Dombay is a land of untouched nature, snow-capped mountains and forests. Athletes and walkers flock here. The Dombay Valley, where the resort village is located, is surrounded by mountain ranges. On the southern side it is the Main Caucasian Range, on the eastern side - the Dombay-Ulgen gorge, on the northern side - the Amanauz gorge and the Alibek gorge on the western side.

It occupies an area of 85 thousand hectares on the northern slope of the Caucasus Range. The Dombay Valley, where vacationers stay, is the southern part of the Teberda Nature Reserve.

There are many beautiful places on the territory of the reserve that are worth visiting in your free time. These are mysterious gorges, observation platforms, snowy peaks, glaciers and lakes. There are about 150 lakes in the reserve, and the famous one is Lake Klukhorskoye. It is located at an altitude of 2676 m above sea level and is covered with ice almost all year round.

And the main river of the reserve, Teberda, is associated with legends and stories. According to one of them, the name means “God’s gift.”

Amanauz Gorge

Translated from Karachay, “Aman” means evil, and “auz” means mouth. This is what the ancient inhabitants of the Dombay valley called it. The fact is that the Amanauz River flows through the entire gorge. The water crashing against the rocks makes a loud roar. It was believed that this was an evil spirit and the residents did not dare to go to the gorge.

The passage through the gorge is quite narrow and is surrounded by the peaks of the Belalakaya Mountains and Theater Peak. Even in summer, light barely penetrates here, and there are snow islands on rivers and slopes.

A walk along the gorge starts from the resort village of Dombay, goes along the river and ends on a cliff. From the cliff there is a view of the stormy Amanauz River, which makes its way into a narrow gorge.

Each attraction in Dombay is unique. But it is worth highlighting the Murudzhinsky lakes in the valley of the Ullu-Murudzhu River at an altitude of 3000 m. The lakes include 15 reservoirs, but tourists tend to see only two. You can only get to the lakes on foot, but it is better to resort to the help of a guide and allocate two days for the walk with an overnight stay.

Blue Murudzhinskoye Lake differs from other lakes in its size. The diameter is 500 m, and the depth is about 52 m. It is called blue due to the color of the water.

From the Blue Lake a hiking trail leads to the Black Lake. But the water in the lake is not black, but rather dark green. In the vicinity of the lakes, tourists will enjoy amazing landscapes and encounters with wild mountain goats.

Sentinsky Temple

This is a Christian temple, which is located on the territory of the village of Nizhnyaya Teberda. Although the temple dates back to 965, it is in relatively good condition. Inside the building you can see the remains of a fresco, and a stone mausoleum was built next to it.

The temple is considered one of the oldest buildings in Alanya.

Or Baduki in simple speech. They are a cascade of three lakes on the Baduk River. You can get to the lakes in 3 hours, so the trip to them will take one day without an overnight stay. It’s worth visiting the Baduk Lakes in the fall. Around the lakes there are pine and birch thickets, which fill with colors in autumn.

The first lake in the cascade is small. The water does not warm up above 5⁰C. There is a path along the left bank of the river to the second lake. A gazebo for relaxation and picnic was built next to the lake. You can get to the third lake in two ways. The third lake is the largest of the cascade and is located at an altitude of 1990 m above sea level.

Alibek glacier and waterfall

One of the most popular and must-visit places. The glacier viewpoint is easily accessible, and along the way there are many trails to other attractions.

The route to Alibek starts from the camp site of the same name along a forest path. The trail will lead to the Uzun-Tala clearing, from which you will have a view of the glacier and the snowy tops of the mountains. Even on a hot summer day, the glacier is covered with a layer of ice and snow, just like in winter. The Alibek glacier is not the only one in the vicinity of Dombay, but it is the largest. Unfortunately, over the years, the area of the glacier has been decreasing, but it never ceases to amaze tourists with its power and contrast to the green forests and meadows.

