How to get to Australia. Independent travel to Australia with one hundred dollars How to go to Australia on vacation

Many people in the world, regardless of nationality and age, would like to travel to the green continent of Australia, enchanting with its landscapes. But, as they say, there is little desire, because to go there for the weekend you need to shell out a considerable sum, which not everyone has. In this article you will learn how to travel to Australia economically, because to do this you just need to completely plan your vacation in advance.

Visa and flight

As with any trip, you will first need a visa. It is not difficult to get it, since Australia is very loyal to tourists of Ukrainian nationality. To obtain such a visa you do not need to go to the embassy. You just need to send a copy of your passport and documents to the email of the embassy in Moscow. You can receive it in about two weeks, and it costs one hundred and thirty dollars.

To get to the continent we need, we will have to change planes several times. At the same time, there is a very large selection of different airlines. Skyscanner makes it easy to find cheap flights to your destination. You can also save money if you book tickets 3 months, or even a year in advance. On average, a flight from Kyiv to and back can cost around one thousand five hundred dollars. It will be more expensive to go there on New Year or Christmas than in the off-season, but you can also save money on this. Flight and visa costs are the most expensive, but don’t worry.

Domestic flights to Australian cities

The best airlines for Australians flying between cities across the continent are Virgin Blue, Tiger Airways and Jetstar. These air buses transport hundreds of tourists every day. Regional airline Rex is one of the best options for travelers, as you have the opportunity to fly unlimitedly for about two months to King's Island, also called Kangaroo Island, as well as Coober Pedy. The cheapest time to buy tickets is on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Travel for a dollar a day

Australia has many wild, untouched places. And the cheapest way to get there is to use Campervanning. And if you are undemanding, then most likely there will be a chance to even make a small profit from this. Camperwaning is the Australian way of traveling around the continent by car. You will be given a set route, there is even a chance that you will also be paid for gas. Renting such a vehicle for 6 people will cost you only one dollar per day. Paying for gas is an excellent PR move for such enterprises; thanks to this, you can easily travel around the entire mainland, spending money only for a few extra kilometers on the road. The only thing you will need is to obtain an international driving license. So stock up on groceries and go on an adventure!

Where to stay in Australia

If you are planning to spend the night at a hotel, then you should take a standard room with breakfast included. If you want to save on this too, then you should think about renting a personal apartment, a rented room in a house, or spending the night in a hostel. A tourist should immediately know that Australian hostels are much worse than European ones and this option may ultimately disappoint many. Even when booking your accommodation, you should find out exactly where you will be staying the night. Renting an apartment or other housing, and, of course, spending the night in a hostel will cost you at least three times cheaper than even the cheapest hotel room. Also in this way you can meet the owners of rental housing, learn from them where to go, what to try and how to plunge into the atmosphere of their mentality. Rent a house for a week for a group of six people will cost five hundred dollars.

You can also try couchsurfing by registering on a site where people rent out homes to earn extra money. All the people there are verified, you definitely won’t be deceived, and you absolutely won’t end up in some strange place. You can also offer an exchange, you will spend the night for free with the person you choose, and in return he will stay with you. If you're lucky, you can find luxury accommodation in the city center.

Where can you eat cheap in Australia?

If you constantly eat in restaurants and cafes during your stay in Australia, you will really spend a lot of money on it, because the dishes there are really expensive. You should purchase various seasonal products in advance in stores or at the market, and then cook yourself. The products sold there are always fresh and of high quality. If you rent an apartment, house or room, you will not have any problems with cooking. If you decide to live in a hostel, then you should find out in advance whether there will be a kitchen there. Although eating in Australian restaurants is not cheap, you can still find places where for a few dollars you can eat so that you will not be hungry all day. We have made a list with such places.

  • In the city of Sydney, in the old shipyard, there is one cute cafe, Doyle's. It is located next to the Sydney National Park. A delicious lunch in the fresh air will cost you only thirteen dollars.
  • In Melbourne, there is one little-known cafe called Cutler & Co, where you can eat delicious dishes made from fresh ingredients for about fourteen dollars.
  • In Adelaide Central Market you can buy excellent fresh seafood, meat, bread and much more for mere pennies.
  • There is one cozy place in Brisbane called The Crosstown Eating House. The excellent interior of the twenties and delicious food will definitely please any tourist. There you can buy two dishes, dessert and a drink for only twenty dollars.
  • In the city of Darwin there is a market that locals call Parap Village. It won’t cost you much at all, and you can buy as many delicious fruits, vegetables and fresh fish as you want.

