Abu Dhabi Airport. Instructions for use. Our reviews of Etihad Airways. Long layover in Abu Dhabi Long layover in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi International Airport is considered one of the most important airports in the UAE and is the home base for Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, founded in 2003. Several dozen airlines from around the world offer flights to this airport.
Abu Dhabi International Airport is located approximately 26 km east of the city center. The ICAO airport code is OMAA, the IATA code is AUH (we will often use this designation in the future). The airport, opened in 1982, is connected to the city by highway. In order to get to some place in the city from the airport or vice versa, it is recommended to use a taxi.
Today the airport covers a total area of 2,400 hectares, and currently has 3 terminals. It has 2 runways: 13R/31L with 4100 m × 45 m asphalt and 13L/31R with 4100 m × 60 m asphalt.
A total of three streets lead from the airport to the Abu Dhabi urban area: Al Khalej Al Arabi (Highway 30), Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum (Highway 2) and Al Salam Street (Highway 8). Not far from the airport there is the E10 highway leading to Dubai. The airport is not connected to central Abu Dhabi by rail, but there are buses, taxis and a variety of private minibuses available in the city centre.

Abu Dhabi airport map

We have only presented a diagram of Terminal 3 at this airport, since only Ethihad planes fly from Russia to Abu Dhabi, and this airline uses this terminal.

History of the airport

In 1982, it was decided to close the old airport for passenger traffic, which was located near Abu Dhabi, and use it only for military purposes. Thus, the construction of a new large airport was required. It was planned and implemented by JOANNOU & PARASKEVAIDES Limited, a Guernsey-based construction services company that has specialized in construction projects in the Middle East since the 1960s and has previously built airports in Muscat and Amman.
In 1982, Abu Dhabi International Airport opened and Terminal 1 became operational. Terminal 2 was opened in 2005, and in the fall of 2008, a second runway appeared 2 km north of the first runway. In the winter of 2009, Terminal 3 was put into operation, which handles Etihad Airways flights. A new terminal is due to open in the near future, which will significantly increase passenger traffic at the airport.

Abu Dhabi Airport Terminal 3

The second largest airport in the UAE is dominated by Etihad Airways, but also serves a total of 53 airlines flying to 85 destinations. It currently has three terminals, with Terminal 3 used exclusively by Etihad. In order to get from this terminal to another, you need to take a 15-minute walk along a special passage.
Terminal 3 has a dedicated section for all business and first class passengers and Etihad Guest Gold members. This is one of the best areas in the entire airport. Porters will arrive at your vehicle, load your luggage onto a cart, and deliver it to the check-in agent. There are chairs near the agent desk so you can sit while they check you in for your flight. You are then sent to a dedicated security check queue. It usually takes about 5 minutes to go through all the formalities and enter the duty-free shopping area.

Shops, restaurants and cafes

It's no surprise that AUH gives you plenty of options to spend your money. For example, Burberry, Ferragamo and Bulgari stores can be found in terminals 1 and 3; Coach, Hermes and Hugo Boss are in Terminal 3; and Givenchy is in Terminal 1. You'll also find the famous Boots pharmacy in Terminal 3 and a gift shop at The Souk on the upper level of Terminal 1.
Of course, there are also shops here that sell alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, perfumes and other products familiar to duty-free shops.

AUH doesn't have as many restaurants as Dubai Airport, but if you get hungry you can still look forward to a wide variety of places to eat. In Terminal 1, you can visit Culto Café or order a sandwich and espresso from Illy Espressamente in the arrivals hall. If you have time for a full meal, you can visit Skypark Plaza. In Terminal 3 you can try different breads from all over the Middle East and different sandwiches at Panopolis.

Etihad Lounges

Etihad's renowned Pearl and Diamond lounges in Terminal 3 have been closed for renovations and their opening date has already been postponed several times. When they eventually reopen, they are expected to become a dedicated seat for passengers flying on Etihad's new A380 aircraft.

