are entitled to 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 20 kg and up to 203 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions. Business passengers can check in 2 pieces of luggage weighing up to 30 kg with the same dimensions.

Luggage for children. Regardless of the class of service, passengers under 2 years old with a ticket without a seat can take on board 1 piece of hand luggage measuring 40x30x20 cm and weighing up to 5 kg, as well as baby food, a cradle and a stroller (according to FAP standards).

Flying with different airlines

If you are flying with Utair and another airline with a transfer, then baggage and hand luggage allowances may vary.

Read about the other airline's regulations on their website and make sure that your luggage and carry-on baggage comply with them.

Excess and oversized baggage

For an additional fee, you can purchase the opportunity to carry hand luggage or baggage in excess of the allowance included in the fare. The cost varies depending on the moment of payment - before check-in, during check-in or upon boarding. It is more profitable to pay for excess baggage allowance in advance, on the website or in the Utair mobile application.

If there are several destinations on the ticket, additional baggage is paid separately for each.

Additional hand luggage. You can take on board additional hand luggage measuring 55x40x25 cm and weighing up to 10 kg.

From February 1, 2019, when registering for routes on the territory of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra, a paid piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg with dimensions of 55×40×25 cm for the “Optimum” or “Minimum” tariffs is paid for each kg of actual weight according to the tariffs for excess baggage .

Excess baggage. To check in more luggage, you will need to pay extra.

For transfer flights the cost doubles.

Oversizing. If luggage is more than 203 cm in the sum of three dimensions, you will need to pay extra.

For transfer flights the cost doubles.

Excess weight. If your luggage turns out to be heavier than the permissible limits, you will have to pay extra.

For transfer flights the cost doubles.

On intra-district routes through the territory of KHMAO-YUGRA, excess baggage is paid at a rate of 2% of the passenger fare per 1 kg.

Sport equipment

Passengers with Premium and Business fares can carry one set of sports equipment with a total weight of no more than 20 kg in their luggage free of charge.

Passengers with the “Minimum” and “Optimum” tariffs for the transportation of sports equipment need to pay an additional 3000 ₽ (or 50 € on international flights) for 1 set, with a total weight of no more than 20 kg, for each section of the route. A set of sports equipment, regardless of size, when flying at Minimum and Optimum fares, is always checked in as a special category of baggage and is payable upon check-in at the airport.

Utair transports sports equipment with a surcharge on flights to Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, Fergana and Dushanbe and back, regardless of the fare.

  • 1 case with 1 pair of skis and 1 pair of poles.
  • 1 case with 1 snowboard.
  • 1 piece of luggage with 1 pair of boots and 1 helmet.
  • 1 piece of luggage with equipment.
  • 1 piece of luggage with two hockey sticks.
  • 1 piece of luggage Nordic walking poles (1 pair).
  • 1 bicycle (or balance bike) in a case or box.
  • 1 scooter in a case or box.

An electric scooter or bicycle with a detachable battery with a capacity of up to 160 Wh (the battery is carried in hand luggage). A scooter or bicycle with a non-removable battery is transported with registration at the airport cargo terminal. A scooter or bicycle with a built-in (non-removable) lithium battery can be transported when it is registered as “dangerous goods” through the airport cargo terminal if it is technically possible to process, clear and transport it.

Accepted for transportation folded if there is packaging that prevents damage (cardboard box).

  • Surfing equipment - surfboard, binding, wetsuit, pair of boots, other accessories (two pieces with a total weight of up to 20 kg).
  • Diving equipment - buoyancy compensator, wetsuit, helmet, gloves (1 pair), boots (1 pair), fins 1 (pair), pressure gauge, regulator (octopus), mask with snorkel, 1 breathing cylinder, instruments and other additional accessories (two pieces with a total weight of up to 20 kg).

The cylinder must be empty and the valve must be open or removed so that it can be checked during baggage check-in at the airport.

The transportation of regeneration devices, cylinders with compressed gases and chemicals, and other devices/accessories that are classified as dangerous goods is excluded.

  • 1 case (container) with fishing equipment - 2 fishing rods and 1 set of tackle.

At the same time, this free carriage in excess of the established norm does not apply to accompanying equipment (sticks, boots, helmet, bindings, wetsuit, hockey equipment) transported without skis/snowboards/surfboards/sticks.

