    Transportation Security Administration

    One of the best air carriers in the world offers the most favorable conditions, the highest level of comfort and flight safety. Qatar Airways baggage and hand luggage also travel under privileged conditions. All company tariffs include increased cargo allowances; a variety of luggage is accepted on board. Even pets feel comfortable here.

    Checked baggage allowance

    In 2019, Qatar Airways baggage allowance is one of the highest in the world. Moreover, additional care for customers is expressed in the specification of requirements for individual destinations - in particular to Africa and back. And on some flights the norms do not depend on the ticket class.

    Even on long routes across the Atlantic, the company is guided by strict requirements regarding the number of seats, weight and dimensions of checked baggage. In this case, the cost of transportation is taken into account immediately when purchasing a ticket. The carrier's official website provides all the relevant information on this issue, taking into account the directions and classes of service on the plane:

    • To/from Brazil. 2 pieces weighing up to 32 kg with the sum of three dimensions (length, height and width) not exceeding 158 cm. The norm applies to all classes of tickets.
    • From/to the USA, Canada, Argentina, and between Argentina and Brazil. Business and first class – 2 pieces weighing up to 32 kg with the sum of the lengths of the sides (L+H+W) no more than 158 cm each; economy - 23 kg with the same dimensions.
    • Between Doha (Qatar) and Casablanca (Morocco). 60 kg in business and first class, 45 kg in economy class with the sum of the lengths of the sides not exceeding 300 cm.
    • From Africa. In first and business class - 65 kg, in economy - 45 kg with the sum of the sides up to 300 cm.
    • All other flights are 50 kg, 40 kg and 30 kg for business, first and economy respectively. The size restrictions are the same - the sum of the sides should not exceed 300 cm.

    The exact rate is always indicated on the ticket.

    The weight of one piece of luggage must not exceed 32 kg.

    Places that are too heavy need to be divided into several. If the weight or number of luggage pieces is exceeded, an additional payment will be charged. Detailed information can be obtained from your nearest Qatar Airways office.

    Qatar Airlines strictly controls what passengers take into the cabin. The company's managers rightly believe that this aspect is considered one of the priorities for clients. The rules here are the most democratic:

    • first and business class – two seats with a total weight of 15 kg with dimensions 50 x 37 x 25 cm;
    • economy - one unit up to 7 kg (flights to/from Brazil - 10 kg) with the same dimensions.

    Laptops are included in hand luggage. Not taken into account:

    • handbag, small case;
    • coat, raincoat, umbrella, crutches or cane;
    • camera or binoculars;
    • printed publications;
    • baby carrycot;
    • Duty Free goods purchased before departure.

    Liquids and gels

    It is allowed to carry liquids, pastes, aerosols and gels in the cabin, but only in factory-packaged containers up to 100 ml each. Partially filled larger containers are not permitted.

    The number is not specified, but the tubes and cans must be in a transparent and always tightly closed bag with a volume of 1 liter and a size of no more than 20 x 20 cm, which will have to be submitted separately for inspection. The restrictions do not apply to medications and baby food. But employees have the right to inquire about prescriptions for medications.

    Special types of baggage

    The ability to take extra luggage with you is always an important indicator of the loyalty of any carrier. Qatar Airways allows special categories of cargo on its aircraft within the limits specified on the ticket, including sports equipment:

    • bicycles with flat tires, pedals removed, packed in special boxes made of thick cardboard;
    • diving equipment with empty cylinders and packed flashlights and knives;
    • fishing equipment – fishing rods and nets in packaged form;
    • golf bags and clubs;
    • musical instruments. Fragile items weighing up to 75 kg and length up to 120 cm are allowed to be transported with an additional ticket;
    • A wheelchair is available on wide-body aircraft A330, A340 and B777. Personal items are carried free of charge and are not included in the baggage allowance.