Returning from the glacier back, you will meet a sign to the Alibek waterfall. The path to it is easy and will take no more than half an hour. The waterfall is 25 meters high and falls from smooth stones called “ram’s foreheads”. Alibek waterfall is powerful and loud, the splashes from it reach tourists a couple of kilometers from the waterfall.

Chuchkhur waterfall

This waterfall was formed from the Chuchkhur River. It descends from the Chuchkhur gorge to the Dombay-Ulgen gorge. The waterfall has three cascades that are easily accessible. The path starts from the village from the Crocus department. First you will pass Leah's glade, and then Russian glade. It will offer the first view of the waterfall. After the Russian Glade the trail will branch. Turning right leads to the gorge, and turning left leads to the Chuchkhur waterfall. The road to the waterfall will lie through alpine and subalpine meadows. Along the way you will encounter stone blocks higher than 5 meters, which were brought to the meadows by descending glaciers thousands of years ago.

The waterfall consists of three cascades. First, the trail leads to the middle cascade, from it you can climb to the upper one, but the trail there is more difficult and it’s not worth going in rainy weather. From the upper cascade there is a panoramic view of the Dombay-Ulgen peak (4046 m).

Another local attraction that is worth visiting during your holiday in Dombay. It is better to combine a walk to the Devil's Mill with a walk to the Amanauz gorge. There are signs to the waterfall. The main thing is not to get lost with it and not to go beyond the signs indicating the border zone.

During the hike to the Devil's Mill you will come across many small waterfalls and streams. These are all the results of melting glaciers. The waterfall itself passes through a narrow crevice in the shape of the letter S. The water falls along a steep inclined surface, forming a mill of jets. Near the Devil's Mill there is a small observation deck on a steep cliff. Therefore, you should be extremely careful while walking.

The peak of Dombay-Ulgen captivates the attention of tourists at any time of the year. In summer, the icy tops bathe in the rays of the bright sun; in winter, the reflections of sunset can be seen on the snow cover. And in autumn, when the entire forest becomes colorful, the mountain looks even brighter and more contrasting. All year round the tops of the mountains are shrouded in snow and ice. The rapid Teberda River originates from the Ulgen glaciers and descends to the village.

You can look at Mount Dombay-Ulgen from anywhere in the village. This mountain is the highest in the Western Caucasus. The mountain consists of three peaks with heights: 4046 m, 4036 m and 3950 m. A ridge extends from the main and high peak, which is popularly called the “Dombay saddle”.

The lake is located not far between the Alibek and Bilingual glacier. If the hike to it is combined with a walk to the waterfall, you will have to return to the Alibek camp site and follow the signs to the lake. The trail will not be difficult, but in some places you will have to cross mountain rivers on bridges and walk along kurumniks. Kurumnik is a mound of stones, fragments of rocks and rocks.

Turje Lake is of glacial origin. The water there is bright blue and until mid-summer is covered with a layer of ice. Only the bravest travelers dare to swim in Lake Turye. Mountain goats, called aurochs, are often found near the lake. It was they who gave the name to this lake.

What else to see in Dombay

Dombay resort

Mountain Dombay lies in Karachay-Cherkessia in the Kuban basin in the North Caucasus of Russia and is a popular ski resort, because it is from here in a straight line that it is 65 kilometers to the top of Elbrus and the same amount to the Black Sea coast.

The highest point of the resort is Mount Dombay-Ulgen with a height of 4046 meters. The connection of the main gorges Alibek, Amanauz and Dombay-Ulgen form the Dombay glade, which lies at an altitude of 1650 meters above sea level.

The word “Dombay” is translated as “bison,” which suggests that these animals were once found in the Dombay forests.

Today, a tourist complex of several dozen hotels operates on Dombayskaya Polyana. The ski area is located at an altitude of 1800 - 3200 meters, the total length of the slopes exceeds 20 kilometers. In summer, Dombay is no less interesting: cycling and walking, as well as swimming in warm healing lakes, are popular at this time.