Additional baggage for Utair Status program participants

Cardholders of elite levels of the Utair Status loyalty program have privileges in baggage transportation.

Global statistics clearly say - . But this was achieved on a global scale only thanks to strict standards and transportation rules. One of these norms is permissible weight of baggage on an airplane for one passenger.

Despite the fact that many consider this norm to be a whim of the airlines, it is based on serious calculations. Any aircraft certified for flights has such characteristics as maximum take-off weight and permissible payload weight. Exceeding the weight of the aircraft according to these indicators directly affects.

In addition, it is not difficult to guess that each “extra” place requires additional effort to process baggage, register it, control it, and deliver it. Therefore, budget airlines, which make money by cutting costs as much as possible, are trying to limit passengers in this matter even in 2018.

Global standards and rules

What is the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane in 2019? To begin with, let us explain that all baggage accompanying passengers during the flight can be divided into 3 categories:

  • Personal items
  • Hand luggage
  • Baggage

Free of charge, according to the law of the Russian Federation and international rules, the airline is obliged to transport 1 piece of baggage weighing no more than 10 kg and personal belongings (reading book, umbrella, laptop, etc.). Companies transport everything else at their own discretion, guided by their own rules.

At the same time, as in any other issues related to air transportation, you can focus on a simple truth - the more expensive the ticket, the greater the permissible weight of baggage on the plane, which a passenger can carry for free.

Most modern airlines, including the leaders of the domestic air transportation market, evaluate all their passenger’s baggage according to three criteria:

  • number of seats;
  • weight of one place;
  • dimensions of one place.

When purchasing a ticket, you need to pay attention to the tariff plan - it is according to which each airline determines how many seats and how much weight a passenger can carry. In addition, loyalty program participants are given additional privileges.

Important! When calculating the weight of luggage on the plane before the flight, keep in mind that for a child under 2 years old, even without their own seat, you can take 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 10 kg for free.

What luggage can you take on board an airplane in 2018?

Bags and suitcases that a traveler takes with him inside an airplane are called hand luggage.

You can bring 1 piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 10 kilograms on board the aircraft free of charge. This norm is guaranteed by law.
But there is a small nuance here - most airlines have restrictions on the size of hand luggage. The most commonly used are: dimensions no more than 55x40x20 cm or no more than 115 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions.

In turn, airlines reward travelers who buy expensive tickets to high-flight airlines by increasing their rates.
For example, in 2018, airline business class passengers can take 2 pieces of hand luggage into the cabin with a total weight of no more than 15 kg.
When discussing the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane, we must not forget about personal items that are not considered carry-on luggage by law.

In excess of the established free baggage allowance and without additional payment, the passenger has the right to transport individual items, the list of which is precisely defined in paragraph 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Read more about this.

What kind of luggage can be transported as cargo?

Larger bags are accepted into the cargo compartment of the aircraft than into the cabin. However, here too there are a number of restrictions for passengers that apply in 2018.

There is no legal requirement for free checked baggage for passengers. This has made it possible for many airlines to introduce so-called “baggage-free” fares, significantly reducing the cost of flights for business people and light travelers. These, for example, include “Light” tariffs from Utair or “Economy-Promo” tariffs from Ural Airlines.

For standard Economy class fares, which most carriers have, the free allowance is 1 piece weighing no more than 23 kg. But there are exceptions here too - so before flying you should always look at the information on the website of a specific company.

Important! Russian airlines do not take on board luggage weighing more than 50 kg. In most European countries, the maximum permissible weight is no more than 32 kg. There, even a porter at the airport will refuse to bear such a “heaviness,” citing the instructions of the trade union.

The largest Russian airlines and their free baggage allowances.

Quite often, even experienced tourists have a question: what kind of cargo can be carried on an airplane? What weight and dimensions of luggage are allowed? How to save money on a flight, avoid paying for your luggage, or what to do if your backpack is lost. We will consider all these issues in detail in the article.