Until the redesigned lounges open, premium travelers must head to Terminal 1 to use the Pearl and Diamond combo lounge. It is equipped with the standard amenities, including a large hot and cold buffet, bar and charging stations. It's also one of the few transit lounges that offers complimentary Six Senses massages. Even though it's only 15 minutes long, it's fantastic. Please note that if you are an Etihad Gold member flying in Economy Class, you will not have access to this lounge. In this case, you will have to use the Al Reem Lounge, located between Terminals 1 and 3.

How to get to the city

Public buses can take you from AUH to the main bus station in Abu Dhabi within 45 minutes. The cost of the trip will be 4 dirhams. The air-conditioned A1 bus is an easy and extremely economical way to get to the center of Abu Dhabi. It runs every 40 minutes 24 hours a day in each direction. Green and white buses stop at each terminal.
Taking a taxi to the city center is also an easy process. From Terminals 1 and 3 you can get into a six-seater Mercedes Vito, and outside Terminal 2 you can get into a Toyota Camry. The cost of the trip starts from 25 AED (this is the cost of landing at Abu Dhabi airport).
Etihad Diamond and Pearl travelers have access to Etihad's Premium Chauffeur service. Your driver, with your name on a poster, will meet you at the gate and take you in a luxury vehicle anywhere in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Transit area at Abu Dhabi airport

I was lucky enough to fly several times with transfers at the airports of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. In my opinion, the best airport for transit is Abu Dhabi Airport. True, this means a long connection, since with a short connection it is difficult to appreciate all the advantages of airport transit areas.

The transit areas at Abu Dhabi Airport are quite good no matter which terminal they are in. In addition to the huge number of duty free shops, they have a couple of excellent lounges, the Dhabi Lounge and the Al Reem Lounge, which offer a cozy environment and delicious food (all included in the admission price). Al Reem Lounge in Terminal 1 costs AED 250 for 5 hours.
Since I flew from Moscow via Abu Dhabi on Ethihad planes, I always spent time in the transit area of Terminal 3. Unlike Emirates’ “native” terminal at Dubai Airport, this terminal is always clean and relatively few people. I almost always found a seat in a quiet part of the airport. This transit area has some really nice massage chairs and sleep cocoons scattered throughout the transit area. Plus, you can get a good view of the runway, something you don't get at Dubai Airport.

What to see in Abu Dhabi during transit

After the abolition of visas for Russians for short trips to the UAE, transit travelers were able to freely leave the airport and go explore the city. Previously, this required obtaining a transit visa, which was expensive.
What to see in Abu Dhabi if you have a lot of time between flights? Head to Abu Dhabi's most iconic monuments. The first of these is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. You don't have to be Muslim to visit as it is open from 9am to 10pm, except on Friday afternoons. The mosque has the world's largest carpet and one of the world's largest chandeliers. Remember that you must be dressed appropriately to visit the mosque.
Abu Dhabi is also home to the Emirates Palace, a luxury hotel considered the most expensive in the world. True, this is not known for sure, since the royal family refused to disclose the actual costs of building this hotel. Here you can walk through the atrium and see beautiful paintings. The hotel's beach is one of the best in the whole UAE, with about a kilometer of soft, well-maintained white sand.
If you are a meat lover, we recommend visiting Chamas Churrascaria & Bar inside the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. This Brazilian restaurant is open for dinner only and operates on an all-you-can-eat basis. This is a true meat-eater's paradise, offering 16 different types of grilled and skewed meats. Dinner costs about $36 per person, but drinks are an additional cost.
Abu Dhabi also has an amusement park and a water park, but you need to think carefully about visiting these places during transit, if only because you will have all the money and documents with you.

Sequence of actions when transferring to Abu Dhabi

I remember before my first flight with a transfer in another country I was very worried. Then I was afraid of getting lost or going the wrong way. Therefore, I understand well people who ask about the sequence of actions during a transplant. In fact, if you're flying with a connecting flight with Ethihad, you don't have to worry at all. It's a little more complicated if you fly to Abu Dhabi on an Ethihad airline, and from Abu Dhabi to another location fly on a different airline. But this rarely happens - most tourists from Russia buy a single ticket from Ethihad.

What are the transfer procedures when flying with Ethihad? You just need to get off the plane and follow the signs for Transfer. Don't be afraid that you will get lost. All arriving passengers have only two ways: to the transit area or to the exit from the airport. Those leaving must go through passport control. If you get to passport control, then you just need to go back and take another road.