Where to meet interesting animals in Australia

You can't visit Australia without encountering exotic, wild animals. Of course, they won't be jumping on the streets. You can meet kangaroos, koalas and other Australian wildlife at Taronga Central Zoo. Of course, seeing them in their own wild and untouched habitat will be a much better option than in a zoo. Moreover, meeting them “on their territory” will be completely free. Now we will tell you about places where you can look at preserved nature for free

Grampians National Park - 270 kilometers northwest of Melbourne - and you'll see kangaroos.

- Just an hour's drive from the center of Sydney is the Blue Mountains National Park. Arriving here in the morning, you will definitely meet a kangaroo and even be able to watch it (entry by car costs $7).

— At the Murramarang National Park beach tent camp, kangaroos rest right on the beach.

— Bowling Green Bay National Park is home to amazing tree-wallabies, the cutest of which you have never seen.

— You can watch wombats in Wilsons Promontory National Park. These animals are not at all afraid of people. The park is located 225 km southeast of.

Mobile communications in Australia

The cheapest mobile phone option in Australia is to buy your own SIM card. Just insert it into your phone and for thirty dollars a month you will get free access to these services. It will be cheaper to take a tariff from a small company than from a large and well-known one, this is also great for saving money. For experienced travelers, Three's rates are ideal. It's cheap and if you ever lose connection it will automatically connect to Telstra. She, in turn, always catches even in the most uninhabited corners of this continent. This company can also offer you unlimited Internet services for sixty dollars a month.

Perhaps, you can start exploring your Australian community with a completely prosaic question - how much does a trip to Australia cost?

Since travelers interested in Australia often contacted me with questions about the cost of the trip, I decided to make an estimate and published such an article on our website.

The article is very popular among readers - and I decided to copy this material into this community. I tried to take into account all the most important expenses, but, naturally, the travel budget can vary both up and down. For example, if you wait for a special offer from a budget airline and grab the cheapest ticket, and in Australia itself live in a motel and eat fast food, then the amount will be different. But I still tried to take some real values, so that a traveler with an average income and above could calculate the budget for the trip.

So, How much does a trip to Australia cost?

We can talk endlessly about how amazing and unique the smallest continent is. However, due to the practicality of the vast majority of tourists and the very natural desire to optimize travel costs, the most common and frequently asked question among travelers is “How much does a trip to Australia cost?”
Especially for those who dream of seeing the Sydney Opera House, catching the gold rush, discovering the Great Barrier Reef, seeing a koala with their own eyes and finally finding out what a wombat looks like, we are publishing a “Price Guide”.

Visa: nuances and subtleties

In search of civilized ways to save on travel, the best solution would be to apply for a visa yourself. It is no secret that when purchasing tours to Australia (as well as to all other countries that require a visa), many of us are faced with the imposition of travel agency policies. But, if you consistently follow the Russian folk proverb “The eyes are afraid, but the hands are active,” it is quite possible to apply for a visa yourself, saving at least US$ 150 (the minimum payment for travel agency services for issuing a visa is US$ 250). Please note that if you obtain a visa yourself, it will cost US$ 100 (information as of March 27, 2010, we recommend checking the current visa fee on the DIAC Immigration Department page). In this case, the period for obtaining a visa on your own will be equal to the period specified by the intermediary, namely from 10 days to 2 weeks. (Many of our clients receive their tourist visas in just 2-3 working days - this is quite achievable by submitting a full package of documents to the Australian Embassy). And if there is no difference, why pay more? For urgent visa processing (3 days) tour. firms will take twice as much (US$ 450 - 500).

Despite the rather impressive package of documents required to obtain a visa, collecting it is realistic and completely easy! Moreover, personal presence at the embassy when submitting an application is not necessary. Therefore, if you can’t get out of work, you can entrust the procedure to your agent (anyone can act as an agent: for example, your relative or friend). You will find a complete list of documents for obtaining a tourist visa on the official website of the Australian Embassy in Russia: And remember: to obtain a tourist visa in Australia, you DO NOT need to buy a tour to Australia, book air tickets or a hotel room. The main thing is to collect a complete package of documents that will confirm your intention to return back to your homeland.