International transportation rules do not regulate clear standards for baggage transportation (each carrier has the right to independently change the numbers within the established rules, ticket price and aircraft type). Baggage is not always checked out individually for each passenger. There are two transportation systems:

  1. Weight.
  2. Local.

The suitcase must be checked at the counter, after which it is sent to the luggage compartment

Weight system

This principle of transportation is relevant in almost all CIS countries and Asia, as well as with some carriers in the European Union. It allows you to carry free luggage of a certain weight:

  • in economy class, the weight of the suitcase should not exceed twenty kilograms, and its dimensions should not exceed 203 centimeters (meaning the sum of length, height and width);
  • in business class, the weight allowed for transportation reaches 30 kilograms with the same bag dimensions.

If your baggage exceeds any established parameter in at least one point, then the carrier may require you to pay for a second “piece” at the domestic rate.

According to the official rules of air carriers, each child under two years of age is guaranteed free baggage allowance weighing up to 10 kilograms. In this case, the child may not have a separate ticket (flies in the same seat with his parents). Children who are already 12 years old are entitled to an “adult” rate of free cargo transportation.

This system is quite convenient, since the number of your bags is not limited, and when traveling together, the weight adds up. If you both take an economy class ticket, then you have the opportunity to take with you one travel bag weighing 40 kilograms, two bags weighing 15 and 25 kilograms, or three with a total weight of up to 43 kg (don’t forget about the dimensions).

Note: Regular airline customers can receive a bonus from it and increase the weight of transported cargo by 10-15 kilograms.

It is very important to ensure there is no overload. The policies of different airlines may vary greatly on this matter. If you are overweight by a kilogram, some carriers can turn a blind eye to this, while others issue a full invoice for the excess weight (quite considerable). Therefore, be sure to inquire in advance about the rules and regulations for transporting baggage on an airplane: they are usually indicated either in the itinerary receipt or on the company’s website.

Baggage enters the compartment via a transport belt

Place system

The weight system is quite convenient, but it is slowly fading into oblivion and being replaced by a local one. Initially, this system worked in the USA and Canada, now it has spread to South and Central America, Europe, Australia and even Russia (Aeroflot recently switched to it). Here the transported mass is also divided depending on the purchased class:

  • in economy you can take one seat with a bag weighing up to 23 kg;
  • The business has two pieces of luggage weighing 32 kg each (total 64 kg).

Note: When flying to the US and Canada, carriers often provide two cargo seats in economy class. Check this information in advance.

If you take advantage of the carriers' bonus program, you can get yourself an additional seat.

One of the main features of the seat system is that the weight of the bags is not cumulative. That is, if you are traveling together in economy class and are carrying two bags weighing 25 and 15 kilograms, then you will be forced to pay for an overload of 2 kilograms (this will be considered as third place). Very often, the cost of a third seat is comparable to the cost of half or a whole flight ticket, especially for low-cost airlines. The situation is the same when traveling on your own - if you have two seats weighing 23 kilograms, then you won’t be able to put two bags of 30 and 10 kilograms on them.

Baggage rules may vary from airline to airline.

Note: Trade unions in many countries prohibit movers from lifting suitcases heavier than 32 kilograms. Having loaded 33 kg, you will not only pay extra for a new place, but also face a serious problem with cargo delivery.

The requirements for a suitcase in a seat system are more stringent - the sum of its three sides should not be more than 158 cm.

Oversized luggage

If the cargo you are transporting does not fall within the above parameters, then you will have to register it as oversized. According to the rules for carrying baggage on an airplane, the following are considered oversized:

  1. A suitcase or bag weighing more than 32 kilograms and measuring more than 203 cm.
  2. Various sports equipment (skis, surfboard and snowboard, trekking poles, etc.).
  3. Musical instruments (guitars, trombones, accordions, etc.).
  4. Various climate and household appliances (air conditioners, washing machines, freezers, refrigerators, TVs).

The carriage of any oversized cargo must be discussed in advance with the airline - if you arrive at the airport an hour before boarding and without warning, there is a high probability that it will simply not be accepted.

Note: the airline may refuse to transport you oversized items. There can be many reasons for this - lack of free space, inappropriate type of aircraft (the cargo may simply not fit into the loading hatches).

Oversize space is always paid according to the company's tariffs (it does not fall under the concept of free space). Although some companies allow free transportation of ski equipment in winter, thus luring customers.