Alibek Dombay glacier

One of the most beautiful and second largest glacier in Dombay is the Alibek glacier. It is located at a distance of 9 km from the Dombay glade. A huge icefall descends from a rocky mountain ridge, giving the impression of a huge, instantly frozen mountain river. This glacial perfection is framed by green forest cover and imposing cliffs.

Lost among the Dombay Mountains of the Caucasus Range is the wide valley of Bu-Ulgen, which in translation sounds like “killed deer.” It is surrounded on all sides by mountain slopes, which are closed by the Dombay-Ulgen rocks. It is truly the most cumbersome in the entire Western Caucasus.

The valley is famous for its picturesque flora, characteristic mixed forest, subalpine vegetation and mountain meadows, which local residents use for haymaking.

You can get to the Bu-Ulgen valley through the Chuchkhur mountain pass, which is not only a good observation point, but also connects the valley with the gorge of the same name.

The lowest areas of the valley, even in mid-summer, are filled with snow from winter avalanches descending from the Bu Ulgen glacier, the peak of which is located 3900 meters above sea level.

Location

You can see all the sights of Dombay by visiting this wonderful resort, located in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic in the valley of the Teberda Nature Reserve. The total altitude is 1600 meters above sea level. A massive influx of tourists began in early 1925. And by 1960, a government order approved the construction of a sports and tourist complex on this territory.

The village is 230 km away from the Mineralnye Vody airport. You can get from the airport terminal by bus or taxi. You can also get there by train, for example, to Pyatigorsk or Nalchik. There is also a bus from the railway station to Dombay. Every tourist can arrive here by personal car. The resort has a developed infrastructure: hotels, cafes, campsites, parking lots, prepared ski slopes and lifts.

Sights of Dombay in summer

Despite the fact that most guidebooks position Dombay as a ski resort, you can visit it not only in winter, but also in summer. During this period of time there is no sweltering heat and the weather is fine, which makes long walking excursions possible. Centuries-old fir forests, crystal clear lakes, snowy mountain peaks - all this can be seen when visiting the resort in summer or autumn.

The most popular are horseback riding and cycling. As well as trekking and climbing along various mountain trails. Sunny weather combined with a mild climate and beautiful scenery makes this mountain resort very popular.

Teberda Nature Reserve

This reserve is part of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, namely the Karachay district. It is located on the territory of the basin, which is a tributary of the Kuban. The area of the reserve is 69,535 hectares. and Dombaya are the most popular and visited by tourists. It is here that a huge number of natural monuments are located. Each of them amazes with its pristine beauty. The cleanest rivers Teberda and Gonachkhir, clear lakes impress even experienced travelers. Here you can see glaciers, stunning in their power and volume: Ptyshsky, Amanauzsky, Alibeksky.

At the top of Mount Mussa-Achitara there is an observation deck from which an amazing view of the surrounding landscape opens. In clear weather, the peak of the majestic Elbrus is clearly visible from this place. A peculiar object of Dombay is a hotel made in the shape of an alien ship (“plate”).

Mussa-Achitara Ridge

Considering the various attractions of Dombay, one cannot help but say something about this place. Translated, the name of the ridge means “Moussa’s cry.” This is connected with an interesting legend. Once a thief named Moussa stole a flock of sheep and took them up the mountain along a gentle slope. Having climbed up, he sat down to rest and began to count the livestock, estimating in his mind the amount of his own income. But then he discovered that on the other side the mountain was steep and rocky. Then he realized that he had no way forward or back. And he cried bitterly.

Today, from the observation deck of the ridge there is a view of the glaciers and peaks of Elbrus, the valleys of Teberda and Gonachkhir.

Turje Lake

The reservoir is located between two glaciers: Alibek and Bilingual. The height of its location is 3 thousand meters. The lake is surrounded on all sides by greenery and flowers. Until mid-summer, the lake's waters are frozen in ice, and in summer they have an unusual color. A snowfield descends to the very surface of the water, above which there is a glacier. All this forms streams at the foot of which flow.