*** Advice: translate all submitted documents into English. This will have a positive impact on the decision to issue a visa and will speed up the process.

However, for those who are acutely short of time and prefer to entrust visa processing to specialized companies, we recommend checking with a representative of the company you have chosen whether they are members of the Aussie Specialists program. The fact is that these companies are accredited by the Australian Embassy and have the ability to quickly (up to 48 hours) issue up to 80% of tourist visas.

So, the cost of an Australian tourist visa is US$ 100.

Tickets: drive, sail or fly?

Of course, the best and fastest way to get to the mainland is by plane. Given the remoteness of Australia, travel by ship can take several weeks, and there are no trains. Airplanes are good! But, returning to the purpose of the article, you need not just “good”, but “cheap and cheerful”.

Unfortunately, there are no non-stop flights to Australia yet. Flight changes occur in Asia (Bangkok, Dubai, Beijing, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi). In the range of US$ 1300 - US$ 1700 rubles you can find tickets from Air China, China Eastern Airlines, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Thai Airways, Korean Air, Japan Airlines and Emirates Airlines. Flights with Singapore Airlines will cost more (from US$ 2,000). The most convenient and fastest connection is offered by Thai Airways - with them a flight from Moscow to the East Coast of Australia (Melbourne, Sydney) will take about 19 hours. "Chinese" (Air China, China Eastern) offer the cheapest tickets - if you're lucky, you can buy a ticket for 30,000 rubles. Perhaps the best option in terms of price-quality ratio is the offer of the Arab airlines Etihad Airways: good service, affordable prices and convenient connections in Abu Dhabi.

But the real hunters for the cheapest tickets go... to Bangkok! Tickets from Moscow to Bangkok and back today can be purchased from many airlines, and with a special offer you can fly for US$ 500. From Bangkok with the budget airline Air Asia, a flight to Melbourne will cost approximately US$ 350. Of course, this method of saving is not the easiest, but optimal for those who, in pursuit of adventure, are not looking for easy ways.

***Tip - to find the best international flight option, use online booking services. For example, www.pososhok.ru or www.skyscanner.ru

In addition, when talking about the cost of flights, based on a standard two-week holiday on the mainland, it would not be out of place to mention domestic flights. The approximate price of air tickets in the direction "Melbourne - Sydney", "Sydney - Gold Coast" is US$ 50 - 70 for each flight. However, those who are especially lucky will receive a “bird of luck” in the form of air tickets from Tiger Airways for only AU$ 1. Yes, yes! For just AUD 1 you can take on an exciting trip and save a lot of money. By the way, the same airline also offers 15 dollar air tickets. The main thing is to “catch” them!

*** Tip - to find the best option for flights around Australia, use the online service www.webject.com.au

So, the average cost of an air ticket “Moscow - Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane” will be US$ 1500

The cost of domestic flights around the country starts from about US$ 50 depending on the route.

Accommodation and meals

The cost of accommodation and food is the most important component of any trip.

Australia's largest cities boast a huge selection of hotels, and therefore a wide price range. The average bill at a 3* hotel is US$ 100/day. Accordingly, four-star hotels will cost slightly more - US$ 140. The estimated cost of daily accommodation in 5* hotels is US$ 210 (as a calculation base - a double standard DBL room).

So, the average cost of staying in a 4-star hotel (in a good location in the city center) will be about US$ 70 per night - based on double occupancy.

As a rule, the cost of accommodation does not include the cost of food (or only includes breakfast). The average bill for lunch at a café is US$25, while a hearty dinner (including an appetizer, main course, dessert and glass of wine) at a first-class restaurant will cost approximately US$75.

*** Advice - one of the nice features of Australian restaurants is that many of them have the “BYO” (Bring Your Own) option, i.e. the opportunity to bring your own alcohol and pay relatively little money to open a bottle (about US$ 3) - talk about saving...

So, the average cost of food will be US$ 100 for one day. Of course, you can eat much more modestly (and not necessarily fast food) - it all depends on your appetite, tastes and capabilities.