Transportation of fragile luggage

Airline policy allows fragile baggage to be transported on aircraft. To do this, upon delivery, you must declare at the reception that it is fragile. An airport employee will put a special sticker on the suitcase, and the cargo will be delivered to the baggage compartment manually, and not at the elevator. However, the airline does not bear legal responsibility for its integrity. Therefore, it is recommended to take fragile items into the cabin and check them out as hand luggage.

Properly folded luggage will quickly pass inspection

Restrictions

Most airlines prohibit the following substances from being carried in the hold:

  1. Radioactive (note that absolutely all cargo is tested for radioactivity, so if you buy a souvenir and it turns out to be radioactive, you will have serious problems).
  2. Explosives (including cartridges, gunpowder, sparklers, flares, firecrackers, etc.).
  3. Highly flammable (no lighters, refill bottles, gasoline, solvents).
  4. Various gases (self-defense cans and, in some cases, deodorants).
  5. Toxic, oxidizing and poisonous.

It is also prohibited to carry weapons on airplanes (unless there is a special cabinet in the luggage compartment) and dangerous objects that can be used for attack. When transporting weapons, special permits are required, which are issued at customs.

Rules for the carriage of hand luggage

The passenger must distinguish between “baggage” and “hand luggage”. Baggage is a suitcase that is checked in at the airport upon landing. Carry-on luggage is a backpack or bag that you can take with you. The weight of luggage and the weight of baggage on an airplane for one person do not add up.

The following standards exist:

  • In business, luggage dimensions are no more than 115 cm (three dimensions), weight - 15 kg.
  • In economy - 115 cm, 10 kg.

Note: in most cases, you can take additional things with you: a book, a camera, a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet, outerwear, an umbrella, a folding stroller, food for a child, medicine, etc. A full list of these things can be found in the Rules of Transportation of this airline. These items do not add up to the luggage dimensions and weight.

Try to take a little less luggage with you than the airline allows. Sometimes problems can start due to an excess of even 500 grams. Want to avoid trouble? We will tell you a few nuances:

  • before purchasing tickets, study the carrier’s rules regarding luggage (many low-cost airlines do not include it in the ticket price);
  • Once you know how many kilograms you can carry, be sure to weigh your suitcase (this can be done at the nearest post office or on a home scale by picking up the bag);
  • if overloaded, transfer heavy items to hand luggage or simply take them on board (laptop, camera);
  • According to the rules, items in hand luggage must be in plastic bags zipped;
  • if possible, try to register your cargo not as luggage, but as luggage (you will save a lot of time during check-in and will not lose your things).

You can take your laptop with you - it is not carry-on luggage or luggage

If the cargo is lost

So, you already know how much baggage you can carry on a plane. Now we will explain what to do if your cargo does not arrive at its destination with you. At the airport you must receive it using a tag or receipt - it is issued at the point of departure when passing through the counter. If there is no cargo, then you will have to write a statement to search for it. The airline will have to find it within 3 weeks and return it to you. If the suitcase is still missing or damaged, then a second application for compensation is written. Quite often, carriers (especially from CIS countries) send a refusal - feel free to take it and go to court. As a result, you will be compensated for moral and material damage.

Note: the airline should deliver your cargo to the specified address, and not force you to go pick it up. This is a standard rate and does not need to be paid separately.

In contact with

It’s simply pointless to talk about it. On a family trip, you can’t do without suitcases and large bags, baby strollers and other things necessary for a small passenger, most of which are sent on the flight in the luggage compartment of the plane.

And in order for everything to go smoothly at the airport, it is important to know in advance how many things can be carried for free, what are the permitted dimensions and weight of luggage for a purchased ticket on the selected airline, how to organize the transportation of your belongings correctly, how to transport non-standard large items, and what to do in some emergency situations , for example, if your luggage suddenly gets lost or it turns out that there are too many things in your luggage. And today is just about this.

General baggage rules

Air carriers around the world are extremely concerned about flight safety. And for this, strict standards and transportation rules are being developed. Among the priority standards is the calculation of the maximum weight of luggage per passenger. Because excess weight on board is a direct threat to the safety of passengers.