    Planned transportation of large equipment or special category baggage must be agreed with the local representative of the carrier. A company permit for the transport of sporting weapons (must be unloaded and packaged) and ammunition (only 1.4S, UN 0012 or UN 0014) is required. Ammunition is allowed up to 5 kg per passenger.

    Transportation of animals

    Carriage of animals in the cabin is prohibited, except for falcons beloved by Arabs and guide dogs respected throughout the world. A passenger can take one falcon in economy class. There cannot be more than six birds in the cabin at the same time. The falcon must be in a hood and tied to the arm of a chair.

    Guide dogs are only allowed in the cabin on flights to/from the United States. On other routes - only as checked baggage. In the same way, pets and other animals are allowed to be transported for an additional fee. There must be a container with good ventilation, food and water for the duration of the flight.

    Breeds of cats and dogs prone to heat stroke (the list is on the company's website) are not accepted. For example, transportation of a Pekingese, Pug or Shar Pei will be denied. They will not take an exotic shorthair or Persian cat. Also, weak, lactating females under 8 weeks old, cats and dogs with a pregnancy period of more than 6 weeks are not taken on board.

    Restrictions

    In accordance with international regulations and to ensure safety, the company implements restrictions on the transportation of certain items.

    For hand luggage

    Items that pose a safety risk or pose a risk of injury are prohibited from transportation in the cabin:

    • Weapons – firearms, pneumatic, antique and their components; dummies, as well as toys that fire shots.
    • Stun guns, pepper and tear gas canisters, animal repellents, and so on.
    • Piercing and cutting objects, including scissors and martial arts equipment.
    • Tools – saws, drills, screwdrivers, screwdrivers, blowtorches.
    • Heavy impact equipment - baseball bats, hockey sticks, police batons.
    • Explosives, incendiary substances and devices (and their exact copies) - fireworks, firecrackers, ammunition, fuel.

    Oddly enough, matches are not prohibited. Passengers flying to the US are not permitted to carry any electronic devices other than phones, smartphones and essential medical devices. All electronics, laptops, tablets and DVD players on these routes are transported in the luggage compartment.

    In the luggage compartment

    It is prohibited to take into baggage substances that pose a threat to the health of the crew and passengers:

    • Caustic – mercury, acids, alkali and liquid batteries.
    • Infectious – for example, bacteria and viruses.
    • Poisonous - cyanide, arsenic, insecticides against insects and weeds.
    • Radioactive.
    • Oxidizing agents and organic peroxides.
    • Any compressed gases.
    • Flammable (liquid and solid) - such as fuel or paint.
    • Explosives, including fireworks, New Year's crackers, signal flares.

    For batteries and personal electric vehicles

    The ability to transport lithium batteries is determined by their configuration (size and installation location) and capacity, or lithium content:

    • Small ones - with a capacity of up to 100 Wh are available in mobile phones, watches, players and laptops. Allowed for transportation in hand luggage and baggage without restrictions. Spares are not accepted as baggage.
    • Medium - with a capacity of 100-160 Wh are found in laptops and audiovisual equipment. Allowed, with the operator's permission, for transportation in hand luggage (spare - up to 2 pieces) and luggage (except for spare).
    • Large - industrial, used in some electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as mobility aids and scooters, with a capacity of over 160 Wh are declared and transported in the cargo compartment.

    Spare batteries must be protected from short circuiting (the terminals are sealed with adhesive tape) and placed in the original packaging or plastic bag. They cannot be checked in as luggage. Batteries of laptops, cameras and mobile phones are switched off during flight. Small electric vehicles, such as Segways, unicycles, hoverboards, hoverboards, and so on, are not permitted, regardless of the capacity of the lithium batteries powering such devices.

    Excess baggage

    If the weight of your luggage or its dimensions exceeds the limits set by the carrier, an additional fee will be required. After purchasing your ticket, you can make a payment in the Manage Booking section (for Qatar Airways flights, without partners). This can also be done at the company’s offices, through a call center or during check-in for a flight. But luggage will cost $5-20 per kg more than when paying online.