Free food

If the long layover is more than 3 hours, then feel free to go to the airline counter, most likely it is Etihad, and ask for coupons for free food (can i get a meal coupons?). Show them your tickets for the next flight. If the layover is very long, you may be given several coupons for dinner, breakfast or lunch. You can use coupons in terminals 1 and 3 on the second floor at any food court establishment. You show the coupons and they tell you what you can take with these coupons. We liked Bricco pizza&pasta. There, for one coupon you will be given a very good portion of pizza, pasta or hot food, a small fruit plate and a cold drink.

Sleep

you can either in sleeping cabins at a price of $45 for 4 hours per person, or in the only airport hotel (it is better to book in advance on booking or the official website of the hotel) at a price of $130 per room for 6 hours, it is located according to the signs in front of the entrance to terminal 1. You can also sleep for free in any convenient place at the airport. We found the quietest and most comfortable place to sleep in the passage between terminals 1 and 3, opposite Costa coffee there is an inconspicuous staircase to the top, there is a quiet small waiting room with comfortable places to sleep. There is also an Etihad counter where you can ask for a blanket. Please note that there are strong air conditioners at the airport and if there are no blankets, it can be cold, so we recommend always dressing warmly if you are flying with a transfer in the Emirates. Multiple reviews confirm our caution.

Pass the time

Free Wi-Fi, phone charging, showers, a library of books in English, quite a lot of sockets around the airport, as well as standard duty free shops - in general, the airport is excellent and comfortable with good navigation.

Is it possible to go into the city, do I need a visa?

Even if you want to go out for 5 minutes, you still need a visa, which costs about $100, and it is better to apply for it in advance through the airline, or at the visa centers in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Issued for a period of 30 days. No one will let you out of the airport without a visa.

To travel to Abu Dhabi in 2019, residents of the Russian Federation need a visa. In the article we will find out when a visa to Abu Dhabi is needed for Russians, how much it costs, where to get it, and what types of permits are available.

Since February 2017, it is not necessary to obtain a visa to the UAE in advance if the trip lasts no more than 30 days. In this case, a free visa on arrival is issued. To get an entry stamp at the airport, you only need to present a passport with a validity of at least 6 months at passport control. No fees or additional documents are required. But if a tourist wants to extend his stay in the country, then this can only be done once, paying $760.

Where do they get it?

If a longer stay is necessary, the right to visit Abu Dhabi is issued by the migration authorities; there is no need to contact the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Moscow. The following can help in obtaining a permit in Abu Dhabi:

Transit

Border stamp sample

With the introduction of a free visa on arrival in 2017, there is no need to apply for a special visa for short-term transit through the UAE. You can go into the city or simply leave the transit zone of the airport, as in the case of a trip for up to 30 days, by putting a free stamp at the control.

On the way back, the tourist receives the same stamp to enter the country.

Traveling with a child

Traveling with a child has several features:

  1. A child will not be issued a visa upon arrival if he is included in the passport of one of the parents. The child must have his own separate passport.
  2. If a child travels without parents, a notarized permission to travel abroad is issued.

Period for issuing a permit

The processing time for your application depends on the season. If the trip is planned during the peak season, it may take up to 6 working days to review the application. Summer months are low season. There are fewer applications, papers are processed in 1-2 business days.

Price

The price for entry rights depends on the duration of the trip:

Visa centers charge an additional fee for the “urgent processing” service.

Should know

A woman under 30 years of age who wishes to visit Abu Dhabi is granted an entry permit if she is accompanied by a male relative who has reached the age of majority or if she has permission from both parents. The permit is translated into English and certified.

The presence of a stamp in your passport indicating that you have crossed the border with Israel or a visa to this country is not an obstacle to obtaining the right to enter the country.

When traveling with pets, they are provided with a veterinary passport. The document must be of an international standard, indicating that the animal is healthy. Passports are also required when transporting birds.

This article is all about Abu Dhabi transit: about the airport, food, including free food at the airport, free Internet, places to sleep and relax, flights from Etihad, innovations for July 2013.