All the things with which a passenger goes on a flight can be called in one word “baggage”, which is conventionally divided into:

  • checked baggage – bags, suitcases, boxes and other items that the passenger parts with at check-in at the airport, entrusting the care of them to his employees;
  • hand luggage - bags, packages and suitcases that will be with him until the end of the flight. Previously, a special tag was attached to them. According to the new rules - no;
  • personal belongings that are transported free of charge in excess of the established limit (the full list can be found in paragraph 135 of the Russian Aviation Rules (FAR)).

Air travel around the world is strictly regulated. All airline carriers and passengers are required to obey the established Rules. For Russian airlines, regarding the carriage of passengers and baggage, various regulatory documents and rules of air transportation are applied, which were amended in accordance with Law No. 409 of October 5, 2017.

According to the law on non-refundable tickets, not only have some of the carry-on and baggage allowances changed, but Russian airlines now have the opportunity to offer passengers cheaper tickets without baggage space, that is, without free baggage allowance, independently determining for which fare to provide baggage.

However, for passengers with tickets whose price includes baggage, a single free baggage allowance has been introduced. This rate cannot be reduced. And if the carrier wants to show generosity and increase the permitted limit upward, please do so. This is not forbidden.

Each carrier has the right to change and establish its own standards, without going beyond the established general rules and without worsening the conditions of service for passengers. The limit may vary (it depends on the carrier’s rules, the type of aircraft, the duration and direction of the flight, the cost of the ticket and class of service), but its maximum weight is limited - no more than 30 kg (previously it was 32 kg) for one seat. Foreign airlines have their own rules that comply with the laws of their countries.

Each specific situation has its own nuances. To avoid mistakes, be sure to check the weight and dimensions of your free baggage, the parameters of which are indicated for a specific fare on the ticket. This information can also be found on the carrier's website.

How much will you have to pay for the advantage?

Sometimes it happens that at the airport counter it suddenly turns out that the suitcase weighs more than indicated on the purchased ticket, and the free baggage allowance has been exceeded in some respect: weight, size or number of seats (depending on the company’s rules). There’s nothing you can do about it; in most cases you’ll have to pay extra for the excess.

The amounts of additional payments vary: from 2500 to 7500 rubles for domestic flights and up to 200 euros for international flights. The amount depends on the carrier’s policy (some of them turn a blind eye to a small overload of 1-2 kg, while others may charge the full amount) and how large the overload is.

Most often, airlines encounter the following restrictions:

  • for economy class – 1 free piece (suitcase/bag) no more than 20-23 kg;
  • for business class – 2 pieces of luggage (each no more than 30-32 kg);
  • based on the sum of three dimensions (length, width, height), luggage should not be more than 158 cm (or 203 cm).

Sometimes it is more profitable to fly on an expensive ticket with heavy luggage than in economy class with an extra charge for excess weight.

Within the maximum permitted limit (at international airports this is 1 piece of luggage no more than 32 kg, according to Russian rules - no more than 30 kg) it is allowed to carry luggage in excess of the free allowance. In this case, you will have to pay extra according to the carrier’s tariffs for excess baggage (that is, for baggage that is not taken into account in the cost of the purchased fare ticket) and agree with him on the transportation of such baggage.

As for low-cost airlines, they often do not have free luggage. For example, with the Russian one, all luggage at the standard non-refundable rate is paid, and its cost depends on the weight and number of pieces. You are allowed to take into the cabin any safe objects (regardless of their weight and any lists) that can be squeezed through a measuring frame with dimensions of 36 x 30 x 27 cm.

How to transport oversized and heavy luggage?

Heavy luggage - according to Russian rules, this is everything that exceeds the weight of one piece of 30 kg.

Oversized baggage is an excess of the baggage allowance in terms of dimensions, that is, 1 piece is more than 203 cm (or 158 cm, as in most airlines). When specifying the size of a packed suitcase (bag), wheels, handles, and pockets are taken into account.

You will have to pay for excess weight, as well as for exceeding dimensions.

Depending on the maximum weight norm established in a particular company (in the order of the Ministry of Transport, the maximum weight of baggage allowed for transportation is 50 kg) and size (exceeding 270-320 cm in total), such heavy and large baggage may not be accepted for transportation even for money.