Amanauz Gorge

There are many places worth visiting Dombay. The attractions located in the immediate vicinity of the village amaze with their natural beauty. The gorge is known for its steep walls, canyons and waterfalls. The Amanauz River is the source of Teberda, the name translated means “evil mouth”. This gorge is considered the narrowest in Dombay. It offers picturesque views of the surrounding peaks. Another attraction known as the “Devil’s Mill” is also located here.

Murudzhinsky lakes

The reservoirs are located 1.5 kilometers from the Ullu-Muruju River. There are two largest and most famous lakes here: Black and Goluboe.

The largest of the lakes is Goluboe. Its area is about 12 hectares, its depth is more than 50 meters, and the distance between the banks is more than 500 meters. The Muruju River flows out of the lake. The waters of this lake contain silver and are the purest. Black Lake lives up to its name. A bridge between the rocks blocks it from sunlight, making the water appear black.

Shumka Waterfall

If you don’t want to ski in winter, you should visit Dombay in summer. Relaxation and sightseeing in natural reserves in the warm season can be an excellent alternative to winter skiing. An interesting place to visit is the waterfall formed by the waters of the river of the same name. The height of the waterfall is 12 meters. It is located at an altitude of 1523 meters. The gorge through which the river flows is wild, so the waters are unusually clean and transparent. The second name of the waterfall is Ak-Suu, which means “White Water”.

Baduk Lakes

When talking about the sights of Dombay, we should not forget about these. They are located along the Baduk River and a tributary of Khadzhibey. There are avalanches in this area until mid-summer. Sometimes some of them descend directly into the lakes. Between two lakes (the first and second) the river flows underground. The first lake is located at 1.9 km. The second and third are even higher. In the third lake, in good summer weather, the water warms up to +10 degrees.

Lift system

You can view all the sights of Dombay using the system. This is especially true for those who go there for the purpose of skiing and snowboarding.

The ski resort is served by a lift system. In total, it includes five lines of the cable car (in some places a chairlift). The fourth and fifth stages deliver to the main ski area. They lead to the “Mussa” clearing at an altitude of 2500 meters. A cable car takes tourists to the crest of the ridge.

The pendulum road carries out lifting with the help of a trailer with a capacity of up to 40 people. It rises to a height of 2260 meters.

The new lift system includes a six- and four-seater chairlift. It takes tourists to an altitude of 3200 meters.

There are also towing roads on all training slopes.

Of course, this is not all that can be seen in this amazing corner of the Caucasus. When thinking about where to go on your next vacation, you should pay attention to Dombay. Sights, photos of which will be taken from the heights of the mountains, will remain in the memory for a long time. Dombay is located in the middle between the Black Sea coast and Elbrus. In both directions in a straight line about 65 kilometers. Perhaps this influenced the fact that Dombay is especially beautiful in summer. For three weeks I waited for a clear sunny day, so that the trip to the mountains would not be overshadowed by fog and that all the peaks with which the Dombay meadow is rich would be open. I was able to see the Dombay mountains in all their glory!

At 9 am we crossed the border of the Teberdinsky reserve. After 20 minutes we reached the village of Dombay from where we were to climb. From here from the village there is a stunning view of the beautiful BelalaKaya (3861m) - one of my favorite photos))

Amanauz - a river in Dombay

To get to the cable car, you need to cross the bridge. Here, through the rows of coniferous giants, the Amanauz River flows its waters.

Amanauz is a real mountain river. This turbulent molasses is the source of the Teberda River. By the way, in translation Amanauz means “evil mouth.”

From the other side of the bridge there is a stunning view of Sofrudzha (3781m) and the Crystal Hotel in the village of Dombay.