Excursions: “do it yourself” or trust the professionals

Returning to the purpose of our trip - to visit the “Red Center of Australia”, see the 12 Apostles Rocks with our own eyes or watch the Penguin Parade - we cannot fail to mention the cost of the most popular excursion tours. There are 3 options to choose from:

Option 1. Renting a car. It's great to rent a car and go on an adventure. The undoubted advantage of road travel is the freedom of choice and freedom of movement! The disadvantage of this type of tourism: unusual left-hand traffic, heavy fines for the slightest speeding. Also, if you don’t really like driving a car yourself or want to completely relax on vacation, and at the same time listen to interesting stories about the country from a professional guide, perhaps the second or third option is more suitable for you. For your information, car rental in Australia starts from US$ 60/day; the longer the rental period, the lower the price.

Option 2: Book excursions directly from local tour operators. You choose which excursions you are interested in - and book directly with local Australian host tour operators. The advantages are obvious: you get a qualified guide, comfortable transport, a rich and interesting program. You can choose the excursions that interest you. Disadvantages: as a rule, excursions are carried out along some standard route; also, in a large tour group of 20 to 40 people, mobility is often lost. As a rule, such excursions last from 4 hours (small sightseeing excursions) to two to three days in several cities at once. Costs range from US$65 (for a half-day city tour in large buses) to several hundred dollars (for multi-day excursions, or for VIP service). Our company "Gidey-Tour Australia" is just a host tour operator - we offer excursion services and individual tours around Australia for small tours. groups up to 10 people. A one-day, all-inclusive, action-packed excursion in a small group of 6 to 10 travelers will cost around US$200 per person.

Option 3. Buying a tour to Australia. Perhaps the easiest option is to buy a tour in your country, which usually includes accommodation and air tickets, as well as several standard excursions.

Organizing your own vacation on your own will allow you to move away from standard offers, choosing only what is really interesting to you.

If you decide to go to Australia on your own, sightseeing will be left to your discretion. Perhaps in Melbourne you would be interested in a leisurely stroll through Chinatown on your own or an exciting one-day wine tour - tasting boutique wines and strawberries on the Mornington Peninsula? And on the Gold Coast, would you prefer visiting theme parks and attractions to a passive beach holiday?

The decision about whether to take the organization of travel completely into your own hands or to trust tour operators is a decision everyone makes for themselves. In fairness, it is worth noting that both the first and second options have their advantages. Do you want a trip that meets all your needs without breaking your pocket? Then, without fear, act on your own! Do you want to entrust the solution of all organizational problems to a tour operator? Be prepared to relax and pay for the tour.

So, let's calculate how much a trip to Australia will cost.

Let's take a fairly standard trip as a basis - 10 days on the east coast of Australia, with double accommodation in a 4* hotel. Calculation - per traveler.

Prices are in US dollars.

How much does it cost to travel to Australia?

And what to see in three weeks

My husband and I spent 600 thousand rubles on a three-week trip to Australia in March 2018.

Anna Denisova

blogger and traveler

We visited the Great Barrier Reef, the island of Tasmania and three major cities: Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

Friends from Russia ask how it was possible to squander so much in just three weeks. And friends from Australia wonder how we survived.

I carefully planned the trip and recorded expenses during the trip. I’ll tell you where we went, how much and what we ended up spending on.

Visas

We applied for visas ourselves. The application was submitted on the website of the Australian Embassy. It’s very convenient: you don’t have to go and bring the originals, everything is submitted through the website.

RUB 12,791

cost two visas

We needed:

  1. A copy of your international passport - a photo from your phone will do.
  2. Confirmation of previous trips - attached photos of old visas.
  3. Bank account statement in English.
  4. List of previous places of work and study in English on a special form.
  5. A certificate from the employer confirming income and vacation for the dates of the trip.
  6. Trip plan - attached a Word file with a list of cities and dates.

Airplane tickets and hotel reservations are not needed: the Australian Embassy does not recommend paying for flights and accommodation before obtaining a visa.

We paid the consular fee - $140 (6403 RUR) and $1.47 (67 RUR) commission for payment by card. This money cannot be returned, even if the visa is denied. The fee must be paid on the embassy website at the rate assigned by them. At the time of payment, it asked for 45.21 rubles for the Australian dollar, and the Central Bank - 44.99 rubles.

The national currency of Australia is the Australian dollar.