    In any case, payment in the currency of the country of departure must be made no later than 3 hours before the flight.

    If payment through the site has not been completed, the company has the right to refuse the online discount.

    The cost of excess baggage is determined by the destinations. The price for one extra kg varies from 12 to 70 US dollars. The table below shows that the cheapest flight is with an overload through the Indian Peninsula and Iran, the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Levant. And, of course, through Qatar.

    The presented tariffs are valid only on the lines of the Qatari carrier. If the flight includes flights of other airlines, the cost of excess baggage must be confirmed with Qatar Airways representatives.

    On flights across the Atlantic (to/from the USA, Argentina, Brazil and Canada), excess baggage is counted not by kilograms, but by units. For an additional place when paying online, you need to pay $200 (250 at the registration desk or in the office), and for a unit that exceeds the weight requirements (within 23-32 kg), you will have to pay $50-65, respectively.

    For flights between Buenos Aires and Brazil, the fare is $75 if paid online and $100 if paid otherwise. The calculation unit is taken to be a place weighing 5 kg.

    For infants traveling in the arms of their parents, the free rate is 1 seat. Everything else is charged at the adult rate. Payment for excess baggage checked for infants is not allowed on the site. It is non-refundable, although changing the departure date within the itinerary is acceptable.

    The decision to accept cargo on board is communicated during the check-in process. If excess baggage cannot be taken due to lack of space or schedule changes, payment will be refunded or transportation will be offered on another flight on the same route.

    Lost or damaged luggage

    If upon arrival at the destination airport the baggage cannot be collected, the company will make every effort to find it. As a rule, this takes no more than a day (if there are no delays at customs), and the items are delivered to the passenger’s hotel or home.

    Expenses caused by delayed luggage (for example, buying clothes, etc.) are reimbursed by the company after providing sales receipts and receipts. If baggage is lost (not found within three weeks), its cost is compensated in accordance with the Montreal Convention for the Unification of Rules for Air Carriage dated May 28, 1999.

    It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure that their luggage is well packed and securely closed. Lost items must be reported at the counter in the collection area before leaving the terminal. The passenger will be issued documentary confirmation of acceptance of the claim (Property Irregularity Report, or PIR), after which, within 7 days, he must submit an electronic application through the “My Baggage” service (on the company’s website).

    If the passenger does not report damage when handing over the bags/suitcases, the luggage is considered delivered intact. Personal items left on board the aircraft, at the boarding gate or in the terminal will be returned immediately after informing baggage handling. Found passports and documents are transferred to local airport services. Unclaimed items are usually kept for 30 days, after which they are disposed of or donated to the poor.

    The company’s website has a service for searching for forgotten items (Lost & Found, or “Lost and Found”), where you can check whether the items left behind were found in the salon or terminal. If you follow the link, a form will open in which you need to indicate the category of the item, give its description, indicate the date of loss and approximate location, and then initiate a search. If the items are among those found, all that remains is to contact the company’s employees and arrange transportation.

    Baggage tracking

    The Qatar Airways website also includes a baggage tracking feature. If you follow the “Track Baggage” link, a Baggage tracker with a special form will open. The status of traveling items can be determined:

    • by bag tag number issued upon check-in;
    • by digital reservation code (six-digit number).

    In all cases, the last name must be indicated, and then the Search button is pressed. If you have filed a complaint about mishandling of your luggage, you can track your items using its file reference number.

    Conclusion

    There are no fewer nuances with luggage than there are possibilities for transporting it. If you fly regularly to one destination, getting up to speed is not a problem. On your first flight with any airline, it is always advisable to take less luggage. Only hand luggage is better, especially since the Qataris have almost the same parameters as the luggage of other carriers.

    By the way, on the Russian-language version of the site, online search and luggage tracking do not always work (pages often simply do not open). Therefore, it is recommended to use English. And you should be interested in issues of transshipment, transportation of special cargo and animals in advance.