Dombay cable cars

There is a developed multi-level cable car system in Dombay; we used the one that was called new. The network of cable cars in Dombay allows you to climb to the top of Mount Mussa-Achitara. In summer, the old and new lines of the cable car operate. Looking ahead, it should be clarified that the system is 4-level, i.e. with two transfers. Upon arrival in Dombay, we found ourselves at an altitude of 1590 meters, from here we had to climb Mount Mussa-Achitara, about 3163 meters high. On weekends in the summer, Dombay is visited by a very large number of tourists and excursions. Getting to the ski lift as a wild person in the morning is problematic.

Our ascent to the second level took place in a trailer that can be described as made in some kind of Swiss-futuristic style, in comparison with the familiar trailers of the Soviet period.

However, now, such booths can be seen in many places. They run in and out.

Climbing to the top of Dombay

It wasn’t even 10 o’clock in the morning when I was already on the second level - altitude 2277 above sea level.

From here, in the rays of the rising sun, the entire village of Dombay and the Alibek gorge are clearly visible, with views of Ertsog (3683m) and Dzhalovchat (3884m).

The Ine peak and the Dzhuguturluchat massif (3921m) are clearly visible - translated as “mountain above the Tur gorge”.

Here we spend no more than 10 minutes and continue the ascent further on open 6-seater seats. At the same time, we cross the old lifts from the top, also open, but of a 2-seater type.

A few minutes and we are on the third level. This level is the most equipped, with various cafes and antennas located here.

The most interesting of the cafes - “3012” (apparently due to the height of the location) has the appearance of a stylized fortress of the Caucasian peoples.

On the way back, I dined here on trout for 200 rubles; I couldn’t deny myself a little pleasure on such a beautiful day.

After lunch, I wandered around for some time, took a few photographs, some of which for some reason very much remind me of Central Asia - Afghanistan-Pakistan, although I have never been there)))

Here the mountains move away, they become not so close, but now their entire huge massif appears before the eye - the Dombay meadow. From here you can clearly see the killed bison hiding in the Dombay-Ulgen gorge - the highest of the mountains of the western Caucasus - 4046 meters and its entire gorge. By the way, the word “dombai” itself translated from the Karachay language means “bison”. Once upon a time, whole herds of these animals lived here.

By the way, from the third level there is a stunning view of the entire Teberda gorge, which is where we came from.

We had 3 hours of time - so much and so little to enjoy this beauty, plus we spent another hour on the descent.

But the climb is not over; further up, to the very top of Mussa-Achitara, another cable car leads. As of the time I was there, the road had not yet been put into operation. They built it, but according to the old Russian tradition, it refused to work and no one could understand why. In general, they were waiting for specialists, apparently from Switzerland, where this miracle of technology was produced.

Well, this is not even the wilds of Mount Beshtau and not even Zhelezka, I thought and decided that I would climb, no matter what!!

The climb came quite quickly. 10-15 minutes and I was already standing on the top of Mussa-Achitara, the main mountain of Dombay. The height was already 3 kilometers. From here the entire valley of the Dombay Mountains opened up - the Dombay Glade.

Dombay Glade is a place in the upper reaches of the Teberda River, uniting several mountain gorges. The connection of the Dombay-Ulgen, Amanauz, Alibek and Gonachkhir gorges forms a circus, the mountainous territory of which is united under the name Dombay Glade or simply Dombay.

Teberda Gorge

You take a few steps and the Teberda begins in front of your feet at the confluence of the Amanauz and Gonachkhir rivers.

The gorge is crowned with the snow-white cap of Elbrus.

Peak Mussa-Achitara

Here, at the top, from where you can see all the mountains of Dombay, I spent almost an hour. I hung out in a chair on a non-working cable car, ate lunch on a backfill, practically dangling my legs from a cliff at an altitude of more than 3 kilometers, burned in the bright mountain sun and received incredible pleasure from the unforgettable views that the Dombay meadow gives.

By the way, Mussa-Achitara is also known as Musat-Cheri.