On July 8, Russians celebrated the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, and Orthodox Christians on this day remember the patrons of marriage, Peter and Fevronia of Murom. Well, apparently the Lord reunited my family on this very day - my wife and daughter came to visit my son and me. Now the four of us are planning, after their short acclimatization, to hit the road in Southeast Asia and work together on this site.

My girls, like my son and I, were on a transit flight. The transit flight through Moscow Domodedovo and Abu Dhabi by Etihad was interesting. Here I present the girls’ filmed report on transit in Abu Dhabi.

The e-ticket indicates 3 flights: to Moscow, then to Abu Dhabi and from there to Bangkok. All three are from Etihad. However, on the first plane there were passengers from 4 airlines at once on an S7 plane, so there was a slight disappointment in the service. The plane was delayed first for half an hour, then for the same amount. Our fellow travelers, whose transfer was 1-1.5 hours, were nervous, but we had to spend 5 hours in Domodedovo - we were glad to spend more time in our Koltsovo - the best airport in the country in 2013, such a prize was awarded to the airport on May 17, 2013 at the III International Forum “Development of Airports in Russia and the CIS”. At Koltsovo airport we have good and fairly cheap duty, free and easily accessible wi-fi, sockets everywhere.

We successfully checked in for all three flights at once. So, boarding passes for all flights are in hand, luggage has been sent to the final destination - off you go!

Domodedovo was surprised by the crowd, although we expected this, but we did not expect watching films in the waiting room for 1000 rubles per film. Apparently, the Mother See has its own views on entertainment.

In such a double cabin they charge 300 rubles for 1 seat, 1000 rubles for two people - films of your choice. Of the 8 booths, 3 had visitors.

We recorded a couple of movies on our laptop in case we got tired of working on the Internet and took headphones with us - we prefer not to depend on anyone’s taste and not to overpay.

Duty Domodedovo is of course larger than in Koltsovo, but more expensive. For some reason, in duty they demanded dollars, in Koltsovo they accept rubles, dollars, and euros without any problems. As far as I remember, Domodedovo is still Russia, and on the territory of this state rubles are required to be accepted.

We fly from Domodedovo to Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways. Back on the plane, several flights from different airlines. Airplane from Jet Air.
Here it is, finally an Arabic service. Comfortable chairs with lateral support, Individual screens with a large selection of entertainment, a menu like in a restaurant.

Individual screens with convenient remote controls and headphones. You can even play Scrabble - the remote has a keyboard on the back side.

The multifunctional backrest of the chair also has a socket for charging our devices (with a green indicator).

5 hours from Moscow to Abu Dhabi flew by unnoticed. Juices and waters, Chilean wines, canned beer, carefully mixed whiskey and cola by the stewards. Interesting lunch. True, the beef steak turned out to be just a steak). But still delicious. For an afternoon snack, popcorn and movies. We descended masterfully over this most beautiful city illuminated at night. Passengers were transported from the plane to the Abu Dhabi airport building by bus. We only had to walk 5 meters to the airport building, but we managed to feel the heat of the deserts - in the evening at 21.10 on the street 35C and incredibly stuffy, strange for a coastal city. We were glad to have air conditioning in the airport halls.

Theoretically savvy, we immediately after the formal procedure of passing through the frame and having our hand luggage scanned, approached the Etihad counter.

Since we arrived at Terminal 3, which was built in 2009 specifically for Etihad Airlines, there are no other counters here.

Abu Dhabi International Airport has 3 terminals.

Terminal 1.(all diagrams can be enlarged)

Built in 1982, it serves more than 20 airlines from different countries. Sometimes flights from Russia arrive here and transit passengers need to move to T3 along the beautiful glass passage, which is immediately to the right as you rise to the second floor from the plane. The entire journey will take no more than 10 minutes.

This electric car can take First and Business class passengers, people with disabilities, those who have ordered an escort at the airport to the airport, and passengers with children can also arrange a ride.

Terminal 2.

Commissioned in 2005, it serves 12 airlines on domestic routes. From T1 and T3 there is a free shuttle that takes 5 minutes.

Terminal 3.