The period for issuing an Australian visa depends on the workload of the consulate. The embassy website has a special section with average waiting times. In my case, they promised to consider the application in a maximum of 35 days, but the visa arrived after 40. I justify the delay by the New Year holidays.

Australian visa is electronic. It is not pasted into your passport; instead, upon entry, they simply check in the database whether you have it or not. They sent us a modest letter with a visa by email.

Tickets to Australia

You can fly to Australia from Russia only with a transfer. The journey takes almost a day. The cheapest tickets for our dates were from Air China. We decided to overpay 10 thousand rubles and fly Etihad Airways: they have shorter transfers and we can fly through Abu Dhabi, where we have never been before.

At Etihad Airways and Emirates, tickets include one piece of baggage each, up to a maximum of 30 kg, and at Air China - two pieces of 23 kg per person. This is convenient for many, but I travel with a minimum of things. The bags that the Chinese carry with them on the plane irritate me.

RUB 125,491

spent on two tickets Moscow - Sydney - Moscow with a transfer to Abu Dhabi

We bought tickets three weeks before departure and paid the same as if we had paid for the flight 4 months in advance.

I travel a lot, but I have never paid 62,745 RUR for one ticket. My hands were shaking a little when I confirmed the purchase of non-refundable tickets for 125,491 RUR.

Flying around Australia

We decided to explore the country as much as possible in one trip, because we will not fly to such a distance again soon or ever. Therefore, we decided to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the island of Tasmania and three large cities: Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. They budgeted a week for Sydney, and 2-3 days for everything else.

We traveled around the country by rented car and airplanes. You can also travel by trains and intercity buses, but we didn’t use them.

In Australia, traveling by plane is as easy as in Russia by bus. Tickets are relatively inexpensive: we flew from city to city four times, and for two we paid 58,756 RUR.

My Australian friends advise planning even small trips 2-3 months in advance: Australians love to travel around the country and quickly buy tickets. I found out about this when I paid five times more than planned for a flight from Tasmania to Melbourne. Three weeks before departure there were still cheap tickets, but a week later they were sold out.

You can only take hand luggage weighing up to 7 kg on the plane for free. Therefore, when booking tickets, we also paid for luggage. The price depends on the weight - for a 15-kilogram small suitcase we paid 15-20 $ (687 -916 R).

It happens that luggage and hand luggage are not weighed at the airport. But it’s better not to count on it: one time we decided to take a risk and took an extra bag with gifts. It was on this flight that the luggage was counted and weighed. I had to pay an additional $72 (3299 RUR). You could almost buy another ticket with this money.

Flights within Australia - $1,244.64 (RUR 57,032)

Sydney - Tasmania Island

$232.32 (RUR 11,119)

Tasmania - Melbourne

$487.88 (RUR 23,351)

Melbourne - Gold Coast

$230.3 (RUR 11,022)

Gold Coast - Sydney

$222.14 (9952 R)

Unplanned baggage

72 $ (3312 R)

Australian airports have a separate area for domestic flights. There are no queues: online check-in is available for all flights. You can check in and receive your luggage using a QUAR code - it must be shown to an airport employee or scanned at the self-check-in counter. Baggage acceptance ends 20 minutes before departure.

Pre-flight screening takes less than five minutes. There are no usual restrictions on the volume of liquid carried; only piercing and dangerous objects are prohibited. In some cases, screening officers may ask you to open your bag and show what’s inside. Our quadcopter raised suspicion twice, but everything turned out okay.

All flights lasted an hour and a half: you had just taken off and were already landing. Food on the plane is available only for an additional fee; you need to order food during online check-in for your flight. I have never seen anyone use this service.

Car rental

We traveled two thousand kilometers by car: 500 km around the island of Tasmania and 1500 km from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, the closest eastern point of the Great Barrier Reef. We spent 39,986 rubles on rent and gasoline.

Opal cards are sold at the central station, newsstands and supermarkets. You can top up your card at terminals at any station; a list of all points is also available on the company’s website.

We liked to take the ferry from home to the city center because it has a beautiful route: within ten minutes of the journey you have time to enjoy the view of the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. This won’t surprise the locals; they sit inside the ferry all the way, staring at their phones. One trip cost $5.88 (270 RUR) per person.

We bought two cards for $40 (1840 RUR) and used them to pay for ferry travel three times.

In total, we spent approximately 28,600 RUR on public transport.