The Dombay glade contains an innumerable number of mountains, massifs and peaks. I tried to highlight at least the main, most pronounced peaks.

Descending from the top was more difficult, since my path down ran through the remnants of the snow cap, and the remaining snow looked more like highly crushed melted ice. Sneakers are absolutely not suitable footwear for crossing such a tongue of snow, even ten meters wide.

Those who visit Dombay in the summer, at the top at the foot of the glacier, can see Biberstein's bells growing.

Snow lies on the peaks all year round, as if bordering Dombay. In summer, glaciers melt, and from Mussa-Achitara there is an excellent view of the Dzhuguturluchatsky waterfall. He is certainly not the only one. Dombay is rich in waterfalls in summer, but not all of them are easily accessible.

After lunch at the cafe, I went down in splendid isolation. There wasn’t even a hint of excitement, akin to the one during the rise. Below are a few photos taken during the descent.

I spent almost another half hour on the second level. I never managed to find one of the symbols of Dombay - a hotel in the shape of a flying saucer. But my search ended successfully. The “Flying Saucer” was presented to Dombay by the President of Finland, Urho Kekkonen. The opening took place in 1979. The hotel accommodates up to 8 people.

10 minutes after the descent, we left summer Dombay and headed back to the side. Along the way we made a stop at, but more on that later.

How to get to Dombay

Dombay Glade is a mountainous area in the Caucasus. There is no airport or railway here. Nevertheless, getting to Dombay is not difficult. By the way, entry into the territory of the Teberda Nature Reserve is paid.

How to get to Dombay from Moscow

The fastest way to get to Dombay from Moscow is by plane. The nearest airport to Dombay is in the city of Mineralnye Vody. About a dozen flights from different airlines fly from Moscow to Mineralnye Vody every day at any time of the day. The flight time will be 2 hours.

How to get from Mineralnye Vody to Dombay

Dombay is a little more than 200 kilometers from Mineralnye Vody. If you go by your own transport, then there are 2 roads, through Cherkessk or through. The road through the pass is more picturesque if you are not afraid of mountain serpentines.

As an option, you can rent a car, spend the night in Dombay, and the next day visit Arkhyz, adjacent to the Dombay meadow. You can even go to Elbrus or to. In addition to Dombay, in the summer there are a lot of places in the Caucasus that you can visit on your own. You can rent a car at affordable prices on the website.

You can get to Dombay by train, via Nevinnomyssk. From Nevinnomyssk, and Cherkessk, Pyatigorsk and Mineralnye Vody you can get to Dombay by bus from the bus station. On the downside, the bus goes to Teberda, you need to change trains there. You can view flights and purchase tickets.

As I already wrote, you won’t be able to get to Dombay by train. By train, you can first get to Mineralnye Vody, or even better, to Nevinnomysskaya station. From Nevinnomyssk you can take a train to the nearest railway station to Dombayskaya Polyana in the city of Cherkessk.

Dombay or Elbrus? Where is the best place to go?

To choose where it is better to go to Dombay or Elbrus, first of all you need to understand why? I’ll say right away that if possible, it’s better to go both ways. The only things better than mountains are mountains. If this is not possible, let's consider several options to choose Elbrus or Dombay.

If we talk about alpine skiing, then Dombayskaya Polyana is more compact, getting to the slopes is more convenient, but the slopes themselves are inferior to Elbrus. However, we won’t dwell on winter vacations, since the article is about Dombay in the summer.

If this is your first time in the Caucasus and you can only spend 1 day on the trip, then feel free to choose the direction that is closer to you in distance. If the distance is approximately the same, then I would recommend choosing Elbrus. Still, this is not only the highest mountain in Europe, but also the highest mountain in Russia. Elbrus is not for nothing considered the pearl of the Caucasus. You can take a cable car to the glacier itself, and there, if desired and in good weather, you can take a snowmobile to shelter 11. The mountains are a little more picturesque and closer than in the Elbrus region.