Built in 2009 specifically for Emirates Airline, it is their base aircraft. The T3 building contains lounges, lounges for first and business class passengers, sports and fitness centers, restaurants and cafes, a medical center, prayer rooms and duty-free shops.

Since we arrived at T3 and depart from it, we do not need to move between terminals.

Get to the city.

If you have arrived in the UAE for a few days, then you can get from the airport to the city in several ways.

Taxi

There are several taxi companies in Abu Dhabi. But only two of them are allowed to carry airport passengers. The taxi rank is located sensibly - at the exit from the arrivals hall. To avoid misunderstandings, it is better to agree on the cost of the trip beforehand, although there are standard taxes. Al Ghazal taxi will take you to the city for 75 dirhams and 40 minutes.

Metered taxi will take you to the city center (35 km) for 60-70 dirhams. The taxi rank is located at the end of a long walkway directly from the main terminal. Passengers must turn left when exiting the aircraft and walk through a long passage to the taxi rank area. Usually there are always long queues in the evening and until late at night.

Car with driver

Al Ghazal Company also provides a car with driver. This is a much more comfortable option than a taxi, but it also costs more - about 110 dirhams.

Bus

24-hour municipal buses are white and green, equipped with air conditioning. Bus number 901 also runs into the city every 30-45 minutes, 24 hours a day, and costs only 3 dirhams. To get to the stop you need to: go down to the ground floor. Just 10 meters on the right there is a sign that says "Bus station". Etihad bus and public bus use the same bus stops.

If you fly with Etihad, regardless of flight class, you will receive complimentary Etihad transfers to and from Abu Dhabi city centre. It branches off from the main car park at the front of the airport where the car rental office is located.

Car rental

All major rental companies have offices at Abu Dhabi Airport.

On a transit flight through Abu Dhabi everything is also comfortable. With a short connection, half an hour is enough to get to the gate for your next flight with the help of the kind airport staff.

As in Dubai, at Abu Dhabi airport you can arrange for yourself or your loved ones to be accompanied at the airport or meet with a bouquet, for a fee, of course.

The transit visa is valid for 96 hours and costs 68 US dollars. You can order it online or at the UAE visa center, processing takes 4-10 days. Etihad provides its services as a guarantor for its passengers when obtaining a visa. You can also get a visa at the airport, but this is more expensive. However, if you do not plan to go to the city, you do not need a visa.

And we, as transit passengers without a visa, at the Etihad counter showed our itinerary sheet, since the connection was more than 9 hours, we were given vouchers for free dinner and breakfast, as well as packed branded blankets.

The blankets were so useful to us, because... It's quite cool at the airport due to the air conditioning. Before bed it was quite comfortable, but sleeping at Abu Dhabi airport without warm clothes and a blanket is impossible.

After a short walk around the airport and duty, we decided to have a bite to eat. For the voucher, we were offered a slice of pizza, something like a Caesar salad, and a drink at the pizzeria.

We've refreshed ourselves, now it's time to think about where to take a nap until the morning.

If we had bought tickets in advance, with such a long transfer, Etihad would have provided us with a hotel for free. But you need to book it exactly 30 days in advance by phone or email and wait for confirmation a couple of days later. The hotel at Abu Dhabi Airport has only 40 rooms, of which only 15 can be booked for money. The rest is managed by the airline and the airport. The price for a simple double room is 77 dollars. It is almost impossible to catch a free room without a reservation.

If you are unlucky with the hotel, then there are other vacation options.

These are, of course, lounges.

T3 has lounges for Etihad Airways Diamond First and Pearl Business class passengers, but Abu Dhabi Airport has two lounges for Coral Economy class passengers: Airport Hotel Lounge & Ghazal Lounge.
Use of the lounges is subject to availability at the time of guest's arrival.

AlReemLounge (AlRim) – cost of 4 hours stay 30 USD/person.

AlDhabi Lounge (Al Dhabi) – cost of 4 hours stay 50 USD/person.

The cost of staying in these lounges includes: use of a business center with Internet access, buffet meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), a bar with hot and cold drinks, comfortable reclining chairs, a duty-free shop, and use of a children's room. There is an additional charge for the use of the fitness center (7 USD).