Entertainment

Almost all of our entertainment was related to nature. And in Australia there are many animals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

In Sydney. We liked Taronga Zoo for its combination of nature and urbanism: a giraffe against the backdrop of skyscrapers is an interesting sight. A ticket can be purchased in advance on the zoo's website for $42.3 (1946 RUR) or at the entrance for $47 (2162 RUR).

We spent one day in Sydney walking around the Sea Life Sydney aquarium. It is considered one of the best in the world because of its hundred-meter glass tunnels, which contain rare species of fish, sharks and rays. We paid for tickets at $42 (1932 RUR) per person, but could have saved by purchasing for $33.6 (1546 RUR) in advance on the aquarium website.

With a single ticket for $70 (3220 RUR) you can visit the aquarium, wax museum, Sydney Tower and Wild life zoo. This is profitable: tickets to each place separately will cost $154 (7084 RUR). But we were only interested in the aquarium.

On the Great Barrier Reef we lived right on the reefs. We also wanted to look at the underwater world at great depths, so we took an excursion at the hotel for $50 (2300 RUR) per person. We were taken by boat away from the island. We swam in the ocean with snorkels for an hour and admired the fish and corals. I almost died of fear when a shark swam past me. It turns out that not all sharks eat people. The reef fish that live there are safe.

Internet and communications

When we travel, we constantly need the Internet: read news on Telegram and check email, post photos and stories on Instagram, call colleagues and family.

7026 R

spent on the Internet

For this, free Wi-Fi in airports, cafes and apartments is not enough, so we used a special tourist SIM card. In Australia, we paid 0.01 euros per 1 MB. The call quality was excellent. We did not limit ourselves on the Internet and were often too lazy to ask for the password for free Wi-Fi. As a result, we spent RUR 6,106 for two people during the entire trip.

The only place where there was no connection was the Great Barrier Reef. There we bought Wi-Fi in the hotel. For two days we paid 920 rubles. In total, we spent 7026 RUR on the Internet.

Shopping

All stores accept cards. Cash is not a thing in Australia. You can pay with them, but no one does that. We always used a map too.

Prices for clothes are the same as in Russia, sometimes a little lower: I bought a swimsuit for $69 (3174 RUR). In the Moscow online store the same costs 3990 RUR.

RUB 73,920

spent on shopping and gifts

From Australia you need to bring rum from the famous local company Bundaberg. We made a special trip to the factory of the same name, where they can write anything on the label. A regular bottle costs $39.99 (1840 RUR), and with an inscription - 49.99 $ (2300 RUR).

We also brought home a kilogram of traditional Australian macadamia nuts. We bought them in a regular supermarket for $50 (2300 RUR). I am a passion fruit fan, so I bought 20 pieces for $1.5 (69 RUR) at the local market.

In Russia, Australia is associated with kangaroos, so we took jerky as gifts - dried kangaroo, emu and crocodile meat, for $4-10 (184-460 RUR) per pack.

Many products and things of animal origin, more than 2.25 liters of alcohol and 25 cigarettes cannot be imported into Australia. There are no export restrictions. Current rules for importing products are described

In total, we spent 73,920 RUR on shopping and gifts.

Results

Three weeks later, we became 605,501 R poorer, but we lived our whole lives in another part of the world. This time was enough to cover the main cities, but not enough to rest. We were exhausted, constantly moving from place to place.

If you want to repeat our feat, remember:

  1. The flight is long and expensive, if you decide to pay this money, fly for a long time.
  2. Plan to visit multiple cities: Domestic flights are inexpensive and convenient.
  3. Plan your movements around the country: the closer to the date, the greater the chance that Australians have already bought everything.
  4. If you want to save on food, buy food in supermarkets and markets.
  5. You can safely live in cheap places, even the rooms in other people's apartments are very comfortable.

Preparing for independent travel is a task that takes time. You need to collect information, deal with all the stages, book and pay for flights, places to stay, methods of travel, and so on and so on. It is not always possible to give this the necessary attention. And in fact, it may happen that reality is very different from promises and expectations. Australia, although the smallest, is still a continent, and the distances here are not at all childish.

Australia and the countries of Oceania are one of the most inaccessible and expensive regions for travelers from the CIS. However, he is quite interesting. The material below will discuss how to make your trip to these regions as cheap as possible.