What should the passenger do in this case? Such items can be sent (of course, after coordinating this with the carrier) along the route as unaccompanied cargo, which is accepted at the cargo terminal in the company's cargo service. You can receive your luggage at the airport of arrival using the cargo bill of lading received during baggage check-in.

What to do if you have non-standard luggage?

Most often these are large, unusual and heavy things: musical instruments, snowboards and surfboards, skis, household appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, TVs, vacuum cleaners) and more. For the carriage of such baggage, airlines prescribe special conditions, indicating the maximum size, weight and contents of one set of baggage, which it is advisable to familiarize yourself with in advance.

Non-standard baggage (most often sports equipment) can be carried free of charge as an addition to the rest of the baggage or as regular baggage within the limits of the ticket fare or for an additional fee. Special conditions may apply, such as no size restrictions that apply to regular baggage. For some types of such non-standard baggage, a fixed fee is established.

Items listed in clause 136 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (baby strollers, walkers, wheelchairs and other baggage) are carried free of charge in checked baggage if it is impossible to place them in the cabin without violating the comfortable and safe conditions for passengers.

Lucky are those who travel with skis and snowboards. Many carriers (for example, Aeroflot from November 1 to May 15) allow passengers to carry ski equipment and snowboards free of charge in addition to their main baggage or without additional payment if they fit into the free baggage weight allowance (often without a size limit).

But, again, you need to double-check everything to be safe. For example, airlines with low fares and low-cost airlines often do not have the option of free transportation of sports equipment. And in some, the permissible weight (usually 20-23 kg) is reduced to 10 kg.

Some destinations (usually long flights) sometimes have their own rules that allow, during certain periods, to carry sets of equipment of a certain weight for surfing and diving without additional payment.

You can also bring golf bags, hockey sticks, fishing rods, and musical instruments for free, if the established rules are not violated. But if the weight, size, number of seats exceed the free limit, then everything listed above will be sent on the flight only with an additional payment.

The passenger must discuss the transportation of such cargo in advance with the carrier company (36 hours before departure). Because it may happen that the airline does not have the conditions for transporting such non-standard baggage (the size of the cargo does not correspond to the type of aircraft or baggage of this size is simply impossible to place on board). Without prior agreement, you may simply not be accepted due to lack of free space.

If it turns out that it is not possible to organize the transportation of non-standard and heavy baggage, then it may be possible to send it as regular baggage with a fee for exceeding the free allowance.

Transportation of fragile luggage

Very often, airline passengers have questions about what to do with fragile and breakable things. The safest way (if possible) is to carry such luggage in the cabin, checking it out as hand luggage. If this is not possible, the baggage will be checked in at check-in with a statement that it requires particularly careful transportation. If such an option is provided by the airline, a special sticker is placed on the cargo and the items are delivered on board manually, and not in the bulk of suitcases on a belt.

Experienced travelers who often fly with non-standard baggage claim that, although many different nuances arise, if you strictly follow the carrier’s rules, everything usually goes as normal.

Advice: when transporting expensive and fragile items, it is advisable to insure your luggage and send it with the declared value (you will have to pay for this service).

And, of course, there is a list of items that will not be allowed to be carried in luggage under any pretext for security reasons.

What is prohibited from being carried on an airplane?

Most airlines do not allow you to carry:

  • anything that is easily flammable and explodes (including firecrackers, sparklers, flares, gunpowder, cartridges, matches, gasoline and gas lighters, solvents, paints, gasoline, acetone, ethyl alcohol and others);
  • gases of various types (liquefied, poisonous, compressed, including cartridges for burners and lighter refills);
  • radioactive, toxic, easily oxidized and corrosive substances (all kinds of acids, alkalis, mercury and devices containing it);
  • rechargeable (lithium-ion) batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh (if the power of devices is from 100 to 160 Wh, they are allowed to be carried inside equipment with the permission of the airline, up to 100 Wh in laptops, phones, inside equipment, while spare batteries can only be carried in hand luggage);
  • any sharp, heavy, cutting objects that could be potentially dangerous to others;
  • firearms, cold steel, electroshock weapons without special permits;
  • electronic cigarettes, magnetized objects.

This list is quite large. It is set out in Appendix 1 to the Rules for pre-flight and post-flight inspections No. 104 dated July 25, 2007.