GhazalLounge (Gazal) and Airport Hotel Lounge - cost of 4 hours of stay per person USD 28. In this lounge, the price includes buffet meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), satellite TV with plasma screens, smoking and non-smoking areas, a bar with refreshments, hot and alcoholic drinks, use of showers.

The lounges have more comfortable chairs than the general waiting rooms, but they are crowded and noisy.

New to this airport is “Sleep in Beans”, interesting shells for sleeping in the transit area. These Go Sleep chairs are located in T3 behind gate 31. So far there are only 4 of them, installed in 2013, by the end of the year it is planned to install another 35 pieces.

This soft chair converts into a full (albeit single) bed. Inside the hourly sleep shell there is internet, a touch screen monitor, and sockets for charging devices. A clean sheet, pillow and blanket are included. The chair is closed from above with roller shutters. Something similar to shell garages)). Compared to hotels and lounges, it’s cheaper and quiet – you’re on your own. However, this is not a room, but a bed for 12.5 dollars per hour. During our stay, 2 of the 4 were regularly occupied. They were constantly rented for 2, 3, 4 hours by people who wanted to sleep in silence.

You can also sleep for free at Abu Dhabi airport. In the waiting rooms near all gates, in addition to sitting chairs, there are also from 8 to 16 reclining chairs. We decided to take a nap at these around 11 p.m. – it wasn’t difficult to find free ones. Around 22-28 gates there were a lot of people and the seats were occupied, but then there was almost no one. Sleeping is certainly not very comfortable, but quite acceptable. Many people simply sleep on the floor, fortunately in all waiting rooms the floor is covered with carpet, here you can stretch out to your full height. Next to us, one Russian father and his 3-year-old daughter slept for a couple of hours on reclining chairs and laid a blanket on the floor to sleep in an embrace.

In the morning we were awakened by the aroma of coffee from a kiosk opposite our hall.

We went to the floor below to clean up the mess. Behind gate 31, stairs lead down to the 0th floor to showers and toilets.

Our neighbor took his daughter to the playground.

Then we went up to the 2nd floor to the food court. Of all the variety, my daughter (she is 13 years old) wanted Burger King. For 2 vouchers we chose a Burger, nuggets, cola, a bottle of water, but apparently we did not exhaust the entire limit of funds and they also gave us French fries.

After breakfast, nice light shopping in duty, the prices are not the most interesting - the UAE is generally an expensive country, but there are original Arabic delicacies.

Internet at Abu Dhabi Airport is available for free in 2 options: at stationary terminals, which are installed in large numbers (more than 50 pieces) in the corridor along gates 25-60 and wi-fi. Finding a network is simple: select the “ADAC Free Wireless” network and on the welcome page click on the “ACCEPT” button - that’s it, you’re connected!

The sockets are hidden in the columns on the side of the windows. By the way, sockets with 3 plugs are not a problem. Our regular plugs fit perfectly without any adapters. Comfortable flight. What to do during the flight

Mrs. Valen "Ok. Good luck friends!

INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO NOT GET LOST AND WHAT IS FREE FOR TRANSIT PASSENGERS

-- - the oldest airport in the United Arab Emirates, built in 1982. Every day it serves about 40 airlines flying to more than 54 countries around the world.

Abu Dhabi Airport received a prestigious award in 2011 "Best airport in the Middle East" as well as an airport with the best Duty Free shopping area, which was built in 1985 and already received an award in Cannes as the best in the world. Since that very year, the duty-free zone has been in constant development, with various programs being carried out to reconstruct and improve it.

Flights from Russia operated by Etihad Airways make a transit stop at Abu Dhabi Airport.

On board Jet Air aircraft you can immediately feel the Arabic service: a luxurious menu (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in Russian, comfortable seats with lateral head support, individual screens with a multimedia system. There are films and programs in Russian. There is a European socket in each chair.

Throughout the flight, passengers receive unlimited quantities of soft drinks, wines (Chile), and canned beer. In general, ALL INCLUSIVE!

TERMINAL 1 Built in 1982, it serves more than 20 airlines from different countries.