Geography and entry point

When you are looking for tickets to distant regions, you should not look at tickets immediately to the final destination or a specific city where you want to go, but to major entry points. In this case, there are only two of them - Sydney (Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand). From these cities it will be convenient to travel to all districts.

I would like to say right away that the IATA code for Sydney (needed to search for air tickets) is SYD, for Auckland - AKL.

There are several search options:

  1. From your city directly to Sydney. If you are flying from Kyiv, then with 1 or 2 transfers in the UAE and Singapore. From Moscow, then most likely it will be a flight with 1 transfer in China or the UAE. In general, it is profitable for Russian residents to fly to Sydney via Moscow. From Minsk there are 2 transfers: the first is somewhere in Europe, and the second is in the UAE or Singapore. There are also routes with 1 change in the UAE. It is worth noting that such a search algorithm will not give you the cheapest tickets.
  2. Via Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur can be reached from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan with 1 or 2 transfers. Low-cost airline AirAsia (http://www.airasia.com/) flies from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney. It offers very cheap flights to the specified destination.
  3. Via Beijing and Kuala Lumpur. This is a universal route from any city. If you have not found a profitable flight to Kuala Lumpur, then first go to Beijing, from there to Kuala Lumpur, and only then to Singapore. This option may turn out to be the cheapest, because you can already fly from Beijing with AirAsia flights.

Algorithm for searching tickets to Auckland

There are also different options here:

  1. From your city directly to Auckland. It is profitable for residents of Russia to fly to Auckland via Moscow; prices from other cities will be much more expensive. Even from Kyiv and Minsk it is also more profitable to fly through Moscow. A flight from Moscow often includes 1 or 2 transfers in China or the UAE. This is the most expensive option.
  2. Through Beijing. This way you can fly from any city. Chinese airlines fly from Beijing to Auckland at reasonable prices.
  3. Via Sydney. If the second option also turns out to be very expensive for you, then fly to Sydney, and from there on flights of the Australian low-cost airline JetStar (http://www.jetstar.com/) to Auckland. By the way, JetStar is a good opportunity to travel cheaply within Australia itself and between Australia and New Zealand.

Transit through New Zealand and Australia

Australia and New Zealand are countries where CIS citizens need a visa in any case, even if you do not plan to leave the airport during connecting flights. There is one caveat. Let's say you're flying to New Zealand on Emirates Airlines with one transfer in Dubai. Such a flight lasts 16 hours and in fact during this time the plane makes a refueling landing in Sydney. Even in this case, you need a visa to Australia. In general, when you see that a flight lasts more than 12 hours, then go to the website of the carrier airline and see if there are any refueling stops.

A transit visa to Australia is obtained free of charge and remotely, and it is also electronic. The main thing is to take care of this 3 weeks before departure. As for New Zealand, you do not need a visa here only if you have a regular tourist visa to Australia. The New Zealand transit visa requires a fee and is affixed to your passport.

Read about the specifics of visa processing on the websites of their embassies in your country:

  • for Ukraine: http://www.oceania.com.ua/, http://embassy.net.ua/;
  • for Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus: http://www.nzembassy.com/, http://www.russia.embassy.gov.au/.

For a transit visa, you only need tickets and a visa to the final country.

Car rental in Australia and New Zealand

In general, the countries in question are very expensive. You shouldn't rely on cheap accommodation, transport or food here. For example, traveling from Sydney Airport to the city center by train costs about $20. The cheapest way to travel around these countries is to rent a car. This service costs approximately $25 per day. If you are traveling with 2-4 people, then this turns out to be very profitable.

If you are flying to one city, then a car is not very important - parking is paid everywhere, but if you want to travel around the country, then don’t even think about it - take it. Australia and New Zealand need international rights. Read about how to formalize them in the material “International rights: a necessity or a waste of money.” The car rental system is similar to the European one - a separate series of articles is devoted to this topic.

Train travel in Australia and New Zealand

Traveling by rail is an expensive form of travel, but it is more comfortable. Trains in Australia are very comfortable and sometimes even resemble a small hotel room.

When you travel by train across the country, you will be greeted with stunning views that will leave a lasting impression. Australian Railways website - http://passes.railaustralia.com.au/. In total, there are 4 trains in the country with very good service:
