Tour tax in Ras Al Khaimah. Useful information about tourism tax in Dubai, UAE. What is hotel tax in Dubai?
When planning a vacation in the UAE, it is important to remember that there are unusual and often unexpected expenses inherent in this destination. After the usual “All Inclusive” Turkey and Tunisia, it’s strange for tourists to pay for something beyond the paid trip.
Some newbie travel agents completely forget to mention/simply don’t know about these expenses. At least, this is how I interpret the shock, tears and even hysterics of tourists at the reception upon check-in.
Well, how else should you react to the fact that upon check-in you are asked to pay some kind of tax and a deposit in an amount that often reaches half of the money you took with you? In general, we understand what the tax is and when hotel deposits can be waived.
Tourist tax in the UAE
A tourist tax is levied on every foreign guest staying in hotels or apartments in Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. There is no such tax in other Emirates yet. This is a mandatory fee and cannot be waived.
The amount of tax depends on a combination of a number of parameters:
- hotel category (number of “stars”);
- number of nights of stay;
- number of rooms in a room or apartment.
The table shows the current tax amounts per night for one-room number:
Hotel category | Dubai | Ras Al Khaimah | Abu Dhabi |
Hotels 5* and above | 20 AED ($5.5) | 20 AED ($5.5) | 10 AED ($2.7) |
Hotels 4* | 15 AED ($4.1) | 15 AED ($4.1) | 10 AED ($2.7) |
Hotels 3* | 10 AED ($2.7) | 10 AED ($2.7) | 10 AED ($2.7) |
Hotels 2* | 11 AED ($2.7) | 10 AED ($2.7) | 10 AED ($2.7) |
Hotels 1* | 7 AED ($1.9) | 7 AED ($1.9) | 10 AED ($2.7) |
Deluxe Apartment | 20 AED ($5.5) | 15 AED ($4.1) | - |
Superior Apartment | 15 AED ($4.1) | 15 AED ($4.1) | - |
Standard Apartment | 10 AED ($2.7) | 10 AED ($2.7) | - |
Please note that the final tax amount depends not only on the star rating, but also on the number of bedrooms! That is why I indicated prices with an emphasis on a one-room suite!
That is, if you are going to Dubai for a week and booked a 5* hotel room with two rooms, you will pay: 20AED x 2 bedrooms x 7 nights = 280 AED. However, the number of people in the room does not affect the amount of tax.
The tax is paid upon arrival or departure from the hotel/apartment in cash or by credit card, if such a payment method is provided at the hotel.
For refusal to pay, hotel employees have every right to call the tourist police, as well as write off this money from a bank card if the tourist used it to make a deposit for their stay. In general, be careful and factor this expense into your travel budget while still at home.
UAE hotel deposits
The deposit is a kind of “insurance” for the hotel against possible damage that residents may cause during their vacation. Its purpose is compensation for damaged furniture, lost towels, etc., as well as for the convenience of paying guests for hotel services.
With a paid deposit, the guest will not have to constantly carry a wallet to pay for a cup of coffee in a restaurant or a massage in a spa. The cost of the service provided will simply be written down in his name and written off from the deposit upon eviction. Comfortable!
Deposits are usually made in 4* and 5* hotels, however, 3* hotels may also require it. The deposit amount depends on the hotel category and is calculated in two ways:
- amount per room per day;
- amount for the entire period of stay.
For example, a deposit in a 5* hotel in Dubai Al Qasr – Madinat Jumeirah 5* will cost $140 US per night, and in a Tamani Hotel 4* apartment – $410 US per week. In fact, these numbers are always approximate. Often the reception will tell you the amounts are lower, but you need to be prepared to pay the “official cost”.
If you pay the deposit in cash in dollars, it will be returned on the day of eviction in Dirhams at the hotel exchange rate on the day of eviction! This is inconvenient - there is nowhere to spend them before departure. At the airport you can exchange them back into USD.
You can also make a deposit by credit card. In such cases, I always recommend having a credit card with you. MAESTRO, VISA, MASTERCARD are accepted. The required amount will be blocked until eviction. If the deposit is not spent on hotel services, the entire amount will be returned within a month after check-out.

Is it possible not to pay the deposit?
Unlike the tourist tax, you can try to refuse to pay the deposit. Some hotels even give the guest a choice: to pay or not.
If a tourist does not want to pay a deposit, then it is completely transferred to cash at the time the service is provided, and upon departure. At the same time, the minibar is sealed, external telephone communications and pay television channels are blocked.
In inexpensive hotels in Sharjah, you can give a foreign passport as a deposit instead of money. I can’t answer how safe it is. There were no precedents, but still.
Before traveling to the Emirates, set aside the money needed for taxes and deposits in advance. Tax is required to be paid. There is no point in expecting that the deposit amount will be reduced or even removed altogether. It’s better to prepare in advance than to worry too much later.
TOP 28 best hotels in Dubai from budget to VIP: tips for choosing Aquarium in Dubai Mall: ticket prices and how to save
In this article we will talk about taxes and fees for tourists in the UAE. Typically, this refers to the amounts that tourists are forced to pay in hotels on top of the stated cost of accommodation, or fees for entry, exit or stay in the country. There are several types of similar fees for tourists in the UAE. Let's look at them all.
Good news
They do not take any money from Russian tourists entering or leaving the UAE. There is not even a visa fee now; Russian tourists are simply stamped at the border, as we wrote about in the article “”.
Bad news
There are taxes on hotel stays. Each emirate has its own set. The main negative is that when declaring prices for accommodation in UAE hotels, these fees are almost never included.
For example. You have calculated your holiday budget in the UAE and concluded that you can pay $60 for a hotel room. You go to booking.com or another search engine and find a suitable hotel for $60. But as a result, you have to pay not 60, but 78 dollars. Agree, this is extremely unpleasant. To be prepared for such moments, read our article to the end.
Additional taxes for tourists in the UAE:
2. A special tax “tourist dirham” does not exist in all emirates, the rate depends on the stars of the hotel;
3. Service surcharge, in reality the federal tax is 10%;
4. Municipal tax, levied in favor of the local budget, differs in different emirates.
If you are going on vacation with a package tour (package tour)
The situation of estimating the cost of a vacation becomes a little simpler. For most tour operators, all taxes and hotel fees are included in the price of the tour. Most, but not all. Therefore, before purchasing a tour, you should ask a travel agent a simple question: what other surcharges are expected at the hotel? Depending on the answer, you will calculate the actual cost of the tour.
If at first glance we compare the cost of a holiday in the UAE with vouchers and on our own, then vouchers seem much more expensive. However, if you take into account all these hotel surcharges, the prices are approximately equal.