Is checked baggage allowed for children?

For young travelers from 2 to 12 years old, the same baggage allowance applies as for adult passengers. For children (up to two years old) without a separate seat, free luggage weighing up to 10 kg and no more than 115 cm in total dimensions is allowed.

Is it possible to combine luggage?

The new rules retain the ability to combine items into one baggage at the request of passengers traveling together (two or more) under certain conditions. Moreover, according to Russian rules, one piece of such combined baggage cannot be heavier than 30 kg and exceed 203 cm in size.

Families traveling with one suitcase are sometimes accommodated halfway and are forgiven for being a little overweight. But still, in practice, a lot depends on the pickiness of employees. In each case this is decided individually.

It is not always possible to carry one heavy bag instead of two light ones when traveling abroad: European trade unions protect their loaders and prohibit lifting luggage in excess of the norm.

Naturally, there are exceptions for large luggage that cannot be separated (musical instruments, sports gear and equipment, etc.).

What to do if your luggage is lost?

Have you landed and your items still haven’t appeared on the tape? Don't panic. But some actions need to be taken immediately, without leaving the arrival area. Find the airline service personnel who are searching for lost luggage and, presenting them with your ticket, baggage pass, or passport, make an official written request.

According to Russian laws, the search for missing baggage can last 21 days (how such a search occurs, in some airlines you can track it on the website using the online service). When the missing luggage is found, the carrier is obliged to deliver it to the address specified by the passenger free of charge.

If after three weeks the baggage has not been found or was found but partially or completely damaged, you can apply for compensation from the airline.

International rules establish the maximum amount of compensation payments in the event of loss of luggage or partial damage to it. In fact, in each specific situation, the amount of compensation is determined by the airline and depends on its internal rules. If you are refused compensation for damage caused, you should go to court.

How can I pay less for luggage?

Universal advice for such a case - do not take too much. Sometimes even a small advantage can cause big problems. Especially if this is a trip abroad or you will be using the services of several airlines.

Here you can’t do without studying the rules that apply to different carriers along the route. Otherwise, even if you are overweight by 1-2 kg, you will have to pay extra. And not only this. European loaders, who are prohibited by their unions from lifting luggage heavier than 32 kg, may simply refuse to deliver such cargo.

Be especially careful when purchasing inexpensive tickets on budget airlines or on a baggage-free fare. Often, such tickets cannot be returned if something happens, and you will have to fly light.

Baggage restrictions may occur when purchasing air tickets at promotional rates and promotions, or when using bonuses. Such flights, at first glance, are financially profitable, sometimes involve lower baggage allowances than the standard fare, or even offer a choice of either checked baggage or hand luggage.

There is only one way out - try to take a little less things and leave at least some weight reserve up to the norm established by the carrier, which you need to familiarize yourself with in advance, and take this into account when packing your luggage at home. To do this, having weighed your weight with and without luggage on floor scales at home, it is easy to make simple calculations and, if anything happens, get rid of everything unnecessary and repack the suitcase without hassle and fuss.

Experienced travelers advise putting on the heaviest shoes and plenty of clothing before the flight; small heavy items can be carried in your pockets. Do not take large quantities of care products and cosmetics (sometimes the cost of purchasing them locally is much less than what you will have to spend on paying for the excess).

And you can find a lot of such life hacks. Another one is the ability to pack a suitcase correctly. You can read about what you need to do to take everything you need and save on luggage in this article

Issues related to baggage acceptable for air transportation are quite worrying for many. After all, the rules are constantly changing, some of them becoming stricter. And for many passengers, the size of luggage on an airplane is of fundamental importance. Therefore, it is worth studying the issue in advance so that later, when checking bags into luggage and when weighing hand luggage, no serious problems arise.

Today, carriers use two systems, accepted as the main ones, which allow final calculations for the transportation of bags and suitcases. This:

  1. Weight system
  2. By number of seats

The first option is often used on flights departing to CIS countries and Asia.

An important point in the measurement system is the permissible weight, i.e. the one that is carried free of charge. The gradation of the number of kilograms directly depends on the class of ticket. The following rules apply today:

  • 20 kg per 1 passenger in economy class
  • 30 kg – in business
  • 10 kg per child under 2 years old

In the first system for calculating how much luggage you can take on board, the following principle works: a passenger can take as many bags as he wants, but their weight should not exceed the permissible standard. You will have to pay for all the extra kilos.

The second system implies that the minimum free kilograms must be packed in only one bag or two, if this is provided for by the class of the ticket. That is, if a suitcase is filled by 10 kg, it will already take up the allowable number of seats, and for a second suitcase or travel bag that is not hand luggage, even if it is filled by 5 kilograms, you will still have to pay. This calculation option is used mostly in America. Among Russian companies, Aeroflot introduced a similar scheme most recently. In such a payment system, a bonus is the fact that the free baggage allowance is slightly higher:

  • For economy – 23 kg
  • For business – 32 kg

It is important to understand here that if passengers go on a trip together, their luggage cannot be added up. Everyone is responsible for themselves. As a result, if the bottom one has an advantage, and the other one has a shortage of kilograms in his suitcase, the first one will have to pay extra for the excess.

There is also a bonus for regular customers of the airline - they are provided with benefits on membership cards and for miles in the form of providing an additional number of seats on board the aircraft, or the option of adding a kilogram to the total amount of baggage weight is allowed.

Luggage dimensions

The dimensions of luggage, even for transportation in a special compartment of the aircraft, must be taken into account. Thus, a suitcase whose total width, length and height is equal to 1.58 m is considered standard and acceptable for transportation without any additional procedures other than weighing. This measure is valid for a system that takes into account the number of seats. In the weight system, this indicator should be equal to 2.03 m.

If your luggage is beyond the scope, for example, you are taking skis, a bicycle and other oversized items with you, you will have to check them in at a separate counter, and in some cases you will even have to pay extra. Baggage on an airplane has the same parameters in terms of size and weight in 2018, but it is worth remembering that the situation may change.

After all, the principles for determining the luggage allowed on board are determined by the carrier himself. And it’s worth regularly checking the corresponding section on the airline’s website or calling the hotline to avoid getting into trouble.

Excess baggage

Baggage that exceeds the limits stipulated by the ticket in terms of weight or number of pieces is called excess baggage. And in most cases you will have to pay extra for it. There are, of course, carriers who allow a slight excess - a kilogram or two - without additional payment. But for the most part, you will have to pay money for every kilogram in excess. The cost of excess baggage varies from carrier to carrier. It is worth clarifying in advance how much money you will have to pay for an excess of things if there is no opportunity or desire to shell out the excess.

Heavy luggage

Special attention is paid to luggage that weighs over 30-32 kg. This one is called heavyweight. This also includes those options that go beyond the permissible dimensions:

  • Skis and sports equipment
  • Musical instruments such as guitar or double bass
  • Household appliances, such as an oven or refrigerator

Such cargo can only be transported by agreement with the carrier - he must be notified in advance. On the day of departure, you must arrive early, because... Checking in such luggage takes some additional time. It is worth understanding that the air carrier may refuse to carry luggage, for example, if the luggage compartments are small or there is no space in them.

Fragile luggage

There may be a need to carry fragile luggage - glass, decorative elements, paintings, etc. In this case, you will also have to register it separately and put a corresponding mark on the cargo. If your luggage fits the dimensions of hand luggage, the optimal solution would be to carry it with you into the cabin - this will ensure the integrity of your items.

The issue of carrying hand luggage in 2018 does not lose its relevance. Moreover, the data on it is constantly changing. Changes made to the law are now in effect. Previously, hand luggage included up to 10 kg of free weight, now from 5. But at the same time, air carriers independently determine how much weight they allow to be carried on board. Thus, the country's major airlines announced that they will remain at 10 for now - both for regular tickets and for non-refundable ones.

In general, on average, the following options for carrying hand luggage apply:

  • In business class – 1 piece weighing 15 kg
  • Economy – 1 piece 10 kg

It is important to consider the dimensions of the bag so that it fits all restrictions. So, hand luggage must be packed in a bag 55 cm high, 40 cm wide, 20 cm thick. Some carriers, such as Aeroflot, plan to check compliance with dimensions using special limiting frames, which will allow you to immediately determine all the necessary parameters.
